Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a fantastic neo-noir that is carried by outstanding lead performances from Robert Downey, Jr. (RDJ) and Val Kilmer. Written and directed by Shane Black, it is a film that thrives on its witty banter, sleek visuals, and intricate plotting. Ok, that latter bit can sometimes be a bit convoluted, but that doesn't detract from the repartee. Kilmer has never been better than he is here. And RDJ capitalized on his exceptional performance as Harry Lockhart to catapult back into the mainstream. Yes, he's that good in this. Sadly, this movie didn't fare nearly as well at the box office as its spiritual successor, The Nice Guys, nor did it ever get the sequel it so richly deserved. Now, sit back, choke down a Rowdy Peach IPA from Sweetwater Brewing, and avoid peeing on the corpse! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are investigating the untimely and mysterious death of Proto-Cop! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Sex. Murder. Mystery. Welcome to the party! Lingering Questions – Why didn't this revive Kilmer's career the way it did RDJ's? No, Summer is not "almost over!"It always happens around this time of year. Kids start going back to school and all the folks with children think that means Summer is over. They start yapping about it, stores have sales for it. Well, Summer isn't over, and I need you all to shut your mouth with trying to make it over. We got nearly 2 months left and I'm going to enjoy it.As I enjoy my Summer sun, Summer heat, and (of course) Summer beers I'm gonna be smelling good, too. Our buddy Seth come through town from Houston last week and, after showing him some of the Atlanta beer scene, he gave us a mess of Texas beer. I cracked into a Lone Pint Yellow Rose this week, and Brian was sipping some Spindletap 5% Tint and Martin House The Silk Road. Good seeing ya, Seth. Thanks for the beers. In the news this week Brooklyn and Carlsberg collab to do a larger release of a beer brewed with fonio. We've talked about this tough grain on past episodes and it's cool to see what they do with it. Diageo is down overall, but Guinness is killing it. Tilray's craft beer bet is paying off. Would you drink a beer that tasted like a cowboy boot?Hop Valley Brewing in Oregon has introduced a Pale Ale brewed with Elixir hops that are... “a robust and complex hop that offers unique aromas of cognac, leather, and tobacco…” I mean, OK? I'd try it out of curiosity but that does not sound like a flavor I'd be keen on.Brian got to party last weekend with Atlanta United and Sweetwater Brewing. Their new collab, Rowdy Peach IPA, made it's debut and Sweetwater through one heck of a tailgate party to celebrate. Brian said the beer is tasty, and very peachy.More beer stats this week as we talk about the countries producing the most beer. Any guesses who has the top spot? In Find Me Guilty, Vin Diesel stars as "Fat" Jackie DiNorscio, one of several defendants in a federal racketeering trial. That trial was the longest Mafia trial in American history. That conceit is interesting in and of itself, but the fact that DiNorscio served as his own attorney really puts it over the top. Using original court transcripts throughout, DiNorscio makes for a compelling movie character. And Diesel's portrayal of him is some of his finest work on film. DiNorscio is charming and funny. His counterpart, Sean Kierney (in reality, Samuel Alito) played by Linus Roache is the opposite. He's a brash, cocky prick that you really want DiNorscio to stick it to. Yes, the mobsters are the bad guys, but they are not bad guys. The penultimate film of the great Sidney Lumet, it's a shame that Find Me Guilty didn't find a wider audience at the time of its release. Buy, hey, it's free to stream now, so what are you waiting for? So, sit back, overrule any objections you have with a Tropical High Hazy IPA from Sweetwater Brewing, and don't rat! Goin' Coastal by SweetWater Brewing is a Fruited IPA by style. Slip into some sunshine and step off the grid by Goin' Coastal with this pineapple laced IPA. The bright aromas of the five citrus hop additions are accentuated by the tropical fruit of the pineapple. And just like those three day weekends, its finish is quick. Golden copper in color with a full malt bill to bring the balance to our year round offering. This craft beer is 6.1% ABV and 45 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
Gone Trippin by SweetWater Brewing is an American IPA by style. The style that started it all, Gone Trippin' heads straight to the coast, assertively hopped with aromas of citrus and pine with a malty backbone to keep you center. The beer that puts the West Coast wherever you are. This craft beer is 7% ABV and 75 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
TripleTail by SweetWater Brewing is an American IPA by style. Blue Beetle is the type of superhero film that seems to be in increasingly rare supply these days. It places character firmly over spectacle, and in doing so, gives us one of the most heartfelt comic book films of recent memory. If you're not familiar with the character, Blue Beetle is sort of extraterrestrial Ironman. The character, Jaime Reyes, is human, but the tech, Khaji Da, is alien. The two form a symbiosis, one where the suit is able to conjure whatever Jaime can imagine. In that way, it is sort of also reminiscent of the Green Lantern's ring. All that aside, Blue Beetle nails the vibe of someone trying to acclimate to the insane circumstance he finds himself. And it does so without sacrificing the beating heart of its story—Jaime's family. Sadly, despite being one of the strongest entries in DC's film catalogue, Blue Beetle flopped at the box office, earning a franchise low $130.8 million. Neither strong reviews or James Gunn's promise that the character would return in his soon-to-be rebooted DCU were enough to drum up interest. Truly a bummer. Now, sit back, let Khaji Da manifest you a can of Blue from SweetWater Brewing, and fire up El Chapulín! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Chumpzilla are catching up on María la del Barrio! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – He's a superhero, whether he likes it or not! (00:00) Lingering Questions – Is Susan Sarandon confused by the film she's in or just bored by it? Devon Kreps, the owner of 7venth Sun Brewery, has a degree in Fermentation Science from Oregon State University and gained experience at Anheuser-Busch's research pilot facility in St. Louis. She was also the Production Manager at Sweetwater Brewing during its expansion from 25,000 to 60,000 barrels. In 2012, she opened the first 7venth Sun Brewery location in Dunedin, which features 10 taps and outdoor seating. This location, the brewery says, is now treated as a pilot facility, focusing on producing Saisons, Belgian beers, Brett IPAs, Hazy IPAs, and "fun" lagers. The Tampa location, which opened in 2017 in a former VFW roller skating rink, is a larger production plant with a tasting room and outdoor beer garden. 7venth Sun Brewery has created a pair of seltzers called Pink Tax and Blue Tax. They are identical recipes except for the color- and the price. According to the brewery, The Pink Tax refers to the practice of charging higher prices for goods and services marketed to women. Razors, for example, can be up to 66% more expensive for women than for men, despite being the same product. This practice is seen as a form of gender discrimination, as it disproportionately affects women and non-binary individuals. In a switch: The Blue Tax seltzer is priced higher than the Pink Tax seltzer, and 100% of the additional cost, as well as proceeds from both seltzers will be donated to the Pink Boots Society. Kreps explains how all this came about and also talks about Tampa Beer Week and the growing of a business. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. Elkmont Exchange brings craft beer and charcuterie to Knoxville, TN Above Photo: Elkmont Exchange You may be surprised to find out that a brewpub in Tennessee was founded by a team whose first brewing venture was in Saigon (or is that Ho Chi Minh City?) Vietnam. Alex Violette started his boozy career at Upslope Brewing in Boulder, CO where he met Bethany Lovato, a craft beer industry veteran. After falling head over heels for each other they had the opportunity to move to Vietnam and open an American craft brewery, Pasteur Street. Elkmont Exchange's third founder, Ryan Davenport, had grown up in Knoxville with Violette and after honing his culinary skills in Southern restaurants joined the team at Pasteur Street. The brewery thrived and continues to thrive, but the team was ready for their next challenge. They returned to Knoxville and Elkmont Exchange was born. The trio selected Chris Meadows as Head Brewer at their new brewpub. Meadows got his start at Atlanta's SweetWater Brewing where he worked for 8 1/2 years eventually becoming Lead Brewer and helping to launch SweetWater's Woodlands. Like Elkmont's founders, Meadows was ready for a new challenge and packed his bags for Tennessee. Meadows took some time off from brewing a multitude of beers to chat with us this week. We talk about Elkmont's unique brewhouse, some of the crazy beers they've brewed, heavy metal collaborations, their sour beer program, and of course, we had to get the scoop on that charcuterie program. Hop Soul Brewery isn't open yet, but we've been in touch with founder Justin Crandall since the idea was fresh. Crandall and his wife Elizabeth were in the Atlanta area this week and joined us in the studio to share some beers with us and chat about their plans to be Brunswick, GA's first brewery. Craft Beer News In the news this week Brian fills us in on the craft beer industry growth through the first half of 2018, the continued drama surrounding Beavertown Brewing and their festival, 1,600-year-old Swedish beer (that's pre-Viking era), and the brewing habits of Hittites in Turkey 4,000 years ago. Beers of the Week As we're known to do, we sampled several beers this week including Dead Beach Brewing's I Could Teach You But I'd Have to Charge (a Milkshake IPA, duh.), The Southern Brewing Company's Southern Woodpile Raspberry (Raspberry Sour Ale), Southern Prohibition Paradise Lost (DIPA), Bell's Whiskey Barrel-aged Cherry Stout (it is what it is), Southbound Mountain Jam (a delicious Southern Lager), and Three Taverns Crave (IPA).
I didn't expect to talk about a serial killer when I sat down with Devon Kreps recently, but sometimes life can be full of surprises. For a while, that was a recurring theme for Devon and her brewery, 7venth Sun, which she co-owns with Justin Stange. As you'll hear in our discussion, natural disasters and local tragedies played an unexpected and unfortunate role in the early story of their brewery's new production space in Tampa, Florida. But when we got together, it was in the cozy confines of their original brewery and taproom in Dunedin, a sort of golf cart community also on the western side of the state. Devon and Justin opened 7venth Sun in 2012 after meeting at Sweetwater Brewing, and her roots in beer go back to a degree in fermentation science from Oregon State University and time spent with Anheuser-Busch. You'll hear from Devon on a lot of similar topics craft brewers are facing today, from finding a niche in a local market to learning how to best run a business and, perhaps most important, overcome unexpected challenges for which you have no control. Through it all, Devon has helped run one of the flagship breweries in the greater Tampa area providing growth and excitement for her team and customers alike. We talk to them about their beers, getting started in homebrewing and African-Americans in craft beer. Gwinnett County is metro Atlanta's second most populous county. However, until recently, it lacked one thing: Its own craft brewery. Lawrenceville's Slow Pour Brewing Company changed that earlier this year. Located just off the Lawrenceville Square, Slow Pour took a dilapidated building and turned it into a gathering place. One of Slow Pour's founders, John Reynolds and brewer Chase Medlin joins us on the show this week to talk about their journey...and their beers. We also head to SweetWater Brewing to check out a collaboration with Relix Magazine and Kyle Hollingsworth of the String Cheese Incident. Plus, we sample Southbound's newest version of Moonlight Drive....and compare it to a 2015 version Aaron found in the back of his fridge. On a dark and stormy night, we headed out to TopGolf Midtown for the finals of their winter league. As luck would have it, we were joined by Tucker Berta-Sarkisian and Brian "Diggs" Diggelmann from SweetWater Brewing, Gina Silva and Tyler Vigue from TopGolf, and the one and only Ale Sharpton! Spring Beers were on the discussion list, and we talked about the change in season, and the transition from maltier, darker beers to hops and saisons. Truck and Tap's Beers of the Week: Lots of them. Ale shared some beers from his recent trip to Charlotte, including NoDa's Hop Cakes Double IPA. Plus, SweetWater's Wookie Down Imperial Red Ale, its newest Dank Tank Release. And 420, Jekyll's Hop Dang Diggity....and more! Headlines (Sponsored by Your Pie Perimeter) SB85 HAS PASSED! Finally, Georgia becomes the last state to allow direct sales for brewers and distillers in the state. What does that mean? Basically, we will no longer have to deal with the farce of buying a tour and getting free samples. Yes, that means that you can actually go to a brewery and order a pint of their beer. Amazing stuff on 2017. Looks like the rules will go into effect late summer or early fall of this year, so stay tuned. One great announcement on the heels of this - Wild Heaven will open a second location on the Beltline.
