Boulder's Upslope (https://upslopebrewing.com) has been brewing Craft Lager since long before lager brewing was “cool,” and today the small brewery has built a production methodology for the longtime core offering that optimizes both quality and production efficiency. In this episode, head brewer Alex Meyer discusses the way the brewery makes their signature lager with a litany of unconventional ingredients and processes, and shares how they employ similar iconoclastic approaches with their Japanese-style rice lager, and 4-year-barrel-aged Grand Reserve. Along the way, Meyer discusses: brewing lager with standard two row malt and white wheat lager fermentation under pressure managing sulfur production in pressure fermentation cropping and repitching yeast using exogenous enzymes to facilitate rice lager fermentation with 55% flaked rice American lager hop varieties like Sterling and Contessa feeding healthy high gravity fermentations managing long-term oxidation in extended barrel aging And more. ( Lander, WY) - Another beer-cast podcasts from Lander Brewfest, in this episode we talk to Colorado's Upslope Brewing Company. They have a great name, following and considered accomplished with their craft. Ryan Cobb joined the party last year with Jerrad and myself, and we are thankful to have him back. This year he gives us the insight into the new "spiked snowmelt" with Upslope that has real snowmelt! "Spiked Snowmelt" sounds so Rockies, something we would want here in Wyoming. "Hard Sipper" is their new libation with a 12% ABV. Let's find out more from Ryan Cobb. Keep up with Upslope
In a Western ponderosa pine savanna, tall pines dot an open, grassy landscape. A Western Bluebird flits from a gnarly branch, as this Cassin's Finch belts out a rapid song. The trees here grow singly or in small stands. Upslope, the pines become denser, mixing with firs. Downhill, the trees give way to an open grassland. The open structure of this savanna, found on mountain slopes from the Rockies to the Cascades, results from recurring natural fires. Fast-moving blazes sweep through, burning the low vegetation but sparing the larger trees, which are protected by very thick bark. After a fire, grass and wildflowers re-grow quickly. Mohammad Reza Alizadeh, John T. Abatzoglou, and Mojtaba Sadegh report that forest fires have been advancing upslope across the western United States in recent decades.
A recession and a hops shortage didn’t dissuade a trio of beer-loving visionaries from opening a brewery in the heart of craft beer country. Upslope Brewing sold its first beers in 2008 in Boulder, Colo. It’s now Colorado’s fourth-largest independent craft brewery in a state that boasts more than 400. Upslope distributes to a handful of states where it strives to be the après everything beer. One of those states is Utah. In fact, in 2016, Upslope developed a beer brewed specifically for Utah — a Belgian Style Blonde Ale brewed with guava that catered to the state’s then-4% ABV limitations for beer sold in grocery and convenience stores. Since then — the brewery that seems to zig when others zag — has staked its claim to being a business for good that makes even better beer. Marketing Director Katie Hill and Regional Market Manager Antal Maurer visited with Utah Beer News to talk about what sets Upslope apart. Plus, we were joined by Katie Flanagan, a veteran of Utah’s hospitality industry, who recently finished her first year as Upslope’s Utah market manager. During our conversation we discussed: Why Upslope is so invested in and excited about the Utah market What craft beer drinkers — and hard seltzer drinkers — can expect from the Boulder-based brewery in the Beehive State How Upslope became a Certified B Corporation — and what that entails in terms of corporate social and environmental responsibility And we get to hear some fun stories involving the 13-year-old Upslope brand — including why it took so long to brew a Hazy IPA Thank you to Katie, Katie, and Antal for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy hearing more about Upslope Brewing. If you enjoy this type of storytelling, I’d really appreciate if you could please leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. And now, let’s jump in to learn more about Upslope Brewing. For an accompanying article, please visit UtahBeerNews.com. Enjoy the episode! Episode 51 | April 19, 2021

Kate Beardsley is a venture capitalist, angel investor, and business strategist. She is Managing Partner at Upslope Ventures (Galvanize Ventures), she also serves on the Board Vice-Chair of Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association and is a board member at the Rockies Venture Club. Kate is also an active member of the Colorado Technology Community, and prior to joining Upslope, she started funds for Lerer Hippeau and did business strategy for Martha Stewart. Kate serves as a mentor for both TechStars and Galvanize; she has appeared on CNBC and Fox News, and she has been featured on CNN and in the Denver Business Journal. In this episode… One big mistake founders often make is not investing time and energy in researching about their investors before making an ask. They don’t take the time to find out what their potential investors want and need and as a result, they often make asks that get turned down by investors because it leaves them feeling lackluster about the opportunity. But Kate Beardsley says that doesn’t have to be the end of the founder-investor relationship. Kate says that building genuine relationships post-ask is a crucial part of maintaining ties and connections in the business industry. Not only that, it’s an opportunity for continued growth, learning, and can be a great resource for references that can help with future asks. In this episode of What’s Your Ask, Stephanie Sims talks to Kate Beardsley, Managing Partner at Upslope Ventures, about the importance of relationship building even when you get turned down after a pitch. She also explains the importance of references when filtering out advice and the best ways to get these, the different approaches in getting funding from VCs, and find out why it’s imperative for her to set her priorities before replying to an ask. Stay tuned.
Episode 22 is live! This week we've got George Livadas on the show. George is the founder and portfolio manager of Upslope Capital. Here it is, our Intro Episode 000(?) of Crafted Conversations. Hooray! We’re delivering you our weekly adventures and conversations as we peruse our local craft scene and divulge in some imported items and experiences from around the world. As we trade stories and dig up the origins and tidbits of curious information about what we’re enjoying we will share with you the amazing passions of ours and those who we converse with. Our first podcast of course is just a random rambling of thoughts and a general directive as to how the show will go. Initially we want you to get a feel for who we are and how we think, or don’t in some cases. We’ll keep a bit of a structure/guideline to our podcasts but we’ll freeform most of our conversations when it really comes down to it. In our first podcast, we discuss what the game plan is, we munch on a few tidbits, some beer and whiskey and we find out that Hunter S. Thompson and George Stranahan, from Stranahan’s Whiskey, were neighbors. We drink some Upslope and River North Beer, especially the delicious 2014 Barrel Reserve, and ramble on about a few of our favorite places to visit around town. A couple of beer and whiskey driven anecdotes later and you’ve got a fun little Intro Podcast. Enjoy the show and expect the other one shortly.
