Also in this episode is an announcement that the podcast is taking an extended hiatus over the summer and new episodes will resume sometime, probably September-ish... In this episode of the Music at a Rational Volume Podcast, Nate and Kyle (mostly Kyle) take you on a brief reminiscence into the life and career of one Neill Kirby McMillan Jr. (August 2, 1957 – February 7, 2024), who was professionally known as Mojo Nixon. Perhaps best described as the "dirty" Weird Al, Nixon's work was sarcastic and cutting but also witty and clever, all while never being shy to take on topics and people most people wouldn't touch. Full of cuss words, sexual innuendo, adult themes, and plenty of other not safe for work content, Nixon's work will stand out for years to come. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle take a stab at seeing if they can put together a decent playlist of songs that are all over 6 minutes, and good. Largely the list came out great with lots of compelling, complex, and enjoyable songs from artists you may or may not associate with lengthy singles. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle try to decide if one of those records people always talk about is as good as they say, or is it worth the hype? The hosts apply their unique album reviewing perspectives to the well-regarded yet annoyingly common rock alter presence, 2112 by Canadian rockers RUSH. Listen along as the hosts go through the album and share their thoughts about what's good, and what's not.No playlist this week, but check out 2112 from RushMusicatarationalvolume.com@MARVpodcast on Twittermusicatatrationvolume profile on Spotify for episode playlists based on topics discussed
In this episode Nate and Kyle talk about the live music experience. What makes a good one, what makes a bad one, and why can't bands just put out a decent tour t-shirt anymore??? Hear about the host's best concert going experiences and some of the less good stuff too. Also stick around to hear some of the reasons why the hosts chose these songs to make the playlist. In this episode Nate and Kyle discuss the new album by The Alarm, called Forwards. In a decidedly more hopeful and positive record than the subject of last week's episode, Jason Isbell's new one, the hosts find a breath of fresh air and upbeat rock tunes. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume Nate and Kyle discuss the (relatively) new album by Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, called Weathervanes. In this episode Nate and Kyle, well... mostly Kyle discusses all things alt country. These are the songs that Kyle feels best represent the alt country vibe. The songs and artists on this playlist are ones that don't fit into your precious genre boxes or your succinct synopses and certainly don't want your country radio airplay, or your increased exposure... or your fandom... or your... money... um... where was I? Listen as at least one of the hosts heaps mounds of love on these beloved songs and is grateful that they chose to follow their muse instead of suckling at the teats of big music and selling out. This week's playlist: Alt-Country Primer Blue – The JayhawksPropinquity (I've Just Begun to Care) – Mike Nesmith Cry Love – John HiattEnough – Todd Snider & the Nervous WrecksGimme Back My Dog – SlobberboneNew Madrid – Uncle TupeloTear-Stained Eye – Son VoltPick Up the Change – WilcoAngels – BodeansKerosene – The Bottle RocketsSix Blocks Away – Lucinda Williams Diamonds – VolebeatsWalk it Off – BellwetherStupid Boy – The Gear DaddiesTime & Time Again – Martin Zellar & the HardwaysSalome – Old 97'sIn My Dreams – The HangdogsNo One's Gonna Love You – Band of HorsesIf Looks Could Kill – Rodney CrowellStraight to Hell – Drivin' n' Cryin'Michael Keaton – Ruston KellyIt Ain't Easy Being Me – Chris KnightMIddle of America – Will HogeShe Left Me For Jesus – Hayes CarllHe's a Dick – Golden SmogLove Caught Up to Me – Dwight YoakamGoin' Back to Harlan – Emmylou HarrisI and Love and You – The Avett BrothersDon't Wanna Know Why – WhiskeytownTwo – Ryan AdamsEvery Saturday Night – VandoliersTraveling Alone – Jason Isbell & the 400 UnitLet's Kill Saturday Night (Robbie Fulks cover) – 5 Chinese BrothersAnother Song Nobody Will Hear – Will Hoge w/Wade BowenRevival - Jamestown RevivalMusicatarationalvolume.com@MARVpodcast on Twittermusicatatrationvolume profile on Spotify for episode playlists based on topics discussed

In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle do another new album review. The new record from Dave Hause called Drive It Like It's Stolen is the latest effort from the Philadelphia native. You might be surprised to hear that the hosts don't necessarily agree on this one, but listen as they go back and forth about this noticeably short 10 song album. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume Nate and Kyle discuss the new album by country artist Kip Moore, called Damn Love. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle dive into murky genre waters with a playlist years in the making. There have been female vocal leads and there has been electronic pop music, and there has also been dance elements, but the recent crop of artists putting these things together have carved out some space of their own. In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle present a playlist they have curated with songs of gratitude, the occasional one about Thanksgiving, and also some turkey. In preparation for the annual holiday reminding you to, as your mother says, "stop your whining and be okay with what you have for crying out loud", listen as the hosts share some of their thoughts and favorite choices. You will then be prepared to listen to the following songs or the link to the playlist. It might be nice to hear that people much more narcissistic than you were able to be grateful, at least for as long as it took to produce the song... hopefully that means that you can too. This episode of Music at a Rational Volume is another album review, this time it is Rhett Miller's (Old 97s) 8th solo record titled The Misfit. There is a bit of a spoiler alert in that Nate and Kyle don't agree on whether this is a good album or not, so listen to the record and see what side you land on, then tune in to the podcast to see who agrees with you... who is right... or, who is more wrong. No playlist this week, instead listen to The Misfit by Rhett MillerMusicatarationalvolume.com@MARVpodcast on Twittermusicatatrationvolume profile on Spotify for episode playlists based on topics discussed
