Before inspiring the horrors of *American Horror Story: Hotel*, H.H. Holmes' Murder Castle in Chicago was a real-life house of nightmares—filled with trap doors, gas chambers, and victims who checked in but never checked out.IN THIS EPISODE: It's one of the most infamous and macabre subjects of Chicago history – it even served as inspiration for TV's “American Horror Story: Hotel”. It's what has become known as “The Murder Castle” where serial killer H.H. Holmes committed his monstrous crimes. But even today, Holmes continues to terrify… in spectral form. (H.H. Holmes' Hellish Hotel And Lingering Haunting) *** A woman tries to save the soul of her daughter, believing her to be possessed… but her solution to drive out the demon was to murder her daughter using a holy crucifix. (Murder By Crucifix) *** What's worse than proclaiming yourself to be a supernatural being and starting your own cult? How about telling your followers you are God so you could do drugs and have sex with teenage girls? It's the disturbing true story of the cult called “The Group”. (Theodore Rinaldo – The Drug Cult Rapist) *** Shrunken heads – believe it or not, they are real. And some tribal peoples create them even today – from real human heads. But why do it at all? We'll look at the reality behind shrunken heads, the reason they are created… and even how they are created. (The History and How of Shrunken Heads) *** A terrifying series of paranormal activities invade a family's home in Wales. (The Swansea Entity) *** Tenome is a Japanese Urban Legend about a blind man who was robbed and murdered. His dying wish? To have eyes on his hands so he could see. (The Seeing Hands of Tenome) *** Unsolved mysteries are intriguing simply because they are unsolved. That's why we are so fascinated by stories of people disappearing without a trace. But one man's disappearance is so bizarre, so weird, that upon hearing the story you'll be scratching your head wondering what the heck you just heard. Joe Russo and Mark Gantt are the team behind Soul Mates, a horror romance that explores the complexities of modern relationships through a matchmaking service that spirals into darkness. Joe was the producer with Mark directing. Joe Russo is a three-time BloodList writer, producer and director known for The Au Pair Nightmare, which he directed, Hard Kill, which he was a writer on, and as a producer on Nightmare Cinema, The World's Greatest Beer Run and the upcoming horror thriller, The Inheritance.Mark Gantt is an actor, director, producer, and writer recognized for acting work on The Bannen Way, Criminal Minds, American Horror Story: Hotel, and Dexter. Mark has also directed multiple features including A Deadly Price For Her Pretty Face and Secret Life of a Celebrity Surrogate. In our conversation, Joe and Mark delve into the inspiration behind the film, the creative process, and the challenges faced during production. They also discuss the film's commentary on modern dating, the importance of not being an asshole in the industry, and the serendipitous real-life romance that developed on set. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Joe and Mark.Write about real fears and anxieties. Joe and his writing partner Chris channeled their fears of online dating into the script for Soulmates. If you're afraid of something or have a societal observation, chances are lots of other people feel the same way. Eli Roth always uses his own fear as the foundation for his movies, which makes them viscerally relatable and therefore effective horror. They also balanced the movie by incorporating the absurdity of reality dating shows to create a unique horror/humor experience.Movie karma is very real. A key person on this movie was the talent agent that Joe and Mark worked with who was Joe's old intern. This agent championed the movie within the agency and landed them a killer cast. The agent's positive working relationship with Joe greatly helped this. Joe emphasized the importance of treating everyone well in the industry, as today's assistant could be tomorrow's studio executive. No matter who you're interacting with, maintain professional and respectful relationships. Be nice, and be kind. Not just because they could gain more stature later on, but because it's the right thing to do.Your determination must be dogged. "Soulmates" took 14 years from conception to completion, going through multiple rewrites and producers. In the end, the movie got greenlit but the trouble didn't stop there as the team faced major setbacks, such as an actor's emergency surgery, but through it all the production persisted through strong problem-solving, support from producers, and good old grit. Stories like this are typically the rule, not the exception, in filmmaking. Guillermo Del Toro said the natural state of a movie is for it to not get made, so you as a filmmaker must be a force both in terms of determination and resilience.Follow Joe Russo at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joerussogramX (Twitter): https://x.com/joerussotweetsWebsite: https://joerussofilm.com/IMBd: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2349665/Follow Mark Gantt at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markgantt/X (Twitter):

His ascent from an impassioned self-learner in dance to an acclaimed choreographer exemplifies dedication and artistic innovation. From the streets of Victoria, British Columbia, Becker's affinity for movement was ignited by the rhythmic pulses of breakdancing and hip-hop during his early teens. By the age of 19, he had already made his choreographic debut, a transition fueled by his experience on the set of "Chicago," a film that won accolades for its choreography. Becker's choreographic imprint spans over 300 projects, including high-profile films like "Deadpool 2," "Disney's Descendants," and the "Twilight" series. His television credits are equally impressive, featuring popular series such as "The Last of Us," "Riverdale," and "American Horror Story: Hotel." His directorial flair was also showcased at the Pan American Games' closing ceremonies in 2015. However, Becker's path was fraught with hardship. He recounts the loss of his home during the financial crisis, a period during which he worked at FAO Schwartz Toy Store. It was this twist of fate that connected him with Kenny Ortega, sparking collaborations that propelled him to new heights. Paul Becker's narrative is more than a chronicle of professional success; it's a source of inspiration, showcasing the fruits of passion, ingenuity, and an unwavering spirit. His ongoing work in the realm of dance and choreography continues to motivate those who dream of a life in the creative arts. Interview by Kris PetersPost punk/goth outfit She Wants Revenge hit pay dirt with their first ever single Tear You Apart back in 2005, a song that somehow made it to the ears of Lady Gaga, who in turn insisted producers of a TV show she was working on called American Horror Story: Hotel included the track in its soundtrack. This early leg up introduced She Wants Revenge to an instant global market and served them well over their debut self-titled album and follow ups This Is Forever and Valleyheart before disbanding in 2012.2022 saw the band reunite and start producing music again, with their ensuing success setting She Wants Revenge down a touring path that sees the band finally travel to Australia for the first time this October.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Justin Warfield to delve deeper."Dude, it's like... it is a running joke amongst the band, and I'm sure any Aussie fans by now, that if we were to have announced these shows no-one would believe it anyway," he laughed. "Every time we do it gets cancelled. So, Thomas Froggatt - who is the bass player in She Wants Revenge and started in the original line-up as guitar player - he is from Byron Bay and Melbourne and he grew up between the two, so when I told him the dates we were coming he said 'yeah, yeah right, I'll believe it when I see it (laughs). And, so, it's really exciting. It sucks to dealing stereotypes but I just have to be honest. Whenever I can go to a place where the culture has inspired me or us as a band and as individuals, it's exciting. It's a place where there's so much great history and so much great music and so much culture and for me as a lifelong surfer to get to the Gold Coast is unbelievable. I grew up watching... I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to surfing and some of my absolute heroes of the sport are from there and I've been looking at photos and videos forever. So the idea that not only do I get to go and play shows for audiences that probably thought we would never come - plus we're a band that has broken up twice before - so for the people that have been with us the whole time and grown old with us and are like 'oh wow, they're really coming', or for the new people who have discovered us from a soundcheck or Pandora or Spotify or a playlist... the fact that they get to experience us and what we do live and we get to share three nights of music with our fans old and new... we get to see the culture and the cities that are so exciting to us and the fact that I just get to surf... It's going to be outrageous."In the full interview, Justin talks more about what to expect from the tour, preparing for a run of shows so far from home, what they are expecting from us, their breakthrough single and being noticed by Lady Gaga, what that meant for the band's career, the chances of a new album and more.
Paul Becker is one of the most sought-after young choreographers and directors in the industry. Paul is a three-time World Choreography Award Nominee, a 2022 Leo Award Winner, and a 2022 MTV Award winner for "Best Musical Number", where he was nominated for two different films in the same category. He is the protégé and creative partner of famed director Kenny Ortega. Paul's visionary approach to storytelling, which he honed for years through his prolific choreography career, resulted in him recently directing the hit Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms. He also wrote and directed Breaking Brooklyn for Lionsgate starring Academy Award Winner Louis Gossett Jr. and was honored to direct and choreograph the closing ceremonies for the illustrious Pan Am Games. While his career as a dancer thrived, he was inspired to choreograph during his time filming Chicago alongside Rob Marshall. Having choreographed his first film at the age of 19, he was quickly catapulted to acclaim and was brought onboard to develop epic stage productions for The Jonas Brother, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Pitbull, Don Omar, Ciara, and many others. His onstage work also includes creating and directing two mega tours of Sesame Street Live and two brand-new circus tours for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. His body of choreographic work includes over 300 films and T.V. shows, an impressive feat for such a young artist. Some notable projects bearing his innovative stamp include: the 2019 Academy Award nominated film Ralph Breaks the Internet (Disney Animation), the Seth Rogan produced comedy Good Boys, Deadpool 2 (w/ Ryan Reynolds), Noelle (w/ Anna Kendrick & Shirley MacLaine), The Kissing Booth 1, 2 & 3 (Netflix), and the hit YA musical comedy A Week Away for Netflix. Paul's T.V. work extends to Charmed, Hellcats, Legends of Tomorrow, and Riverdale for The CW, the National Geographic series Valley Of the Boom, American Horror Story: Hotel, Once Upon a Time for ABC, A Series of Unfortunate Events for Netflix, and The Magicians for SYFY. The Walt Disney organization has enfolded and integrated him into their creative workings, a blessing Paul cherishes daily. He has given life to several projects at Mouse Central that would bring any performance artist and collaborator boundless joy. His association with Disney began when he choreographed The Muppets': Wizard of Oz, followed by The Muppets' Christmas: Letters to Santa. His long-term relationship with them solidified as he was brought in to choreograph several films, from the hit remake of Adventures in Babysitting (w/ Sabrina Carpenter) to Girl vs. Monster (w/ Olivia Holt), and the record-breaking musical franchise Descendants, in which he and Ortega teamed up to choreograph and which was deemed a “YouTube breaking moment” recording billions of views. Additionally, his choreography can be seen in the films Overboard for MGM, the famed Twilight film series, Mirror Mirror (w/ Julia Roberts), Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, and the worldwide phenom book series turned film series Diary of a Wimpy Kid Parts 1-3.
With the recent success of Ryan Murphy's The Watcher and Dahmer (which we discussed last week), we've decided to revisit Barry and Phillip's October 8, 2021 discussion of American Horror Story: Hotel starring Lady GaGa with special guest Michael Bill Special Note: We are no longer sponsored by Anchor. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (/ˈstɛfəni ˌdʒɜːrməˈnɒtə/ STEF-ən-ee JUR-mə-NOT-ə; born March 28, 1986), known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is known for her image reinventions and musical versatility. Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing at open mic nights and acting in school plays. She studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21, through New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, before dropping out to pursue a career in music. After Def Jam Recordings canceled her contract, she worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where she signed a joint deal with Interscope Records and Akon's label, KonLive Distribution, in 2007. Gaga rose to prominence the following year with her debut studio album, The Fame, and its chart-topping singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". The album was later reissued to include the EP The Fame Monster (2009), which yielded the successful singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and "Alejandro".Gaga's five succeeding studio albums all debuted atop the US Billboard 200. Her second full-length album, Born This Way (2011), explored electronic rock and techno-pop and sold more than one million copies in its first week. The title track became the fastest-selling song on the iTunes Store, with over one million downloads in less than a week. Following her EDM-influenced third album, Artpop (2013), and its lead single "Applause", Gaga released the jazz album Cheek to Cheek (2014) with Tony Bennett, and the soft rock album Joanne (2016). She also ventured into acting, playing leading roles in the miniseries American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–2016), for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and the critically acclaimed musical drama film A Star Is Born (2018). Her contributions to the latter's soundtrack, which spawned the chart-topping single "Shallow", made her the first woman to win an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Grammy Award in one year. Gaga returned to her dance-pop roots with her sixth studio album, Chromatica (2020), which yielded the number-one single "Rain on Me". She followed this with her second collaborative album with Bennett, Love for Sale, and a starring role in the biographical crime film House of Gucci, both in 2021.Having sold 124 million records as of 2014, Gaga is one of the world's best-selling music artists and the only female artist to achieve four singles that sold at least 10 million copies globally. Her accolades include 13 Grammy Awards, 18 MTV Video Music Awards, 16 Guinness World Records, awards from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and recognition as Billboard's Artist of the Year (2010) and Woman of the Year (2015). She has also been included in several Forbes' power rankings and ranked fourth on VH1's Greatest Women in Music (2012). Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010 and 2019 and placed her on their All-Time 100 Fashion Icons list. Her philanthropy and activism focus on mental health awareness and LGBT rights; in 2012, she founded the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit organization aiming to empower youth, improve mental health, and prevent bullying. Gaga's business ventures include Haus Labs, a vegan cosmetics brand that launched in 2019.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Anton Starkman of Warner Brothers' "Storks." At a young age Anton Starkman is proving his versatility as a storyteller as he switches it up for his latest projects. Coming off of his role on the acclaimed FX series “American Horror Story: Hotel,” Anton will now lend his voice to the character ‘Nate Gardner' in the Warner Brothers animated film “Storks,” releasing in theaters nationwide on September 23. “Storks” tells the story of the stork species who have moved on from delivering babies to delivering packages. When an order for a baby appears, the best delivery stork must scramble to fix the error by delivering the baby. Anton plays the role of a little boy whose parents (played by Jennifer Aniston & Ty Burrell) work all of the time, and he desperately wants a baby brother to love and play with so he “orders” one from the storks! Anton also has a second film, “Shovel Buddies” from Awesomeness Films that will release on October 11 opposite Bella Thorne & Kian Lawley. Anton has had a very busy 2016 and was recently seen starring opposite Lady Gaga and Chloe Sevigny in the FX series “American Horror Story: Hotel.” He played a little boy who becomes a vampire and turns his neighborhood and school upside down as he transforms his friends into vampires. He has also had significant roles in Freeform's “Dead of Summer,” MTV's “Teen Wolf” and Comedy Central's “Drunk History.” Anton started his career when he went with his mom to sign his two older brothers with a theatrical agent in Los Angeles. The agent handed her three forms rather than two, and he has worked nonstop ever since.

That's right, listeners: Joe "Awardsy" Reid is back in the permanent Extra Hot Great rotation, as the gang (of four!) checks into American Horror Story: Hotel. When will the show lose most of us this season? What's with that kid looking like Noah Syndergaard? And are we gaga for Gaga? Then we ordered up some room service with the Face Off report, bitched about Jason Mann in our Project Project Greenlight segment, and went around the dial with Jane The Virgin, The Walking Dead, Casual, and Sleepy Hollow. Joe made a list! Abby Lee Miller got indicted! David took us on an Adventure Time with his Canon submission! But just how happy is Joe's reunion with Game Time? He says he's just honored to be nominated; we're very glad he's back, on an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
In ep 56, we're joined by Steph! We chatter about Walking Dead, American Horror Story: Hotel, The Muppets, iZombie, The Walk, and a whole bunch of other stuff!
