Hello, makkaley, In the second episode of the series, we came up with a list of movies where Vijayakanth played an Angry Young Man and many aspects that cemented Vijayakanth in movies and real life. The four movies that we discussed in this Podcast were Dhoorathu Idi Muzhakkam and Sivappu Malli. In this episode, we had Praveen and Gopal (Our Podcast regular), who shared a lot of insights. Do check it out when you find time. Until the next episode, Ciao :)

On the eve of A Marvellous Party, a star-filled gala to celebrate Noël Coward, Sarah Crompton talks to producer Julian Bird and Coward's biographer Oliver Soden about Coward's importance today. They discuss the range of his talent as a playwright, songwriter, screen writer, diarist and poet and why the image of him as a comfortable man in a dressing gown couldn't be further from the truth. Did you know that he coined the word gay or that there were people storming out of his plays because he was so shocking? It's all part of realising that he is more relevant and necessary than ever. Episode 4: James Van Cuylenburg Ask Dr James Van Cuylenburg if he'd rather be a rock star or clinical psychologist and he simply can't choose between his two loves. James spends his days helping others navigate life, and by night moonlighting on the stage as the great Billy Joel, among other music legends, performing across Victoria. While James primarily works with adults, couples and families in his day job, his fascination with how we are shaped as children remains a big focus, especially tapping into the child self and embracing the joy of childhood and the importance of imagination, play and fun. But he's candid about what he sees as the biggest challenge for humans today, and that's the growing need for self-acceptance and self-compassion, and his wish and goal to teach as many people as possible to give a generous read of themselves as they do for others. The Pilot Episode of The Humble Skeptic podcast was launched in October of 2022, and on that program, Shane told his Dad's story of seeing Billy Joel perform at a piano bar in Los Angeles. If you've had a chance to listen to that episode, you know the story (if not, you should listen to that show first). On this program, Shane discusses some of the new evidence that has recently come to light about the location of The Executive Room, and talks with John Gibson about his memories of the famous piano bar.SHOW NOTESRelated ResourcesThe Pilot Episode, Humble Skeptic Ep. #1 Is My Dad One of the Characters in Billy Joel's Piano Man? Welcome to another episode of A Century Of Stories presented by IDFC FIRST Bank! This week, we look back at the 'Angry Young Man' of Indian cinema. Amitabh Bachchan and his persona redefined the image of the hero during the 1970s and 1980s. His films captured the simmering anger and rebellious spirit of the youth, reflecting the socio-political unrest of the time. With his intense eyes and powerful voice, Bachchan became more than just an actor; he became a symbol of resistance against societal injustices. His characters often portrayed a man fighting against corruption and inequality, resonating deeply with audiences and leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema. In this (much longer than planned) discussion of SRK's latest blockbuster, "Jawan" (2023), we spend half the episode setting up multiple contexts that help us each inform our disparate reactions to the film. Amartya, Aryan, and Dhruv talk about the Bollywood context -- the Angry Young Man films of the 70s, SRK, and the industry today. And our special guest, Adithiyan (@curioseradithiyan on Instagram), provides the bulk of the material to set up the Tamil Film Industry context -- from the 60s to Shankar to Murgadoss to Atlee (whose VIjay collaborations dominate a significant part of our discussion). After setting up all interrelated, industrial, socio-political, and aesthetic contexts, we discuss the merits and demerits of "Jawan" (w/ spoilers). Two film fans get together to reminisce the greatness of one Amitabh Bachchan. It is an incredibly difficult exercise to navigate through a great career like Bachchan's which has lasted the test of time over five decades. That being said the hosts - Saahil and Saqib believe the peak Bachchan years were the late 70's and especially the phase titled The Angry Young Man. During this phase Bachchan had given five great performance where his character was named Vijay and all five of these screenplays were scripted by the talented duo of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. It's an homage into the journey of Salim-Javed's famously penned down iconic characters - Vijay Varma(Deewar), Vijay Khanna(Zanjeer), Vijay Pal Singh(Kala Pathar), and Vijay Kumar(Trishul and Shakti).
Hi Everyone Sandman Here,Jim talk but he cancelled so I'll give him a topic. I found an article from the Toronto Red Star newspaper called "The Whole World Has An Angry Young Man Problem." Well at least they didn't say angry white male problem and are acknowledging that the problem is coming from all sides. Usually you hear about how unsafe the United States is but if you took Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington DC and St. Louis out of the violent crime statistics. I think there was one more city involved there but I can't be sure. Then you'd see that out of 195 or so countries if you exclude those cities then America was a 189th safest compared to the rest of the world. That's almost at the top. Again those aren't the exact numbers because I can't remember which article I read that in but those are ballpark numbers. The media doesn't really cover the black on black crime in those cities creating outrage when young black males go after each other in Chicago? Their coverage is almost non existent. I've mentioned before that it white on white violence gets media headlines because the majority of people that watch the mainstream media are from the Caucasian persuasion and are more likely to spend money on the products advertised during commercials. It's just the news outlets trying to draw more attention from aged viewers that have money. But besides money I think the angry young male problem is being highlighted to white as wonder bread America to take boom sticks away from the population. Even Elon Musk says that assault rifles need to be taken away from people and he's recently converted over to voting for the right. I'm beginning to see things from a different perspective. That it's not just racism and a battle between the sexes that's taking place here. But that it's also a battle between personality types. Alpha males tend to be authoritarians and they want everyone to bow down to their authority and if you don't then they go after you with force. They can't exactly do that if you're well armed and can defend yourself. Alpha males trying to take away the right to bear arms are doing so they can impose totalitarianism and crown themselves kings over all the cucks out there. It's in their nature to dominate and rule over others and so they are fighting sigma males that want to defend themselves from the tyranny of the alphas. This creates a problem because the omegas, betas and the other males use boom sticks not to defend themselves from the Alphas but to lash out because their place in the hierarchy is low and there's no way for them to go. The angry young men are not gaining access to women and yes some of them like the Payton Gendron the guy in Buffalo that went nuts at the local Tops friendly market was a racist. Probably pissed off at multiculturalism and odds are was radicalize by white nationalists. The article says that the cause of the angry young man problem might be racism or incel misogyny. And if that's the case it's going to get a lot worse. There are times when gentleness is not called for. Jesus gave us one when he overturned the moneychanger's tables in the temple courts. Paul gets pretty close when he talks about the circumcision party, suggesting a slip of the knife toward them would be welcome (Galatians 5:12). It's interesting that this verse is in the same chapter as these verses on the fruit of the Spirit! When it comes time to stand firm, to protect the weak and vulnerable, to prevent harm to another we may need to assert ourselves. It may not be gentle in that moment. But those are the exception and must not set the rule. For anger gives the devil a foothold. Held to and nurtured it not only gives ulcers, it allows our more base instincts freer reign.
Kyle Dunnigan is an unbelievable impressionist and you'll be able to hear a bunch of those impressions today. But that's just an added bonus to the fact that he "storm fronted"
I've Loved These Days is the seventh track off Billy's fourth studio album Turnstiles. It's sandwiched in between Angry Young Man and Miami 2017 so who remembers it. So, mostly we focus on the Glen Campbell classic, Rhinestone Cowboy. They came out at the same time and Billy was going to call the song, "These Rhinestone Days". Close call. In Episode 66, Billy Donnelly decides to talk about anger, and, more specifically, the anger of young white men. Provoked by the idea introduced in the Woodstock '99 documentary that young white men have nothing to be angry about, he attempts to unpack where this very legitimate anger comes from, how society only encourages it to get worse, what we need to do to try to address it and how we grow from it. He discusses where toxic masculinity and unrestrained aggression can factor in, but he focuses very much on the lack of empathy that seems to exist for their struggles, mixed with feelings of being misunderstood and unseen/unheard. He has a lot of ideas to pluck from his mind on the subject, as others seem very quick to dismiss and invalidate these very real feelings of an entire group of people at a time when we all claim to champion better mental health for all. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This episode focuses on Driss Chraibi's The Simple Past (Le Passé Simple), a Moroccan novel about a very angry young man in revolt against his father's tyranny and the hypocrisies of his colonial education. Back in 1954, it was compared to an explosion – and it still packs a punch today. Show Notes: The Simple Past was newly re-issued from NYRB Classics in Hugh A. Harter's 1990 translation, with a new introduction from Adam Shatz. Shatz's introduction is available online at the NYR Daily. Excerpts from Chraibi's interview with Federico Arbós can be found at Fragmentos de la entrevista con Federico Arbós, El Mundo/La Esfera, 28/3/92. This episode also references Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo Trilogy and the father figure of Si Sayyed; Waguih Ghali's Beer in the Snooker Club; and Tayib Saleh's Season of Migration to the North.

It's time for yet another British tale about an Angry Young Man and class struggle as Laurence Harvey has trouble deciding between two lovely ladies in 1959's Room at the Top. Brendan and Jason dive deep into this kitchen sink drama and discuss many things including questioning if the main character truly loves either woman, Simone Signoret's dynamo Oscar-winning performance, the very depressing finale and much more. Plus: The guys roll the dice to find out what movie they'll be covering next week. What do you think of these kitchen sink dramas? Are there too many on the list? Not enough? This film in a way led to the reinvention of Amitabh Bachchan as a romantic poet-hero. It was a major departure from his earlier "angry young man" roles such as 'Deewar' and 'Zanjeer'. To know more check out this video.
Nikhil Pahwa is an angry young man. But that doesn’t make him an outlier. Pahwa, 37, channelises that anger to build and scale mainstream movements such as the net neutrality campaign against Facebook’s FreeBasics in India more than two years ago. So what’s the source of all the anger and sense of activism? It’s Pahwa’s deep need for freedom of the internet. “The need for freedom led me to activism, entrepreneurship...I don’t know where it will take me next but freedom is central to everything I do,” he says. “My mission is to build an internet ecosystem which is open, fair and competitive.” Pahwa’s journey as a media entrepreneur has been filled with existential crisis because of the battle he fights. But then, those battles are also the reason why his venture, Medianama, lives today. “I’m what I’m today because of the fact that internet is open and this freedom exists. Medianama has turned 10 today because of that. I want that for everyone.” Before he committed fully to the net neutrality campaign, he knew it could mean a near death experience for Medianama. “I told the Medianama team that we could die because of what I’m going to do, but this is worth fighting for because we wouldn’t exist if internet wasn’t free and open.” There are some great lessons in this podcast with Pahwa. These lessons aren’t just about rightful activism but also offer insights on fighting battles larger than your own, personal existence. The net neutrality campaign, for instance, had its own moments of existential crisis. “Nothing was budging, no one was participating. And Facebook simultaneously began this massive “support Free Basics” campaign, putting hoardings all over the country. And we were losing.” Pahwa is next readying for another challenge in his life: his wedding is coming up soon.
Listen to CHMTCs last instalment of the series "the British Are Coming" about the life and career of the late, great Stanley Baker. Stanley Baker was born in the impoverished community driven coalmining region of Ferndale in Wales. Like his contemporary Richard Burton, he was discovered by a local school teacher, who cast him in school plays and encouraged him to develop a real career in acting. This he did with considerable success, becoming a powerful actor and producer in British and American movies in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It all culminated in the creation of a fine body of work, much of which has become an integral part of British popular culture. A life long labour supporter, Baker fought for roles that showed the inner workings of the new working class young man. Despair, disappointment, anger, intelligence and ambition, in a British movie landscape that still believed that heroes were stiff upper lip pretty boys, who gave orders rather than took them. With films like Hell Drivers, Zulu, The Italian Job and The Accident, Stanley Baker showed a range and ability which took him to the top of the film business. Have a listen to the fascinating life and career of this too often forgotten Welsh actor, who remains in the eyes of many the first of the great Angry Young Men of British film, stage and TV screen. Also hear about the lives and personalities of some of the stars who were around in Stanley's day, making their own mark on the movies of their time.
Michael Moorcock’s first five Elric of Melniboné stories appeared in the British magazine Science Fantasy in 1962 and were collected in hardcover the next year as The Stealer of Souls, followed by a U.S. paperback edition from Lancer Books in 1967. Savage and sardonic, the Elric stories must have seemed like a fantasy off-shoot of Great Britain’s “Angry Young Man” movement of that era. At first glance, Elric of Melniboné appears to be the very antithesis of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Cimmerian: a physically weak sorcerer, addicted to drugs, symbiotically linked to the malignant black sword Stormbringer, and the rightful emperor of a cruel and decadent pre-human civilization. Moorcock and Elric are often characterized as a negation or rejection of Howardian swords & sorcery, but that’s a drastic oversimplification of Moorcock’s relationship to pulp fantasy. Moorcock was precocious fantasy talent, creating fanzines as a schoolboy and becoming editor of the professional magazine Tarzan Adventures by the age 17 in 1957. Moorcock was a notable contributor to AMRA, a fanzine that was a hotbed of discussion about fantasy fiction and counted among its many notable correspondents Poul Anderson, L. Sprague de Camp, Fritz Leiber, and Roger Zelazny. As mentioned here, the term “swords and sorcery” was coined by Fritz Leiber in dialogue with Moorcock, although Moorcock has always preferred the term “epic fantasy”. Moorcock has at times minimized but never totally denied his appreciation for Howard, most likely hoping to let the Elric saga stand on its own two feet. He’s also held up his deep regard for the works of Leigh Brackett, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Fritz Leiber, and Fletcher Pratt among others and was later a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorceror's Guild of America, none of which indicates someone contemptuous or indifferent to fantasy fiction. Moorcock continued to write Elric stories in the late 1960s and the 1970s that were set prior to the events of Stormbringer. DAW Books republished the Elric Saga in 1977, arranging the stories by internal chronology, splitting the stories from The Stealer of Souls between The Weird of the White Wolf and The Bane of the Black Sword, the third and fifth books of Elric’s saga respectively. With Moorcock’s approval, Del Rey/Ballantine began publishing the “definitive” version of Elric’s saga in 2008, once again collecting the stories in publication order. Elric’s saga clearly had an impact on Gary Gygax as he specifically mentions Elric as a playable figure in the “Fantasy Supplement” to Chainmail (1971). The Law vs. Chaos alignment system in Chainmail and original Dungeons & Dragons (1974) may have originated with Poul Anderson’s Three Hearts and Three Lions, but there’s a distinct Moorcockian flavor in practice, although that would obviously vary from gaming group to gaming group. Rob Kuntz and James Ward wrote up Elric and the Melnibonéan mythos in the fourth Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Gods, Demi-Gods, & Heroes (1976). Four years later, Kuntz and Ward would detail the Melnibonéan mythos for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in Deities & Demigods (1980). Although TSR had permission from Moorcock to use Elric for D&D, their West Coast rivals Chaosium secured the official Elric license in 1981, leading TSR to remove the Melnibonéan section (and Cthulhu Mythos section) from the third printing onwards of Deities & Demigods. As a result, the first two printings of Deities & Demigods are now highly sought after collector’s items. In the meantime, Elric’s gaming presence has remained tightly bound up in the RuneQuest/Basic Role-Playing system for over 25 years, with the exception of Chaosium’s D20 System adaptation Dragon Lords of Melniboné (2001). There is currently no gaming license for any of Michael Moorcock’s works, so it remains to be seen if Elric will ever make an official reappearance at the gaming table….
The Explosion of Deferred Dreams: Musical Renaissance and Social Revolution in San Francisco, 1965–1975 (PM Press) As the fiftieth anniversary of the Summer of Love floods the media with debates and celebrations of music, political movements, “flower power,” “acid rock,” and “hippies”; The Explosion of Deferred Dreams offers a critical re-examination of the interwoven political and musical happenings in San Francisco in the Sixties. Author, musician, and native San Franciscan Mat Callahan explores the dynamic links between the Black Panthers and Sly and the Family Stone, the United Farm Workers and Santana, the Indian Occupation of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and the New Left and the counterculture. Callahan’s meticulous, impassioned arguments both expose and reframe the political and social context for the San Francisco Sound and the vibrant subcultural uprisings with which it is associated. Using dozens of original interviews, primary sources, and personal experiences, the author shows how the intense interplay of artistic and political movements put San Francisco, briefly, in the forefront of a worldwide revolutionary upsurge. A must-read for any musician, historian, or person who “was there” (or longed to have been), The Explosion of Deferred Dreams is substantive and provocative, inviting us to reinvigorate our historical sense-making of an era that assumes a mythic role in the contemporary American zeitgeist. Praise for The Explosion of Deferred Dreams: “Mat Callahan was a red diaper baby lucky to be attending a San Francisco high school during the ‘Summer of Love.’ He takes a studied approach, but with the eye of a revolutionary, describing the sociopolitical landscape that led to the explosion of popular music (rock, jazz, folk, R&B) coupled with the birth of several diverse radical movements during the golden 1965–1975 age of the Bay Area. Callahan comes at it from every angle imaginable (black power, anti–Vietnam War, the media, the New Left, feminism, sexual revolution—with the voice of authority backed up by interviews with those who lived it.” —Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975 “All too often, people talk about the ’60s without mentioning our music and the fun we had trying to smash the state and create a culture based upon love. Mat Callahan’s book is a necessary corrective.” —George Katsiaficas, author of The Imagination of the New Left: A Global Analysis of 1968 “Something very special took place in San Francisco in the Sixties, generating waves of social and aesthetic motion that still ricochet around this planet. The Explosion of Deferred Dreams takes a clear-eyed, politically engaged view that separates truth from propaganda. Grasping why the time became legendary and how society dealt with the challenges it created is what Explosion is about—and it accomplishes this critical task with intelligence and clarity.” —Dennis McNally, author of A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead “In this landmark work, Mat Callahan painstakingly braids disparate threads of the rich tapestry of San Francisco—music, politics, race, culture. In this vast, panoramic portrait, Callahan digs out social/political undercurrents that have never been more thoroughly explored.” —Joel Selvin, Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Rock & Roll, Free Love and High Times in the Wild West Mat Callahan is a musician and author originally from San Francisco, where he founded Komotion International. He is the author of three books, Sex, Death & the Angry Young Man, Testimony, and The Trouble with Music as well as the editor of Songs of Freedom: The James Connolly Songbook. While American audiences would later thrill to the likes of Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin, Steve McQueen and James Coburn, one of the earliest "tough guy" actors of their vintage actually hailed from the UK. Noted as much for his personal volatility and drunken escapades as his intense, "angry young man" portrayals of out of control teddy boys and suchlike, Oliver Reed would display a surprising versatility, covering musicals, literary classics and Shakespearean roles with the same panache as he would Hammer films, cult sci-fi affairs and wildly homoerotic Ken Russell libidofests. Rivalled only by the mad German-Pole Klaus Kinski for his sheer insanity both on set and off, join us as we talk one of the most controversial (and beloved) figures in British cinema history, the late great Oliver Reed! Over two years ago, we discussed the futility and the dangers associated with believing in the possibility government solutions to government problems. Today, there are two growing movements that may lure young people into the cage match of political participation. Critical Thinking Question: How are we going to get all of the corruption, and abuse, and predation out of our government? Followed by some other questions that make equally as much sense (none). Topic: Stephanie Murphy and George Mandrik join me to discuss their experiences and lessons learned from the 2008 Ron Paul Presidential Campaign. We also ruminate on what motivates people to participate in politics in the first place.
