On Saturday May 31st, 2025, BAOS threw their first-ever craft beer festival at Blood Brothers Brewing in Toronto to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the podcast. Cee, Nate and Tiff got together to chat about how the festival went down, the challenges of throwing events, they did a few deep dives into some of the beers and how they came out, how moving it was that so many people came out to the event and supported, the amazing merch from Zenan, our unique selling proposition for the event, stories about Deejay T-Jr. and A Cookie Called Quest, the incredible volunteers who kept the service impeccably fast, the blending process for a few of the collabs, everything that Erica did to put this thing together, and how cool Dustin and Brayden of Blood Brothers are for believing in the vision. They got into a gang of the collab beers - Tooth & Nail x BAOS BrewHead New Zealand Pilsner, Flora Hall x BAOS English Dark Mild, Royal City x BAOS Nighttime Natter Schwarzbier, All My Friends x BAOS Chemistry Terpene IPA, 5e Baron x BAOS CenTENnial West Coast IPA, Small Pony Barrel Works x BAOS Yowie Barrel-Aged Imperial Pastry Stout, Noctem Artisans Brasseurs x BAOS Moggie Double IPA, and Dominion City x BAOS Velvet Voyage Baltic Porter. https://www.discogs.com/release/445594-Fanmail-The-Latest-Crazehttps://www.amazon.com/Latest-Craze-Fanmail/dp/B00000J802Scott Silleta:Following his departure from Plankeye in July 1998, Silletta formed the Christian pop-punk band Fanmail that year. In 1999, Fanmail released an extended play, Here Comes Fanmail EP, and their debut studio album, The Latest Craze, with the former containing a cover of The Police's 1983 single "Every Breath You Take." In the same year, the band's only music video, "Rock and Roll Star", was released;[18] it was directed by Derek Dale. Fanmail's second studio album, Fanmail 2000, was released in 2000 and included a cover of the Backstreet Boys' 1999 single "I Want It That Way"; it was the band's last release before the group disbanded in 2002. The band's song "Superfan" was featured on the soundtrack to the 2001 movie Extreme Days[19] as well as in the film. "Rock and Roll Star" and the band's cover of "I Want It That Way" appeared on the Tooth & Nail Tenth Anniversary compilation in 2003.[20] Silletta formed another Christian punk rock band, The Franchise, which released one studio album, Original Inevitable, on his Vanishing Point Records label on August 12, 2003.[21][22] Silletta later released a solo album, The Life and Times of..., on June 17, 2011.[23]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlankeyeSome Geocities Website:The Review:Raiting: B+Fanmail has just released their first album. Its an EP with four songs. It is called "Here Comes Fanmail." Let me start by telling you that the lead singer used to be in Plankeye and the guitarist from Slick Shoes. Fanmail combines both types of music. The music sounds like Plankeye but with a more punk edge. If you liked Plankeye you will definitely like Fanmail. Fanmail is much better of a band than Plankeye. It is only around $5 and I suggest giving it a try. I would have liked a couple more songs but it is still good. The Band:Scott Silletta - Vocals, GuitarDale Yob - GuitarJason Fleetwood - Bass, BGVJason Feltman - Drumshttps://www.oocities.org/sunsetstrip/stage/1512/fanmail/Ridiculous interview with Scott, late 2000https://www.skruttmagazine.se/fanmaileng.htmAllMusic bio:Featuring members of 90-lb Wuss, the Cootees, Plankeye, Slick Shoes, Value Pac and Rainy Days, Fanmail could be considered as a Christian punk super group. Joined by Yob (guitar's/bgv's) , Fleetwood (bass) and Jason (drums), Fanmail evidently enjoy playing there peculiar brand of high energy, hard edged pop punk rock for those willing enough to latch onto 'The Latest Craze'. Scott has matured both his performance and song-writing since the early days of Plankeye, as Fanmail's debut album clearly demonstrates. Scott and co poke fun at at life with tongues firmly planted in cheeks; simultaneously directing the listener to Christ. Topics range from the deceit of fame ('Rock And Roll Star"), the celebration of family ('Jordi') and the need for humility ('Wonderful Punches'). 'The Latest Craze' is packed full of well produced and executed songs at the hands of Scott Silletta and Gene Eugene; where a truly original, yet familiar style is not only realised but also maintained throughout. Be a true fanatic, get into ' The Latest Craze'!https://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/products/Fanmail/The_Latest_Craze/911/Release Date: 17 June 1999https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/fanmail/the-latest-craze/Pastor Dave's Playlist May 7, 20185. “Turn off that Radio” by FanmailScott Silleta, the band's frontman, was one of my rock n'roll heroes when I was in high school. I was pretty much obsessed with him for a while. So, when he left the Christian rock band Plankeye and started a pop-punk band I followed right along. Fanmail was, admittedly, not great but Silletta's inclusion had me hooked. This song from their first album The Latest Craze (1999) is fairly pointless in lyrical content, with the chorus simply repeating “turn off that radio” over and over again. For whatever reason, however, is stuck with me this week and was a good, fun, blast.https://pastordaveonline.org/2018/05/07/this-weeks-good-music-14/LA Times Interview, March 9, 2001“I've long been against the whole labeling mechanism that Christians have given themselves and the box it has put them in,” said Cummings during an interview at the Hub Cafe in Fullerton. “Declaring you have to act in a certain way or sing only songs that praise the Lord serves to stifle art and creativity.”“It's weird. It's like we're stuck in the middle somewhere,” Guyton added. “The secular market won't touch us because we're Christians, and the Christian market won't either because we're not Christian enough.”What irks front man Silletta--a former member of Plankeye, one of Orange County's most successful Christian rock bands--is the false idolization he says he has encountered. He addresses the issue in “Hero,” a song on “Fanmail 2000,” the follow-up to 1999's debut, “Latest Craze,” both released on Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records.“After shows in my old band, people would touch me and cry . . . really silly stuff like that,” said Silletta, who formed Fanmail in 1998 because of creative tensions within Plankeye.“They build you into this superhero in their mind, expecting all kinds of things from you. But when you don't live up to those expectations, they tear you down. When MxPx left Tooth & Nail [in 1998] for a major label [A&M; Records], they were slammed for [allegedly] not being Christians anymore. I know those guys firsthand. . . . I don't know anyone with more integrity than the three guys in that band.”…With the release of “Fanmail 2000,” the band fulfilled its contractual obligation to Tooth & Nail and, according to Silletta, has declined to sign a new, five-album deal. Fanmail, whose members range from ages 29 to 42, is looking to expand its local fan base with a series of shows here. They're also hoping to attract major label interest.“One of the good things about Tooth & Nail is that their [products are] distributed by EMI,” Silletta said. “It's been fantastic to have our CDs available at all the retail outlets. The problem, though, is that I have, in two different bands, been under contract with them since ‘93, and I just feel like it's time to work with someone else that can take our music to the next level.”https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-mar-09-me-35371-story.html
Ottawa's Tooth & Nail is both one of Ontario's most heralded and more underrated breweries at the same time. They've made our Top 10 Breweries in Ontario list every year due to their incredibly well-crafted beers, and it's a crime that we waited three years to catch up with Matty. Cee and Nate chatted with Matt about how they got their initial traction via Vim & Vigor, why he doesn't dry hop Pilsners, why foam is essential in beer, when beer stopped being a hobby, how they came up with their Extra Pale Ale, Matt's desert island beers, his love for Belgian beers and his collab project with Bim of Godspeed, why Centennial might be the GOAT of hops, and the importance of educating the consumer. They got into Grace & Gratitude Whole Cone Saaz Hop Lager, Vim & Vigor Pilsner, Exile Extra Pale Ale, Valor Classic Saison, Rabble Rouser India Pale Ale, and Fortitude Stout. This was impeccable - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Colin Kimble is the former bass player for the band As Cities Burn. Colin and I go way back from when I used to book ACB in the midwest. This conversation was much needed and was a great opportunity to reconnect with an old fried. As cities Burn has always had an incredible impact on my life from the very first time I saw them in a random warehouse in Wichita, KS. Colin and I talk about the band, The records SILYAYD, Come Now Sleep, and Hell or Highwater as well as touring in the past. It was cool to hear stories of the maturation of ACB as well as Colin's brief up of coffee with the band Oh Sleeper, and his turning down of a chance to play in Manchester orchestra. Matt Johnson, former Mars Hill elder and drummer in the "Christians in a band not Christian Band" bands Roadside Monument, Blenderhead, and Raft of Dead Monkeys talks with us about the pre-Mars Hill 1990s Seattle Christian punk community, centered around Calvary Chapel in the University District, where Damien Jurado, Dave Bazan and many others also attended. We talk about his time in those bands, particularly Roadside Monument, who recently played a reunion show at Furnace Fest. We had the pleasure of interviewing Valleyheart over Zoom video!Massachusetts trio VALLEYHEART, who craft dynamic, cinematic alternative rock earmarked by lyrical eloquence and sweet melodies, recently released their second album Heal My Head, via Tooth & Nail.Valleyheart continue to build an emotional bond with audiences everywhere. Following the 2017 Nowadays EP, they deepened this connection with their debut album, Everyone I've Ever Loved, in 2018. “Friends In The Foyer” eclipsed 877K Spotify streams as the band took home “Rock Artist of the Year” at the 2019 Boston Music Awards. On its heels, the Scenery EP arrived to widespread acclaim. FLOOD noted, “they explore powerful, accessible soundscapes in an adequately sized package,” and Substream Magazine hailed them as “equal parts boldness and beauty.” Throughout 2020 and 2021, they assembled what would become Heal My Head at sessions at The Halo Studio in Portland, ME with longtime collaborator and co-producer Kevin Billingslea and at The Record Company in Boston, MA. Kevin Billingslea and Kevin Klein co-engineered, co-produced, and co-mixed the album, with a portion of the record being self-produced by Klein at his home studio. We want to hear from you! Lee Humerian was the drummer for Phinehas for nearly a decade. He is a very classic stereotype of a Tooth & Nail kid who followed his passion for music, energy and mission for God. Lee was drawn from music into full-time missions landing him in Ukraine in 2014. He and his family have made a home and life there during the escalating conflict over the last few years. I felt this was a great opportunity to get the perspective of someone from our world on a world that seems so foreign and unimaginable to me. This conversation is both fascinating, powerful & heartbreaking, and I'm glad you introduce you to a special person like Lee. It's one thing to be a Christian in a public space, but it's quite another thing to bear the mantle of being a "Christian band" when you're in your early 20s and playing music for millions of people around the world. Chris Dudley is a devout Christian and his band, Underoath, started out with the label of being a "Christian band" releasing their two most popular albums under the Tooth & Nail record label. But what does it mean to be a "Christian band?" What are the expectations thrust upon you? How do you answer questions that you're not equipped to answer as an inexperienced youth? How does the label shift and change as individual philosophies change and priorities shift? Chris talks through his experiences answering all these questions through Underoath's rise in popularity to their breakup to their reunion and redefining themselves as a group that has moved away from, as they say in their own words, "the realm of seemingly impenetrable polemics." ABOUT CHRIS Chris has played keyboards and synthesizers for Underoath since 2000 and has recorded and performed 8 albums (and counting!). Just like 2017, we're delivering back-to-back Ottawa episodes to give the long-time listeners a little touch of nostalgia. Tooth & Nail, while only just over 5 years old, are regularly mentioned in the same breath with some of the breweries in Canada. Their Vim & Vigor Pilsner is highly regarded universally as one of the best examples we have in our fine land, and their owner and founder Matt Tweedy joined us for another fantastic chat. While Nathan from NathanDoesBeer and the BAOS Blog was supposed to co-host, due to a health-related issue he had to bow out and Noah Forrest of Beerism gracefully stepped in to fill his enormous shoes. We chatted with Matt for over 3 hours about all of his phenomenal beer, the ridiculousness of the haze-focused questions we asked back in 2017, their COVID pivot and a lot more while drinking Lupo Solitario (single-hopped Kellerpils with Diamant hops), Valor (saison), and their St. Patrick's Day stout 4 pack (Fortitude, Fornication, Fortified and Fortissimo 2020). Huge episode with some genuine gems from Matt. Get it in ya! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Lead singers tend to get and often deserve the most attention in most bands. They carry a large burden and the spotlight is not at all easy to manage, but some of the most talented and valuable people are not the ones in the limelight. Randy Torres has done it all in the Tooth & Nail world, and he has done it well. Guitarist for Project 86, engineer for Aaron Sprinkle, A&R for the label, touring musician for Anberlin, composer, sound designer and more. Coming from a supportive environment in SoCal at just the right time in the late 90's, Randy has been able to make a great career for himself and that career is marked mainly by how personable and likable and easy to work with he is. He has been a great inspiration of how to be for many people including me. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Project 86 "The Spy Hunter" Stavesacre "Threshold" The Blamed "Feeding the Ignorant" Living Sacrifice "Reject" Project 86 "Spill Me" Project 86 "One Armed Man (Play On)" Jonezetta "Get Ready (Hot Machete)" Anberlin "The Feel Good Drag" NYVES "Something Divine" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Hangnail is an old school classic Tooth & Nail punk band and is back with new holiday music! It's their first new music in 17 years. This seemed like a good occasion to hang out with the whole band and look all the way back to the mid 90's as this group of best friends in high school, who never had a lineup change and were first generation Tooth & Nail kids just trying to play cover songs until they got their first big opportunity at Cornerstone '98. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Hangnail "O Come All Ye Faithful" Plankeye "Goodbye" Slick Shoes "Fall" Stavesacre "Keep Waiting" Further Seems Forever "Pictures of Shorelines" Hangnail "Friendly Advice (Live 2002)" Hangnail "I'm Only Human" Hangnail "All That I Wanted" Hangnail "Survey of Self" Hangnail "One Small Child (feat Josh Kemble)" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Acceptance is a Tooth & Nail artist a couple of decades in the making. They just made and released their first album on Tooth & Nail called Wild, Free this year. But it was right here in the Seattle Tacoma area where Acceptance was founded in 2003, right at the time that Tooth & Nail was transitioning to the new sound with the explosion of the 2nd generation. Acceptance, who were first generation Tooth & Nail kids, teamed up with Aaron Sprinkle, and instead of taking the indie path, they were one of the first bands to be scooped up by a major label right off the bat and in a lot of ways were the major’s guinea pigs. they created a landmark album called Phantoms that became a legend of the scene, but the band never truly found a groove before disbanding in 2006. Their music, however, would continue to rise in popularity thereafter, and is still known as a flagship Seattle band. Slick Shoes is back and full of new life. It's not uncommon for bands to reunite these days, but it's often just to play through an old album or do a reunion tour. Occasionally, reuniting bands put out new music. Some times that music is good, but rarely does it capture the full original spirit or energy of the band's former youthful self, but in this case, Slick Shoes has in fact done that. It has been 17 years since their last album, and the new music is killer. 2003 was pretty much the year that the Tooth & Nail scene had fully completed its generational change from punk and pop punk to the rising emo and screamo. This conversation with the full band really helps to paint the picture of that transition. The Juliana Theory’s biggest album, Emotion Is Dead, one of the most legendary in the Tooth & Nail catalog, just reached its 20 year anniversary. This episode explores the conditions in which the band and particularly the frontman Brett Detar emerged. The western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia scene, from which Zao and The Juliana Theory are from is another hot spot that emerged and connected to the wider scene in the late 90’s in part by connecting to the Arkansas scene with Barry Poynter through Bruce from Living Sacrifice. Bret was the guitarist in Zao, and lead singer for The Juliana Theory. Both wildly successful 90’s groups and often listed among the favorites of bands of the subsequent generation, many of whom were known for fusing hardcore with sad emo elements and learning how to tie it together in a way that could reach an even wider audiences with some pop appeal. Tooth & Nail goes global in the mid 90’s by acquiring and licensing Christian metal bands from Norway: Extol, Lengsel, and Selfmindead. This episode explores how kids growing up on the other side of the world were having parallel experiences to kids here with regards to discovering heavy music and finding identity amidst struggles with authority and religion, and in just the same way, great and influential music was created to express those feelings that resonated with others. Along with the rise of the mail-order scene and the internet, global connections were able to be made musically with other like-minded people who would then have the opportunity to influence one another. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Extol “Undeceived” The Crucified “The Pit” Fold Zandura “Samovar” Selfmindead “One Step Forward” Pedro the Lion “Penetration” Extol “Gloriana” Benea Reach “Ground Slayer” BANKS “Gemini Feed” Mantric “Polyanna” Asuza “Interstellar Island” Asuza “Memories of an Old Emotion” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Frodus was a pioneer post hardcore band whose influence is larger than their footprint ever was. This important group was recognized early by Brandon and Tooth & Nail, who acquired Frodus, a non-Christian from the 90’s DC punk scene that transitioned into the Tooth & Nail world as part of the recipe for the success of the scene we all know and love being built. These origins and early attractions to the danger of music and new movements is something we all feel or felt at some point to varying degrees, but Nate particularly embodies that mindset and is able to articulate the experience quite well. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Frodus “The Misaligned Men of Flomation” Roadside Monument “Sperm Ridden Burden” Live at Cornerstone ’02 Starflyer 59 “I Drive A Lot” Demon Hunter “Lifewar” Refused "Rather Be Dead" Thrice cover of Frodus’ “The Earth Isn’t Humming” Live Frodus “Red Bull of Juarez” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 28 Matt MacDonald from The Classic Crime was not a first or second generation Tooth & Nail kid; he and his band just happened to intersect with the label and the scene right near its peak. With their polished commercial sound, aspirations of mainstream success, a hotshot management team, and Tooth & Nail's partnership with EMI, upstreaming them into the big leagues seemed like a solid bet. The expectations were understandably high all around. Many special opportunities would come their way, but ultimately, the music industry and the indie scene had a few curveballs up their sleeve, giving Matt some unexpected opportunities to learn lessons he was not hoping to learn. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: The Classic Crime “The Coldest Heart” The Classic Crime “Who Needs Air” Tyson Motsenbocker “Come to California” Pedro the Lion “Almost There” MxPx “What’s Mine is Yours” Anberlin “Paper Thin Hymns” The Classic Crime “Salt in the Snow” The Classic Crime “Highlights” The Classic Crime “The Water’s Edge” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 27 Former Tooth & Nail employee, Derek Tenbusch, in many ways is a similar to Brandon Ebel. Both got their start as low level employees of a record label in southern California, because of their love for music, and thought it would be satisfying to help good art thrive. Eventually both became dissatisfied with the limited scope of those around them and sought to do more. Only Derek didn’t come from the indie-punk Christian scene, he worked for the corporate giant that controlled Tooth & Nail and with whom Brandon was having conflict. So maybe it was fate that brought Derek to work directly for Tooth & Nail and push millions of records into mainstream outlets for the first time, or maybe it was that they were like-minded people like to work hard for big results by collaborating on a small and focused creative team of people who all believe in something far more important than just a paycheck or the status that comes with a title. This is the same thing that motivates musicians, fans, and people like the interns who work so hard at places like record labels. However, it becomes increasingly more rare to see the people at the higher levels of responsibility actually continue to posses this type of motivation. They often fall into one of two traps: trying to do less work for more money, or being concerned with their own power and not the furthering of there original aim. These patterns extend far beyond the music industry and can be applied everywhere, but in this particular case, we also get a really clear picture of just what the music industry was and maybe still is like at the larger scale and get to reflect on the time period when Tooth & Nail and its small team was having massive impact in a collapsing industry. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: He Is Legend “The Seduction” Starflyer 59 “All My Friends Who Play Guitar” mewithoutYou Live at Cornerstone Norma Jean “Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste” Mae “We’re So far Away” Underoath “Young and Aspiring” Emery “Walls” Live Beloved “Only Our Faces Hide” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 25 It was just over one year ago when we began this series and covered the formation of Tooth & Nail at the tiniest little trickle of house shows, Calvary Chapels, and community centers organized by people like Billy Power followed by the rise of Cornerstone with John Herrin as the scene began to emerge. We've traveled quite a long way to get here, and today we reach the high watermark. It's a couple of decades of community building, talent compiling, large technological leaps, an exploding genre, a sharp and well oiled indie label, the perfect band (Underoath), at the perfect time, and all of that backed and supercharged by a multi-billion dollar global cooperation. This episode covers Underoath's 2006 album, "Define The Great Line," with guitarist Tim McTauge and features Brandon Ebel. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Salmarnir" Underoath "Everyone Looks So Good From Here" Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Casting Such a Thin Shadow" Underoath "Writing On The Walls" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 24 There is no question that Underoath is the biggest Christian heavy band of our scene. They completely broke the ceiling of what was assumed was possible beyond our scene, but what are all the factors that go into a landmark success story like that of Underoath? In a sense, this podcast so far is a list and account of many of those factors, or maybe it's just "They’re Only Chasing Safety" was directly born out of the Tooth & Nail culture. It was a perfect wave that had been built by thousands of people collaborating and supporting one another and as they grew and gained momentum, the wave was ready to break, and Underaoth was the perfect band to harness its energy and break our scene wide open into the mainstream and become Tooth & Nail's biggest rock band to date. My favorite viewpoint for this story is that of Tim McTague's, who at that time was something like Underoath's quarterback. Not only is he a giant of an artist and musician, but at age 21, he took the responsibility to handle their business. As we have seen in this series, the biggest pitfalls are often managing the managers, agents, labels, lawyers, promoters, pressure from other bands, and fans, all of whom desperately want something from the band, and in Underoath's case, turn the intensity of all that up about 10x, starting with the release of "They're Only Chasing Safety." https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White" Zao "Times of Separation" Strongarm "Suplication" Underoath "There Could Be Nothing After This" Underoath "When the Sun Sleeps" Underoath "A Message for Adrienne" Live Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Underoath "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Live Underoath "Salmarnir" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Also, apparently he makes for a pretty good pickup line.

Chapter 22 The guys in Emery grew up as far from punk and underground culture as you could get. Not until their twenties did they even find out about this whole scene. But they made up for lost time, and thanks to the foundations laid by the earlier bands, the explosion of this new scene, and the peak of the Tooth & Nail merger with EMI, Emery rode a wave of success and got used to it a little too quickly. Chapter 21 Dead Poetic is one of the bands that was discovered at cornerstone, and due to their hard work and dedication as kids, stepped into just the right place at just the right time. The groundwork had been laid by the pioneers of the scene, the infrastructure was in place, and Tooth & Nail, partnered with EMI was at the top of the mountain. Killer production, promotion, and exposure were no problem at all, and the specific sound that Dead Poetic had been developing was about to explode. The band would achieve success, sales, and opportunities that would dwarf most of the artists that preceded them. And yet, front man Brandon Rike gave it all up. Chapter 18 This isn't a Norma Jean episode per se, because of Norma Jean’s legend and significance in the heavy music scene. SolidState and Tooth & Nail history is much too large to begin to cover in an episode, so we will cover it from a variety of angles over time. But as far as Norma Jean goes, Cory Brandan is certainly a very central figure, and his career in this scene intersects multiple important bands and he is one of the very few individuals that has been able to find a way to thrive (although sometimes merely survive) and contribute for 20 years. Cory has been able to find or create paths when it seemed that none existed. What's even more hard to imagine is that Cory stayed focused on creating music and found his way despite the fact that by 1994 at the age of 18 he had already had his first child. I talked to Cory about his journey and mindset beginning with his first band Eso Charis, his connection to Living Sacrifice, and how he eventually became the leader of the almighty Norma Jean. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Norma Jean "Vertabraille" Eso Charis "Born With a Future" Living Sacrifice "Reborn Empowered" Eso Charis "The Narrowing List" Living Sacrifice "Imminent War" Empty "From a Chemist's Point of View" Norma Jean "The Human Face Divine" Norma Jean "The Shotgun Message" Norma Jean "1,000,000 Watts" Norma Jean "Blueprints for a Future Home" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 15 Today's episode is intended to give you an inside and personal perspective on Tooth & Nail, Brandon Ebel, and the music scene as the label grew into its 2000’s dominance. Anneka Winters was an accountant at Tooth & Nail Records from 1998 to 2004, but she was much more than just an accountant. She assisted and worked with Jim Worthen and also became Brandon's Personal Assistant, she lived in a communal house with other Tooth & Nail employees, and she was around through the biggest staff and culture change in the company, driven in part by the merger with EMI, the shift in genres, and the success of BEC Records. Oh, Sleeper is a special band on the Solid State roster, and a truly unique metal band. They very much embody the DIY ethic and artistic zone of the Christian punk/hardcore scene, but the members didn't come up as Tooth & Nail punk and hardcore kids like many guests on this show. Frontman Micah Kinard explains on this Labeled special that they come more from the mainstream mall metal and nu metal scene until he discovered our culture beginning with Norma Jean. Chapter 14 Today we continue on our early 2000’s journey with the very important and pivotal Anberlin (Stephen Christian). I refer to Anberlin as pivotal, because they began as a pop punk band in the vein of late 90's Tooth & Nail, but made an image and musical pivot at just exactly the right time, along with a crop other emerging bands from the southeast, which in turn helped Tooth & Nail pivot and transition to a new era. Tooth & Nail has just acquired Takehold Records and its founder, Chad Johnson, to be head of A&R, and his connections began to pay off. Chapter 13 We now continue to move into the 2000’s era of Tooth & Nail Records. Brandon has sold half of the company to EMI and has purchased and absorbed Takehold Records, which brought its founder Chad Johnson on staff. Heavy music was continuing to explode, but also, in keeping with the Tooth and Nail style, Brandon and the staff continued to try to break and include a very wide variety of artists, including a very happy and poppy rock outfit from San Luis Obispo, CA, called Watashi Wa. Fronted by yet another young man who grew up as a Tooth & Nail kid, Seth Roberts joins Labeled to help paint the picture of that time and the unique challenges they faced. The story is of one dream fulfilled, and of another only partially fulfilled. “Ideas of fascism, sexuality, gore, violence, and vomit all erupts into this one package of Raft of Dead Monkeys. This is dream logic, seemingly never second guessing any impulse that they had at this point in their musical careers…” - Nick Toti Raft of Dead Monkeys was a rock band from Seattle, WA, known for their controversy within the Christian punk scene. The band featured LOR show guests Jeff Bettger lead vocal, and Matt Johnson drums. Described as a hypothetical band mocking rock culture, their early stage shows consisted of vulgar lyrics, male strippers, and bloody nurses. In an interview, Jeff Bettger (JSuffering) explained the band's concept with the following: It was art, and we were making some statements about our culture by mirroring it, copying it and throwing it back in people’s faces to say, “Hey, this is what people adhere to and this is it.” We thought it was funny and humorous, and a lot of people didn’t get the joke, and didn’t get that we were characters we created when we performed sort of to break the Rock ‘n’ Roll idea/lifestyle, although we don’t really have that idea or lifestyle, at least I don’t. The majority of the band members were openly Christian and previously played in bands on Tooth & Nail Records, a label that featured primarily Christian rock bands. The band itself was not affiliated with Tooth & Nail, but the fan base of affiliated bands (Roadside Monument, Ninety Pound Wuss) was largely Christian and was left bewildered when Raft released their first album which contained explicit lyrics. In 2001 Raft was invited to play Tomfest, a Christian underground music festival, and received mixed reactions when singer Jeff Suffering fingered the crowd during their song Two Year Lease, which features the lyrics, "you're not the only whore in town, you're just the best fuck around." Tomfest founder Mikee Bridges later issued an apology to those who were offended by the performance. They broke up on October 22, 2001. This hour long sit down with Nick Toti (Interesting Productions), creator of THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF SEATTLE: a documentary about Raft of eDad Monkeys. Is a fun rollercoaster ride of interesting stories about Raft as well as the journey of creating this wonderfully dark documentary. Nick, often inspired by avant-garde movements found this artistic feel in Raft and became a fan of their art and music. His film company Interesting Productions is a non-profit production/distribution company that was founded by Nick Toti and Matt Latham. They make movies and give them away for free. I have, to be honest. Only in the last two years have I branched out from the pale, entertainment driven, society I called home for so long, to engage documentaries and truly enjoy them. This is a documentary about a band that seemed religiously suppressed and was ready to explode into an artistic cluster fuck mocking the times. In my opinion, Raft succeeded.
