Tony joined the British Army in 1995, as a Probationary 2nd Lieutenant on a Short Service Limited Commission, and later joined both the Regular and Reserve services. He served a total of 19 years, reaching the rank of Major (Maj). In this episode Tony talks about growing up and his ambition to join the British Army, sharing his journey with courses at Sandhurst on multiple occasions, and being part of Regular Army units as an officer. This included over seeing tasks for the 2001 country wide epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease, before seeing the impact of 9/11, and as a result deploying to Iraq.Tony shares his deployment to Iraq and the return home, which included his transfer to the Army Reserves. Whilst carrying out his duties as part of the Army Reserves at home in the UK, he moved to the Philippines and worked with the British Embassy, and then later worked alongside the British Army in Afghanistan as the chief of operations in a civilian contractor capacity. After leaving the British Army he found a role with the charity Walking With The Wounded.Watch Episode on YouTubePart 1: youtu.be/99wbqzVWC9MPart 2: youtu.be/5elzVly52vATikTok:tiktok.com/@militaryveteranspodcastInstagram:instagram.com/militaryveteranspodcastX:twitter.com/MilVetPodcastLinkedIn:linkedin.com/company/military-veterans-podcastMerchandise:milvetpodcast.com/merchSend us a textMessage at the beginning of the recording is from your host Gav, giving you information on how you can support the show through Patreon.Supporting monthly would help the show record future episodes and help with the upkeep of the show. £5 a month will give you access to bonus recordings, where Gav and the guest chat about things that don't make it into the main recording. In this enlightening episode, we are joined by Tony Hulton, Chief Executive Officer of Walking with the Wounded. Tony shares the critical work his organisation is doing to support ex-service personnel in the UK. The discussion spans across various support services provided by the charity, including mental health, social work, employment support, and tackling digital exclusion. This episode offers valuable insights for those who care about veterans and their reintegration into civilian life. Tony begins by introducing Walking with the Wounded, a national charity founded 14 years ago during the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Initially focused on helping physically injured veterans re-enter the workforce, the organisation has since expanded its scope to address a broader range of issues. Today, they offer three core services: Headstart, Care Coordination, and Individual Placement Services. Headstart provides mental health and therapy services tailored for veterans, addressing not only PTSD but also general mental health needs. Care Coordination, akin to social work, is specifically designed for those with armed forces experience. Individual Placement Services offer employment support that goes beyond job placement to include ongoing assistance. Tony explains the unique challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. Everyday tasks that civilians take for granted, such as applying for a passport or a rental agreement, can be daunting for those accustomed to the structured life within the military. The organisation recognises that while many veterans transition smoothly, a significant minority encounter difficulties that often manifest 10 to 14 years after leaving the service. These issues can include unemployment, underemployment, debt, and family breakdowns. Employment is a critical area of focus for Walking with the Wounded. Veterans possess valuable skills such as leadership, management, and teamwork, making them highly desirable employees. However, challenges can arise years after their service ends, as skills may fade and confidence may wane. Tony emphasises the importance of ongoing support for veterans in employment, ensuring they can leverage their skills effectively in civilian roles. Walking with the Wounded employs around 90 staff, including 60 frontline workers. The charity's approach involves building trust with veterans and creating personalised care plans. A freelance adventurer?! Yes, you heard that right! You may recognise Levison Wood from his documentaries about walking such as Walking the Nile. He's supporting charity Walking with the Wounded and spoke to Freelance Feels about his own freelance work, the mental health benefits of walking and the parallels between freelancing and exploring.   Walking With The Wounded Walking With The Wounded ‘WWTW' deliver employment, mental health, care coordination and volunteering programmes in collaboration with the NHS to get those who served, and their families, whether mentally, socially or physically wounded, back on their feet and making a positive contribution once more. Why? Because those who served, deserve. Walking Home For Christmas This winter, thousands of people will be Walking Home For Christmas in support of armed forces veterans across the country. The campaign, which runs from 9 to 20 December, is Walking With The Wounded's annual nationwide fundraising walking challenge to support its work across mental health, employment, volunteering and care coordination.   An estimated 5 million veterans live in the UK. While most of the 15,000+ personnel who leave the forces each year have a successful transition to civilian life, a small but significant minority do not. Walking With The Wounded supports those who served, and their families, to thrive. There are three key aspects to this year's Walking Home For Christmas campaign: #WalkWithAndy Andy, a former military police officer, will be walking 350 kilometres from the Cenotaph in London to Manchester Cenotaph. He aims to complete this extraordinary challenge in just five days, leaving London on 5 December and arriving in Manchester on 9 December. Organised regional walks New for 2022, Walking With The Wounded has organised regional walks in London, Manchester, and Newcastle on the 9 December. Participants can raise vital funds – and their heart rate – at one of these fun large-scale events. Everyone is welcome. Walk your own way Participants can complete their own fundraising walk  - of any distance and at a location of their choosing - between 9 and 20 December. Some participants opt to walk their children home from school, others walk between offices with colleagues, and there are those who undertake a walk in memory of someone special or between locations that mean something to them.  www.walkinghomeforchristmas.com    Research Research from the charity finds that fewer than 1 in 3 (29%) of the UK adult population walk every day in winter – and astonishingly 10% never go for a walk. But when it comes to improving health and wellbeing, 68% would consider trying to go on a regular walk - compared to 1 in 10 (11%) interested in group fitness classes and 1 in 5 (22%) who would think about joining a gym. #walkingwiththewounded #walkingformentalhealth #freelancing #selfemployed #levisonwood #levwood #walkingthenile #walkinghomeforchristmas

A bit of an unusual episode this week as it was produced in two parts. I interviewed a friend of mine, Mat Poole, a couple of days before he departed for the Sahara desert to take part in the infamous Marathon des Sables.   At the start of this episode I share the notes I made during this call with Mat, where I asked him about his hopes and fears, logistics and expectations of the event.   Then in the interview itself we find out how it went, and how close to his expectations it came!   In a challenge like this there are always lessons to be learned and I was interested to try and extract them in a way that could be useful to you and I in more day to day areas of our lives.   Mat was raising money for the charity Walking With The Wounded who support mentally, socially and physically wounded veterans.   For a few more weeks following the publication of this episode the Just Giving page will be open should you care to donate: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/matp

Whether we find role models at home, in our schools, hospitals or on the big screen, they have a lasting effect on us all. SGT Kirstie Ennis inspires everyone in her path, ever since finding her own inspiration to help others who can’t help themselves. This dates back to her enlistment in the Marine Corps at age 17, growing up with not one, but two Marine parents.During her second deployment to Afghanistan in June 2012, Kirstie sustained polytraumatic injuries from a helicopter crash including traumatic brain injury, facial and spine injuries, and leg trauma that eventually left her with an amputation above the knee. After being hurt overseas, Kirstie went on to become a Paralympian snowboarder, a proud contestant at Prince Harry’s 2016 Invictus Games, and a member of a Veteran team on a 1000 mile trek across Great Britain with the organization Walking With The Wounded. She continues to push herself every day while giving back to others through mountaineering and world travel. Since 2016, Kirstie set out to climb the Seven Summits (the highest peaks on every continent), having climbed Four of Seven so far. In May 2019 she was just 650 feet from the top of Mount Everest and had to turn back because her team was running out of oxygen, but without any surprise, she plans to return in 2021.Upon taking the stage accepting the 2019 Pat Tilman Award for Service at the ESPYs, Kirstie said… “I am one of the lucky ones who came home. Broken, but I am still here and I still can. So I will continue every day for those who can’t....Let this be my message tonight: Rest a moment less, endure a fraction more and try to make peace with whatever your pain may be.”Thank you Sgt Kirstie Ennis for your inspiration, and HBN wishes you the best as you complete the final three of the Seven Summits...For more information go to The Kirstie Ennis Foundation. We would like to thank our two rehabilitation guests on this episode, Ms Anne Packard and Mr. Ben Cole, and best of luck with your next chapters at home. Inge Solheim is a free spirit, a new-age explorer, and a wilderness guide-guru whose sense of freedom hinges upon not caring, at all, about what other people think of him. Leading trips to the most remote places in the world with diverse groups—ranging from scientists, to private clients, to film crews, to people with disabilities—Solheim trains those who are with him to overcome extreme physical and psychological barriers. Among his most memorable expeditions are a trip to the South Pole with Mark Pollock, who had lost his eyesight nine years prior, and a North Pole expedition with an organization called Walking With The Wounded, accompanied by Prince Harry and a team of English wounded soldiers. Born in Norway, he grew up in a rather dysfunctional family that left him mostly to his own devices. From a young age, he turned to nature, learning to appreciate solitude—and to be self-sufficient. At 14, Solheim started working at a pizza shop at which he would become a shareholder within a year. At 19, Solheim’s daughter, Marian, was born, and he transitioned into a nine-year “mundane” (his word) finance job, eventually becoming VP of a bank in Norway. While the career prestige was exhilarating in its own right, his passion led him to take on adventure traveling as a full-time profession. A rare combination of old soul, hopeless romantic, and youthful pioneer, Solheim chases beauty and adventure, living peripatetically: He resides part-time in Oslo and finds himself gravitating toward Malibu, California, two to three months a year. Reaching the middle of his life, Solheim remains optimistic about almost everything—even climate change—and is currently working on sustainable tourism and travel business. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Solheim and Andrew Zuckerman get philosophical about what it means to be an explorer at a time in which it’s practically never been easier to get anywhere in the world; confronting fear, anxiety, and pressure; trauma and its effect on our perceptions of time; and instant gratification and materialism.

My guest this week is world record breaking mountaineer and adventurer, Jake Meyer In this episode we talk about being too cool for school, the dangers of getting out of the wrong side of the bed, embracing stress and the importance of choosing the right team mates when your life is in their hands.  Bio Jake Meyer is an experienced public speaker whose incredible story of climbing Mt Everest aged only 21 is an inspirational tale of determination, tenacity and an unerring will to succeed. Jake was only 14 when he set his sights on wanting to climb the ‘7 Summits’ – the highest mountain on each continent. At 6.30am on the 4th June 2005, aged only 21 and 135 days old, he reached the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world and his 7th continental highpoint. At the time, he was the youngest Briton to climb Mt Everest, and the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits. Not content with just the 7 Summits, he also holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest mountain in each of the 48 states in the contiguous USA. This culminated in 48 mountains, 350 miles of trekking, 100,000ft of climbing and 15,000 miles of driving in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes. He has also made first ascents of mountains and routes in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest point in every county in England, and numerous expeditions to Africa and South America. In 2009 he spent 2 months in Pakistan on K2, the second highest mountain in the world and arguably the most difficult and dangerous (with a 1 in 4 death rate). He reached 7700m without oxygen before bad snow conditions forced a retreat to safety. Jake returned to K2 in 2016 as part of the first British Team to attempt the mountain in over a decade – which was described as ‘probably the strongest team on the mountain’. Again unfortunately, the summit wasn’t to be – during the summit attempt, a huge avalanche destroyed Camp 3 (7300m), calling a halt to all climbing for that season. Jake will be returning to K2 in summer 2018. In 2010 Jake Meyer joined the Inspirational Development Group as a consultant. IDG offers first-class training designed to transform the behaviour of individuals and teams, and lead to sustainable change within an organisation. They offer a range of bespoke Leadership Development programmes focussing on the interlocking areas of Leadership, Followership and Partnership, to produce accomplished leaders who are also effective followers and highly skilled team players. He was an ambassador to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme, and regularly presented the Gold awards at St James’s Palace, and has worked closely with a number of charities including Walking With The Wounded, Help for Heroes, The Prince’s Trust, the Prince’s Teaching Institute, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the CAIRN Trust. Jake is also a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, and in 2012 spent 6.5 months in Afghanistan as a Battlegroup Influence and Consequence Management Officer. Jake Meyer is available as a thought-provoking, inspirational and motivational speaker for events around the world. His presentation can be tailored specifically to the audience and to fulfil the aims and objectives of the client. He is comfortable providing focused and intimate discussion with small teams of Senior Executives or presenting to large audiences of 1800+.  Recorded: 22nd November 2018 Links: More about Jake Meyer More about Maria Franzoni Ltd Connect with Maria on Linkedin Connect with Maria on FaceBook     To book any of the speakers featured on the Speaking Business podcast, click here
