When Julia and Victoria found out there was a book out there in the world which combined feminism, writing, and data (aka their three favorite things) called Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez, they absolutely had to read it for Book Club. Victoria talks very fast about women's unpaid labor, and Julia realizes she can ask the world to design things that actually fit her tiny hands. Fair Warning: This is not the book to read before bed because it will fill you with a burning feminist rage that cannot be contained.Mentioned in the Episode:The Women's Room projectDo It Like a Woman by Caroline Criado PerezOlivia RodrigoSeven-Eights PianoGender-inclusive Bible translationUS Army expanding acceptable hairstyles for womenBook Club episode on This Is Your Brain on Birth Control by Dr Sarah E HillJohn Mulaney Kid GorgeousArticle about doctors ignoring self-reported pain of black womenShark Tank on ABCThinx period underwearHuffPost article on Twitter report buttonBook Club episode on Feminist EssaysRecommendations:Perez's Invisible Women newsletterMen Explain Things to Me by Rebecca SolnitRoxanne GayThis Is Your Brain On Birth Control by Dr. Sarah E. This week on the show, I have a single mum, Julia, sharing her story. Julia has been a single mum since 2018 and is a part of my Thrive Tribe community. When Julia met her partner, their relationship progressed quite quickly and they soon moved in together. In 2013, she gave birth to their first baby which was the beginning of a spiral of trauma for Julia. Julia also suffered from PND after the birth, which was when her partner's narcissistic tendencies started showing up. Julia and her partner were married shortly before their second son was born a few years later. Gradually over the years, Julia's husband started showing some strange behavior. He lied, he was very deceptive, and he had trouble sleeping. He was also starting to get involved in violent situations with strangers. Concerned about these things, his mood swings and paranoia, and because he was starting to get sores all over his body, Julia spoke to a doctor. Not long after, Julia's husband confessed to her that he was a drug addict. Julia tried to support him but eventually she told him to leave while he sobered up after he had a psychotic episode and hit her. In 2018, Julia took their kids on a holiday, and when they returned, he had emptied the house of his belongings and moved to Queensland. In this episode, Julia also talks about: What has happened since then. The court proceedings and her ex's arrangement with the kids now. The good things that have come out of the separation and her experience and how she has loved working on herself and being a member of Thrive Tribe. The importance of having a well. Her favourite things about becoming a single mum. And SO MUCH MORE! Julia has been through a lot and is a true inspiration, and I think you will love this episode! Daughter of the late Dolores Cannon shares her insights on why channeling will be more effective during the current times The late Dolores Cannon left a lasting legacy on millions of people around the world, but no other individual could reap the teachings of Dolores more than her daughter Julia. Julia Cannon, who is a big proponent of self healing and self mastery through a set of modalities led by the landmark hypnosis instruction QHHT (Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique) says that now is the time to ignite our own inner channel. The author of the book, Soul Speak and now a new course by the same name, says that her own guides (who she feels is really her higher or soul self) have been nudging her to speak more about the individual ability and necessity to channel for yourself. But just how is this done? Can we actually develop a relationship with the “wise oracle” that on some level is us? How do we tap this intelligence and what approaches should we use? Why is it that now, in 2021, we have better access to this part of ourselves and why is it imperative that we utilize this heretofore dormant ability now more than ever? Julia and Alexis cover these questions in great detail in this upbeat and inspirational discussion. Bottom line: You CAN be your own channel! Here’s how! Don't miss our OFF THE RECORD After Show "The Private Journey" with Julia Cannon Julia Cannon was born in Hutchinson, Kansas to Johnny and Dolores Cannon. Johnny was a career Navy man, so they moved frequently and she had the advantage of an open-minded up-bringing. She was raised with the understanding that psychic phenomenon and metaphysics were common place and she was always exploring new avenues of growth. Julia became a registered nurse and worked in Intensive Care and Home Health for the duration of her 20+ year career. She then decided to explore other aspects of the healing profession and has trained in Reconnective Healing and Dolores Cannon’s Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique. Her energy healing has taken on its own dimension and has formed into something she calls “Lightcasting.” Intuitive lights come from the hands and eyes to direct energy where it is needed to balance any deficiencies in the body. This balancing may be happening on the physical, mental and/or spiritual level. While she is working in someone’s energy field, she gets intuitive messages/impressions of what is happening and what is needed to help the person bring about their healing. When Julia does remote energy work, she is taken intuitively inside the body to see what the condition looks like and then she is given methods to correct the situations. This has been a spontaneous development that continues to amaze her in its applications. Because of her nursing background, Julia brings a soothing mix of empathy, human body understanding and intuition to her work. She is available to do energy/light work in person and remotely. Julia has now written about what she has learned from working alongside of her mother Dolores Cannon in how the body communicates a special language to us. This book is "Soul Speak - The Language of Your Body." Her intuitive abilities continue to grow and she is very excited to share and help others to discover and develop their innate, natural abilities. In the latest instalment of the Real HR series, Lucinda talks to Julia Crawford. Indeed, Julia is unique in many ways, as she holds an interesting dual role; that of Head Of HR for a Kent concern, and as consultant with People Pillar, who supply "pragmatic, business focused solutions and expert HR advice" to many small businesses. Julia discusses the challenges of working from both the inside and the outside of organisations, the importance of taking risks from time to time, and the importance of confidence. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being a training professional and an HR professional are very different pursuits. Many see these two things as the same role, but they require completely different skill-sets. Taking risks is very important, or we can find ourselves in a state of stagnation. We can never quite know every variable, but unless we try we'll never know. All HR processes and skills can be learned. The main element we need to develop internally is how we interact with people, and how to be more confident in our abilities. There will never be a one-size-fits-all solution to every problem. People are complex beings, and arrive at every challenge with emotional and personal baggage that may be invisible from the outside. BEST MOMENTS 'You're the expert. You know what you're talking about. You just need to portray that' 'There are different skill-sets within that HR banner' 'I do genuinely love the problem-solving part of HR' 'I want to be able to work with small businesses where I know I can make a difference' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/ Virtual Change Superhero Training The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group Change Superhero Resources Book: How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney Free Change Toolkit: www.changesuperhero.com Latest Performance Management Blog ABOUT THE GUEST Julia Crawford is a senior HR professional with nearly 20 years' experience spanning HR consultancy, people management, employee relations, operational HR and change management. There are a lot of amazing people in the stroke community, and I get to talk with a lot of them. #PodcastPrivilege. A few weeks ago, I spoke with Debra Myerson about her book, Identity Theft. In that book, she wrote about a couple dozen other stroke survivors, including Julia Fox Garrison. Julia joins us in this episode to talk about her journey, her book, Don’t Leave Me this Way, and her philosophy of Positive Outlook = Positive Outcome. And, of course, the importance of humor in dealing with difficulty in our lives. Bio Julia is the author of Don’t Leave Me This Way (or when I get back on my feet you’ll be sorry), Harper Collins Publisher. A memoir that chronicles her struggle to regain control over her life and her body following a massive hemorrhage resulting in a paralyzing stroke. The success of the book and the message it conveys led to a new career path for Julia as a motivational speaker, evangelizing for humanity in health care, our work, and in our personal relationships. Her message is universal and transcends far beyond a survivor’s handbook. It is not only about facing adversity and overcoming, but to live life to the fullest regardless of circumstances. Julia presents at doctor, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, case manager, social worker conferences, as well as to patient advocacy groups, women’s conferences, businesses, and communities, where she shares her story of personal triumph against overwhelming odds. Julia’s life lessons will transform how to overcome and empower when the intruder called adversity knocks at our door. She will provide strategies on how to answer through attitude, choice and purpose. Julia has more than ten years of experience as an acclaimed national speaker. She is passionate about her message and relishes sharing it with receptive audiences. Most noteworthy about Julia’s success as a speaker is that all of her engagements are the result of word-of- mouth– someone hears her speak, believes in the message and, in turn, enthusiastically recommends her to some other organization. The distinguished list of client organizations continues to grow and broaden as Julia’s message touches more and more people. Before her stroke, Julia had a successful career as a manager in software customer support. Rapid advancement through the ranks of her company was within her grasp when she suffered the debilitating injury, effectively ending her career in the corporate world. And thus began her journey of rediscovery and reinvention as author, health care advocate and motivational speaker. Julia was raised in Andover, MA, in a loving if chaotic household with eight brothers, an upbringing that no doubt made her battle-ready for the literal fight for her life. Julia lives with her husband Jim, son Rory, and dog Shaggy in a suburb outside Boston, where she is working on writing projects as she continues to overcome the effects of stroke. How do we get beyond the startup phase and into the scale-up zone? And what are some of the unique challenges women face throughout this process? Today’s guest has some insight on how this transition can be made a little bit easier. Julia Pimsleur is an entrepreneur and the author of the best-selling book Million Dollar Women. During her years as a CEO, Julia has raised angel and venture capital for various startups and discovered that only 3% of all women entrepreneurs ever reach the one-million-dollar mark. Today, she aims to change that and coaches women through their business so that they can scale and grow effectively. When Julia built her language business into a multimillion-dollar business, she looked around and saw that there were very few women at that level. Despite women starting twice as many businesses than men over the last two decades, they still weren’t reaching that million-dollar mark. Julia suspected that women were running into the same kinds of problems she did when she first started out, which was what inspired her to write her book. For example, bank loans. Very few women seek financial aid, and when they do, they’re often turned down by the bank. In the Million Dollar Women® masterclass, Julia helps her students in three core areas: finances, mindset, and strategy. Finances and strategy are timeless but when it comes to mindset, women are much more cautious in their approach to scaling up, and this can hold them back significantly from growth. “I am the fourth generation of incredibly strong women.” When Julia was four years old, she was run over by the family car and pronounced dead. Somehow, she was revived and recovered from the incident without lasting harm. Julia Baird is the daughter of Nea Worrell, the amazing woman integral to the Drought Pantry at the Baradine Country Women’s Association, and previously interviewed on the podcast about the ways this drought, the worst in living memory, is impacting rural NSW, Australia. Cut from the same cloth, Julia talks to the Creating Space Project about the strength of the women in her family, from her grandmother down to her own daughter. She also talks about the faith that sustains her mother and sustains her, one that is linked to Mary MacKillop and the charism of the Josephite Sisters, also women of great strength. “She [mum] just has this attitude – you just get on with life.. I think she got that from my nan.” The intergenerational transmission of values is a process that I am very interested. Listening to Julia reflect on her family provides fascinating insight into the ways that families pass down an ethos of hard work, kindness, and never giving up. “Mum always said “You just get on with it, you’re my daughter, you know what to do, get on with it.” Family is one of the places where we shape a powerful sense of who we are, of our own identity, and this can be one of the forces that generates resilience in us. “Through the telling of these stories and the acceptance of who we were as women, I really took on, “I’m Julia, I know who I am, I have this strength, I have this power.”

Julia Fullerton-Batten is a world wide exhibited fine art photographer with a body of work that encompasses 12 major projects over ten years. The foundation of her success was “Teenage Stories” an evocative narrative of the transition of a teenage girl to womanhood. She frequently falls back on her own recollection of her early years living in Germany, the USA, and now London. Her recent projects have been labeled as difficult or controversial by some, as they deal with sensitive social issues such as feral children, or “The Act,” an intimate study of the women in the UK sex industry. Julia’s use of unusual locations, highly creative settings, street-cast models and cinematic lighting are all hallmarks of her distinctive style of photography. During our conversation Julia goes deep into her own personal life which serves as a backdrop for much of her work. “Now the way I would describe fine art is that it comes from the soul. It’s your idea, you want to put it together, and it’s something you want to say to yourself or say to the world—and you want to shoot it for yourself…and only you know the reason why you’re doing it.” [3:33] When Julia was around nine years old she took note of her father, who was a passionate photographer with a great eye. She’d see him come home with rolls of film and develop them in a dark room, develop them, print them—and it fascinated Julia no end. She watched him go through the whole process and knew intrinsically that’s what she wanted to do. [9:52] After moving from being an assistant photographer to a full time commercial photographer, Julia found herself frustrated with the way people wanted her to shoot film—it grated against her own style that was growing. She wanted to make something for herself. So, she started her first project: ‘Teenage Stories’. She photographed teenage girls in a model village so they appeared as giants. Much of this work reflects on stories tied to her youth; pocketing money meant to take the train back from school to instead hitch hike with a friend, for instance, or a girl contorted after falling off her bicycle. Go to www.juliafullerton-batten.com (http://www.juliafullerton-batten.com) to see for yourself. [22:13] “The Act” is a series Julia photographed of women in the UK’s sex industry. She wanted to show women in the sex industry from a different point of view—not the male sided gaze, but rather the perspective of the women themselves. Julia wanted to focus on the positive side of the industry, women who decided this career path for themselves and want to use their body. The women themselves want to show the world what they do through Julia’s photography and that they’re happy. [33:31] Contrary to the reception of “The Act” her series on feral children had phone calls coming in from all corners of the globe, asking for interviews, wanting to know more. The series follows children discarded and alone, either thrown into the jungle, heavily abused, or left without family, having to imitate those around them—namely animals. These were incredibly visceral, difficult images for Julia to wrestle with but the product is absolutely stunning. Of course, a picture holds a thousand words (if not more) so if you’d like to see more of Julia’s work head to: www.juliafullerton-batten.com (http://www.juliafullerton-batten.com) Support this podcast
(Click the photo for more info!) The Buckingham Effect Today in the Lounge, Nick speaks with Skip Sroka and London Walder, who both have a little something in common... Julia Buckingham! When Julia was on the show she mentioned one of her designers who went on to start her own firm. Later that day London messaged us to say she WAS that designer! So we knew we had to get London on the show! Skip is a friend and fellow designer of Julia's who impacted her design career along the way. London is from Wicker Park in Chicago. Her favorite movie is Captain Fantastic. Her favorite childhood memory is from when she was a gymnast. She would travel, stay in hotels, and hang out with her friends before meets and practices. London's favorite retail store to shop in is in anything vintage because the items are unique and not mass produced. "Beer, wine or cocktail, London?" BEER. All things beer, such as IPAs and the experience of going to breweries to try out new and different beers. How London got Started in Interior Design (Click either photo for more of London's work!) London always had a creative mind and she feels like she's been interested in interior design forever. As a young child, she would always redesign spaces in her mind. London attended Illinois State University for Interior and Environmental Design. She started out as a liberal arts student and then later applied to the interior design program. She had one internship her junior year doing price checks and organizing which helped her receive a great technical understanding of interior design. She says that school is so different from the real world. In school, you really learn the technical aspects of design such as using computer programs, learning how to finish a space, learning the safety of the materials, and learning how green materials are. Her very first studio design class was residential and then the rest of her classes focused mainly on commercial design. London enjoyed the fact that school focused on becoming a technical designer so that she could then go on to learn about the business side of interior design later. When London graduated in 2010, there were no design positions available for her. She applied for about 200 jobs and then began working retail at Crate and Barrel. During her time there, London learned from all the designers that came into the store with their clients. She had a friend who knew someone in the lighting store and moved on to a job as a customer service rep for the company. This is where she first started learning more about interior design from a business perspective. London worked her way up to later become Showroom Manager. She says it was an awesome experience which she still applies to her business today. London also worked at a furnishing company and then received her first design job (other than small projects and freelance work) with Julia Buckingham. "The Buckingham Effect" London says that working with Julia was an incredible learning experience. She loves Julia's confidence and how she explains everything to her clients well. London helped to facilitate product development for Julia's line. She also worked as a designer and helped with the office flow. London says it was the perfect first design job. She tells us that Julia runs a tight ship and has high expectations from everyone who works with her. She loves that Julia is the full package for her clients. London worked with Julia for just over a year and also took another lead design position before she felt like she was at a crossroads in her career. The Business Today Today, London is working for herself. She is looking to hire an intern, open up a storefront, and get a team together. She still has a lot of research to do. Right now, London has about 10 clients in progress, a few projects she's finishing up with, and some in the pipelines. She feels like she is in a good place. London does quite a bit of kitchen and baths due to referrals.

#52: Imagine transitioning from making $8.50 per hour and sharing a crammed apartment with 5 people, to becoming a six-figure business owner doing what you love. That's the journey that Julia Kelly, caricature artist and founder of JK Expressions, took. Sounds great, right? Well, as they say, more money = more problems. When Julia earned $25,000 - $30,000 per year, she had fantastic money management skills. She had no debt and plenty of savings. But when her business started making six figures, she began ignoring her finances, stopped saving money .... and racked up thousands in personal credit card debt. Why? Some of us write this off as life getting more expensive as we get older, but it's actually a classic case of lifestyle inflation -- when you make more, you spend more. After Julia began earning six figures, she decided she was no longer happy with $12 haircuts from Supercuts. She happily splurged for $75 salon style cuts instead. She started paying for convenience. One-click Amazon order? Check. Ordering an Uber or Lyft so she didn't have to deal with parking at the airport? Check. Eating out? Check. She became lazy about saving money, assuming that she could always earn more. Money was coming into her bank accounts at an unprecedented pace – so her finances would take care of themselves, right? Wrong. As Julia discovered, when you "upgrade" certain aspects of your life, you may find it difficult to downgrade. You keep spending more and more, trapped on a consumer treadmill. You’re forced to work to fuel your spending addiction. Left unchecked, this saps every ounce of freedom from your life. Ouch. In this episode, you'll learn: · Why you shouldn't take lifestyle inflation lightly · How to stop lifestyle inflation before it happens · What Julia regrets buying … and what she doesn’t · The easiest, most effective antidote to lifestyle inflation · How Julia differentiates between saving time vs. wasteful convenience spending · What Julia's advice is to those who are increasing their income, but don't want to succumb to lifestyle inflation -- Paula Resources Mentioned: • Gretchen Rubin's episode, The Power of Habit Formation • Julia's story on the Afford Anything blog • Cal Newport's episode, The Incredible Value of Deep Work, Instead of Distraction • Julia's site, JKExpressions.com __________________________ I also want to take a moment to thank the sponsors for this episode. When Julia wanted to express the difficulties that others go through to just “get out there”, she decided to make the most basic steps of experiencing the outdoors, getting there, an obstacle to overcome. After thinking on her idea for a year and a half, she decided to start walking from the iconic downton Denver Union Station to the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, almost 70 miles away. Blisters, cars, and even animals were just some of the challenges she faced in the four-day journey. Today Julia is here to tell us about the amazing experience.
