School Without Walls (SWOW) was a fully democratic school that ran from 1974 to 1997, when it was forced to shut down by Kate Carnell's Liberal Party local government. Many of those (including myself) who had the opportunity to learn at SWOW remain embittered that something quite that good - many would say life-changing – no longer exists. There are scant records available from SWOW, and this series of oral histories aims to fill that gap as fully as possible. In this interview, we talk with Clive Mackillop, long time teacher from the latter half of SWOW.
In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Alexandra MacKillop, a former food scientist turned functional medicine doctor, to explore her fascinating journey from the world of nutrition science to a more holistic, whole-body approach to health. Dr. MacKillop shares the pivotal moments that led her to question the practices in the food industry and transition into functional medicine, where she now helps individuals achieve better health through personalized care and lifestyle changes. We discuss the major flaws she saw in food science, including the lack of real health benefits in many processed foods and the influence of corporate funding on research. Dr. MacKillop also explains why certain ingredients in our food offer “zero benefits” and the importance of supporting the body with proper nutrition. We dive into topics like birth control's classification as a carcinogen, how to navigate food additives and artificial ingredients, and how to avoid getting caught up in health trends and fear-mongering. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the gap between traditional nutrition science and functional medicine, and how to make informed health choices without feeling overwhelmed.Key Topics:The transition from food scientist to functional medicine practitionerThe health issues that sparked Dr. MacKillop's career changeThe truth behind “zero benefits” of certain food ingredientsWhat are the ingredients we should avoid as much as possibleBirth control and its classification as a "Class 1 Carcinogen" (and what the best course of action is to take when it comes to BC)The difference between holistic practitioners and traditional food scientistsTips on avoiding harmful ingredients and balancing your diet without the overwhelm of health trendsFind info on Dr. MacKillop and her resources HERE

Welcome back to the On Adventure Podcast! I'm your host, Josh Self, and today I had the pleasure of speaking with Scott MacKillop, a seasoned financial professional and avid outdoorsman. Despite our shared background in finance, our conversation veered away from the boardroom and delved into the thrilling world of outdoor adventures. From climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to the peaks of Colorado, Scott's adventures have given him a profound sense of being fully alive, experiencing all emotions and embracing the challenges that come with pushing oneself to the edge. It's an aspirational goal, but you have to accept the fact that there's only 24 hours in a day. And if you're like me, there's way too many things that you'd like to do and so you're never going to be able to fit it all in. So you have to try to screen out as many things as possible to really just focus on your priorities and not let yourself get distracted. Embrace the fact that you're not going to get everything right. You're going to have days when you go, Oh, I spent too much time doing work and not enough time doing things with my family. And there'll be other times when you see it the other way. So just don't stress about that. Do your best to stay focused. And you have to think about it, because it's not going to happen by itself. There's nobody that's going to tell you when it's time to go do your fun things and stop working. So you have to be very intentional about it. I think the key is just recognizing that it's hard to get that exactly right. But I have found, interestingly, that time seems a little bit expandable to me. So if I have relatively few things to do, I'm going to fill up the day. If I have more things to do, somehow or another, I can still get those in." On Guitar Lessons "I also play guitar. I play in a band. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area back in the sixties. And so there were were a lot of pretty cool musical influence...

Our guest this week is Linda MacKillop (The Forgotten Life of Eva Gordon, Kregel Publications May 2022). Linda took a rough draft she'd worked on for years into her new MFA program and emerged with a polished manuscript, including a central character often likened to Olive Ketteridge. We discuss what it's like when your protagonist is both difficult and suffering from memory loss, (which of course makes her unreliable) and how switching from first person to third person close made that task more manageable. She also shares marketing tips about interfacing with local community resources and how she didn't avoid, but embraced using her faith to enrich the story's themes. Linda MacKillop writes fiction for both adults and young people, and creative nonfiction. Her articles and essays have appeared in books, magazines, and literary journals such as Under the Sun and Relief Journal. The Forgotten Life of Eva Gordon is her first novel. Hotel Oscar Mike Echo, her middle-grade novel, releases in June 2023. She earned her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at the Rainier Writing Workshop in Tacoma, Washington. As the mother of four adult sons, she and her husband live in an empty nest outside of Chicago. To learn more about Linda, click here.
The state member of parliament for Mackillop representing the South East of South Australia joins us on FlowFM to discuss recent fires in the Lucindale area, the upcoming South East Field Days, the dire need for housing supply particularly in Bordertown in the upper south east and at Robe on the Limestone Coast, and we reflect on a new parliamentary inquiry into duck hunting and what that could spell for the south east recreation drawcard.
In a complex science-for-policy ecosystem, what role is filled by the so-called 'knowledge-brokering organisation'? It's not a scientific organisation, nor a science advisor, nor a think-tank, nor a policymaker. Yet these organisations abound and they can be highly influential — as Professor James Downe and Dr Eleanor MacKillop argue. In this episode, these two experts on this under-appreciated corner of the policymaking world explain to Toby Wardman the roles, challenges and strategies that characterise the work of knowledge-brokering organisations around the world.

You don't reach the summit of 14,000 foot mountains more than 150 times without learning a few things along the way about life, health, and adventure. In today's adventure episode, I talk to financial pros Skip Schweiss and Scott MacKillop. Between them, they've climbed mountains all over the world and lived a life of adventure while building thriving careers as executives in financial services. I've had the pleasure of joining them on several trips and can attest to their skill and wisdom, but more importantly, to their sense of team and community. They'll be the first people on the mountain to help someone in distress and they pack “extras” just in case someone besides themselves needs help (and I know because I was on the receiving end of their help!).
So good to have your company again, for our final cardiology-themed episode (for the time being at least). Today I'm thrilled to say that we're joined by the brilliant Dr Lucy MacKillop to discuss cardiac issues in pregnancy. It's perhaps not a topic that leaps to mind when you consider cardiology topics to revise, but it's an area that we really do need to have a solid understanding of, as well as being a fascinating area of medicine.Dr MacKillop is a consultant obstetric physician in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who trained in Oxford, London and Sydney before taking up her consultant post in 2008. She is a widely published author of academic material, book chapters and educational resources, and is the perfect person to help us gain a better grasp on the most concerning cardiac issues that women might experience in pregnancy, and how we should manage these when we see them. We've loved hearing feedback from lots of you who have been tuning in to these episodes week by week. Please keep sharing the podcast with your friends, family and colleagues! And if you'd like to say hi, you can find us on Twitter @medregnews, or by dropping us an email at medregnews@gmail.com. Hope you're enjoying life on the wards as much as ever, and we can't wait to chat with you again same time next week!
She was raised in an impoverished and dysfunctional family. She was excommunicated by a misled bishop. She is the only canonized Australian saint. Who is she? Find out more on "Heroes of the Faith", where we are inspired by the lives of the saints, so that we can become saints ourselves!
