If you've ever wondered if it's possible to monetize your content with a smaller audience while still working full-time, you'll want to listen to this week's Beyond Influential. Julia Lynch (aka @smarterinasec) is a content creator and lifelong nerd who has always been passionate about learning something new every day. In early 2020, she began sharing content on Instagram & TikTok about her favorite daily reads & podcast picks, as well as tips to succeed at work inspired by her time in business school and her day job as a strategy consultant. Since then, she has built an engaged following using her two platforms and has been side hustling as a social media consultant and a micro influencer for a variety of brands. I particularly thought it was important to do this interview because it's very common for people to think everyone online is making their living by creating social content, when that's not the case at all. This episode is a look behind the scenes of an up-and-coming influencer who is still in the process of transitioning away from her 9 to 5 but is already working with brands and making a name for herself. On Ep. 160, we cover: How content creation has become Julia's side hustle and the gateway to other opportunities while still working in a “traditional” business role How business school has helped her as a content creator Why she created Smarter in a Sec and the gap in the market she wanted to fill Content creation: How Julia plans her content, her posting frequency on different platforms, and how she balances it with a full-time job The difference between her audience on Instagram vs. TikTok Brand deal & monetization transparency: how much she makes from brand deals & her biggest brand deal to date How she's been finding success with a small audience as a micro influencer, how she strategically builds her network, and more! Today’s show focuses on highly sensitive people. My guest loves helping HSPs uncover the layers of conditioning put on them by society and bloom in their uniqueness. Join us to learn more. Julia R. Wild is a bestselling author, spiritual teacher, and trauma educator with a Master’s degree in psychology. She’s also a writing, creativity, and life coach. Her first self-help book for sensitives became an Amazon #1 bestseller, and she’s a TEDxMileHigh Blogger. Julia loves helping highly sensitive and empath children and women find their soulful, powerful voice. Part of her work also helps parents of highly sensitive children better relate to their kids. Julia enjoys disrupting conformity and subverting the dominant paradigms so people can express their unique, sovereign creativity and live extraordinary lives. She is a big believer in writing for healing and embracing the shadow as much as the light. She has two projects slated for publication soon, including her Master’s thesis on autism from a spiritual perspective. Show Highlights: Why is Julia intensely passionate about her creativity, being an “old soul,” helping people find their voice, social justice, equality, and animals How Julia grew up in a household with extreme abuse and dysfunction in Manhattan but attended an all-girls private school How Julia’s personal brand of intensity involves being direct and blunt with a heightened sensory perception of sounds and smells Growing up, Julia’s intensity made everything more pressurized and challenging because of her toxic home and stuffy school How Julia’s cultural factors involved growing up in the rich environment of NYC, which gave her perspective and helped her be open-minded Why Julia has to water down what she says and writes How her intensity gets out of control with things she finds too stimulating How Julia uses her fire for good to help sensitives set boundaries and self-advocate Julia’s Master’s thesis, which gives a new, more balanced perspective to autism How Julia harnesses the power of her intensity with self-care, valuing her capacity for depth, and using her intensity in service to others Personal habits that help Julia are writing, channeling energy, and finding an appropriate use of humor The best advice Julia ever received: From Maya Angelou: “When someone shows you who they are, pay attention the first time.” From the Buddha: “Don’t believe anything because you heard it. Find out for yourself.” “You’ve gotta risk it to get the biscuit.” Books that Julia recommends: Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, Citizen by Claudia Rankine, and The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron How Julia helps others use their fire by “unconditioning” people and undoing the layers of conditioning that have been put on them by society Parting words from Julia: “Honor your sensitivity. If you’re weird or different, stay weird or different. It’s healing to tell your story, so value it.” Resources: Find Julia and her work: Julia Rose Wild

Are you carrying the wounds of your parents? As children, many of our parents dumped their wounds, baggage, fears, and insecurities onto us, and many of us believe we need to continue to carry this baggage for the rest of our lives. It has turned into an outlined curriculum or pattern that we continue to follow, yet we place blame, hold grudges, and never take responsibility. Their baggage may have been passed onto us, but is our responsibility to work through it and turn it into our greatest gifts. But in order to do so, we need to first understand the baggage we are carrying, look at it through the eyes of compassion, and release the blame we are holding onto. So how do we end this loop of ancestral karmic wounding and finally take ownership of how our lives unfold? We need to find enough compassion within ourselves to forgive our parents. And in this episode of the Deep Dive, I chat with singer/songwriter Julie Price on her experience working through the wounds she carried from her parents, how she was able to understand the "why" hidden within the wounds, and how she set herself free through forgiveness. Julia is a Good Morning America featured songwriter who was featured in the NY Times as a “booming creative.” She built a personal online presence and community with over 470,000 followers across multiple platforms, including Vine. With a unique skill-set that expands beyond music, she also tours as an international speaker, hosts corporate heart-centered workshops, and consults high-level executives with an emphasis on female-founders, while also specializing in community building, managing campaigns, producing events and panels for start-ups to Fortune 500 Companies. Julia continues to create content for her own brand as well, as a published writer, influencer, and songwriter. Her purpose is to help others find and stand in their authentic voice in every situation they encounter. Episode 018 / Romantic comedy author Julia Kent joined us this week to discuss the value of meeting the emotional needs of readers, plus nuts-and-bolts details on writing ahead, audiobooks, and translations. Sara’s doing the essential (yet boring) task of updating back matter and book descriptions to prep for an upcoming sale. She’s also found a new mystery TV show, The Mallorca Files, which has a Castle and Beckett-type male/female detective pairing mixed with the tropical vibe of Death in Paradise or Burn Notice. Jami sent her book to the editor and has a release date. She also cut four chapters (!) for pacing. She’s in “launch-mode” as she gets ready for the release. You can get Jami’s launch plan here. Jami and Sara recorded a video workshop of what they wish they’d known for the Stay Home Story Summit, which is free and there’s no up-sale. Just great info on craft and promotion. Videos start May 18. Registration closes May 25, 2020. You can find show notes and links at wishidknownforwriters.com. We’re conditioned to respect the medical community and follow our doctor’s advice. But when Julia Crozier was prescribed a drug that didn’t address the cause of her inflammation (and only offered a 0.1% improvement in masking her symptoms), she knew there had to be a better way. Julia did her own research and healed from the inside out, leveraging an understanding of nutrition to transform her gut health. Julia has a master’s degree in molecular biology with a concentration in stem cell research from Oakland University, and she is working toward a Holistic Nutrition Consultant certification. She also serves as a Research Assistant at Karmanos Cancer Institute where she is involved in ovarian cancer research. In light of her own experience, Julia is committed to helping others improve their gut health to achieve optimal performance. On this episode of Destined to Be, Julia joins us to share her struggle with bloating, acne and inflammation, discussing what inspired her to look for answers beyond what the doctors told her. She walks us through the process of using an elimination diet to identify food sensitivities and transform your gut health, explaining how the human body was designed to eat mostly greens—despite what we’ve been conditioned to believe! Today, your host Ellen Gardner, Communications and Marketing at HIROC, speaks with Julia Hanigsberg, President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital There are many reasons that Julia Hanigsberg was drawn to a position in healthcare and she admits most of them have to do with family. Throughout her daughter’s life (born at just 29 weeks and now at 22), Julia and her family have been accessing many healthcare services that her daughter needed to be successful. Her admiration for the skill and resilience that healthcare providers bring to their jobs has grown since she joined Holland Bloorview, and today, as CEO, one of her key priorities is to break down barriers that get in their way and ensure that workers are supported and cared for. The stigma around youth and children with disabilities still exists, but under Julia’s leadership the hospital has taken a deliberate approach to reducing stigma that has made leading and modelling social change a part of their corporate strategy – the most visible element being a transformative anti-stigma campaign called Dear Everybody. Key Takeaways: [1:28] Why her own lack of self-confidence in science and math led Julia to become very passionate about STEM education for all young people [5:13] The key leadership quality that Julia values in others and epitomizes herself [8:24] How having the personal experience of accessing healthcare services has helped Julia in her role at Holland Bloorview [13:10] How Julia and her leadership team are enabling a culture of innovation and collaboration [16:21] The exercise of developing a risk appetite statement and moving the hospital’s level of risk tolerance to moderate, especially as it relates to taking on more complex patients and expansion of research [20:06] Why all patients should have the right to research in the areas of their healthcare [22:17] How scientists, researchers and engineers at Holland Bloorview are developing solutions that enable families and youth to have better functional lives [25:00] The hospital’s approach to stigma around disability has not been one of judgment but of education and understanding [25:35] How the Dear Everybody campaign has given children and youth the opportunity to tell the world what they wished everyone knew about them and not to define them by their disability [29:06] How Holland Bloorview helps children develop their own self-advocacy [32:50] A difficult moment in Julia’s career [34:54] Julia’s priorities as leader [37:54] Why observing the people who work in healthcare gives Julia confidence in our healthcare system and what we can accomplish collectively [38:50] How social media has connected Julia to students, to colleagues in healthcare, to research, to patients, and expanded her circle Mentioned in this Episode: Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Ryerson University STEM Education Dear Everybody – Campaign to end disability stigma Listen to more interviews with Healthcare Leaders at HIROC.com Follow us on Twitter, and listen on iTunes and Google Play Music. This week on MIA Radio we interview Dr Julia Rucklidge. Dr Rucklidge is professor of clinical psychology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and she leads the Mental Health and Nutrition Research Group. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Julia completed her PhD at the University of Calgary followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. In the last decade, she and her lab have been running clinical trials investigating the role of broad-spectrum micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety and stress. Julia has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, has been frequently featured in the media and has given invited talks all over the world on her work on nutrition and mental health. We discuss: What led Julia to her interest in nutrition and how it may have a role in responding to mental disorders, particularly Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Why using the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals may not be the best approach when responding to psychological difficulties. How Julia went about setting up a Randomised Controlled Trial to investigate the effect of micronutrients and minerals on behavioral problems. That the most consistent finding of the study is that the individuals taking micronutrients improved more in their general functioning and impairment when compared to those just taking a placebo. That it’s hard to move away from the conception of mental illness as a chemical imbalance in the brain, partly because of the vested interest in keeping it alive. That there is no opportunity to patent nutrient therapies, so there is little incentive for research and limited commercial interests. Why a single nutrient response might not be the best approach for someone who wanted to use nutrition to improve their mental health and wellbeing. How a dietary deficiency of Niacin during the 1930s led to a condition called Pellagra which often manifested as psychotic symptoms. What led to the flagging of a 2014 TEDx talk Julia gave entitled “The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health”. How Julia felt about her talk being flagged by TED. How many historical medical advances, now accepted as the standard of care, at the time flew in the face of conventional scientific thinking. How difficult it has been to communicate with TED about the flagging of the talk. How Julia hears from many people who get in touch to share that they are struggling with psychiatric medications and instead want to look to nutritional solutions. That the best advice is often simple, eat more fruits and vegetables and reduce the amount of processed food. In today’s episode, I’ll talk to two financial planners who merged their individual businesses to create a new practice together. Julia Chung is a partner and senior financial planner at Spring Financial Planning. Julia has been working in financial services since 1997. In 2011, she left traditional financial services to form a fee-for-service financial planning firm in partnership with an accounting firm. She made JYC Financial entirely independent a few years later, eventually merging with Spring Personal Finance to become Spring Financial Planning. Julia is also co-founder of Admin Slayer Services and a charter member of Lead Family Enterprise Advisors. She has co-authored several e-books, including “Women & Money,” “Art of Delegation,” and “The Entrepreneur’s Survival Guide.” Sandi Martin is a partner and financial planner at Spring Financial Planning. After joining the industry, Sandi quickly realized that she could either help clients or get good performance reviews… but not both. Sandi founded Spring Personal Finance, an independent, advice-only financial planning practice, to help ordinary Canadians make the best financial choices with the best information possible. Sandi built a virtual practice so she could serve clients from across the country, and five years later Spring Personal Finance merged with JYC Financial to become Spring Financial Planning. Sandi is the co-host of the Because Money podcast and co-founder of Autoinvest (now sold), which helps investors compare the services of Canadian robo-advisors. She also co-authored the ebook “Women & Money.” Topics Discussed in This Episode: Spring Financial Planning: what they do and who they serve Why fee-for-service planning is important The building blocks of the process at Spring Financial Planning How clients find Julia and Sandi’s services The approach Julia and Sandi took to merge their practices How Julia and Sandi integrate working with other professionals The pros and cons of working with robo-advisors How the financial advice market is changing in Canada The technology, tools, and software that Julia and Sandi use in their practice The features that Julia and Sandi want in financial planning software The Spring Financial Planning Forum and how Julia and Sandi are using it to help financial planners who

On the show this week, I’m delighted to be joined by Julia Samuel. She is a British psychotherapist who specializes in grief and bereavement, and founded the UK Child Bereavement charity, that works with children who are grieving, as well as those who are grieving the loss of a child. She is the author of Grief Works: Stories of Life, Death, and Surviving. Julia is a truly delightful person and I really enjoyed getting to speak with her. At first blush, grief may seem to be a strange topic to be covered on a show about joy, but, I see the two emotions as beautiful bookends to each other. Both states are vulnerable in their own ways, both grief and joy are deeply personal things, and each of us experiences them in our own ways. What I love so much about Julia Samuel’s book is that she honors and understands that the journey of grieving is different for each person, and that it’s different based on who you have lost in your life. She chose to divide the book up into sections based on the person’s relationship to the deceased. Julia explains in the interview that she chose to do this because grief is different for each person, and because she wanted the book to be a companion for people who are grieving. She made it easy to pick up, easy to read a bit at a time, easy to see yourself in one of the people she shares about. She also includes the explanations, from a clinical perspective, of what is happening in the bereavement described - the patterns, what to expect, how you might feel. It’s a book crafted for people when they are experiencing something that makes them feel separate, disconnected, alone, and isolated, and gives them support and insights during a difficult time. Julia and I talk about: Her first love of swinging on her garden swing as a child Starting Child Bereavement UK, and her work as a patron Her early influences, including the bereavement of her parents Her love of personal connection, and how that led her from a role in publishing to becoming a grief and bereavement counselor The roots and starting point for her book, Grief Works: Stories of Life, Death, and Surviving Why people shut down and isolate when they grieve, and why they judge themselves on a right or wrong way of grieving Why allowing yourself to feel the emotions of grief is important How to feel the emotions of grief and loss without being overcome by it The impacts of losing important figures like Princess Diana to society, and why so many people are deeply stirred by these tragic losses How a country processes the loss of children in tragedies like school shootings, as it raises the questions of “the existential cruelty of life” How Julia reacts to resistance, by continuing on her path How to jump start your joy: by enjoying her grandchildren’s giggles, getting in touch with nature, and watching romantic comedies and The Amazing Miss Maizel Resources Julia Samuel’s Website Julia Samuel’s book, Grief Works: Stories of Life, Death, and Surviving on Amazon If you are grieving: Julia’s 8 pillars of strength (a free download) On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss by Elizabeth Kubla-Ross Waking the Tiger, by Peter Levine (a book on healing trauma) The Marvelous Mrs Maisel on Amazon Prime

Today’s guest is a writer, content marketer, passionate wordsmith, and a Canadian who now calls Australia home. Julia Carter is currently undertaking her doctorate studies in creative writing with a focus on screenwriting for serial television. Do you ever get nostalgic about the way TV used to be? I grew up with the sitcoms and soap operas from the 80’s and 90’s where we'd settle down at a specific time, on a specific day, on a specific channel to watch our favourite TV show with the rest of the family around us. However, thanks to the changing face of media consumption, the internet and the advent of streaming TV services times certainly have changed… and as we all have noticed, so too has the TV programming. The stories being told and the way they need to be told has also needed to change and as we’ll uncover in today’s episode there are some screen writers doing this better than others, and we’ve still a long way to go. Hacker Practice: GROWTH, SYSTEMS, and RISK for Startups and SMB
Do you know somebody who loves to argue? I'm one of those people. So is Julia Kelly. We're great together. Julia is the most renowned caricature artist west of the Mississippi. She built her business from scratch and is currently starting business #2. I guess I caught her at a good time. When I asked her to do an interview with me. She made an interesting request: "Let's wing it!" She's been on some pretty awesome podcasts including: Entrepreneur on Fire, Double your Freelancing, and Afford Anything. She says: the less scripted the show, the more fun the interview. My old college buddies would agree: Justus loves "doing it live". So I agreed to do the episode with ZERO PREPARATION. Typically I prepare for interviews with rigorous research and outline a list of topics to talk about. In this case I did no such thing. Shoot, I didn't even take notes until after we recorded the conversation. The result was a fascinating conversations that covers art, business and everything in between. #52: Imagine transitioning from making $8.50 per hour and sharing a crammed apartment with 5 people, to becoming a six-figure business owner doing what you love. That's the journey that Julia Kelly, caricature artist and founder of JK Expressions, took. Sounds great, right? Well, as they say, more money = more problems. When Julia earned $25,000 - $30,000 per year, she had fantastic money management skills. She had no debt and plenty of savings. But when her business started making six figures, she began ignoring her finances, stopped saving money .... and racked up thousands in personal credit card debt. Why? Some of us write this off as life getting more expensive as we get older, but it's actually a classic case of lifestyle inflation -- when you make more, you spend more. After Julia began earning six figures, she decided she was no longer happy with $12 haircuts from Supercuts. She happily splurged for $75 salon style cuts instead. She started paying for convenience. One-click Amazon order? Check. Ordering an Uber or Lyft so she didn't have to deal with parking at the airport? Check. Eating out? Check. She became lazy about saving money, assuming that she could always earn more. Money was coming into her bank accounts at an unprecedented pace – so her finances would take care of themselves, right? Wrong. As Julia discovered, when you "upgrade" certain aspects of your life, you may find it difficult to downgrade. You keep spending more and more, trapped on a consumer treadmill. You’re forced to work to fuel your spending addiction. Left unchecked, this saps every ounce of freedom from your life. Ouch. In this episode, you'll learn: · Why you shouldn't take lifestyle inflation lightly · How to stop lifestyle inflation before it happens · What Julia regrets buying … and what she doesn’t · The easiest, most effective antidote to lifestyle inflation · How Julia differentiates between saving time vs. wasteful convenience spending · What Julia's advice is to those who are increasing their income, but don't want to succumb to lifestyle inflation -- Paula Resources Mentioned: • Gretchen Rubin's episode, The Power of Habit Formation • Julia's story on the Afford Anything blog • Cal Newport's episode, The Incredible Value of Deep Work, Instead of Distraction • Julia's site, JKExpressions.com __________________________ I also want to take a moment to thank the sponsors for this episode.
