It's easy to get busy and distracted by doing a bunch of good things, but none of it can take away from the importance of being still and sitting with Jesus. Our relationship with Him is grown when we spend time with Him and it is out of that relationship that we should serve, not the other way around.
Distraction Has Become The Silent Killer Of People's Lives
The Name Above Every Name Conference Four Becoming Prayer When the Name Becomes Our Life “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20 Over these past conferences we have spoken of receiving the holy Name, guarding the heart, and learning to stand before God with a broken spirit. All of these are necessary. Yet none of them is the destination. The Jesus Prayer is not an achievement. It is not even the highest form of prayer. It is a road. It leads somewhere. Or rather, it leads to Someone. Its purpose is not that we should become occupied with prayer. Its purpose is that we should become occupied with Christ. Everything else is secondary. ⸻⸻⸻ When the Fathers speak of unceasing prayer, they do not imagine a person anxiously repeating words every moment of the day. Such an understanding would quickly become exhausting. Rather, they speak of a heart that has learned never to depart from Christ. The words remain precious. They accompany us throughout our life. Yet gradually the relationship they express becomes more important than the words themselves. The prayer begins on our lips. It descends into the mind. It finds rest in the heart. Finally, it becomes the atmosphere in which we live. Not because we are continually conscious of it. But because Christ has quietly become the center of everything. ⸻⸻⸻ This is why Archimandrite Zacharias insists that the measure of prayer is not extraordinary experiences. The measure is love. Has the heart become more patient? More forgiving? More merciful? More truthful? More humble? If not, then no matter how many prayers have been recited, the purpose has been missed. The true miracle of the Jesus Prayer is not mystical phenomena. It is the slow transformation of a human being into the likeness of Christ. ⸻⸻⸻ 2 There is a temptation that comes even in the spiritual life. We begin to love prayer more than we love God. We become attached to certain feelings. Certain consolations. Certain moments of peace. When they disappear, we imagine we have lost everything. The Fathers quietly remind us that God sometimes removes sensible consolation so that we may seek Him alone. The Bride must learn to love the Bridegroom more than His gifts. Only then does love become pure. ⸻⸻⸻ One of the most beautiful teachings of St. Silouan, so often repeated by Elder Sophrony and Archimandrite Zacharias, is that the heart gradually becomes capable of embracing the whole Adam. At first we pray for ourselves. Then for those closest to us. Then for those we love. Eventually, grace begins to enlarge the heart. We discover ourselves praying for strangers. For enemies. For those who have forgotten God. For those who have wounded us. For those who have never known love. 3 The circle widens until there are no longer any outsiders. This is not something we accomplish. It is something Christ accomplishes within us. His own love begins to beat within the human heart. ⸻⸻⸻ The Jesus Prayer therefore has a profoundly priestly character. Every baptized Christian is called to stand before God on behalf of the world. We bring before Him those who cannot pray. Those who no longer believe. Those crushed by despair. Those trapped in addiction. Those overwhelmed by grief. Those who have forgotten even their own dignity. We carry them quietly within our hearts. Not because we are strong enough. But because Christ carries them within His. Prayer becomes participation in His own intercession before the Father. ⸻⸻⸻ There is another fruit that often goes unnoticed. The heart becomes grateful. Not merely thankful when life is pleasant. 4 Grateful always. The one who continually invokes the Name slowly discovers that every breath is gift. Every sunrise. Every meal. Every encounter. Every sorrow. Even suffering becomes a place where Christ may be found. Thanksgiving begins to permeate ordinary life. The Eucharist extends into every hour of the day. ⸻⸻⸻ The Fathers speak often of stillness. Many misunderstand this word. Stillness is not merely external silence. Nor is it freedom from activity. Stillness is the quiet confidence that Christ is present. A person may live in a monastery or in a crowded city. He may spend his days alone or surrounded by people. Stillness is possible wherever the heart has learned to remain with Christ. The Jesus Prayer becomes the guardian of this hidden peace. ⸻⸻⸻ As years pass, the prayer itself often becomes simpler. Sometimes the full prayer is spoken. 5 Sometimes only the holy Name. Sometimes no words at all. Only the silent awareness of His presence. The Fathers do not prescribe these movements. Grace teaches each soul according to its need. The important thing is never to abandon humility. The closer we draw to Christ, the more clearly we perceive that everything is gift. Nothing has been earned. Everything has been received. ⸻⸻⸻ Perhaps this explains why the greatest saints seem so ordinary. They do not appear remarkable. They seldom speak about themselves. They rarely attract attention. Having forgotten themselves, they have become transparent to Christ. People leave their presence remembering Him rather than them. This is the hidden victory of the Jesus Prayer. Not that we become known as holy. But that Christ alone becomes visible. ⸻⸻⸻ When we first began this retreat, we asked a simple question. 6 Why this Name? Now perhaps we may answer it. Because within this Name dwells the whole mystery of our salvation. The humility of Bethlehem. The obedience of Nazareth. The compassion shown to sinners. The tears shed over Jerusalem. The Cross. The silence of Holy Saturday. The glory of the Resurrection. The fire of Pentecost. Everything is contained within the Person whose Name we invoke. Each time we whisper, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me,” we stand before the whole mystery of the Gospel. Nothing essential is absent. ⸻⸻⸻ Soon this retreat will end. We shall return to our homes. To our families. To our work. To our responsibilities. 7 The hidden battle will continue. Distractions will return. Weakness will remain. But now the holy Name goes with us. It accompanies every step. It enters every conversation. It sanctifies every sorrow. It illumines every joy. Little by little, almost unnoticed, Christ Himself begins to gather the scattered fragments of our lives into a single offering to the Father. This is the true work of the Jesus Prayer. Not escape from the world. But the transfiguration of the heart within the world. ⸻⸻⸻ Let us therefore ask for no extraordinary gifts. Let us ask only for faithfulness. May the Name of Jesus remain upon our lips in times of joy and in times of grief. May it guard us in temptation. Strengthen us in weakness. Console us in loneliness. Humble us in success. Sustain us in suffering. 8 And at the hour of our death, when every earthly support has fallen away, may the holy Name still be found within our hearts—not as a formula we have mastered, but as the living presence of the Friend who has walked beside us all our lives. For in the end, the greatest fruit of the Jesus Prayer is not that we have learned to repeat the Name of Christ. It is that, through His infinite mercy, the Name of Christ has slowly written itself upon our hearts. And when that has happened, prayer has become life, and life itself has become an unending hymn of love to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. Amen. 9
I want to tell you about the time I showed up to speak at a men's state prison with a swollen face the day after a multi-car pile-up, and how that accident gave me the exact message I needed. This episode is built around one truth: you will always find what you are genuinely looking for. The problem is most people think they want a goal but are really searching for the excuse that lets them off the hook. I break down how to build a crystal-clear, high-definition vision of your future so your mind can lock onto the target and filter out the distractions that multiply the closer you get to something worth having. Key Takeaways Your mind moves toward whatever you are genuinely focused on, so be honest about what you are actually searching for. A stated goal means nothing if your internal search is really for reasons it will not work. Distractions and temptations increase the closer you get to anything truly worthwhile. A crystal-clear, high-definition vision helps you recognize when a new opportunity is actually a detour. Surrounding yourself with people who climb mountains with you, not complain about them, is non-negotiable. Action Steps Write down exactly what you are looking for in each area of your life: relationships, career, and personal growth. Be specific enough that you can measure whether a new opportunity fits inside that picture. The next time an opportunity appears, ask yourself one question: was this in the picture I painted when I started this journey? If not, treat it as a distraction until proven otherwise. Put blinders on one specific goal this week by removing one recurring distraction, whether a person, a habit, or a time-wasting activity, that is pulling your focus away from your finish line. Notable Quote You told yourself you had a goal, but really what you were looking for was the excuse.
S1:E7 Distractions by City of Life Church
Hosts Don Jeffries and Tony Arterburn tackle the week's biggest controversies — a mass migrant surge into Spain, elite-driven demographic shifts, and the political theater around Fauci's pardon and pandemic hearings. They trace how COVID-era decisions, election disputes, and foreign policy distractions have eroded public trust, strained the economy, and reshaped American civic life.
The world is full of distractions that promise to make our life better in some way. The problem with distractions is that they only satisfy for a short time. And the Bible gives us a much different picture of a blessed life. Psalms 1:1-6 describes the blessed man as one who keeps the right perspective and practice.
Are you so busy worrying about today's problems that you're missing what God is doing right in front of you?In Mark 8:14-30, the disciples sit in the same boat with Jesus, the One who had just fed thousands with only a few loaves, yet all they can think about is lunch. While Christ warns them about eternal danger, they are consumed with temporary needs. This passage exposes one of Satan's greatest strategies: not convincing people to hate Jesus, but keeping them distracted from Him.In this expository Bible sermon through the Gospel of Mark, we examine Jesus' warning to "Beware of the leaven" and discover how spiritual blindness develops, how false teaching quietly spreads, and how God progressively opens the eyes of His people to see Christ more clearly. In This Message You'll Discover:Why earthly distractions can dull your spiritual visionWhat Jesus meant by "the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod"The three dangerous leavens every Christian must recognize:Religious hypocrisyUnbelief and false teachingPolitical idolatry and worldly compromiseWhy Jesus healed the blind man in two stagesHow the disciples moved from confusion to confessing Jesus as the ChristWhat it means to grow in spiritual discernmentThe future hope of seeing Christ face to faceThis message reminds us that believers often grow in understanding gradually. Like the blind man in Mark 8, we may first see only dimly, but God continues opening our eyes until the day we see Jesus perfectly.Key Bible Passages• Mark 8:14-30• Matthew 16:1-17• Luke 12:1• 1 Corinthians 5:6-8• Galatians 5:7-9• Isaiah 29:13• John 18:36• Philippians 3:20-21• 1 Corinthians 13:12• 1 John 3:2• Revelation 22:4If this sermon encouraged you, please:

Daily Boost Podcast Distraction Can Be Good July 31, 2026 | Episode 5510 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description I've been massively distracted for two weeks — and I saw it coming. I'm heading to Death Valley to help my buddy Croix cross Badwater, and the prep has swallowed everything. My book, my routine, my focus. All of it. But distraction isn't always the enemy. Sometimes it hands you better ideas, gives your brain room to work, and shows you what actually matters. The trick is knowing when distraction is working for you — and when it's stealing the one thing you're supposed to do first. Press play and I'll show you the difference. Featured Story For two weeks, my book sat untouched. My wife reminded me — teasing, but fair. I'd been buried in prepping Croy's Badwater crossing through Death Valley: hours a day, seven days a week, handling logistics and rigging cameras. Then my camera died right on my desk after five years. An hour later, I walked out of Best Buy with a mortgage payment's worth of replacement. What I didn't expect: while I wasn't writing, the book got better. I tested its ideas on coaching calls and watched people respond. Whole sections got demoted or cut. New ones showed up. All because I stepped away and let my brain keep working in the background. Important Points Somebody somewhere is working around the clock to take what you're building, so keep growing or watch it slip away. Doing nothing is still an action with real consequences, so make your choices carefully and stay in positive control. Marketing isn't the piece you plug in at the end. In business and in your career, it's where you're supposed to start. Memorable Quotes It doesn't matter if the glass is half empty or half full. All that matters is you are the one pouring the water. When you do nothing, you're actually taking action. There are ramifications for what you do when you do nothing. Every no gets me closer to yes. No's are part of your story, and if you keep working hard, they lead to many yeses. Scott's Three-Step Approach Name the one thing you're supposed to do first — the marketing, the lead flow, the work everything else depends on. Then protect it before the distraction arrives, because the distraction is coming whether you plan for it or not. Now use the break on purpose, letting your brain work in the background and capturing the better ideas it brings back. Chapters 0:02 - Happy fabulous Friday and a week of distraction 0:34 - Prepping Croix 55-hour Badwater crossing 1:18 - Mark Cuban on who's coming for what you built 2:52 - Dreamers, doers, and the people in between 6:50 - My camera dies at the worst possible time 8:43 - Two weeks of not writing made the book better 10:08 - Marketing first, in your business and career Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: https://instagram.com/heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://dailyboostpodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices. Deadly Distractions and Our Choices by Fr. Kris Schmidt
From the life of Jesus, we are able to learn how Satan seeks to divert all of us from our God-spoken identities and assignments in the Kingdom. In subtlety, the enemy is constantly seeking to redirect our minds and wills towards lesser investments of who we are in the Kingdom. Harnessing the world system and the different streams of influence from our culture, Satan and his demons are committed to the art of temptation, diversion, and distraction. If they can succeed in disconnecting and diverting us from our true identities as sons and daughters, then they are able to redirect our eternal focus unto a temporary focus. When they are successful at these diversions, Christians no longer live FOR the Kingdom of God even though they are living IN the Kingdom of God. The raw truth is that the enemy succeeds in this tactic of diversion in the lives of innumerable believers. We are able to learn how to consistently overcome Satan's strategies by learning from Jesus himself as Satan sought to divert Jesus from the assignment He received from the Father.

Purity of heart refers not only to God having cleansed our hearts. It's about having a heart with a singular focus, one that is wholly devoted to God and His will. But how? How can we have that focus when life is filled with seemingly endless distractions? Between streaming services, socials, and so much in life clamoring for our attention, how do we maintain hearts that have the right priorities?Today we explore the answers to those questions, as we turn to Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."(RAR2026EP31)

Here’s my prayer for you today: May you be led by what is in you, not by what is around you. Because what is around you is loud. Distractions. Drama. Disappointment. Fear. Bad news. Negative people. The invitation to live a small, defeated, mediocre life is everywhere. But daughter of God, you were never created to live looking down. Downcast. Downtrodden. Down in the dumps. Down is not your direction. And here’s how I know: Because of what is in you. Romans 8:9 says, “You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.” Then just a few verses later, Romans 8:15 says, “You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.” Did you catch that? God’s Spirit lives in you. Not beside you. Not near you. Not occasionally visiting you. In you. The mountain-moving, sea-parting, chain-breaking, prison-shaking, death-defeating power of Almighty God lives in you. Let that sink in. Because the enemy works overtime trying to make you forget it. He wants your attention on your failures instead of your Father. He wants your focus on your flaws instead of God’s power. He wants you obsessing over your weight, your money, your job, your house, your image, your circumstances—anything that keeps your eyes off the greatest reality of your life: The Spirit of God lives within you. If you’re consumed by what you see in the mirror, you’ll forget what Jesus placed inside of you. If you’re focused on your problems, you’ll forget you already have access to the power to overcome them. If you’re drowning in negative thoughts, you’ll start believing you’re stuck. But you’re not stuck. You’ve just forgotten what’s in you. The Spirit of God has already given you power to rise. Power to heal. Power to overcome. Power to keep going. Don’t sacrifice your power by entertaining pitiful. I know I’ve done it. I’ve had seasons where I focused more on my problems than my power. More on my circumstances than my Savior. And every single time, I felt defeated. Because when I play pitiful, I stop walking powerful. So let me ask you: Have you been focused on your problems? Have you been rehearsing your disappointments? Have you been sitting in self-pity? Because here’s something I learned a long time ago: You can be pitiful or you can be powerful, but you cannot be both. (Thank you Joyce Meyer.) At nineteen years old, I suffered a massive stroke. I was unable to walk or talk. While I was in the hospital, my newlywed husband kept my family away. He told them I was okay. At the time, I couldn’t understand why my mama and daddy weren’t by my bed. But he understood something I didn’t. Pity would have paralyzed me. Pity would have kept me in that bed. Pity would have convinced me I was a victim instead of a victor. My parents would have given me pity. So my young husband pushed me. He challenged me. He refused to hand me pity. And today I walk, talk, and live whole because I was offered God’s power instead of people’s pity. So why would we choose pity now? Girl, pity never looks good on you. But God’s power? That looks absolutely beautiful on you. Because of the Spirit living in you, defeat is no longer your identity. Mediocrity is no longer your calling. Fear is no longer your master. You don’t wake up expecting less. You don’t settle for surviving. Jesus didn’t die so you could live a little life. He came that you might have life—and have it abundantly. So stop sitting in pity over everything that’s wrong. Not when the Spirit of the Almighty lives in you. Oh no. You have every reason to get excited about today. Every reason to expect good things. Every reason to believe that what stands before you is smaller than the God within you. Why? Because God’s Spirit lives in you. You are not controlled by your feelings. You are not a slave to fear. You are a daughter of the King. And daughters of the King don’t walk through life defeated. They walk with authority. They walk with confidence. They walk knowing who they belong to. So remember this today: Nothing you face is greater than the Spirit within you. You are not helpless. You are not hopeless. You are not stuck. And if you feel that way, you’ve believed a lie that was never yours to carry. Don’t buy what the enemy is selling. A daughter of the King should never settle for the leftovers of a defeated devil. Remember what’s in you. The same power that spoke the universe into existence lives in you. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. The same power that shattered prison walls and broke chains lives in you. The same power that turned water into wine lives in you. That means life is in you. Healing is in you. Freedom is in you. Victory is in you. Change is in you. Hope is in you. Power is in you. So don’t let what is around you make you forget what is in you. The circumstances are real. The challenges are real. The obstacles are real. But none of them are greater than the Spirit of God dwelling within you. That Spirit does not make you a fearful slave. That Spirit makes you a daughter. He brings you into the family. He places a crown upon your head. He declares, “You belong.” So straighten your crown, girl. Life may have knocked you around, but it has not changed who you are. You are chosen. You are loved. You are redeemed. You are a daughter of the King. And the power of Almighty God lives within you. So today, be powerful. Not pitiful. Eric Triplett and Mike Garvey discuss the complex transition from a side hustle to a legitimate business. Eric reflects on his decision to pause a coaching venture to refocus on his primary passion for aquatic ecosystem design and filtration technology. The conversation contrasts their professional journeys, highlighting how Mike built a business while serving as a state trooper, whereas Triplett turned a lifelong obsession with fish breeding into a career. They explore the motivations behind pursuing supplemental income, noting that some ventures serve as financial safety nets while others are purely for personal fulfillment. Key Takeaways: Start planning your post-career business years in advance to ensure you have a thriving foundation to step into when you retire. Operate your side hustle as a legitimate business from day one by securing proper licensing, insurance, and professional branding. Develop the discipline to step away from good opportunities when they begin to pull time and focus away from your primary mission. Leverage your personal passions and deep expertise to create a unique professional position that sets you apart from your competitors. Utilize a side hustle to provide creative fulfillment and joy if your primary career focuses mainly on stability and financial security.
