479: Do You Need a Distraction Detox? Here's What I Did.

If you're ready to live an undistracted life, join me in the School of Self-Image Membership. https://schoolofselfimage.com/join Can I tell you about something that happened to me recently? I developed a habit. It started innocently enough – just a little extra scrolling during a difficult time. But soon, I was reaching for my phone instead of a book. Checking the news before I'd even made my morning coffee. After a month of this, something felt off. I felt empty. Scattered. Not like my usual focused, happy, life-loving self. Then I saw my screen time report: four hours a day. On average. I thought about everything I could have done, read, created during that time – and it became clear. I needed to fix this. So I put myself through a Distraction Detox, and I did it in four steps. Here's what we cover: • Why distraction isn't a discipline problem, but your brain trying to avoid discomfort • How the pain–pleasure principle quietly pulls you toward scrolling instead of creating • The hidden cost of low-quality consumption on your self-image, focus, and confidence • The emerging divide between the creator class and the consumer class and why it matters • How distraction reinforces an identity of avoidance while focus builds power and momentum • The four-part Distraction Detox that helps you reclaim your attention and your life Did you enjoy this episode? Welcome to the latest episode of the Stuck In My Mind Podcast, where host Wize El Jefe welcomes guest Steven Puri a man whose career has spanned Hollywood blockbusters, tech startups, successful exits, and daring entrepreneurial attempts. This episode is a masterclass in finding fulfillment, reclaiming focus, and redefining success amidst the noise and distraction of our modern world. A Journey from Blockbusters to Purpose Steven Puri opens up about his high-profile career, giving listeners a candid look at life behind the scenes. He's worked as an executive in major studios, produced well-known films, and raised millions for tech ventures. But rather than resting on these laurels, Steven Puri brings refreshing honesty about the realities of so-called "success": the burnout, the unfocused hustle, and the underlying unhappiness that often comes with chasing external achievements. His decision to pivot from Hollywood, where he ran iconic franchises like Die Hard and Wolverine, to founding a platform dedicated to flow states and true fulfillment marks a turning point: “I reached a point where I wanted to do something where people came to me and said, 'Hey man, because of what you did, I was able to actually do the thing I was meant to do.'” The Battle for Your Attention and Your Life In one of the episode's most thought-provoking segments, Steven Puri and Wize El Jefe dissect the ways major tech companies and apps have mastered the art of distraction, essentially making it their business model to "steal your life." From endless scrolling to addictive dopamine hits, we're reminded just how easy it is to lose hours—or even years—to platforms designed to capture our attention, often at the expense of our deeper goals. Unlocking Flow States and Redefining Success What's the antidote? Steven Puri shares his deep dive into the concept of "flow state" those rare moments when we're fully immersed, productive, and genuinely satisfied. Inspired by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's seminal work, Steven Puri explains the science and spirit of flow, revealing how artists, athletes, and inventors across disciplines describe these states in strikingly similar ways. He delivers actionable advice: forget multitasking (a myth sold by hustle culture), embrace monotasking, and begin each day by identifying the one thing that will move your life forward. These practical steps, backed by his tech platform the Suka Company, help listeners shift from depletion and regret (“Where did the day go?”) to empowerment and joy (“I crushed it today and can spend time with my family.”). Podcasting, Creativity, and the Power of Community In a touching exchange, Wize El Jefe shares his own journey from a furloughed casino pit boss to a podcaster investing in quality and community. The hosts discuss how investing in yourself and your craft pays dividends—not just in the quality of your work, but in the connections and impact you create. From networking at Podfest to collaborating with his nephew, Wize El Jefe highlights how stepping outside your comfort zone can ignite creative energy and open new doors. Their conversation explores how creativity and focus aren't rivals they feed each other, and nurturing both is essential for success in the AI age. Steven Puri draws on neuroscience to explain the balance between free association and executive function, sharing anecdotes from film and tech about how the best ideas often come when you're not directly engaged with the task. Challenges of the Future—and Reasons for Hope Not shying away from the big issues, Steven Puri expresses concern about the rise of AI and large language models, warning that jobs centered on rote pattern-matching are vulnerable, and urging listeners to double down on distinctly human strengths: creativity, strategic thinking, and community. While his views on the economy and tech landscape are sobering, his faith in people's innate potential remains strong. Takeaways for Anyone Who Feels Stuck Ultimately, the episode is an invitation to reflect, recharge, and recalibrate. If you're feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or disconnected, Steven Puri offers clear guidance: each morning, identify the one thing that will genuinely advance your life, and let that guide your focus and energy for the day. Reclaim control from the apps, demands, and distractions; invest in yourself and your relationships; and don't die with your greatness left inside you. Connect and Continue the Conversation As the episode closes, listeners are invited to reach out directly Steven Puri makes his email public and welcomes questions from anyone interested in learning more about flow states or focus. For those ready to put the tools and mindset into practice, his Suka Company website offers resources and community to help you start building the life you actually want. Why You Should Listen This episode is a must-listen for anyone who wants to break free from the cult of busy, escape the digital vortex, and start living with intention and fulfillment. Whether you're a creator, entrepreneur, executive, or everyday achiever, the candid stories, researched insights, and authentic wisdom from both Steven Puri and Wize El Jefe will motivate you to rethink what success means and how to claim it on your own terms. Share this episode with someone struggling behind the scenes but winning on the outside. It's a heartfelt, energizing conversation packed with relatable anecdotes, actionable strategies, and a blueprint for getting unstuck—so you can stay grounded, curious, and empowered.

The Mindset Debrief: What's Actually Draining Your Energy, the Hidden Cost of Constant Distraction

    Transition Drill

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2026 12:35

This Mindset Debrief episode is a short-form reflection on personal accountability, discipline, and self-leadership for people navigating pressure, responsibility, and growth. In this episode, we focus on: How constant mental pull and unfinished attention slowly wear you downYou know that end-of-day tired where you sit down and realize you're wiped out, but you can't point to a single hard thing that “earned” it. No crisis. No deep, focused stretch. Just a vague, unsettled fatigue that makes you quietly question your drive, your focus, maybe even your edge. This Mindset Debrief episode pulls that apart, starting with a simple idea from Herbert Simon: a wealth of information can create a poverty of attention. The point here isn't that you're lazy or undisciplined. The argument is that what's wearing you down is the constant splitting of attention, the starting and stopping, and the never fully finishing anything before something else reaches for you. It also gets into why rest sometimes doesn't work the way it should. You can be off the clock and still not be at rest, because your mind stays on alert, waiting for the next thing, checking, scrolling, keeping mental tabs open, living in a “potentially urgent” ready state. Over time, that keeps the system revving above idle, and the episode frames it as a slow energy leak, not a single spike. From there, it shifts into accountability without guilt: noticing how often the pull isn't outside of you, it's you, interrupting yourself. The closing lens is simple: stop asking only “why am I so tired,” and start asking where your attention is being spent without realizing it. Clarity isn't gone, it's been crowded out, and it waits for permission. What if spiritual growth didn't require more intensity—but more consistency? In this episode of Michael Easley InContext, Michael is joined by Hanna Seymour to discuss her book Everyday Spiritual Habits and the powerful idea that spiritual disciplines are meant to become reflexes, not burdens. Drawing from Scripture, spiritual formation theology, and the science of habit formation, Hanna explains how small, daily practices—what she calls “seed habits”—can lead to lasting spiritual maturity over time. Rather than chasing an idealized version of quiet times or comparing ourselves to pastors and scholars, this conversation reframes spiritual disciplines as accessible, grace-filled rhythms for real life. Together, Michael and Hanna explore prayer, Scripture, joy, gratitude, celebration, solitude, and practicing the presence of God in ordinary moments—while also addressing distractions, comparison, and the pressures of modern life. Tara breaks down how street violence isn't spontaneous — it's strategic. When chaos erupts, fraud investigations disappear from the headlines. And the money? It keeps moving. From state-level benefit fraud and voter roll manipulation, to billions siphoned through healthcare programs, DEI contracting schemes, and immigration loopholes, Tara connects the dots between policy decisions, organized unrest, and who profits. This episode exposes why Minneapolis became ground zero, how fraud money fuels activist networks, why enforcement triggers violence, and how weak Republican leadership enables the very outcome voters think they're fighting against. This isn't about left vs. right. It's about who plays by the rules — and who never has to.

What if the violence you're seeing isn't random — but perfectly timed? In this episode, the host breaks down a staggering pattern: whenever massive fraud is uncovered, chaos follows. From food stamps and Medicaid to DEI-based federal contracting, the transcript lays out how loosened regulations allegedly enabled billions in fraudulent spending, and why street unrest reliably shifts attention away from it. As federal investigators begin closing in — from Minnesota to California — the narrative suddenly changes. Fraud disappears from headlines. The focus pivots to riots, ICE, and outrage politics. The question isn't whether fraud is happening. It's who benefits when no one is allowed to talk about it.

We're talking about what it looks like to actually care about the things of God again. Not just saying we do, but living in a way that shows it. It requires a hard and honest look at our lives, our habits, our relationships, and asking, “Is this pulling me closer to Jesus or further away?”We get into John 14 and 15 and the reminder that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Not “not much”… nothing. It's a wake-up call and an invitation at the same time. Staying connected to Him isn't just a nice Christian phrase. It's the only way to have a life that actually feels rooted, peaceful, and purposeful. We also talk about cleaning house in a practical way. Boundaries. Saying no. Stepping back from environments that make it harder to stay close to God. Being more protective of your inner circle and more passionate about time in the Word. Not in a legalistic way but in a life-giving way. And here's the shift I'm learning: if something falls away because you chose obedience, you didn't lose it. You made room for something better. Sometimes following Jesus feels like pruning, but it always leads to growth. If you've been feeling a pull to go deeper, simplify, and get serious about your faith again, this episode will feel like a conversation you didn't know you needed.Go to https://betterhelp.com/hopemoquin for 10% off your first month of therapy with BetterHelp and get matched with a therapist who will listen and help #sponsoredBook a call - https://stan.store/hopemoquinINSTAGRAM- www.instagram.com/hopemoquinTIKTOK - https://www.tiktok.com/@hopemoquin

January has a way of convincing business owners that something is wrong. You come back from a break, look at your business with fresh eyes, and suddenly everything feels off. The offers feel stale. The strategy feels tired. The urge to change everything kicks in.But here's the truth most people don't want to hear:Your business probably isn't broken. Your focus is.In this episode, Melissa breaks down why “new year, new you” energy is one of the most dangerous mindsets in business, and how it pulls leaders away from the very work that actually drives revenue and stability.Instead of doing the boring, proven, money-making activities, January often becomes a month of distraction:Reworking offers that are already profitableChasing new marketing strategies instead of fixing conversionHiring too soon to relieve pressureOvercomplicating strategy instead of executing consistentlyMelissa walks through the most common distractions she sees business owners fall into at the start of the year, and what strong operators focus on instead. You'll learn:Why reinvention is often a signal of discomfort, not strategyThe difference between emotional fatigue and operational problemsWhat to audit before you change your offers, marketing, or teamHow to refocus on the unsexy work that actually moves the business forwardWhat disciplined execution really looks like in Q1If you're feeling the urge to shake everything up right now, this episode will help you slow down, get grounded, and make decisions from data, not January energy.Because growth doesn't come from starting over.It comes from focusing on what already works and doing it better. We have a new way to connect to other business owners and get timely hot takes on current events and business trends. Some will get with the program, and some will be crushed in the process. The predictable pattern they are currently running looks extremely insane. They knew people would follow the stars, so now it's an operation. Fake representation of the public while initiating chaos. The loudest denials are not from the most guilty. Organized operations were started early on. Distractions make things look foggy. Precision matters in real work. The FBI has it all. Where there is no evidence, there is no crime. Proximity to power is not insight. Alleged allies are funding subversion. Real briefings are happening elsewhere. The largest groups presents themselves as allies because it's profitable. Dismissal does not stop serious investigations. Pattern recognition shows danger. It's not Soros behind all this. Selective exposure is another of their tactics. Congress members are in the signal calls. We should run Paxton like a race horse. Let's cut some thunder and do the work. Harvard is funded by the ChiComs. ICE once protected the vulnerable. The NRO is more important. Influencers poison the truth well. It's hard, but we have to carefully listen to their plans and decipher the mindset. Then let's all pray for victory, and humanity.

The conversation also explores decision fatigue, the difference between being busy and being focused, the role of habits (including insights from Atomic Habits), and how boundaries protect the work that actually moves the mission forward. Along the way, they normalize attention struggles, reframe “failure” as part of growth, and offer practical ways to stay aligned to goals without losing empathy or accessibility.

Screens dominate modern life, quietly shaping habits, desires, and spiritual health in ways many people fail to recognize. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar examine how smartphones and social media have become powerful tools that amplify the heart's desires, often drifting from usefulness into addiction. While technology itself is morally neutral, the guys explain that human sinfulness and spiritual opposition twist good gifts into sources of distraction, dependency, and misplaced worship. Phones promise connection and reassurance, yet they often function as a substitute for stillness, prayer, and dependence on the Lord. The conversation turns to how social media platforms are intentionally designed to be addictive. Drawing parallels to slot machines, the guys discuss dopamine-driven engagement and the reality that free apps profit by turning users into products. This constant stimulation rewires attention and interferes with spiritual disciplines like reading Scripture and being present with God. They challenge believers to consider how often they check their phones compared to how often they examine their souls, warning that unchecked use reshapes how sin is perceived, normalized, and even celebrated. The guys then move into the personal and relational costs of excessive phone use. Social media provides comfort through distance, yet it fuels jealousy, gossip, and slander while deepening loneliness. Digital life replaces fundamental interactions with curated images, depriving people of everyday relational friction that builds maturity and resilience. They note growing social anxiety, loss of creativity, and diminished attention spans as consequences of constant engagement. Yet the discussion also highlights practical steps toward freedom, such as reading physical Bibles, setting boundaries, turning off notifications, limiting app access, and intentionally reclaiming attention from devices designed to control it.Finally, the guys address parenting and responsibility in a digital age. They urge courage, honesty, and accountability when it comes to children and screens, emphasizing that guidance and restriction are acts of love, not burdens. Parents are encouraged to replace screen time with creativity, outdoor play, genuine relationships, and hands-on experiences. The episode closes with a call to fight rather than surrender, to confess unhealthy habits, and to invite family accountability. True freedom comes not from rejecting technology entirely, but from examining the heart, setting wise boundaries, and choosing to let Christ shape attention, affection, and daily life.Send us a textThanks for listening! Work On Your Game: Discipline, Confidence & Mental Toughness For Sports, Business & Life | Mental Health & Mindset

In this episode, I talk about the biggest opportunities in a world that is distracted and scattered. I noticed at the park that most people are physically there but mentally somewhere else, glued to their phones. Presence and awareness are now rare, and that makes them extremely valuable. When everyone else is distracted, the person who can stay fully present stands out. The opportunity belongs to those who can focus while the rest of the world checks out. Show Notes: [02:35]#1 Understand that presence, when you have it creates safety, trust and authority.  [10:55]#2 Distraction has trained you to miss details.  [15:58]#3 Proximity is not participation. [19:25] Recap Episodes Mentioned: 1025: The Opportunity Is In The Opposites Next Steps: --- Power Presence is not taught. It is enforced. If you are operating in environments where hesitation costs money, authority, or leverage, the Power Presence Mastermind exists as a controlled setting for discipline, execution, and consequence-based decision-making. Details live here: http://PowerPresenceProtocol.com/Mastermind  This Masterclass is the public record of standards. Private enforcement happens elsewhere. I share how I'm reassessing everything that takes up my brain space, from inbox clutter to beauty routines, and why even “small” interruptions are secretly costing you hours of momentum.
