In this Season 14 review (episode 376) Andrea Samadi revisits highlights from her interview with Dr. John Ratey about the science of exercise, nutrition, and social connection for brain health and longevity. The episode explains Peter Attia's rule for foundational fitness, warns against sugar dependence and fat phobia, and presents the three biggest levers for healthy aging: exercise, diet, and social connection, plus practical tips to track and apply these habits. Takeaway: prioritize consistent movement, whole foods, and meaningful connection to boost mood, memory, and overall well-being. On today's episode #376, we review PART 2 of our 2021 interview with Dr. John Ratey and will learn: ✔  3 Science-backed keys to brain health: Exercise, Nutrition and Connection ✔ What is Attia's Rule that allows us to dive deep into diet and nutrition? ✔ Practical Tips for improving consistent movement, our diet and social connection to boost overall well-being and brain health.  Welcome back to SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Episode 376: PART 2 Featuring Dr. John Ratey For today's Episode 376, we continue with PART 2 of our review with Dr. John Ratey, covering the first health staple that we know is scientifically proven to boost our physical and mental health: exercise.  We first met Dr. Ratey on Episode 116[i]  (back in March 2021) on his book “The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.” Dr. Ratey is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Ratey has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books in 17 languages. You'll notice that around the time of the pandemic, in 2020, our interviews took a turn towards health and wellness, and to stay on track, I created a framework of our Top 5 Health Staples on Episode 87[ii], which eventually evolved into our Top 6 Health Staples.

They examine how Trump weaponizes distraction to keep the country overwhelmed, how the Epstein scandal could still explode into the center of politics, and what happens when accountability collapses and impunity becomes the operating system. With MAGA fractures starting to show, they ask whether unity among democracy-defenders can stop a takeover designed to melt down American institutions from the inside out — and what the consequences are if it fails. There are various levels of chanting, and two of them can be identified as attentive chanting and inattentive chanting. So, attentive chanting means that I'm very much aware that I'm chanting. I'm also hearing the syllables, aware of the name, the quality of it; there's some engagement of my mind. And inattentive chanting means it's like idling a car—the car is idling, and then you're doing something else. We can be chanting, the lips moving, and the sound going out, but my mind can be attached to another process. For instance, I might be thinking about the fact that I forgot to buy ginger and have to go to the store, or any other number of things—an email that I didn't send. That's where my mind is actually engaged, but the mouth is going, sound is coming, but I'm not attentive, not attached. Attention means ten. It's the same word that's in tendon. A tendon attaches the muscle to the bone. And when we have attention to the Holy Name, there is present engagement at the very moment, and I'm not thinking of something else. So, in practicing chanting, it can be very helpful to be just aware of which stage I'm in. Am I in the attentive state, or am I in the inattentive state? Not attentive to the Holy Name, or attentive to the Holy Name? And if I keep checking in with that and seeing, "Am I attaching to it? Am I engaging with the Holy Name with my mind right now, my awareness," then I'm likely to feel enlivened and not want to stop chanting. And if I'm not aware of it, if I'm thinking of something else, there is a point at which, during japa period, I'll think, "I've got to go. I just got to go somewhere," because I can't stay here. So, those are the two things that one can be aware of that can be really helpful. This makes it simple: just keep coming back to the attention, giving attention to the Holy Name. Just ask yourself, "What stage am I in? Attentive or inattentive?" And then use your free will to move back into the attentive stage. .------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #makejapagreatagain #mantrameditation #chantharekrishnaandbehappy #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Practical takeaways include exercising before challenging work or school, prioritizing low-glucose nutrition, using hormesis (fasting, intense exercise, sauna) to increase resilience, and improving sleep and stress management to support cognitive health. On today's episode #375, we review our 2021 interview with Dr. John Ratey and will learn: ✔ How physical activity boosts attention and academic performance to improve results at school or in the workplace. ✔ What should we all understand about BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor) also known as “miracle grow” for the brain. ✔ How to build a faster, stronger, more resilient brain with exercise, nutrition, and with understanding hormesis. Dr. Ratey has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books in 17 languages, including the groundbreaking ADHD “Driven to Distraction” series with Dr. Edward (Ned) Hallowell, MD. n our conversation with Ridgeline High School volleyball coach Jaicee Roden, one principle came through loud and clear: the athletes who rise to the top are the ones who learn to eliminate distractions.Coach Roden, who has led some of Utah's most competitive volleyball programs, shared how she's seen the mental side of sports evolve in the age of constant connection. “Kids today have bigger battles with social media,” she said. “They're not always sure why they're doing what they're doing anymore.”She pointed to Dr. Craig Manning's book The Fearless Mind and its formula for high performance:Potential + Training – Distractions = Performance.“The elimination of distractions is everything,” Roden explained. “The athletes who can build a better relationship with eliminating distractions are the ones who become elite.”That's a perfect example of the E4A principle Win the Hour — the call to be intentional with our time, to focus on what matters most in the moment, and to do what needs to be done rather than be pulled away by what doesn't.Coach Roden helps her players identify their distractions — from phones and social media to something more subtle, like perfectionism or self-doubt. “We don't realize that our own hyper-criticism can be a distraction,” she said. “Good isn't bad — but good is never great. If we want to be great, we have to rise above good.”Her players use mental performance tools like Dr. Manning's High Performance Journal to stay focused on their tasks — not their ego. “Task orientation,” she explained, “is when we know our role and we complete it, no matter how we feel. Ego orientation is when we think, ‘How does this make me look?' The more we focus on the task, the more we grow.”Coach Roden's approach reminds every athlete that greatness isn't about doing more — it's about doing what matters most, free from distraction. As she said, “Perfection isn't an option, but progress is.”So, how can you “Win the Hour”? Identify your distractions. Make a plan for when you'll train, study, and rest. Focus on your tasks, not your ego. And above all — keep your eyes up to the work.####Especially for Athletes:• Website: https://e4a.org• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EspeciallyForAthletes/• X: https://x.com/E4Afamily• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/especiallyforathletes/• YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmbWc7diAvstLMfjBL-bMMQJoin the conversation using #TheSportlightPodcast####Credits:Hosted by Dustin Smith & Shad MartinProduced by Shad Martin and IMAGINATE STUDIO

Somehow we found ourselves diving into Carrot Top, because we're professionals. We dive into the biopics and we're working on some lists. hopefully everyone is staying safe out there. Thank you for journeying with us this season as we explored the realities of technology and its impact on various aspects of our lives.   Questions to ponder this week:  Ask regularly this week, “God, what have you given me to give to others?”  How in touch am I with the deep work to which God has called me? Am I clear on what the work is for which I've been created and God has prepared for me?  We're back for Season 27, titled “Taming our Technologies: [Spiritual] Practices for a Digital Age.” This season we have a special co-host, pastor, author, and podcast host Jay Y. Kim! Jay will be joining Ruth all season long to explore the impact technology is having on our lives with God, our attention span, our parenting, our community, and our creativity. Jay and Ruth will wrestle with their own questions and wonderings about finding balance in using technology in good and helpful ways while also acknowledging its challenges. This season aims to be gracefully thought-provoking, practically helpful, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging.   Jay Kim serves as lead pastor at West Gate Church in the Silicon Valley of California. He's the author of several books including Analog Christian, Analog Church, and Listen, Listen, Speak. Jay also hosts the Digital Examen podcast and much of his work focuses on the intersection of the digital age and spiritual formation.  Mentioned in the episode: Analog Church by Jay Y. Bespoken Spirits isn't your typical whiskey distillery. Yes, they're based in the American bourbon heartland of Lexington, Kentucky, and yes, they often make private label whiskeys for clients. But everything from how Bespoken Spirits distills their whiskey to how they market it is done with the help of AI. Jordan Spitzer, their head of flavor, can finish a whiskey in days instead of years—while precisely crafting its taste—using their machine-learning backed approach. And Wane Lindsey, their director of marketing, credits AI tools with helping his tiny team punch way above their weight. The result is a whiskey that may not be traditional, but still tastes great—and in a fraction of the time it would otherwise take. That's time they can spend on the creative side of their craft and the work that has the most meaning: building brands and bespoke spirits that people will want to drink. On this episode, Jordan and Wane share how AI has helped them explore creative new ways to make and market whiskey—and why, no matter how smart our tools get, there's still no substitute for human taste. You can learn more about Bespoken Spirits at bespokenspirits.com~ ~ ~Working Smarter is brought to you by Dropbox Dash—the AI universal search and knowledge management tool from Dropbox. Soren suspects that our “inner technologies of the heart” (wisdom, compassion, and self-awareness) aren't keeping pace with algorithms, devices, and AI. He and Thomas discuss how regulating our nervous systems and tending to our spiritual practices can help offset the negative effects of technological overload. But individual evolution isn't enough. So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! Forgive us for not taking it "one game at a time" like coaches always preach.Even in today's modern college football world of just about anything unimaginable happening — Indiana vaulting to a No. 3 ranking two years after being dog meat, Jimmy Rogers and his 33-point underdog "Washington State Jackrabbits" almost beating No. 4 Ole Miss — many football fans in the Dakotas are already looking ahead to next week. While No. 1 North Dakota State and No. 2 South Dakota State hunker down for road games at perennial MVFC doormats Indiana State and Murray State on Saturday, "Nobody's Listening Anyway" hosts John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer dare compare the FCS big dogs' resumes and opine on how ready the seemingly vunerable Jacks are for the seemingly teflon Bison.Specifically, is the "bust" part of the boom-or-bust SDSU offense concerning if not alarming? Will the return of top wideout Lofton O'Groske erase those concerns? At the top of many fans' minds is the potential return of ESPN's College Gameday to Brookings for the Dakota Marker Game? Is the breathless lunging at the Mother Ship on social media worth it? Well, yeah, considering the vivid and fun memories that Zim shares of the crew's broadcast the morning of this matchup in 2019.  This leads into a discussion about the merits and misery of watching Pat McAfee, or of being co-host A.J. Hawk on McAfee's daily show. After that sidetrack, a discussion about the emergence of freshman quarterbacks at both Augustana and USF — Rich Lucero, Jr., and Tate Schafer. Then, about USD and its ugly but effective 19-14 win at Indiana State and if the Coyotes' clear establishment of their identity is serving them well enough to for monster final month of showdowns against Top 25 Valley teams. Finally, what does Zim make of the Matt Rhule era at Nebraska now that the end may be near, with speculation he's a top candidate for the Penn State opening and the former PSU linebacker expressing unabashed love for both institutions upon being asked about the position on Monday.

The conversation explored themes such as spiritual awakening, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in human consciousness, and the concept of global consciousness splitting. Geoffrey shared his personal experiences and insights into the evolving relationship between technology and spirituality, highlighting the transformative potential of AI in accelerating human enlightenment and fostering deep metaphysical connections. About Geoffrey: The early spiritual curiosity of a young man was all but forgotten as he served a few years in the US Army as a Public Information Specialist at the NASA Ames Research Center (Mountain View, California), and then stepped into the business world. After finding his way to senior management positions in several advertising agencies, Geoffrey started his own marketing company in Dallas, Texas at the ripe old age of 28. Later on, he co-founded an aviation telecommunications company (provider of Internet services for business jets and commercial airlines, now known as Gogo), serving as Vice President of Sales and Marketing until 2001. In a stroke of ironic prescience, Geoffrey holds three patents for multidimensional telecommunications technologies, as well as numerous trademarks and copyrights. Does it ever seem like your thoughts have a mind of their own? Persistent negative thinking, anxiety spirals, or lingering offenses can quickly take over if you don't know how to stop them. But here's the good news—you can take control of your thoughts, and God has already given you the tools to do it. Pastor Kyle Idleman joins me on the 4:13 and shares how brain science and Scripture agree that we must pause and think about what we're thinking about. But we can't stop there! We have to clean out that thought closet! So today, Kyle will teach you how to take every thought captive, silence the lies and replace them with the truth, and break down the destructive mental strongholds that keep you stuck. Whether it's anxiety, anger, fear, insecurity, or even the occasional racing mind you're dealing with, listen in! This conversation will give you a practical, hope-filled path to renewing your mind. What if the key to a meaningful life isn't doing more—but doing less, with intention? In this powerful conversation, Michael and Megan talk with Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks and Meditations for Mortals, about the myths of productivity, the illusion of control, and why accepting our finite nature might be the best thing we can do for our peace, purpose, and productivity.Memorable Quotes“It's the relaxation of now I can just do the things that matter the most… I can just sort of dive in because I'm no longer trying to make all my actions feel like they are part of some process of eventually getting to total domination of my time and perfect optimization.”“You are being confronted again with this ridiculous thing that it is to be a human—which is to be capable of imagining basically an infinite amount of possibilities and eventualities, but ultimately being a sort of finite material animal and having to choose only some of them.”“Almost everybody who is trying to sort of optimize themselves into absolute control, you know, they're not succeeding. Life is miserable and they're letting people down all over the place.”“There isn't any system or philosophy or approach or sports nutrition drink that is going to enable you to sort of win the battle with human limitation… Now, we figure out how to flourish in absolutely fantastic and wonderfully meaningful and interesting and lucrative ways within those limitations rather than running away from them.”“There's a way of going with the flow that is actually more constructive and productive as well as more peaceful and meaningful.”“I really found that just sort of expecting discomfort from things that matter to me—whether that is a piece of work or an aspect of relationships or parenting—just knowing that it's going to feel uncomfortable sometimes because it's bringing me to my edge and my limitations makes a huge, huge difference.”“A lot of our productivity is the result of anxiety. And I would like to live a productive life for other reasons.”Key TakeawaysRadical Acceptance is Key. Once you stop trying to win the battle with your human limitations, everything changes.Distraction is Avoidance in Disguise. Most often, we're dodging discomfort—and the way out lies in tolerating discomfort.Optimization is Not Salvation. We think we can problem-solve our lives, but tools and systems will always fall short. They're meant to augment, not make us infinite.Meaning is Here, Now. The moments that build a life don't happen  when everything is done—but in the doing itself.Resources4,000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver BurkemanMeditations for Mortals by Oliver BurkemanThe Imperfectionist (Newsletter)Watch on YouTube at:  https://youtu.be/571YmI5h_CsThis episode was produced by Sarah Vorhees Wendel of VW Sound

Let's face it: parenting today feels harder than ever. We're juggling schedules, screens, school drop-offs, dinner chaos, and about 4,792 questions from our kids all before 10 am. So how in the world are we supposed to connect in the middle of all that? In this heart-opening episode, I'm joined by one of my most trusted parenting experts and dear friends, Caley Kukla, childhood development expert and parent coach, to talk about what real connection looks like in the middle of real life. We're busting the myth that you need “quality time” carved out on the calendar to build strong relationships with your kids (spoiler: you don't need 3-hour crafts or curated Pinterest moments). Instead, Kaylee shares simple, powerful ways to reconnect in your existing routines—car line, mealtimes, even the chaos of the after-school rush. If you've ever felt like you're “failing” at connection because of busy schedules, short tempers, or missed moments—this episode will be a balm for your soul.  What You'll Learn in This Episode: The truth about connection bids—and how to respond to your child's need for attention without adding more to your plate What “serve and return” means (and how it can transform your everyday parenting interactions) Why hour-long crafts aren't required to build deep connection How to authentically connect with yourself—so you can better connect with your kids What repair looks like when you've lost your cool (and why it matters even more than “getting it right”) How to stop should-ing yourself and release guilt around not “doing enough” Small mindset shifts and systems (like the donation station + body scans) that make a big difference Resources & Mentions: Join Clutter Cure Club Want to create a home that feels light, peaceful, and aligned with what truly matters? Inside CCC, we turn powerful mindset shifts (like today's episode) into small, doable changes that last.

We want God to come through, but on our terms. We demand ease, favor, instant breakthrough, and validation, and when those expectations aren't met, we call it a trial. But what if the real trial is our refusal to lay down our entitlement? This week on Win Today, bestselling author Gary Thomas pulls no punches. He exposes the modern lie that faith means personal fulfillment, that comfort means favor, and that hardship means failure. And he shows how distraction is more than a bad habit—it's a spiritual breakdown. Because when the soul loses its focus, bitterness, offense, and relational dysfunction are not far behind. If you've ever felt spiritually entitled, subtly bitter, or confused about why you're still offended by things you “moved past,” this conversation is for you.
