It's hard to believe that it's been two years since we launched the Elite Achievement podcast! In that time, we've had the privilege of interviewing top business and lifestyle leaders as well as helping our listeners grow and achieve their goals. Today we are delighted to share a combined episode of three of our past guests Julia Pimsluer, Beate Chelette and Nisu Patel in honor of our anniversary. Julia Pimsleur is the founder of Million Dollar Women, a New York City-based social venture which has helped thousands of women entrepreneurs scale up their businesses. She is also the author of Go Big Now, a mindset-focused book about how to get and keep the go big mindset. Beate Chelette is the growth architect and founder of The Women's Code. She provides visionaries and leaders with strategies, blueprints and results-oriented tools and techniques that give clear steps to scale your impact. Nisu Patel is a Financial Advisor and Growth & Development Director at Northwestern Mutual. Nisu was honored as one of Northwestern Mutual's top financial planning advisors in the country. He is the second youngest advisor to achieve this esteemed forum status and is the youngest within his home state of Alabama. Today we're talking with these three business leaders about how to achieve big goals in our professional endeavors. Highlights: 05:40 - You can't just start teaching someone business skills without first addressing the mindset. Because if you take someone who was raised thinking, oh, if I promote myself, that's being pushy, or women, sometimes we've been taught that's not feminine. 08:13 - You can only grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. Because if you have the dream of a $5 million business, but you have a mindset that oh, well, if I put myself out there too many people are going to hate me, or my kids aren't going to love me anymore. 16:30 - When we are building a business, the idea is not incremental growth. The idea is quantum leaps – so much more fun. When I sold my business that was a quantum leap. That's like, how do you get from a revenue of a million dollars to having a multimillion dollar payday? 24:35 - Change only works if you consistently run the new program every single day, until the new program has taken hold so significantly that the old program just kind of runs in the background. 28:48 - A lot of times, scarcity thoughts and scarce actions come up because we have fear as well. And for me, having faith, trusting the process, having a game plan, and believing in what you're doing allows you to be more abundant. 31:07 - I think belief had a lot to do with it. But belief is only so much, right? It can only give you so much energy. But I think tying your belief in what you're doing to your why was very helpful for me. Because at times, there's not many things that can re-energize you when there's just compounded thing after thing after thing going wrong and going against you. On this episode of Elite Achievement, Kristin interviews Julia Pimsleur. Julia is a scaling coach, mindset expert, speaker and bestselling author. She is also the founder of Million Dollar Women, an education platform and community that is helping one million women achieve $1M in revenues. Tune in to this episode as Julia talks about how she started building Million Dollar Women, shares the meaning and importance behind scaling a business and more ideas on how to become a successful entrepreneur. Highlights 02:53 – You need to be more than smart and driven and determined to succeed in the business world. 07:42 – Once you know these terms and how they work — what is scalable, what is not scalable? It's very obvious, and you want to help as many people figure it out as possible because it's a game changer. 11:28 – I always like to say you can only grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. 12:57 – Most people don't understand the entrepreneurial life except for entrepreneurs. So, while you don't have to ditch your friends in corporate America, you should definitely find an intentional community of people who really get what you're going through and can help you navigate the tough times and celebrate the good times. We make assumptions all day long. And those assumptions dictate how we respond to people and situations around us.Whether it's assuming the tone in your boss's email, or not following up because you didn't get a response the first time, or a client who says yes but then disappears, the assumptions we make about the people around us have major impacts on our business. But what if instead of assuming that your boss is being curt, or the person you reached out to doesn't want to talk to you, or the client who disappeared changed their mind, you stopped to notice your assumptions? We can spend so much energy on these stories we tell ourselves about other people, especially when they're negative. And that hurts your business.Today I'm chatting with a friend and mentor about her new book Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices to Overcome Any Obstacle and Reach Your Goals, and how even small shifts in your mindset can have big impacts in your business and your life.Julia Pimsleur is a scaling coach, mindset expert, speaker and best-selling author. With his most recent book, Scaling Up Compensation, Verne details the importance of mastering the art of compensation to attract, retain, and motivate talent. Although compensation is one of your largest expenses, designing an effective system can be a strategic advantage. In this episode… What are the benefits of designing a non-traditional compensation plan? How do you go about crafting a plan that's right for your business? Many businesses within the legal industry abide by the “you eat what you kill” motto. In addition to this, many traditional leaders are not risk-takers, which makes a compensation plan shift seem impossible. However, Verne Harnish is here to share how anyone — including lawyers — can create a fair compensation plan that will attract the right talent, retain top employees, and drive success. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by Verne Harnish, Founder and CEO of Scaling Up, and Co-hosts John Corcoran, Dr. Jeremy Weisz, Joshua Chin, and Adi Klevit to talk about designing a compensation plan that's right for your business. Verne emphasizes the importance of aligning incentives with the customers' needs, shares examples of real-life companies' non-traditional compensation methods, and discusses the steps you can take to differentiate your compensation plan.

In this episode… Why is compensation so hard to get right? According to Verne Harnish, compensation can be tricky because you deal with people who all have different ideas and expectations. If you want to improve your compensation system, you need to think outside of the traditional methods. Verne suggests gamifying your compensation plan to motivate employees — because everyone wants to win. In addition to this, owners need to build trust and be transparent with their team, helping them achieve personal wins along the way. When you align these strategies with your compensation system, your business will reap the benefits. In this episode of This is Concrete, Chad Gill joins Verne Harnish, the Founder and CEO of Scaling Up, to talk about transforming your compensation plan. Verne shares tactics from his book, Scaling Up Compensation, techniques to motivate employees and incentivize customers, and examples of companies who have successfully revolutionized their compensation methods. They want to see that you have a clear vision, marketing plan and how you would use the funds. A really successful business person should spend 80% of their time out of the office, networking, meeting, new people, growing all of that knowledge and relationships. It's almost like the tango - Very maneuvered steps. You can't make it up, you can't ad lib – fundraising is the same way. So before you go network, before you go meet people, read a couple books on fundraising. People only remember 7% of what you say, 15% of what they remember is your body language. And then the bulk of it is just your tone, how you present your presence.Resource LinksJulia Pilmseur Website Million Dollar Women CommunityLinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Book: Million Dollar WomenBook: Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices Podcast: Million Dollar Women Podcast Follow us on Youtube!

Julia Pimsleur has dedicated her career to breaking norms and revolutionizing the entrepreneurial world for women. After building her own multi-million dollar company and raising $6 million in angel and venture capital, Pimsleur launched Million Dollar Women, a social venture committed to empowering women to reach $1 million in revenues. Pimsleur shares her insights and expert advice with Host Greg Muzzillo in this episode of Million Dollar Monday.Chapter Summaries01:20 - Introducing Julia Pimsleur03:11 - Little PIM06:06 - Game Changer08:35 - Raising Venture Capital11:08 - The Roller Coaster Ride of Entrepreneurship14:07 - Scaling a Business VS Growing a Business17:06 - The Power of Your Mindset18:50 - Million Dollar Women21:58 - Role of CEO & MomKey Takeaways I came up with the idea of a language-teaching program for kids since there was no one doing it. Women own 40% of the small businesses in this country. So there are about 13 million small business owners that are women and that we generate about 1.7 trillion for the economy. But if you look at these businesses, they tend to stay small. So 90% of women run businesses make under $100,000 and zero employees only two to 3% of women entrepreneurs ever get to 1 million in revenues.I tell people there's only three phases of getting really rich. Number one is fear. You start something, you're scared, and you work to some level of getting to pay off the credit card debt. Then you get too comfortable where you're not worried anymore that you're going to lose your house or have your cars towed out of your driveway. And you have to keep changing and growing to get too wealthy. And some people just either don't dream big enough or they don't act on those dreams.I created Million Dollar Women, a social venture helping thousands of women across the country, scale up their businesses and get to a million in revenues.Resource LinksJulia Pilmseur Website Million Dollar Women CommunityLinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Book: Million Dollar WomenBook: Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices Podcast: Million Dollar Women Podcast >>> Follow us on YouTube
Life can be too overwhelming that we forget we have the agency to choose. Because of this, we often feel stuck—be it from our limiting beliefs or the way we think others perceive us. Julia Pimsleur, the author of Million Dollar Women and, more recently, Go Big Now, is back on the show to remind us to Make the Decision, especially as women. She joins host Kim Sutton to share how we can bust our limiting beliefs and make a done decision. Take control of life and make big changes. All it takes is for you to decide to make it. Get your mindset training in this episode!
Today our expert guest is Julia Pimsleur, the author of Go Big Now and Million Dollar Women. She's a master practitioner and coach of neurolinguistic programming and the founder of the Million Dollar Women social venture. She also grew the number-one language teaching company for kids, Little Pim, into a multi-million dollar business. Julia has always had a passion for bringing things that were once only accessible to the few to the many. She was frustrated to see that it was often only the 1% that could afford to teach their kids a foreign language. They had enough head starts, and she wanted to make language-learning accessible to more people. Now, with her coaching, she is helping women get access to more money and more freedom. A few years into the business, and seeing a decent amount of success, Julia started feeling stuck. The business wasn't growing anymore. She was the primary breadwinner in her family and she needed this to grow in order to continue. She had almost thrown in the towel until she got access to coaching and mentorship which led to her developing a “Go Big Vision” that turned it into a million dollar business. When she wrote Million Dollar Women, she shared the story of how she built Little Pim into a thriving financial success. During that process, she interviewed several women across the country who also built multi-million dollar businesses. She found that you only need three things to “go big”: The right mindset The right skillset The right network Of these three things, people struggled most with the mindset. That's when she knew what her next focus was going to be, and she became trained as a mindset coach to train women in business. If you don't nail your mindset, it's going to be difficult to find success in any area of your life. She set out to write the essential guide of where to start on the journey of establishing a strong mindset. She took the top mindset teaching and boiled it down to eight essential practices. One of the biggest things holding people back are their limiting beliefs. Tackling that requires two things: learning to identify that limiting belief and the technique to overcome it. When you look at your life – at what you don't have but that you want – there is always going to be a limiting belief around that thing. Once you've identified a limiting belief, there is a four step process to tackle them: Identify the limiting belief and say it out loud. Write it down. Come up with a positive opposite. Come up with ten action steps that will take you closer to the positive belief. To achieve things you've never had before, you have to do things you've never done before. If you can shift your mindset around accomplishing your goals, the impossible suddenly becomes possible. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I want people to think about, What do I want to change in my life in order to get to my Go Big Dream, Go Big Goal, as I teach you in my book to identify a go big goal and go for it. But the quote that always comes back for me is ‘If you want something you've never had, you'll need to do something you've never done.' And that, to me, is the ticket. Because all of the coaches I've worked with were people who embraced the idea that a coach is someone who makes you do the things you don't want to do so you can become the person you want to become, and that usually means trying some things you've never tried before. So, if someone listening is about to embark on a big, crazy dream or just really go for it, this is the time. You've decided, I'm going to make it happen. Maybe write that down on a post-it or put it up in your kitchen and think about, Yeah, some of this is gonna be hard and it's because I want something I've never had so I'm going to do something I've never done.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Julia Pimsleur | Million Dollar Woman | Book Review by Lisa Woodruff On Mondays, I will be posting a podcast recording of previously recorded book reviews. These are books that have impacted me that I want to share with you. On the last Monday of every month, my book review will highlight a female founder or business owner. Most of these women started a company from their homes with less than $10,000. Million Dollar Women: The Essential Guide for Female Entrepreneurs Who Want to Go Big by Julie Pimsleur is our Female Founder for April. I loved listening to this book on Audible. I was looking for inspiration to keep growing my business income, and I wanted to learn about how to work towards earning a million dollars. This was the first book that taught me to know the numbers of my business. This book also opened my eyes to the fact that growing a business often takes a lot of money and helped me to anticipate what I would need when moving into physical products. You can also watch this as a video review on YouTube. Follow me on Goodreads! If you are interested in trying Audible for audiobooks, you can get a free trial with my affiliate link.

Recently, she was named one of the Top 30 leaders to Watch by Silicon Review, and she is giving back to the business community in a number of other capacities as well. In this episode of Intentional Greatness, Jen joins us to share her journey into the tech industry, and talk about the benefits and drawbacks of artificial intelligence in modern society. What is Artificial Intelligence? Artificial intelligence is still a widely unfamiliar concept, but it is quietly impacting society in an unbelievably powerful way. If we break it down and think about it objectively, A.I. is any intelligence exhibited by something that is not a human being. We feed it information, it recognizes patterns, then it makes decisions based on those patterns. Artificial intelligence picks up patterns that human beings are generally unable to detect. This technology can take us very far, but it has to be balanced with our natural human intelligence as well. Conscious Consumerism If we don't rely on our own intuition and natural human intelligence, we become extremely vulnerable to misinformation and deception driven by bias. That is one of the main reasons big tech is seeing so much push back in 2020. Information is being reported in the form of op-eds but not labeled as such. Then, through social platforms and the media, the information is spread like wildfire and the people reading it are not aware that it is strictly opinion-based. This type of scenario raises a lot of ethical questions about the relationship between technology, data, and consumers. But if you maintain a higher level of consciousness and think critically, human beings and learning machines can have a synergistic relationship.

Today on the show, Heather is sitting down with Natasha Case. She’s the creative mind and entrepreneur behind a multi-million dollar business. Join Heather as she chats with Natasha about how this millennial with a passion for architecture turned foodie shifted from the drafting table to the freezer. Natasha works today as the CEO of Coolhaus, creating new products, designing merchandise and packaging, running the marketing department, building new relationships, and innovating ideas that keep Coolhaus on top of its game as zealous expansion continues. Natasha has been named Forbes 30 Under 30 for Food and Beverage, and Zagat 30 Under 30 in New York City. Coolhaus is the largest super-premium, women-founded and lead ice cream brand. They’re known for their novelties like sandwiches and unique pints, such as Street Car Churro, and dairy-free options. They started from ice cream trucks that had to be towed to an appropriate location, and from there they have grown into an incredible company and brand. Natasha attended UC Berkeley for her undergraduate studies, where she majored in Architecture and double minored in City & Regional Planning and Italian Studies. She furthered those studies at UCLA where she pursued a Masters of Architecture, and after graduating worked as an architectural intern at Walt Disney Imagineering in Hotel and Master Planning. During this time, she started baking cookies and making ice cream, naming the combinations after famous architects and architectural movements. She had also just met her wife Freya, who was helping her make the product behind the scenes along with putting numbers to the concept as a business model. Natasha admits you have to be a bit mad to get into the industry she is in, but she believes in how different her company is. The way they have built their brand a Coolhaus, their grassroots vibe, and unbelievable passion sets them apart from other ice cream organizations. Heather and Natasha talk about social media’s influence on the growth of their brand. Much of it is attributed to the timing, according to Natasha. They launched just as Twitter was gaining momentum, in fact, it was the first place they were talked about after an appearance at Coachella. In a way, they grew up alongside social media and developed a branding strategy as the climate matured. The visual brand Coolhaus and Natasha have is intentionally bright and unique--something necessary in this industry. Looking back, the most difficult challenge Natasha has faced lies in the ‘business’ hurdles that need to be overcome in the food industry. The pace at which you scale and evolve, the financial side of things, and your team’s composition all play a big role. Additionally, there was a lot of age and gender discrimination, but Natasha and her wife, Freya, view it as a net positive. The two most rewarding things throughout Natasha’s career are deeply rooted. The first is having a product that brings joy to people--something she lives for. The special moments her product creates are the reason she continues to go on. Secondly, Natasha truly loves what she does and enjoys learning as she goes. When you have fun working, you work harder. Fun and hard work are intertwined. The label “Certified Women-Owned” is a really clear way to communicate your mission to your audience. In a world full of distractions, a meaningful gesture like that can mean a lot. Natasha and Heather discuss what Coolhaus is doing to help during the COVID-19 pandemic, how important their message is in their branding, and the passions involved with building a successful brand. Listen in to hear more! What you’ll learn Natasha and Heather discuss what Coolhaus is doing to help during the COVID-19 pandemic, how important their message is in their branding, and the passions involved with building a successful brand. In honor of National Women's Day coming up this week, we learn what more established entrepreneurs can do to help women startup founders reach the $1 million revenue mark. Our guest today, Julia Pimsleur, is author of the book Million Dollar Women (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1476790302/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_2RZhEbHXFXED4), is founder and CEO of the online business school, Million Dollar Women, whose mission is to help 1 million women entrepreneurs reach $1 million in annual revenue, she hosts the Million Dollar Women Summit every spring (www.MDWSummit.Org), and she hosts the Million Dollar Mind podcast. You can learn more about Julia and her programs for early-stage women entrepreneurs around the world at www.JuliaPimsleur.com. In this episode, we cover what she's found are the main reasons women entrepreneurs only reach the $1 million mark half as often as men, what resources they can use to overcome these challenges, and what more established men and women entrepreneurs can do to help them break through the limitations to reach that milestone.
At first glance, Jean Thompson didn’t seem to be the likely, or obvious, CEO of a multi-million dollar chocolate company. She spent a big part of her career at Microsoft. And, when she became a mother, stepped out of the workforce for a decade. It took a force of nature -- an earthquake -- that set in motion her next sweet career, as an investor and then CEO of the Seattle Chocolate Company -- even though few people thought she could do it, including, some days, herself. Jean joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey and about the compassion and determination she cultivated that allowed her to turn around a once-failing company into a multimillion-dollar success story; the push she gave to the company to make jcoco, a chocolate with a social impact mission that has donated more than 4 million servings of food to those in need; and, the real reason why women love chocolate so much.
If you run a business, at some point you will have a crisis. And if you run a big business you'll probably have a really big crisis, or many crises. That’s where Sam DiGennaro and her company DiGennaro Communications come in. Sam and her company DGC work with some of the top names in tech, innovation, and media like Hulu, Facebook, and Pinterest to respond to a crisis or communicate a big change. One of Sam's superpowers is helping clients take a step back, and think through how big the crisis actually is. Sam's pioneering spirit, a huge part of her success, was already full force as a teenager when she stood up in defense of her high school volleyball team. Sam joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey, and how considering worst-case scenario is key; why smiling through everything is necessary for effective leadership; the importance of empathy; why meditation is one of her key mindset practices; and, the concept of "failing forward".
Ali Hartman leads a double life: She's a finance executive in New York City, pursuing an ambitious career --- and her other life is running a general store in the small town of Grafton, VT. She and her husband moved there from Brooklyn a few years ago, and fell in love with general store that was the heart and soul of the town. Shortly after they moved there, the general store closed. Instead of bemoaning the loss, Ali and her new friend June decided to take over and reinvent the store, bringing it into the 21st Century and online, along with new products and services. In just a year, MKT Grafton has served more than 75,000 people in a town of only 350. Ali was raised in a social justice activist household, and realized that to be a change-maker you need to do it from a base of business knowledge. Running the general store seemed like a natural move, and was an opportunity to make a big change in her own community. Ali shares her story with Julia Pimsleur, including how she put her trust in her business partner and both of their spouses to do something they never thought they'd do; how a "never give up mindset" of resilience that came of her athletic background has been an important tool; and Ali's best mindset practices, including putting your attention toward your intention.
It takes a pretty big leap of faith to abandon your cushy six-figure salary when you just bought a house, and you come from a family where success means getting promoted higher and higher. Angie Raja did just that. She quit her job, and she and her husband launched RIMSports -- a colorful workout gear company that, after 10 months, hit a million dollars and kept going! "RIM" Stands for Resistance In Motion, which refers to an idea Angie explained to host Julia Pimsleur of staying in motion to accomplish one's goals, despite the resistance one might be putting up to change. It's also a great idea to name your company after a mindset practice! Angie shares how a desire to wear a pink pair of Nike's inspired a business; how Angie react the day the company hit a million dollars in sales; her second mindset shift; how Angie washes her mind of roadblocks; and, the advice she’d like to give herself when she cofounded the company.
How did the guests on "Million Dollar Mind" get their powerful mindsets? What tools and techniques allowed them to get a "make it happen" mindset? In this episode, Julia Pimsleur teaches the principle of "limiting beliefs" and why yours are probably keeping you from reaching your goals. Pimsleur shares an easy four-step process to "bust" limiting beliefs. Once you find the belief holding you back, you can come up with a new more empowering one, and get unstuck. Take a listen and get ready to bust through your own limiting beliefs - it's easier than you think!
Nihal Mehta is an entrepreneur turned VC, running a $100M fund with offices in NY and San Francisco. He was an investor in companies you know like Uber and Airbnb and and a variety of mobile tech companies that exited to the likes of Google, Spotify and Microsoft. Nihal's career has ridden in part on a wave of serendipity and a motivation from a young age to do things that empower others. Whether investing in promising entrepreneurs, promoting gender parity, or simply offering a listening-ear and some introductions to pretty much anyone who asks, Nihal believes in doing what he can to add fuel to entrepreneurial fires. Nihal joins Julia Pimsleur to share how he is taking chances in order to be more courageous, and how his mindset practices help him find focus and recharge; and how, after years of hearing two-minute pitches from entrepreneurs, what happened when he got his "two minutes."
"It's not going to work, you’ll fail, I don't get it." These are words that entrepreneurs seeking investment or strategic partnerships have heard time and again, and the words heard many times by Sarah Kugelman, founder and CEO of Skyn Iceland (a $20M lifestyle brand in skincare capturing the attention of A-list celebrities). Sarah, who successfully raised $25 million dollars to build a pioneering company in online beauty retail and sold it to one of the biggest players in the industry, was convinced her mindset would carry her past those objections when building her next business. When you know you’re right and don’t listen to people who are naysayers or who haven’t absorbed your pitch, just keep believing in yourself until you eventually succeed. Sarah joins Julia Pimsleur to share what stress does to your skin; how she overcame a disastrous moment in her company when 80% of her business disappeared overnight and she couldn’t even get access to her inventory; and, about the mindset practice that has set Sarah on the path toward running a billion dollar company.
Julia Pimsleur is Founder & Chief Empowerista at the social venture she founded, Million Dollar Women (MDW). The Million Dollar Women book was read by over 10,000 women and motivated Pimsleur to leave Little Pim, get trained as an NLP master practitioner coach, and create the Million Dollar Women Masterclass. Pimsleur still serves on the board of Little Pim. Since it launched, MDW Masterclass has graduated over 200 women. Many have reached $1M in revenues and now mentor in the Million Dollar Women community. Just search Jason Flom on the internet. There's a lot to see. He’s a successful entrepreneur, and big-time music industry heavyweight who’s worked with many huge artists like Lorde, Tori Amos, Twisted Sister,Stone Temple Pilots, Matchbox 20, Kid Rock, and one of his biggest success stories, Katy Perry -- hundreds of millions of records. He’s also a philanthropist, children's book author (Lulu Is a Rhinoceros), and even a podcast host. He's also deeply focused on criminal justice reform and social activism. There have been very dark times for Jason; but its because of those dark times that he’s discovered a purpose that’s beyond professional accomplishment -- and instead about the amount of change he can make for others. Jason joins Julia Pimsleur to share how he got himself out of a dark place while being in an industry where you're only as good as your last hit; how a finding a purpose in helpful others find justice contributed to a life-changing mindset shift; how you dig our way out when you’ve gone down the "rabbit hole" of despair, which can happen to anyone; what remarkable thing that happened when he met Deepak Chopra in the gym; insecurity in the face of extraordinary evidence to the contrary; putting some "gratitude in your attitude"; the idea that "trees don't grow straight to the sky"; why it helps to issue yourself a "non-moving violation"; and, the "lucky-unlucky test".
How did the guests on "Million Dollar Mind" get their powerful mindsets? What kind of tools and techniques allowed them to have a "make it happen" million-dollar mind? Julia Pimsleur teaches you a simple technique called T-BEAR that maps out the steps to take in going from Thoughts to Results, so you can get more of what you want more of the time.
Julia Pimsleur is the founder of Million Dollar Women, helping one million women get to $1M in revenues. Pimsleur became passionate about educating women about scaling up after her own experience building her first business, Little Pim, into a venture-funded, multi-million dollar business. Pimsleur began as a documentary filmmaker with a passion for languages and created Little Pim to help children everywhere learn a second language. In her book Million Dollar Women (Simon & Schuster) she told that story and profiled 7 other women who found the right mindset, skillset and networks to scale up. At Million Dollar Women Pimsleur now runs an online business schools, hosts annual summits and has a non-profit for women of color entrepreneurs.
How do we get beyond the startup phase and into the scale-up zone? And what are some of the unique challenges women face throughout this process? Today’s guest has some insight on how this transition can be made a little bit easier. Julia Pimsleur is an entrepreneur and the author of the best-selling book Million Dollar Women. During her years as a CEO, Julia has raised angel and venture capital for various startups and discovered that only 3% of all women entrepreneurs ever reach the one-million-dollar mark. Today, she aims to change that and coaches women through their business so that they can scale and grow effectively. When Julia built her language business into a multimillion-dollar business, she looked around and saw that there were very few women at that level. Despite women starting twice as many businesses than men over the last two decades, they still weren’t reaching that million-dollar mark. Julia suspected that women were running into the same kinds of problems she did when she first started out, which was what inspired her to write her book. For example, bank loans. Very few women seek financial aid, and when they do, they’re often turned down by the bank. In the Million Dollar Women® masterclass, Julia helps her students in three core areas: finances, mindset, and strategy. Finances and strategy are timeless but when it comes to mindset, women are much more cautious in their approach to scaling up, and this can hold them back significantly from growth. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #204 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube The Harvard Business Review pointed out in 2011 that there are many networks we each need in our lives to be successful. Looking at this concept from a business perspective, HBR shared that a manager and leader needs three networks to be successful: operational, developmental, and strategic. As I shared in this post written in 2014, whether at work or at home or while playing, we are our own brand. How we live our lives is a message to the world at large and more powerfully to those we share our lives with, so I wanted to incorporate these three networks into both our professional and personal lives. In successful entrepreneur Julia Pimsleur's book Million Dollar Women, she shares that while women tend to have strong personal networking skills, it is their professional networking skills that must be strengthened. Modeling what she encourages readers to do, Pimsleur's nonprofit and for-profit earnings of more than $20 million dollars demonstrate she knows how to network and network well. Offering masterclasses, coaching and workshops, understanding how to network and the importance of doing so is a skill, and we can all learn how to master it. It is important to note, in order to be successful in our careers, we must have our personal lives well-structured as well. And we cannot do it all if we want to do it well, so we must build what I am calling a Life Network that will optimize both our professional and personal lives. Today, I'd like to break these three networks down, and while using the definitions of each given by HBR, I will be applying them to both aspects of our lives. As I examined my own life, I made a list of all of the people, businesses, groups I interact with through any given year. Some I will see more often than others, some will only be once a year, but all of them are essential parts of my Life Network. I then added a few more to each list that may be individuals most people in certain walks of life need to thrive. Now there may be other networks you need or have in your life, so I have included the definition of each of the networks so that you can decide in which group they would fall based on what they bring into your life. Operational definition: people you need in your day-to-day life; whose work you depend to do your work; these individuals do not work for you, but the work they do for you is what you depend on (as you cannot do it yourself) for success. Home experts: house cleaning, maintenance (plumber, contractor, lawn care, etc.) Accountant Web Designers Illustrator Editor Lawyer Real Estate Agentlandlord, loan officer, bank officers Hair Stylist Aesthetician (waxing, facials, nails, etc.) Veterinarian Dog Groomer Dog Sitter Babysitter/Daycare House Sitter Assistants (virtual or in office) Even if you are not currently in the market to buy a house or maybe you are not working on a project with the contractors you will hire, maintaining that relationships, being cognizant that it is a relationship and being appreciative of it is the strength of your network. Whether it is the holiday extra tip that is given to your hair stylist, paying your bills on time when it comes to your accountant, editor or lawyer, being respectful of the reality that they are running a business, and having paying clients is what enables them to live and work and thrive, reveals how much you respect and appreciate the work they have done for you. Strategic definition: it is all about tomorrow, looking to the future, creating opportunities or the fertile soil for opportunities to reveal themselves. Sometimes this network will overlap with operationalPersonal Trainer Counselor Financial Advisor Doctor Dentist Supervisor in your field of business (i.e. administrator, manager, CEO, etc.) No one can predict the future, but the longer we are in our fields professionally, and the longer we live in this world, the more we understand the causes and effects of events that occur. While we may not know precisely when or exactly how they will unfold, we can know that the economy will ebb and flow. We can know that people retire and new team members will be added; we also know that our good health doesn't just happen and interest doesn't accrue unless we invest. Putting the odds in your favor by being preventative with your health, saving intelligently and early for your retirement, building strong relationships with people within your work environment is being aware that there will be a tomorrow and you want to put yourself in the best situation possible. Personal (HBR calls this network Developmental) definition: individuals to whom you can turn to for advice, to whom you can trust, a soft shoulder or sympathetic ear. These individuals help you consider best options for growth, improvement, reaching your full potential. 6 Types of Friends (a healthy social circle) - learn more here Partner in life (spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend) Spiritual Advisor (religious leader, meditation instructor, life coach, yoga instructor, etc.) Mentor (also included in 6 Types of Friends, listed above) Equals in your field of business (fellow colleagues: bloggers, teachers, CEOs, etc.) Experts in other fields that don't compete with your field, but their business overlaps with yours Resource for new information about anything of value (industry news, cultural news, etc.) The premise of living well is to remain curious and continually seek new information. We are dynamic as human beings, and our world as well is dynamic. As much as we may want things to stay exactly as they are once we find a way of life that works best for us, we know that everything else is changing, and so too must we stay privy as well as a student of the world. However, the world can knock us down sometimes, so we must know where to replenish our strength as well as contribute positively to others' lives. So long as we remember we are always a work in progress and will always have the opportunity to grow should we choose, this network will enable us to do so in both our personal and professional lives. As someone who appreciates clarity where it is possible to have it, this list helps me not only be clear about what is necessary to reach my dreams, live securely and enjoyably, but also enable me to recognize that we are a part of a web of other people in this world, and we truly do not succeed on our own. While we may be have the dream, we need the team to help it come into fruition. While we may bring home the salary that pays the bills, we need to handle the money we work so hard for well, so that it serves us the best it possibly can. Lastly, so long as we are aware and appreciative, we will begin to build networks in all three areas that will improve the quality of our lives. ~SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Why Not . . . Happy International Women’s Day! We celebrate with entrepreneur Julia Pimsleur who has a big mission to help women entrepreneurs crack the $1mm+ revenue ceiling. Julia, who learned the hard way how to scale her business Little Pim to $1mm+ and beyond, is ‘Chief Empowerista’ of Million Dollar Women and has graduated 70 women so far with her teachings on mindset, skillset and how to leverage the right networks. She shares her strategies on scaling.
Julia Pimsleur discovered some startling things on her way to building a multi-million dollar business. She realized in her quest for VC to fund the growth of "LittlePim" - a language learning program for children, that only 3 percent of women-run businesses ever get to over $1 million and that only 4 percent of Venture Capital goes to women-run businesses. So, she wrote a book called "Million Dollar Women" and started the industry's marquis event by the same name. In her quest to help women scale up she has uncovered the three essential qualities female entrepreneurs really need. The proper MINDSET about going big. The right SKILLSET that allows them to fill in business gaps. The most productive NETWORK that mentors and strategizes. Julia is, without a doubt, a force of nature. ------- [Get the FREE Optimize, Automate, Outsource Blueprint here.](https://go.lessdoing.com/blueprint?utm_campaign=blueprint-ari&utm_medium=link&utm_source=podcast) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lessdoing/message

Only 4.2% of female-founded businesses have revenues over $1 million. Serial entrepreneur, scaling-up expert, and author of the book “Million Dollar Women”, Julia Pimsleur, wants to change that. She says you too can get there with coaching, reading, and diligent processes. CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour digs out the details including Julia’s three top recommended books (including “The Start-Up J Curve” by Howard Love) and a special download for CoveyClub listeners.
We've all heard the phrase ‘go big or go home,' but the sad truth is that many female entrepreneurs end up choosing the latter. Women are two times more likely to shut down their businesses due to a lack of capital, and despite the fact that there are 10 million female entrepreneurs in the US generating $1.4 trillion in revenue, only 3% of women-owned businesses hit the $1M mark. These are the statistics that inspired Julia Pimsleur to start the Million Dollar Women Movement, a venture dedicated to helping one million female entrepreneurs reach $1M in revenue by 2020. The movement encompasses an annual summit for high-growth women entrepreneurs, the Million Dollar Women Masterclass, as well as her book, Million Dollar Women: The Essential Guide for Female Entrepreneurs Who Want to Go Big. Pimsleur's work with Million Dollar Women stems from her experience as the founder and CEO of Little Pim, a foreign language learning program for young children and one of the few women-led venture capital backed companies in the US. The movement leverages the lessons she learned while scaling up Little Pim, and affords Pimsleur a platform to inspire and educate other women entrepreneurs in the areas of fundraising, sales and developing the ‘go big' mindset. Pimsleur is also an award-winning filmmaker, a trained NLP master practitioner coach and mother of two. When she isn't speaking or coaching Million Dollar Women, she can be found kicking a soccer ball in Central Park with her boys. Today she explains the vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space and explores the reasons why women tend to downplay their strengths. Listen in to learn the benefits of networking and how to develop a ‘go big' mindset. Key Interview Takeaways There is a vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space. Pimsleur was inspired to start the Million Dollar Women Movement when she learned that only 1.8% of women-run companies were getting to $1M in revenue in 2014, and only 4% of venture capital goes to businesses run by women. Pimsleur's big goal is to get one million women to $1M in revenue by the year 2020 by way of her book, Million Dollar Women, as well as the Masterclass and annual Million Dollar Women Summit. The three things you need to ‘go big' are mindset, skill set and network. Develop resilience, celebrate your strengths and get in the right rooms with the right people – and it's much easier to get to $1M. Women are socialized to downplay their gifts, but we must promote ourselves and offer our credentials right up front. If you have a PhD from Harvard, lead with that! Networking is key in making it to the next level. Though successful women are often fiercely independent, we must get outside our comfort zone and develop relationships with the right people – and that might mean attending Entrepreneurs' Organization events rather than having margaritas with our girlfriends. Develop a ‘go big' mindset. Visualize yourself running a multimillion-dollar company and know that it is possible. You've heard the phrase, “Don't take no for an answer,” but what if you heard the word “no” 50 times from 50 different venture capitalists? Would you have the inner drive to keep moving forward? Today's guest puts a new spin on perseverance with her story of how grit and grace led to her eventual success – and a Harvard Business School case study! Eloise Bune is the founder and CEO of Handwriting.io. Since founding the technology startup in 2011, she has guided the development of Handwriting.io's groundbreaking handwriting replication software. Under her leadership, the company has established partnerships with major players in the print space, including Hallmark, Xerox and 1-800-Flowers, and secured its Series A funding to continue her vision to enrich a digital world with personal messages. Bune has also played a leading role in the launch of Handwriting.io's new app, ScribbleChat, which functions to personalize text messages via “handwritten” text, emojis and animation. Bune is also committed to educating aspiring entrepreneurs and new business owners. As such, she is active in several leadership organizations like Springboard Enterprises, Golden Seeds, Million Dollar Women and WeCN. Today she coaches you to learn from every “no” and seek out mentors who can help you secure a “yes.” Key Interview Takeaways Be coachable. Bune presented to 50 venture capitalists and heard “no” 50 times. She had the strength to persist because she learned from their feedback, applied that information and kept moving to the next level. Find your Janet. Bune attributes her perseverance to mentor Janet Kraus, CEO of peach, inc. The presence of a sounding board who could help Bune supply a next step inspired her to continue moving forward. Create a list of ten people who can help you. Reach out and invite those ten individuals out for coffee by picking up the phone to leave a voicemail or to make an appointment with an assistant. Bune has discovered that people want to help, and if they can't, they will put you in touch with someone who can. Don't entertain the monsters in your head. Women tend to listen to the destructive voices that make us feel unworthy and fear we might be wasting someone's time. But we must look past that apprehension and ask for help to reap the rewards. Only 4% of venture capital goes to women. Venture capitalists are looking for a great idea in a big market, pitched by a confident entrepreneur with a team in place to execute a fully developed strategy, while angel investors are more likely to take a risk on someone who doesn't necessarily have all of the answers. Julia Pimsleur was angry. The statistics on women's business success - only 4% of venture capital goes to women-run businesses, and only 3% of all women entrepreneurs ever reach $1m in revenue - appalled her and she thought someone should do something about this. It was something of a shock to realise it was going to be her. I said to my assistant at the time, "I really want to go out and get the word out that there's this problem that needs to be addressed. Can you please research, for me, how I can do more public speaking on this important issue?" He came back looking sheepish and said, "Um, you have to write a book." I was like, "What do you mean you have to write a book?" He said, "Yeah, no one is going to have you come speak if you don't have a book." I was like, "I don't have time to write a book, I'm not writing a book." The book, Million Dollar Women, is linked to a powerful online business model that has grown out of it almost accidentally: When you write a book, it's almost like having a baby. You have to then be open to all the life changes that come about with it. Julia's passion is inspiring, and anyone, particularly any woman, struggling with that common feeling of 'not enough' needs to hear about how Julia overcame this in both her business and her book.
