My all-star special guest today is Julia Pimsleur and she's simplifying how to go BIG with your goals. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: How to check-in on the progress you've made so far towards your annual business goals and what role your mindset plays in all of this What a “Go Big Mindset” really is and how to cultivate yours, especially now the world is reopening Which simple exercises will help you to strengthen your “mindset core strength” and the three step process to “Mind the Gap” that you could follow the next time something (or someone) tries to throw you off course Why it's better to choose “results over reasons” to avoid self-sabotage with your goals …and ultimately, how to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves, so we can reach new heights and go BIG with our goals this year. I enjoyed this one immensely and I know you'll get a lot out of it, too. Grab your journal and a big glass of water… this one will truly help you simplify and soar! It's hard to believe that it's been two years since we launched the Elite Achievement podcast! In that time, we've had the privilege of interviewing top business and lifestyle leaders as well as helping our listeners grow and achieve their goals. Today we are delighted to share a combined episode of three of our past guests Julia Pimsluer, Beate Chelette and Nisu Patel in honor of our anniversary. Julia Pimsleur is the founder of Million Dollar Women, a New York City-based social venture which has helped thousands of women entrepreneurs scale up their businesses. She is also the author of Go Big Now, a mindset-focused book about how to get and keep the go big mindset. Beate Chelette is the growth architect and founder of The Women's Code. She provides visionaries and leaders with strategies, blueprints and results-oriented tools and techniques that give clear steps to scale your impact. Nisu Patel is a Financial Advisor and Growth & Development Director at Northwestern Mutual. Nisu was honored as one of Northwestern Mutual's top financial planning advisors in the country. He is the second youngest advisor to achieve this esteemed forum status and is the youngest within his home state of Alabama. Today we're talking with these three business leaders about how to achieve big goals in our professional endeavors. Highlights: 05:40 - You can't just start teaching someone business skills without first addressing the mindset. Because if you take someone who was raised thinking, oh, if I promote myself, that's being pushy, or women, sometimes we've been taught that's not feminine. 08:13 - You can only grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. Because if you have the dream of a $5 million business, but you have a mindset that oh, well, if I put myself out there too many people are going to hate me, or my kids aren't going to love me anymore. 16:30 - When we are building a business, the idea is not incremental growth. The idea is quantum leaps – so much more fun. When I sold my business that was a quantum leap. That's like, how do you get from a revenue of a million dollars to having a multimillion dollar payday? 24:35 - Change only works if you consistently run the new program every single day, until the new program has taken hold so significantly that the old program just kind of runs in the background. 28:48 - A lot of times, scarcity thoughts and scarce actions come up because we have fear as well. And for me, having faith, trusting the process, having a game plan, and believing in what you're doing allows you to be more abundant. 31:07 - I think belief had a lot to do with it. But belief is only so much, right? It can only give you so much energy. But I think tying your belief in what you're doing to your why was very helpful for me. Because at times, there's not many things that can re-energize you when there's just compounded thing after thing after thing going wrong and going against you. Highlights 02:53 – You need to be more than smart and driven and determined to succeed in the business world. 07:42 – Once you know these terms and how they work — what is scalable, what is not scalable? It's very obvious, and you want to help as many people figure it out as possible because it's a game changer. 11:28 – I always like to say you can only grow your business as big as you can grow yourself. 12:57 – Most people don't understand the entrepreneurial life except for entrepreneurs. So, while you don't have to ditch your friends in corporate America, you should definitely find an intentional community of people who really get what you're going through and can help you navigate the tough times and celebrate the good times. We make assumptions all day long. And those assumptions dictate how we respond to people and situations around us.Whether it's assuming the tone in your boss's email, or not following up because you didn't get a response the first time, or a client who says yes but then disappears, the assumptions we make about the people around us have major impacts on our business. But what if instead of assuming that your boss is being curt, or the person you reached out to doesn't want to talk to you, or the client who disappeared changed their mind, you stopped to notice your assumptions? We can spend so much energy on these stories we tell ourselves about other people, especially when they're negative. And that hurts your business.Today I'm chatting with a friend and mentor about her new book Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices to Overcome Any Obstacle and Reach Your Goals, and how even small shifts in your mindset can have big impacts in your business and your life.Julia Pimsleur is a scaling coach, mindset expert, speaker and best-selling author. They want to see that you have a clear vision, marketing plan and how you would use the funds. A really successful business person should spend 80% of their time out of the office, networking, meeting, new people, growing all of that knowledge and relationships. It's almost like the tango - Very maneuvered steps. You can't make it up, you can't ad lib – fundraising is the same way. So before you go network, before you go meet people, read a couple books on fundraising. People only remember 7% of what you say, 15% of what they remember is your body language. And then the bulk of it is just your tone, how you present your presence.Resource LinksJulia Pilmseur Website Million Dollar Women CommunityLinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Book: Million Dollar WomenBook: Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices Podcast: Million Dollar Women Podcast Follow us on Youtube!

Women own 40% of the small businesses in this country. So there are about 13 million small business owners that are women and that we generate about 1.7 trillion for the economy. But if you look at these businesses, they tend to stay small. So 90% of women run businesses make under $100,000 and zero employees only two to 3% of women entrepreneurs ever get to 1 million in revenues.I tell people there's only three phases of getting really rich. Number one is fear. You start something, you're scared, and you work to some level of getting to pay off the credit card debt. Life can be too overwhelming that we forget we have the agency to choose. Because of this, we often feel stuck—be it from our limiting beliefs or the way we think others perceive us. Julia Pimsleur, the author of Million Dollar Women and, more recently, Go Big Now, is back on the show to remind us to Make the Decision, especially as women. She joins host Kim Sutton to share how we can bust our limiting beliefs and make a done decision. Take control of life and make big changes. All it takes is for you to decide to make it. Get your mindset training in this episode!
Today our expert guest is Julia Pimsleur, the author of Go Big Now and Million Dollar Women. She's a master practitioner and coach of neurolinguistic programming and the founder of the Million Dollar Women social venture. She also grew the number-one language teaching company for kids, Little Pim, into a multi-million dollar business. Julia has always had a passion for bringing things that were once only accessible to the few to the many. She was frustrated to see that it was often only the 1% that could afford to teach their kids a foreign language. They had enough head starts, and she wanted to make language-learning accessible to more people. Now, with her coaching, she is helping women get access to more money and more freedom. A few years into the business, and seeing a decent amount of success, Julia started feeling stuck. The business wasn't growing anymore. She was the primary breadwinner in her family and she needed this to grow in order to continue. She had almost thrown in the towel until she got access to coaching and mentorship which led to her developing a “Go Big Vision” that turned it into a million dollar business. When she wrote Million Dollar Women, she shared the story of how she built Little Pim into a thriving financial success. During that process, she interviewed several women across the country who also built multi-million dollar businesses. She found that you only need three things to “go big”: The right mindset The right skillset The right network Of these three things, people struggled most with the mindset. That's when she knew what her next focus was going to be, and she became trained as a mindset coach to train women in business. If you don't nail your mindset, it's going to be difficult to find success in any area of your life. She set out to write the essential guide of where to start on the journey of establishing a strong mindset. She took the top mindset teaching and boiled it down to eight essential practices. One of the biggest things holding people back are their limiting beliefs. Tackling that requires two things: learning to identify that limiting belief and the technique to overcome it. When you look at your life – at what you don't have but that you want – there is always going to be a limiting belief around that thing. Once you've identified a limiting belief, there is a four step process to tackle them: Identify the limiting belief and say it out loud. Write it down. Come up with a positive opposite. Come up with ten action steps that will take you closer to the positive belief. To achieve things you've never had before, you have to do things you've never done before. If you can shift your mindset around accomplishing your goals, the impossible suddenly becomes possible. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I want people to think about, What do I want to change in my life in order to get to my Go Big Dream, Go Big Goal, as I teach you in my book to identify a go big goal and go for it. But the quote that always comes back for me is ‘If you want something you've never had, you'll need to do something you've never done.' And that, to me, is the ticket. Because all of the coaches I've worked with were people who embraced the idea that a coach is someone who makes you do the things you don't want to do so you can become the person you want to become, and that usually means trying some things you've never tried before. So, if someone listening is about to embark on a big, crazy dream or just really go for it, this is the time. You've decided, I'm going to make it happen. Maybe write that down on a post-it or put it up in your kitchen and think about, Yeah, some of this is gonna be hard and it's because I want something I've never had so I'm going to do something I've never done.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. For Cate Luzio, founder and CEO of Luminary, a collaborative hub and co-working space for professional women centered around learning, gathering and connecting, what keeps her going is the mindset she learned from her father: “just walk it off.” Cate had a successful career in international banking and at one point was told to slow down because it made her colleagues look bad. Cate wanted to make a bigger and broader impact, which led her to write the business plan for Luminary and launch this unique space for women. After just one year, Luminary has grown by more than 600 members plus some 30 corporate members and pivoted to digital membership during the quarantine without missing a beat. Cate joins scaling coach Julia Pimsleur to share her journey, including: how she learned that, as an entrepreneur, you have to run your own race; why her experience with IVF inspired a determination to have an impact and, ultimately, led to creating Luminary; and, how having parents who were an FBI agent and a teacher made Cate who she is today.
Ashley Kalinauskas is founder and CEO of Torigen, a company focused on providing personalized cancer immunotherapies — for pets. She is also on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. She turned down a huge job opportunity after grad school in order to pursue building her own company, and she never looked back. And, when possible investors questioned her as CEO, she took stock of the situation -- and found new investors. Ashley joins Julia Pimsleur to share her story, including what it's been like for Ashley to hold her own when she is often the youngest in the room, and the only woman; the three important words to create a productive mindset that are written on the wall of her office; what it was like to wake up on the day Ashley knew she was going to insist to investors she would be the CEO of the company she founded; and, what Ashley learned from two coyotes when she was on one of the most important calls of her professional life.
Isabel and Caroline Bercaw started Da Bomb Bath Fizzers after experimenting with scents and bath products at their own home in Minnesota. They were 10 and 11 years old. A year later they sold out on their first day at an art fair, and got their first order from a local salon. Not long after, they were approached by Target for a national distribution deal. It takes a strong mindset to make a business succeed and still have to take your finals. For Isabel and Caroline, the mindset was a mixture of curiosity, tenacity, and amazing family support. Now, they are 17 and 19, and Da Bomb is 5 years old with $20M in annual revenue (see their feature in Entrepreneur Magazine at https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/337846). The whole family is involved and they have big plans for international expansion. Isabel and Caroline join Julia Pimsleur to share their journey, including how a local salon owner gave them their first vote of confidence as a business; the moment their grandmother came to the rescue after their first website failed expectations; what happened in the period they called "The Dark Ages" when they lived among bath bombs everywhere; why the sound of a tape gun still gives them chills; and, what the sisters have already learned about self-care and pacing themselves.
Author, entrepreneur, speaker, and "Deadhead" David Meerman Scott, is a leading thinker in online marketing. His eleventh book "Fanocracy" shows how returning to true human connection is the key to growing a business. In "Fanocracy", written with his daughter, he asserts that attracting fans (not followers), is the way brands need to build their businesses for the 21st Century. David joins scaling coach Julia Pimsleur to discuss the concept of fanocracy, along with his journey, including: how a sticker on his laptop led to David joining a business that has had remarkable success; how you can use the neuroscience of personal space to your advantage in business; the techniques David uses to stay centered and healthy; and, how being a Grateful Dead and NASA "superfan" has played an important role in the concepts that led David to write "Fanocracy".
“Nothing is a prison sentence” . When something doesn’t work, you can always make a new choice. That was advice McPherson heard from her father, and it has stayed with her. Susan is an angel investor, serial connector, and founder of McPherson Strategies (a corporate social responsibility firm working at the intersection of branding and social good). On a trip to Afghanistan with other women who wanted to make a difference, Susan saw, first-hand, that business could be a force for good. Today, her company has entered its seventh year and she just returned from Antarctica where she saw climate change up close and discovered the soothing effect of penguins. Susan shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including: why corporate social responsibility is no longer a "nice to have" and how Susan was a pioneer in creating value at the cross section of business and social good; how dogs are a tonic for the soul and offer a daily mindset boost; why fighting loneliness is like battling cigarette addiction; and, what writing her book has taught her about making real connections in the workplace.

It takes real guts to quit what, for many, would be a dream job at just 25 years old, and start your own company. It takes even bigger guts to admit that your business will fail unless you do something drastic, and then find a way to entirely reimagine the business. Rachel Renock did both of those things She is the co-founder of WETHOS, a VC backed company which curates branding and marketing teams for companies all over the country. She has stayed true to one of her mantras: just keep moving. By embracing change Rachel led WETHOS from the brink of failure to a thriving and growing industry disruptor (solution) that has placed nearly 140 creative teams in the last 18 months. Rachel shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including: how Rachel and her team corrected the key thing that nearly brought the business to an end; why getting paralyzed in the face of challenge is crucial to avoid; the practices Rachel uses to clear her head; the mindset shifts she adopted that improved her success with investors; and, the concept of compounded learning.
Raquel Graham makes things happen. She's a problem-solver, an investor, and creative entrepreneur. During a polar vortex in Chicago, she couldn't get her kids to put on their scarves even with the sub-zero weather, inspiring her to invent a new kind of scarf that's grown to a multi million dollar business that's been featured on the Home Shopping Network. She later added a beanie with an LED light for bikers and runners at night, and has more problem-solving products on the way. But right as her business was taking off she found herself in the hospital with a lung infection that no doctor could diagnose. Ultimately she suffered a stroke and had a near-death experience that forever changed her. She spent months recovering and even had to relearn to walk. Raquel's powerful mindset helped her to will herself out of the hospital bed, onto the airwaves with HSN, into a licensing deal with 40 NCAA colleges, in Oprah magazine, and selling countless units of her amazing products, all in just five years. Raquel shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur including: how a Brene Brown book, and the desire to be home with her new baby, inspired Raquel to start her own business and jump from the sidelines into the arena; why Raquel had to battle doctors to be believed that she was seriously ill; why she never told HSN about her near-death experience; her challenges in growing her business to the next level; and why Raquel’s health saved her, at the very moment it failed her.

How do you achieve a high-level goal that seems to be so clearly out of reach? To help you push past the limiting belief that you might not be "enough", mindset expert and scaling coach Julia Pimsleur teaches one of the most powerful mindset best-practices: BE-DO-HAVE.
Loren Brill knew she had to change the way she ate. She was 22, she had just graduated college, and she was diagnosed with cancer. Eating healthy helped Loren to beat the cancer, but she found that giving up cookies and other baked goods was one of the hardest parts. Loren took matters literally into her own hands, and created her own gluten free cookie dough recipe. Her cookies were a huge hit with her family and her own marketing department -- her sister. Loren was inspired to set out on a sweet mission: make delicious gluten-free, organic cookies that are a healthy alternative to the preservative filled cookie dough we all grew up with. Her company Sweet Loren’s was way ahead of the clean eating trend. She caught the attention of Whole Foods, who went from "hello' to "yes" in their very first meeting, when her company was still only half-baked. Less than eight years later, Sweet Loren’s is in more than 10,000 supermarkets and is the top selling clean cookie dough. Loren shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including how she went from feeling overwhelmed to actually enjoying problem solving; how she learned to see that she and her company are not one and the same; why suffering a personal loss pushed Loren to the next important step in her business; how Loren makes sure she is building a sustainable business; and, the mindset practices Loren has adopted that keep her centered and moving forward.
Stephanie Cartin is co-founder of the digital media agency, Socialfly, one of Inc. 5000’s fastest growing companies, and one of the only women owned, women-led companies in her space. While growing her company and managing a team of 30, Stephanie was also working to bring her first child into the world. She documented her sometimes tragic (and always incredibly brave) journey through IVF and a highly challenging pregnancy in a very public way on social media. Thousands of followers breathed a collective sigh of relief when “Mighty Mollie” as she called her daughter, was born. Hear how Stephanie stayed positive while running her company, tackling health challenges and many weeks of bedrest thanks to her powerful mindset. It seems fitting that her career started thanks to a timeshare at Disney, since Walt Disney is known for the quote: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Stephanie shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including how one conversation can change your life, and why a personal experience is a powerful selling tool; why it is important in business to share who you are with as many people as possible; why sharing her very personal pregnancy journey publicly was so liberating for Stephanie, and why she would never have become, or stayed, pregnant without social media; Stephanie’s belief that everything is somehow, solvable; and, her fierce determination to honor a Disneyland promise.
For Jennifer Brown it has always been about "voice", from using her voice as a non-profit activist to performing onstage as a professional opera singer, to making sure all voices are heard in the workplace. Through her company Jennifer Brown Consulting and her recent book “How to Be an Inclusive Leader” she is educating employers so their teams can bring their "full selves" to work every day. There is a lot at stake in getting this right! Jennifer joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey, along with what it was like for Jennifer when she lost her singing voice and how that gave her new purpose; why she sees herself as a "Trojan horse" and how she is using that to make big change; how Jennifer’s voracious learning allowed her to became an expert in her own business; and, why its crucial to understand the difference between diversity and inclusion.
Alex Blumberg is one of the most celebrated entrepreneurs in podcasting. He worked for 20 years with one of the biggest names in public radio, Ira Glass, helping him to produce NPR’s beloved This American Life. Later, Alex launched Planet Money, the crème de la crème of financial podcasts. His journey to build and fund his own company, Gimlet Media, is carefully and hilariously documented in his ground-breaking podcast Startup. Gimlet now produces dozens of shows, many of them award-winning. And, recently, Spotify acquired Gimlet for $230 million. The super-power Alex has that has made all of this possible? Vulnerability. Alex shares his journey with Julia Pimsleur, including why Alex’s early jobs start helping Russian refugees and teaching middle school science prepared him for a career in podcasting; how Alex discovered and cultivated his signature storytelling style; how avoiding “emotional dishonesty” leads to greater success plus deeper connections; Alex lets us hear the very moment he blundered his way through his very first investment pitch; and, the romantic speedbump that prompted Alex to go all-in on pursuing his dreams.
At first glance, Jean Thompson didn’t seem to be the likely, or obvious, CEO of a multi-million dollar chocolate company. She spent a big part of her career at Microsoft. And, when she became a mother, stepped out of the workforce for a decade. It took a force of nature -- an earthquake -- that set in motion her next sweet career, as an investor and then CEO of the Seattle Chocolate Company -- even though few people thought she could do it, including, some days, herself. Jean joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey and about the compassion and determination she cultivated that allowed her to turn around a once-failing company into a multimillion-dollar success story; the push she gave to the company to make jcoco, a chocolate with a social impact mission that has donated more than 4 million servings of food to those in need; and, the real reason why women love chocolate so much.
If you run a business, at some point you will have a crisis. And if you run a big business you'll probably have a really big crisis, or many crises. That’s where Sam DiGennaro and her company DiGennaro Communications come in. Sam and her company DGC work with some of the top names in tech, innovation, and media like Hulu, Facebook, and Pinterest to respond to a crisis or communicate a big change. One of Sam's superpowers is helping clients take a step back, and think through how big the crisis actually is. Sam's pioneering spirit, a huge part of her success, was already full force as a teenager when she stood up in defense of her high school volleyball team. Sam joins Julia Pimsleur to share her journey, and how considering worst-case scenario is key; why smiling through everything is necessary for effective leadership; the importance of empathy; why meditation is one of her key mindset practices; and, the concept of "failing forward".
Sarah Carson is the founder of Leota, a women’s apparel company which she has grown into a multi million dollar business. What's more, she's done this in the highly competitive fashion industry where only 14% of companies are run by women. She also happens to hold a black belt in Kung Fu, and one of the things she took away from her time competing is: only constant failure can lead to constant improvement (a pretty helpful mindset mantra if you want to be an entrepreneur). Before creating Leota, when she worked in the male dominated world of finance, she felt she needed to hide her femininity. That's part of what inspired her quest to reinvent power dressing with Leota. "Fashion for Real Life", she calls it. Leota is named for her great-grandmother, and is built on the principles of empowerment, size inclusivity and optimism. Sarah shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including why, for Sarah, doing business differently is the only way to do business; why Sarah believes that striving for balance is striving for mediocrity; the shock of realizing she had limits, and what she did to manage them; and, the one big change Sarah changed in her schedule that transformed her life.
Ali Hartman leads a double life: She's a finance executive in New York City, pursuing an ambitious career --- and her other life is running a general store in the small town of Grafton, VT. She and her husband moved there from Brooklyn a few years ago, and fell in love with general store that was the heart and soul of the town. Shortly after they moved there, the general store closed. Instead of bemoaning the loss, Ali and her new friend June decided to take over and reinvent the store, bringing it into the 21st Century and online, along with new products and services. In just a year, MKT Grafton has served more than 75,000 people in a town of only 350. Ali was raised in a social justice activist household, and realized that to be a change-maker you need to do it from a base of business knowledge. Running the general store seemed like a natural move, and was an opportunity to make a big change in her own community. Ali shares her story with Julia Pimsleur, including how she put her trust in her business partner and both of their spouses to do something they never thought they'd do; how a "never give up mindset" of resilience that came of her athletic background has been an important tool; and Ali's best mindset practices, including putting your attention toward your intention.
It takes a pretty big leap of faith to abandon your cushy six-figure salary when you just bought a house, and you come from a family where success means getting promoted higher and higher. Angie Raja did just that. She quit her job, and she and her husband launched RIMSports -- a colorful workout gear company that, after 10 months, hit a million dollars and kept going! "RIM" Stands for Resistance In Motion, which refers to an idea Angie explained to host Julia Pimsleur of staying in motion to accomplish one's goals, despite the resistance one might be putting up to change. It's also a great idea to name your company after a mindset practice! Angie shares how a desire to wear a pink pair of Nike's inspired a business; how Angie react the day the company hit a million dollars in sales; her second mindset shift; how Angie washes her mind of roadblocks; and, the advice she’d like to give herself when she cofounded the company.
How did the guests on "Million Dollar Mind" get their powerful mindsets? What tools and techniques allowed them to get a "make it happen" mindset? In this episode, Julia Pimsleur teaches the principle of "limiting beliefs" and why yours are probably keeping you from reaching your goals. Pimsleur shares an easy four-step process to "bust" limiting beliefs. Once you find the belief holding you back, you can come up with a new more empowering one, and get unstuck. Take a listen and get ready to bust through your own limiting beliefs - it's easier than you think!
Nihal Mehta is an entrepreneur turned VC, running a $100M fund with offices in NY and San Francisco. He was an investor in companies you know like Uber and Airbnb and and a variety of mobile tech companies that exited to the likes of Google, Spotify and Microsoft. Nihal's career has ridden in part on a wave of serendipity and a motivation from a young age to do things that empower others. Whether investing in promising entrepreneurs, promoting gender parity, or simply offering a listening-ear and some introductions to pretty much anyone who asks, Nihal believes in doing what he can to add fuel to entrepreneurial fires. Nihal joins Julia Pimsleur to share how he is taking chances in order to be more courageous, and how his mindset practices help him find focus and recharge; and how, after years of hearing two-minute pitches from entrepreneurs, what happened when he got his "two minutes."
"It's not going to work, you’ll fail, I don't get it." These are words that entrepreneurs seeking investment or strategic partnerships have heard time and again, and the words heard many times by Sarah Kugelman, founder and CEO of Skyn Iceland (a $20M lifestyle brand in skincare capturing the attention of A-list celebrities). Sarah, who successfully raised $25 million dollars to build a pioneering company in online beauty retail and sold it to one of the biggest players in the industry, was convinced her mindset would carry her past those objections when building her next business. When you know you’re right and don’t listen to people who are naysayers or who haven’t absorbed your pitch, just keep believing in yourself until you eventually succeed. Sarah joins Julia Pimsleur to share what stress does to your skin; how she overcame a disastrous moment in her company when 80% of her business disappeared overnight and she couldn’t even get access to her inventory; and, about the mindset practice that has set Sarah on the path toward running a billion dollar company.
Julia Pimsleur is Founder & Chief Empowerista at the social venture she founded, Million Dollar Women (MDW). Marianne Schnall is one of the thought leaders leading the charge on economic gender parity, paving the way for women to advance as leaders in business, entrepreneurship and politics. Marianne shares how she went from from interviewing stars on the red carpet to teaming up with stars on stage to advance women’s issues, about her mindset shift that led to her become an activist and why asking for what you need is sometimes the hardest part of making social change. She has written several books, including What Will it Take to Make a Woman President? Conversations About Women, Leadership & Power, and is also an accomplished interviewer of Gloria Steinem, Madeleine Albright, Jane Fonda and Jane Goodall, among others. Marianne is founder of the ground-breaking feminist.com and more recently she created the What Will it Take movement and co-founded the Women and Money: Making Money Moves that Matter conference. On most podcasts, we hear from people at the “top of the mountain” (they got funded! they built billion dollar companies! they sold their company!). On MDM we like to hear from top of the mountain entrepreneurs and we also want to learn from leaders who are still making the climb. Leaders who have built inspiring and successful businesses through perseverance, reinvention, asking for help, and making big mindset shifts. David Schnurman is one of those leaders, and there’s a lot to learn from him and what he’s accomplished as CEO of Lawline, a multi-million dollar company based in New York City. He's also author of The Fast Forward Mindset: How to Be Fearless & Focused to Accelerate Your Success, and former president of the New York chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). David joins Julia Pimsleur to share how to take action with more confidence; what to do when you hit a huge wall in your business; the concept of “good thing, bad thing, who knows”; his three-step process for fast-forwarding your mindset; and, how one big shift he made around focusing on others instead of on himself changed everything.
Just search Jason Flom on the internet. There's a lot to see. He’s a successful entrepreneur, and big-time music industry heavyweight who’s worked with many huge artists like Lorde, Tori Amos, Twisted Sister,Stone Temple Pilots, Matchbox 20, Kid Rock, and one of his biggest success stories, Katy Perry -- hundreds of millions of records. He’s also a philanthropist, children's book author (Lulu Is a Rhinoceros), and even a podcast host. He's also deeply focused on criminal justice reform and social activism. There have been very dark times for Jason; but its because of those dark times that he’s discovered a purpose that’s beyond professional accomplishment -- and instead about the amount of change he can make for others. Jason joins Julia Pimsleur to share how he got himself out of a dark place while being in an industry where you're only as good as your last hit; how a finding a purpose in helpful others find justice contributed to a life-changing mindset shift; how you dig our way out when you’ve gone down the "rabbit hole" of despair, which can happen to anyone; what remarkable thing that happened when he met Deepak Chopra in the gym; insecurity in the face of extraordinary evidence to the contrary; putting some "gratitude in your attitude"; the idea that "trees don't grow straight to the sky"; why it helps to issue yourself a "non-moving violation"; and, the "lucky-unlucky test".
How did the guests on "Million Dollar Mind" get their powerful mindsets? What kind of tools and techniques allowed them to have a "make it happen" million-dollar mind? Julia Pimsleur teaches you a simple technique called T-BEAR that maps out the steps to take in going from Thoughts to Results, so you can get more of what you want more of the time.
Until you have done it, there is no way to know you how hard building a business from scratch really is. It’s all-consuming, and when your life is pretty much all about work, protecting yourself (finding time away from your email and the non-stop fires you have to put out as a founder) usually quickly drops to the very bottom of your list. Maria Littlefield didn’t have a business background. In fact she was a psychology major. Now she’s Co-Founder of Owl's Brew, a fast growing company offering tea infused with alcohol — or boozy tea — and her 5 year old company has already raised millions and grabbed several major distribution deals. But that great success hasn’t been without its challenges, both for the business and for herself. In front of a live audience at the Million Dollar Women Summit in New York City, Maria shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including how she and her business partner moved past the darkest moment in the company so far, when a huge investor pulled out at the last minute; why yoga was the essential ingredient to her sanity, strong mindset, and resilience; why it's OK to change and chart a new course; and, how one of the most important mindset shifts you can make is learning to protect your greatest asset: you.
When a painful ski accident turned a former investment banker to acupuncture— she not only found relief, she found a business. Michelle Larivee cofounded wthn. It’s acupuncture and organic herbs turned into more of a spa and less of medical experience. It's ancient healing for modern life, according to wthn. She has a big a vision for making Eastern medicine more desirable and affordable in the US. Michelle joins host Julia Pimsleur to share her challenges getting potential investors — who had never tried acupuncture — to understand her vision, how a mindset shift prompted her to turn to her network that she’d built around her for support, how acupuncture and herbs have been important tools for her in managing stress, and why building a business around something people don't know enough about, and are afraid of, takes a big mindset.
If anyone had a right to be overwhelmed, it's Ari Meisel. At 23 years old — working in high stakes real estate and in debt to the tune of $3 Million -- he was finding himself so exhausted he could sometimes work as little as an hour a day. And then, he was informed (via voicemail) that he an autoimmune disease that could mean just two things — surgery or death. Ari accepted neither. In fact, he created a third option - living better. By relentless research and testing he found a path to not only healing himself, but building out that process of hackling his own life into a structured program that has led him to a high level of success in coaching others via his his company “Less Doing “ -- leading others to hack their own lives for better personal and professional productivity. Ari joins host Julia Pimsleur to share his story and how his mindset shift was the first step in moving to the next level of his business success, and shares thoughts on how being busy is not really a badge of honor, why to-do lists are ineffective, why being irreplaceable may not be as good thing, the reason he won’t travel for the next year, how protection of the entrepreneurial team from the entrepreneurial mindset is paramount, and much more.
In most businesses that scale, the founder eventually transitions from doer to leader— how to make that transition without losing your identity and while staying true to the ethos of your business? For Sarah Larson Levey, founder of Y7 Studio - a growing multiple city chain of more than a dozen boutique yoga studios that’s not only received a $5M investment but has been recognized as one of Inc’s 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the US— that transition from “doer” to “leader" has been about working with a coach, changing her communication style, and having the humility to learn a new set of skills. Sarah joins host Julia Pimsleur to share her story and how her mindset shift was the first step in moving to the next level of her business success.
Julia Pimsleur is the founder of Million Dollar Women, helping one million women get to $1M in revenues. Pimsleur became passionate about educating women about scaling up after her own experience building her first business, Little Pim, into a venture-funded, multi-million dollar business. Pimsleur began as a documentary filmmaker with a passion for languages and created Little Pim to help children everywhere learn a second language. In her book Million Dollar Women (Simon & Schuster) she told that story and profiled 7 other women who found the right mindset, skillset and networks to scale up. At Million Dollar Women Pimsleur now runs an online business schools, hosts annual summits and has a non-profit for women of color entrepreneurs.
How do we get beyond the startup phase and into the scale-up zone? And what are some of the unique challenges women face throughout this process? Today’s guest has some insight on how this transition can be made a little bit easier. Julia Pimsleur is an entrepreneur and the author of the best-selling book Million Dollar Women. During her years as a CEO, Julia has raised angel and venture capital for various startups and discovered that only 3% of all women entrepreneurs ever reach the one-million-dollar mark. Today, she aims to change that and coaches women through their business so that they can scale and grow effectively. When Julia built her language business into a multimillion-dollar business, she looked around and saw that there were very few women at that level. Despite women starting twice as many businesses than men over the last two decades, they still weren’t reaching that million-dollar mark. Julia suspected that women were running into the same kinds of problems she did when she first started out, which was what inspired her to write her book. For example, bank loans. Very few women seek financial aid, and when they do, they’re often turned down by the bank. In the Million Dollar Women® masterclass, Julia helps her students in three core areas: finances, mindset, and strategy. Finances and strategy are timeless but when it comes to mindset, women are much more cautious in their approach to scaling up, and this can hold them back significantly from growth. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #204 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube The Harvard Business Review pointed out in 2011 that there are many networks we each need in our lives to be successful. Looking at this concept from a business perspective, HBR shared that a manager and leader needs three networks to be successful: operational, developmental, and strategic. As I shared in this post written in 2014, whether at work or at home or while playing, we are our own brand. How we live our lives is a message to the world at large and more powerfully to those we share our lives with, so I wanted to incorporate these three networks into both our professional and personal lives. In successful entrepreneur Julia Pimsleur's book Million Dollar Women, she shares that while women tend to have strong personal networking skills, it is their professional networking skills that must be strengthened. Modeling what she encourages readers to do, Pimsleur's nonprofit and for-profit earnings of more than $20 million dollars demonstrate she knows how to network and network well. Offering masterclasses, coaching and workshops, understanding how to network and the importance of doing so is a skill, and we can all learn how to master it. It is important to note, in order to be successful in our careers, we must have our personal lives well-structured as well. And we cannot do it all if we want to do it well, so we must build what I am calling a Life Network that will optimize both our professional and personal lives. Today, I'd like to break these three networks down, and while using the definitions of each given by HBR, I will be applying them to both aspects of our lives. As I examined my own life, I made a list of all of the people, businesses, groups I interact with through any given year. Some I will see more often than others, some will only be once a year, but all of them are essential parts of my Life Network. I then added a few more to each list that may be individuals most people in certain walks of life need to thrive. Now there may be other networks you need or have in your life, so I have included the definition of each of the networks so that you can decide in which group they would fall based on what they bring into your life. Operational definition: people you need in your day-to-day life; whose work you depend to do your work; these individuals do not work for you, but the work they do for you is what you depend on (as you cannot do it yourself) for success. Home experts: house cleaning, maintenance (plumber, contractor, lawn care, etc.) Accountant Web Designers Illustrator Editor Lawyer Real Estate Agentlandlord, loan officer, bank officers Hair Stylist Aesthetician (waxing, facials, nails, etc.) Veterinarian Dog Groomer Dog Sitter Babysitter/Daycare House Sitter Assistants (virtual or in office) Even if you are not currently in the market to buy a house or maybe you are not working on a project with the contractors you will hire, maintaining that relationships, being cognizant that it is a relationship and being appreciative of it is the strength of your network. Whether it is the holiday extra tip that is given to your hair stylist, paying your bills on time when it comes to your accountant, editor or lawyer, being respectful of the reality that they are running a business, and having paying clients is what enables them to live and work and thrive, reveals how much you respect and appreciate the work they have done for you. Strategic definition: it is all about tomorrow, looking to the future, creating opportunities or the fertile soil for opportunities to reveal themselves. Sometimes this network will overlap with operationalPersonal Trainer Counselor Financial Advisor Doctor Dentist Supervisor in your field of business (i.e. administrator, manager, CEO, etc.) No one can predict the future, but the longer we are in our fields professionally, and the longer we live in this world, the more we understand the causes and effects of events that occur. While we may not know precisely when or exactly how they will unfold, we can know that the economy will ebb and flow. We can know that people retire and new team members will be added; we also know that our good health doesn't just happen and interest doesn't accrue unless we invest. Putting the odds in your favor by being preventative with your health, saving intelligently and early for your retirement, building strong relationships with people within your work environment is being aware that there will be a tomorrow and you want to put yourself in the best situation possible. Personal (HBR calls this network Developmental) definition: individuals to whom you can turn to for advice, to whom you can trust, a soft shoulder or sympathetic ear. These individuals help you consider best options for growth, improvement, reaching your full potential. 6 Types of Friends (a healthy social circle) - learn more here Partner in life (spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend) Spiritual Advisor (religious leader, meditation instructor, life coach, yoga instructor, etc.) Mentor (also included in 6 Types of Friends, listed above) Equals in your field of business (fellow colleagues: bloggers, teachers, CEOs, etc.) Experts in other fields that don't compete with your field, but their business overlaps with yours Resource for new information about anything of value (industry news, cultural news, etc.) The premise of living well is to remain curious and continually seek new information. We are dynamic as human beings, and our world as well is dynamic. As much as we may want things to stay exactly as they are once we find a way of life that works best for us, we know that everything else is changing, and so too must we stay privy as well as a student of the world. However, the world can knock us down sometimes, so we must know where to replenish our strength as well as contribute positively to others' lives. So long as we remember we are always a work in progress and will always have the opportunity to grow should we choose, this network will enable us to do so in both our personal and professional lives. As someone who appreciates clarity where it is possible to have it, this list helps me not only be clear about what is necessary to reach my dreams, live securely and enjoyably, but also enable me to recognize that we are a part of a web of other people in this world, and we truly do not succeed on our own. While we may be have the dream, we need the team to help it come into fruition. While we may bring home the salary that pays the bills, we need to handle the money we work so hard for well, so that it serves us the best it possibly can. Lastly, so long as we are aware and appreciative, we will begin to build networks in all three areas that will improve the quality of our lives. ~SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Why Not . . . Happy International Women’s Day! We celebrate with entrepreneur Julia Pimsleur who has a big mission to help women entrepreneurs crack the $1mm+ revenue ceiling. Julia, who learned the hard way how to scale her business Little Pim to $1mm+ and beyond, is ‘Chief Empowerista’ of Million Dollar Women and has graduated 70 women so far with her teachings on mindset, skillset and how to leverage the right networks. She shares her strategies on scaling.
Julia Pimsleur discovered some startling things on her way to building a multi-million dollar business. She realized in her quest for VC to fund the growth of "LittlePim" - a language learning program for children, that only 3 percent of women-run businesses ever get to over $1 million and that only 4 percent of Venture Capital goes to women-run businesses. So, she wrote a book called "Million Dollar Women" and started the industry's marquis event by the same name. In her quest to help women scale up she has uncovered the three essential qualities female entrepreneurs really need. The proper MINDSET about going big. Julia Pimsleur and Business Development Fun!
We've all heard the phrase ‘go big or go home,' but the sad truth is that many female entrepreneurs end up choosing the latter. Women are two times more likely to shut down their businesses due to a lack of capital, and despite the fact that there are 10 million female entrepreneurs in the US generating $1.4 trillion in revenue, only 3% of women-owned businesses hit the $1M mark. These are the statistics that inspired Julia Pimsleur to start the Million Dollar Women Movement, a venture dedicated to helping one million female entrepreneurs reach $1M in revenue by 2020. The movement encompasses an annual summit for high-growth women entrepreneurs, the Million Dollar Women Masterclass, as well as her book, Million Dollar Women: The Essential Guide for Female Entrepreneurs Who Want to Go Big. Pimsleur's work with Million Dollar Women stems from her experience as the founder and CEO of Little Pim, a foreign language learning program for young children and one of the few women-led venture capital backed companies in the US. The movement leverages the lessons she learned while scaling up Little Pim, and affords Pimsleur a platform to inspire and educate other women entrepreneurs in the areas of fundraising, sales and developing the ‘go big' mindset. Pimsleur is also an award-winning filmmaker, a trained NLP master practitioner coach and mother of two. When she isn't speaking or coaching Million Dollar Women, she can be found kicking a soccer ball in Central Park with her boys. Today she explains the vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space and explores the reasons why women tend to downplay their strengths. Listen in to learn the benefits of networking and how to develop a ‘go big' mindset. Key Interview Takeaways There is a vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space. Pimsleur was inspired to start the Million Dollar Women Movement when she learned that only 1.8% of women-run companies were getting to $1M in revenue in 2014, and only 4% of venture capital goes to businesses run by women. Pimsleur's big goal is to get one million women to $1M in revenue by the year 2020 by way of her book, Million Dollar Women, as well as the Masterclass and annual Million Dollar Women Summit. The three things you need to ‘go big' are mindset, skill set and network. Develop resilience, celebrate your strengths and get in the right rooms with the right people – and it's much easier to get to $1M. Women are socialized to downplay their gifts, but we must promote ourselves and offer our credentials right up front. If you have a PhD from Harvard, lead with that! Networking is key in making it to the next level. Though successful women are often fiercely independent, we must get outside our comfort zone and develop relationships with the right people – and that might mean attending Entrepreneurs' Organization events rather than having margaritas with our girlfriends. Develop a ‘go big' mindset. Visualize yourself running a multimillion-dollar company and know that it is possible. Julia Pimsleur was angry. The statistics on women's business success - only 4% of venture capital goes to women-run businesses, and only 3% of all women entrepreneurs ever reach $1m in revenue - appalled her and she thought someone should do something about this. It was something of a shock to realise it was going to be her. I said to my assistant at the time, "I really want to go out and get the word out that there's this problem that needs to be addressed. Can you please research, for me, how I can do more public speaking on this important issue?" He came back looking sheepish and said, "Um, you have to write a book." I was like, "What do you mean you have to write a book?" He said, "Yeah, no one is going to have you come speak if you don't have a book." I was like, "I don't have time to write a book, I'm not writing a book." The book, Million Dollar Women, is linked to a powerful online business model that has grown out of it almost accidentally: When you write a book, it's almost like having a baby. You have to then be open to all the life changes that come about with it. Julia's passion is inspiring, and anyone, particularly any woman, struggling with that common feeling of 'not enough' needs to hear about how Julia overcame this in both her business and her book.

Female entrepreneurship is rising fast. In the US, a third of businesses are now owned by women. But look a bit deeper and you find nearly all these businesses are 'solopreneurships' - they don't have any employees and they don't bring in much money. This is sometimes by design, but not always: many women are unprepared for the inequities that still exist in entrepreneurship. In this show we meet two ambitious entrepreneurs who want to grow their companies: Julia Pimsleur and Denise Barreto. They have advice about how to survive in the male-dominated world of fundraising, why hiring other people is a must even when you can barely afford it, and how passion for your work isn't all it's cracked up to be.
