Some things that happened at the Near Future Laboratory the last weeks of 2023 including a day trip to SFO using a travel voucher that was going to expire at the end of the year, meeting with the NFL gang for an awesome lunch and chat, hanging with Will Carey from https://formation.eco to continue working on the meaning, purpose, and offering of this reinvigorated evolution of Near Future Laboratory. There were also a bunch of (other people's) podcasts that dropped (links below). And it was the 9 year anniversary of OMATA which had me go back and reflect on how I used Design Fiction to help me create a future vision of the company and share that vision with investors who were so enthralled with this vision that they ended up buying the whole company. From the Between Awesome and Disaster podcast, Will Carey returns to talk about the post-Titanic curiosity in Leonardo Dicaprio's career, The Beach.
BBMak had it all…good looks, great harmonies, relatable lyrics, and a smash hit single with “Back Here”. Despite the trio's massive success in 1999, they broke up shortly after the release of their second album a few years later. It took them over 15 years to finally reunite, but did the world miss them, want them, need them so? We're joined once again by comedian and Between Awesome and Disaster podcast host Will Carey to decide if BBMak are the ones we can't let go, or if we were lucky to be set free from the misery. What a day of news and the Unofficial 40 has your complete wrap up as the OU-West Virginia regular season finale has been cancelled due to a COVID outbreak in Morgantown. The Sooners will move on to play Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship game next week in Arlington. Or could they play this weekend? Lincoln Riley met with the local beat writers this afternoon and said he would play Ohio State this weekend if Ryan Day called him. But he also kind of said that would be very difficult to pull off. So he sort of said, 'Bring on Ohio State, but probably not.' It is signing day next week and Bob and Josh give you the full rundown of what is happening on the recruiting trail. We also try not to talk about the OU basketball team's sound defeat at the hands of Xavier last night. Will you make Josh's Christmas card list? Will Carey eat birthday cake for the first time in years? Will OU ever play football again? We think so. Enjoy this episode of the Unofficial 40 instead of your football. It's all you've got in life right now. The full rundown follows below: 00:00 - OU/WVU canceled; onto Big 12 Championship 14:00 - OU/Ohio State? Who says no? 30:00 - Signing Day around the corner; Emeka Egbuka, Camar Wheaton, Remington Strickland + Josh takeaways from seeing Cody Jackson/Jordan Hudson 1:06:00 - It's early but 2022 could be really good defensively 1:10:00 - Shane Beamer to South Carolina 1:25:00 - Best case scenario for OU ending the season

Will Carey is a portrait photographer who currently has 11.000 Instagram followers and he grew his community in under two years of posting to Instagram. On top of that, during the summer his full time job is photo editor and secondary shooter for Union Eleven Photographers, a wedding photography company in Ottawa and during the winter Will is a full time student. In this conversation Will and I talk about a lot. Obviously we talk about how he grew his Instagram to over 10,000 people in under two years and then how he went from 10,000 to 11,000 in only 36 hours! We discuss how he's done collaborations with Joey Kidney (670,000+ YouTube subscribers), and how he get Brandon Woelfel to follow to him (2.3 million Instagram followers). On top of having over 11,000 followers, he has an extremely high engagement rate, more than four times the average. This can be enticing to brands and Will just recently worked with a brand (Lyft) for the very first time only recently. We talk about how he turned down the initial ask because it wasn't the type of content he puts out and that his audience is used to but how he offered an alternative that the company went for. This conversation naturally has quite a few conversations about photography, including tips and gear for beginners and whether or not you should work for free. However, even if you aren't a photographer there's a lot of good things in this conversation that anyone trying to grow on social media should be doing. Be sure to leave us a rating and review, it helps us get discovered by new people. We recently surpassed 100 downloads, a modest amount but the first milestone en route to many more! We're trying something new this week, take a picture or screenshot of you listening to this podcast and share it to your Instagram Story and tag @mysocialpod and I will share it to our story. Bryson Turner & Will Carey join me in a discussion about the invention of fire. Bryson develops an interesting theory about it.
Possibly my favorite segment from the old "Meaning of Life" radio show ever. Comedians Bryson Turner and Will Carey are in studio. Bryson makes a bold prediction, which is that someday Will is going to kill a whole bunch of people, maybe including his own family that has yet to be formed.
