I sit down with Coree Woltering—pro athlete for Merrell, Janji, and Smartwool—for a raw and hilarious conversation about his redemption at the Cocodona 250. From being the very first person to drop out of the inaugural race to finishing it five years later, Coree shares the highs, lows, and muddy middle miles of his journey. We talk about impromptu race entries (Venmoed Southern States 200), wild hallucinations, ankle weirdness, and what happens when your crew gets stranded with a flat tire halfway through a 250-mile race. Coree also opens up about finding joy in ultra-distance running, managing a team for Merrell, and his ambitious upcoming plans—including an Appalachian Trail FKT attempt and maybe even Moab 240.Follow Coree online: https://www.instagram.com/coreewolteringChapters00:00 Corey Woltering's Journey Begins02:45 Redemption at Cocodona06:01 Lessons from Southern States08:52 The Start of Cocodona 202312:07 Navigating Challenges and Embracing Adventure15:05 The Pacer Experience18:01 Unexpected Setbacks21:08 The Descent into Jerome24:09 The Hangover Trail Experience34:40 The Journey of Social Media in Ultra Running37:37 Experiencing the Highs and Lows of Endurance Racing39:29 The Breakdown: Mental and Physical Challenges42:44 Crew Dynamics and Support in Ultra Events45:37 Navigating the Final Stretch: The Last Marathon49:41 The Finish Line Experience: Quiet Triumphs53:47 Reflections on Future Races and Goals56:38 The Evolution of an Ultra Runner: From Triathlons to Ultra Events01:00:36 Athlete Management: Bridging Experience and Brand NeedsShop at our sponsors: Janji.com, garagegrowngear.com, and csinstant.coffeeSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Coree Woltering who is a Rock/Creek Outfitters staff and Northface runner. Coree, who's known by some as one of the #cornfieldcowboys, was born and raised in Ottawa, Illinois. He began his running career in the 400m and 800m distances and had his sights on becoming a professional triathlete, qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships twice. But before long, he discovered ultrarunning and became mesmerized by the idea of running 100 miles in the mountains. Coree took his frontier to the next level in 2015, where he won every trail 50k he signed up for that year. In 2016, he averaged a 6:36 per mile to win the Tunnel Hill 50. At 30 years old, he set the fastest known time (FKT) in 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. And then followed that up with that Pinhoti Trail FKT in 2021. He ended up loving the trail so much that he moved to the south! Most recently, Coree finished Western States 100. When Coree is not running, he is probably sitting on his balcony drinking a cup of coffee, or selling shoes at Rock Creek! Stop by Rock/Creek Outfitters on Manufactures Rd in Chattanooga Tn and get advice from Coree. Accomplishments: Ice Age Trail FKT (~1,200 miles), Pinhoti Trail FKT 349 miles, 2019 World's Toughest Race Eco-Challenge Fiji, 2x 70.3 World Championship Finisher, 7x 100 mile finisher, 2:26 Chicago Marathon 2016, 5:30 Tunnel Hill 50 Mile 2016, 25 + Ultramarathon podium finishes. After trying to unsuccessfully rebound after a few divorces, Coree finally figured out the importance of becoming a whole person through healing with God. She shares her passion to help those who have gone through the pain of divorce find the healing journey that puts them in a position to thrive. Episode Discussion PointsFunny story of a snake while she was helping a woman in Paraguay on a healing journey What Coree thought life would look like for her when she was in high school Her first marriage ended in divorce after 10 years and why she shouldn't have done a quick rebound marriage, and another marriage. Coree finally realized she needed to do some healing before she moved forward, but she had to hit rock bottom to figure out she needed to heal. She realized the common denominator was her. AFter reading a book about the Law of Attraction she realized she was attracting what she was putting out there: “Two broken people attract each other.” In order to attract a whole and healed person, you need to be a whole and healed person. How once she came back to church and started learning the truth and developing a relationship with God, that God was able to help her heal. She also found it was important to have a good support group of friends. Half way through her healing she got a coach to keep her accountable. God designed us to have relationships with others—because in relationships with others is where we grow. How Coree likes to make quiet time in the morning to connect with God. This usually includes prayer, praise music, talking to God about what she should do that day and how she wants to do what He wants her to do that day. “Help me to stay out of my agenda and do Your agenda today.” How she has learned to give God the troubles she is facing and how she asks God to help her with those. At the end of the day Coree likes to write things she can celebrate from the day or how she has seen God's hand. She also records the answers she gets. Because there is always bad happening, recording and looking for good has given her a “different pair of eyes” to see and attract good in her life. “If you really want change in your life, you're going to have to be intentional about making it happen.” Inner peace takes time to achieve, but now Coree is in such a better place and has awesome friends. Advice to DivorceesYou're not alone in your journey—even though it may be unique to you, God is with you. Allow God in to help you heal. Healing is worth it in the end. Treat your heart like a garden and pull out the hurtful things there: fear, rejection, hatred, anger, shame and guilt so we can let the flowers grow. Be realistic about where you are and start right there at the crossroads Be intentional—don't just wander. Know what you want and where you want to go. Be real with yourself about where you are in your journey. Set goals. (Example: Don't tear down your former spouse because God loves them and it won't make you any bigger.) For the really hard days—Set a goal to do one thing for yourself every morning before you leave home (ex: make sure your clothes match or that you get a shower). Read a declaration for you and your life daily. (Check out the Patricia King's book she used for her declarations https://amzn.to/3VjDPWk (here).) Replace the Adversary's Negative thoughts with Positive Affirmations. Write positive affirmations all over to remind you of your worth, for example: on your phone, on your car visor, on you mirror. Make new happy memories: Once you tackle little things start setting bigger goals to tackle places or things you are avoiding because of memories (like visiting certain restaurants). Hack: To make it easier, take a good friend with you. Remember the car windshield analogy: the front window is so much bigger and broader that always looking through the little rearview mirror. Move forward to bigger and better things with God's help. Build a core group of friends you can be real...

Over our last two podcasts, we interviewed two really different runners: ultrarunner Coree Woltering and 800m runner Sadi Henderson. This week, we reflected on our big takeaways from our time with each of them. We also caught up on a lot of missed news, like the performances at USA Indoor Nationals, the Tokyo Marathon, Grant Fisher's new American records, the new 50K world record, and the death of John Landy.
Welcome to Episode 46 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! It has taken me WAY longer than planned to get this show back into action, so thank you for your patience. I'm very pleased to finally be recording again and to bring you today's Athlete Nutrition Profile, featuring elite ultrarunner Coree Woltering. You may be familiar with Coree from World's Toughest Race - Eco Challenge Fiji (streamed on Amazon) - he was one of the athletes on Team Onyx, the first all-black team to compete in expedition racing. Or you may have read one of the many features on him as a black and openly gay ultrarunner living in the Midwest (not a typical home base for a trail runner), and how he is promoting racial and geographical diversity in the sport. Or perhaps you've seen the viral pictures of him racing in his signature Noodle Bagz bathing suit. If you're not at all familiar with Coree, then you're in for a treat. He's a formidable athlete, but he's also a fun, down to earth guy, with SO many amazing stories to share. Here are a few of the things we cover in today's show:Growing up in Ottawa, Illinois from a nutrition perspective Juggling a variety of sports (track, XC, swimming, and eventually triathlon) from middle school through college, and his struggles with and recovery from disordered eating Discovering and falling in love with ultra running - early nutrition mishaps and later success once he got his nutrition dialed in Eco Challenge Fiji - a race nutrition story that will make you cringePandemic FKT on the Ice Ace Trail - what does nutrition look like while running 1,147 miles in 21 days when everything is shut down?! Coree's everyday eating routine as well as his favorite sports nutrition productsCake 365 - Coree's 2022 resolution to enjoy a baked good every single dayAnd of course, much much more. Thank you so much Coree for your time and the many many laughs we shared. I know you'll enjoy this episode!
