Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Andy Hunter, and Phil Thomas. Today, we dive into the legal battle over video game likeness rights and how some experts argued the name, image, and likeness rights of college athletes came in conflict with video games' growing free speech rights in the 2010s. This discussion will get us one step closer to learning how college athletes received NIL (name, image, and likeness) rights and set the stage for EA Sports College Football 25.Topics discussed include: The legal image rights of dictators (and athletes), the twisted legal battle over Tony Twist, probably the first reference to the 1990s movie Solo in 30 years, and what's the legal standing of buying things ironically? For more on arguments for free speech in the Hart v. Director Yance Ford recounts the murder of his brother William Ford and the racial injustices that followed. In an unfortunately all too familiar story this doc does a great service to educate on the injustices people of colour have to endure in society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/threedudespod/message
Speaker – William Ford
“D” is for DeSaussure, William Ford (1792-1879). U.S. senator.
How do we speak to God when we face difficult situations, whether it be Covid, Ukraine or something else? Lament in the Bible offers one way for Christians both to express honestly to God how we feel about our difficulties, and to reaffirm trust in God as relevant even to these situations. In this seminar we will explore the importance of lament in the Bible, looking at what it is, where it is found, and how it is relevant for us. We will also ask whether there is anything that we cannot say to God as part of our relationship with him. William Ford teaches Old Testament and Hebrew at Belfast Bible College. He has a particular interest in how we understand theologically difficult passages in the Bible.

Will Ford, III is the Director of the Marketplace Leadership Major at Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, TX and is a founder of 818 The Sign. Many know him internationally, however, for his family heirloom passed down through history, and its connection to slavery and prayer for freedom. As a leader in the prayer movement, Will uses this “prayer bowl” (Rev. 5:8) as a catalyst for mobilizing prayer and teaching on intercession, revival and societal transformation. He believes that it was the prayers of a godly remnant of all races—who were revivalists and abolitionists—that brought revival to America and ultimately ended slavery. Receiving their mantle from yesterday, Will is actively training a new generation to release justice to the most marginalized today. Will is a father of four. He and his wife Dehavilland live in Dallas, TX.
Long Island or the Deep South? They might have more in common than you think. Angela picks up the true crime baton to join Bob on a sad tale where the attempt at justice barely exists. Yance Ford refuses to led the narrative of his late sibling, William Ford, be controlled by anybody else. When William was shot, unarmed, in a Long Island garage it seemed very clear very quickly that the shooter in this scenario was gonna get slapped on the wrist with a pillow. Long Island courts paint a narrative of William that Yance refuses to accept. A new look at a decades old tragedy. Sad as fuck. We maybe cried in this one. Our mascara really ran. On April 7, 1992, Mark Reilly shot and killed William Ford Jr. in an auto body garage on Long Island. Reilly admits to doing it, but the grand jury that heard the case didn’t indict him. The shooting and the grand jury’s decision tormented William Ford’s family and friends. His brother, Yance, decided he had to find out why things happened the way they did, and he had to let the world know that William was a great guy. The result is "Strong Island," a recently released Netflix documentary that has received rave reviews. Yance Ford joins us on Court Talk to discuss it all – the shooting, the role of the grand jury, and much more. Strong Island chronicles the arc of a family across history, geography and tragedy - from the racial segregation of the Jim Crow South to the promise of New York City; from the presumed safety of middle class suburbs, to the maelstrom of an unexpected, violent death. It is the story of the Ford family: Barbara Dunmore, William Ford and their three children and how their lives were shaped by the enduring shadow of race in America. In April 1992, on Long Island NY, William Jr., the Ford’s eldest child, a black 24 year-old teacher, was killed by Mark Reilly, a white 19 year-old mechanic. Although Ford was unarmed, he became the prime suspect in his own murder. A deeply intimate and meditative film, Strong Island asks what one can do when the grief of loss is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence, which can bind a family in an imitation of life, and a nation with a false sense of justice. Director Yance Ford, who is transgender, is a recipient of the Creative Capital Award, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a Sundance Documentary Film Program Fellowship, and was among Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2011. For ten years Ford was privileged to work as Series Producer for the PBS showcase POV and where his curatorial work helped garner more than 16 Emmy nominations. Ford is also an architectural welder, and while at Modern Art Foundry he helped assemble the sculpture "Maman" by Louise Bourgeois—the series of three spiders exhibited at Rockefeller Center, and now on permanent display at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Director Yance Ford joins us for a conversation on grief, justice, racism, expectations, and the profound impact this 25-year long saga has had on his family.
