On the 100th episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Sean Kanan, author, actor, Emmy-award winning producer, and founder of Bad Boy Hot Sauce. Kanan, who has portrayed Deacon Sharpe on CBS's “The Bold and the Beautiful” since 2000, got his Hollywood break playing bad-boy Mike Barnes in “Karate Kid III.” He reprised this role on the fifth and sixth seasons of “Cobra Kai” on Netflix. “Martial arts has always been an important part of my life since I was probably about 14, 15 years old,” Kanan says. “The tenets of martial arts are something that I try to embody every day: courage, honesty, humility. … I look at my life as being very holistic and everything that I do, even though it may seem like they're very different pursuits, they're all interconnected.” His latest books are the series: “Way of the Cobra,” “Welcome to the Kumite” and “Way of the Cobra Couples,” co-written by his wife, Michele. His new food venture, Bad Boy Hot Sauce - flavors are Cobra Venom, Mango Madness and Red Pepper Punch - are also on-brand. “Bad boy Mike Barnes, bad boy karate, Bad Boy Hot Sauce,” he said. “It seemed like there was a good synergy there, and it's been really fun.” Kanan talks about his food philosophies and his favorite Jewish foods, Bad Boy Hot Sauce, martial arts, and living a life of humility and gratitude. He also shares a pasta recipe - pappardelle gemelle - from “The Modern Gentleman: Cooking and Entertaining with Sean Kanan,” along with the backstory. Get the recipe at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. “You break bread with somebody and have a great meal, [then] authenticity tends to come out: walls get dropped, commonalities get brought to the forefront,” he says. “I've always recognized that food has that power.” Learn more about Sean Kanan, at SeanKanan.actor and BadBoyEats.com. In this episode, we talk about the use of mirrors in the Karate Kid III and Cobra Kai as a parallel to the earlier movie. We talk about how to physically put up a permanent training mirror in your Dojo, Business, or Home. Then we examine the martial art practice or using mirrors in your training to help you improve your overall form and techniques and shadow boxing to help your targeting when training alone. In our mental training, you look at the mirror to "right size, ourselves" rather than thinking overly positive or negative about our appearance.

He went on to create two iconic characters, AJ QUARTERMAINE (GH) and DEACON SHARP (B&B/Y&R). Kanan's popularity as DEACON in Italy and ability to speak fluent Italian landed him on the Italian version of the popular show Dancing with the Stars where he lasted 9 weeks. On the comedy stage, Kanan has performed at some of the countries leading clubs including the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store, Dangerfield's, the Brokerage, Uncle Vinny's and other venues. There are not enough haunted attractions. There are haunts set up all over the country during October. And most cities have some type of ghost tour, but there are very few year round places that are devoted to horror. Blumhouse is doing something to fill that void. But can the studio responsible for The Exorcist: Believer and Truth or Dare really give horror audiences what they want? There are so many zombie movies to choose from that even the good ones tend to be forgotten. 28 Days Later is one of the strongest entries in the genre and its sequel is not too bad. For years there has been talk of a third entry. We talk about the latest news concerning the movie and whether we want to see it. There have been occasional resurgences, but teen slashers saw their greatest output during the 80s. The genre became so popular that it was even able to break into the mainstream. The decade also saw a number of knock offs that ended up becoming cult classics and fan favorites. Maybe we are too old for Departing Seniors. A familiar premise with a modern perspective, the film had us wondering what today's youth are really like. We are not sure if all of today's high school students are pieces of crap or if it is just a case of poor writing? Where do you draw the line between bravery and cowardice? One thing is for certain, the 2024 film is a great entry point for younger audiences looking to try out teen slashers. It does not have the cringier elements found in older movies while dealing with topical issues. It is also well acted and has a fun little story. There are some flaws along the way, but it is definitely worth checking out. If you ever wanted to see what would happen when Karate Kid III and Saved by the Bell met, then this is the show for you. Do you feel like you can't get to the next level of your success? Are obstacles, both internal and external, stopping you from achieving your dreams. If that's the case, then get ready for a powerful mindshift into excellence and authentic power. On Love University podcast, we learned valuable lessons of ultimate success from Sean Kanan, Emmy® winning producer, and talented actor and writer. Sean was the original “Bad Boy of Karate (Karate Kid III) and now appears on the hit series Cobra Kai. In his new role as “sensei of your mind,” teacher and author, Sean (wayofthecobra.com), reveals some of the most powerful “mind hacks” to get you on the path to ultimate joy, success, and fulfillment. Here's what we learned: *Become a Cobra: When you become a Cobra, you are the most authentic, self-aware, empathetic, strong, and confident human being you can possibly be. COBRA is an acronym that stands for Character, Optimization (taking the best action), Balance, Respect, and Abundance. When you focus on developing these qualities, the sky is the limit for your joy and success. *Welcome to the Kumite. In martial arts, Kumite stands for sparring as well as an epic battle. In the Kumite of your mind, your greatest opponent is “You” (your self-defeating thoughts: “I'm not good enough,” etc.). You can defeat the negative thought energies by being truly authentic, treating yourself and others with respect, and loving without expectation. *Choose Your Hard. Sean tells us that you need to choose the hard thing that will bring you the greatest results and contentment. Marriage is hard, but so is divorce (even harder). Working out is hard, but so is being overweight (even harder). Therefore, you need to decide if you want a little right pain now (eating junk food) and a lifetime of pleasure (great health), or a little pleasure now (tasty junk snack) or a lifetime of pleasure (poor health). The choice is clear; choose the little right pain now for a lifetime of pleasure. *Live by Your Creed. A creed is a set of beliefs or aims which guide your actions. In the Kenpo Karate creed, it says, “I come to you with only empty hands, I have no weapons. But should I be forced to defend myself, my principles, or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong, then here are my weapons, Karate, empty hands.” Sean's creed is to know who you are and never compromise your character. Don't act like someone you're not just to please others. Your greatest gift to the world is to be who you are and shine your talent and love for all to experience. During his interview on Love University, Sean explained how he almost lost his life as he was beginning work in Karate Kid III due to a medical emergency. From that near-death experience, he learned the value of humbleness, gratefulness, and never quitting. One of the most powerful lessons Sean learned was “You're enough.” By embracing your strengths and recognizing your weaknesses, you realize that you don't have to be anything different than who you already are. You don't have to push, chase, or convince anyone to do anything. You can simply be your truest nature and extend your loving energy to the world. That is your greatest joy and your greatest reward.

Gabriel JarretTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Gabriel Jarret. Gabe is an actor who has been in the business for more than 30 years. His very first film role was the lead in the cult classic film: REAL GENIUS! In this episode we chat about his experiences on that film, including some stories from the set. Next we move onto some of his memorable experiences on the set of Karate Kid III, and then we talk a bit about the Howard brothers (Clint and Ron). Finally, we chat about Gabe's THREE new projects! Ask Me To Dance is an upcoming film starring legendary actress Joyce DeWitt and Jesse Kove; written, directed, and also starring previous guest Tom Malloy. Already out is the Anne Heche led 13 Minutes; which is based on the true story of a small town devastated by tornados. Also upcoming is the Kate Bosworth series Bring On The Dancing Horses. Gabe is also a certified (and well respected) American Sign Language interpreter; so naturally that comes up as well.Follow Gabriel on social media:Insta: @GabrielJarretFB: Gabriel Jarret
