Top Docs: Award-Winning Documentary Filmmakers

Yance Ford's voice is key to his new documentary on Netflix, so here's how he describes “Power”:  “Driven to contain threats to social order, American policing has exploded in scope and scale over hundreds of years. Now it can be described by one word: ‘Power'”.   Yance's narrative is deeply rooted in a historical analysis of the roots of American policing–Indian removal, slave patrol, the anti-Labor municipal police of the 18th and 19th centuries; in his analysis, all driven by the protection of property.  But his focus ultimately resolves on the deeply personal effects that policing has on individuals and communities.    “Power” can now be streamed on Netflix.    Follow: @yford on twitter/X @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

It's Netflix Day here at Breakfast All Day -- totally by accident, that's just the way it shook out -- but that provides us with a wide variety of movies to review. We discussed the big new movie of the week, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," in an earlier episode, so make sure you check that out. Dave White was kind enough to help out on a couple of reviews while his husband, Alonso, was nursing a cold. First: "Hit Man," a sexy, modern-day noir from Richard Linklater which gives Glen Powell a great showcase of a performance. It's in theaters now and streaming on Netflix starting June 7. Then, we reviewed the empty sci-fi thriller "Atlas," starring Jennifer Lopez. JLo in space should be much more fun than this. It's streaming now on Netflix. Finally, Alonso and I reviewed the documentary "Power," from the Oscar-nominated director Yance Ford. It's about the history of police brutality, and it's a difficult but necessary watch. This one's also streaming now on Netflix. And of course, we did our weekly Movie News LIVE! segment, which Dave was kind enough to share his thoughts on. Among the topics we discussed were Morgan Spurlock, Scarlett Johansson, Riley Keough and our favorite LA movie theaters. Director Yance Ford discusses his new film, Power, with fellow Director Kristi Jacobson in a Q&A at the DGA theater in New York. In the conversation, he discusses the endeavor of going through hundreds of years of archival material, how he wanted to challenge the notion of traditional experts in a documentary by approaching people from police-impacted communities, and the post production journey that led him to include his narration in the documentary. The film investigates the American policing system, which has exploded in scope and scale over hundreds of years. Driven to contain threats to social order, now it can be described by one word: Power.

You Can’t Make This Up

From the slave patrols of the 1700s and the first publicly funded police departments of the 1800s to the uprisings of the 1960s and 2020s, the scope and scale of American law enforcement has expanded over time. Once a tool of the powerful to maintain social order, the police have now become a power unto themselves. The Netflix documentary film Power offers a visceral and immersive journey to demonstrate how we've arrived at this moment in history. It examines urgent questions about a growing and largely unchecked authority: who is policed, who is protected, who gets to decide, and why. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Yance Ford. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Power yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on.  Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

The Gambrell-Fowler family pose for a portrait. From left are Keith Gambrell, Gary Fowler, Cheryl Fowler, Troy Fowler, and Paris Fowler.                   Oprah Winfrey began her crusade to change the healthcare system when COVID-19 elevated our national awareness of health inequities in our country – a result of exacerbated health outcomes triggered by coronavirus infection across racial lines and the longstanding preexisting disparities that were already there. She launched The Color of Care education  campaign to prepare current and future doctors, nurses and medical professionals to play an active role in combating systemic racism in the delivery of healthcare, as well as provide others with the necessary tools to advocate for and empower patients who experience these inequities. The Color of Care movement for more equitable healthcare in America began when Oprah Winfrey was inspired to take action following the death of Gary Fowler. In this episode, we discuss the tragic and unnecessary death of Gary Fowler inflicted by a grossly negligent and racist healthcare system.  Multiple hospitals have the blood of Mr. Fowler on their hands; however, this is a story of hope in that his death started a national campaign for health equity. Oprah says the following about the death of Mr. Gary Fowler: “I read a story that haunted me…the story of the Fowler family. When Mr. Fowler became ill, three different hospitals turned him away. He went home, sat in his recliner, and died. I wondered how many different Gary Fowlers there are out there. What if I told you the biggest indicator of how long you are going to live is your zip code? What if access to lifesaving care for somebody that you love depended on the color of their skin? The COVID pandemic exposed a tragic divide in our healthcare system. We now need to stand up, and we need to do something about it. We need to change an entire system. This is something you start now! Together we can make it better.” The story of Gary Fowler's death is the focal point of the recent documentary, The Color of Care that premiered on the Smithsonian Channel earlier this summer. From executive producer, Oprah Winfrey, this new documentary chronicles how people of color suffer from systemically substandard healthcare in the United States and how COVID-19 exposed the tragic consequences of this inequity.  The Color of Care documentary traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery in the U.S. and continue today. Using moving testimony from those who lost loved ones to COVID-19 and frontline medical workers in overwhelmed hospitals, it interweaves expert interviews and powerful data to expose the devastating toll of embedded racism in our healthcare system. The Color of Care is produced by Harpo Productions with executive producers Oprah Winfrey, Terry Wood, and Catherine Cyr. The film is directed by OSCAR®-nominated and Emmy® award-winning director Yance Ford and produced by Kate Bolger and Yance Ford. After listening to this podcast, I urge you to watch the Color of Care to understand how the system was built, why it doesn't work for everyone, and how together we can make it better! Tiff struggles as she balances her personal life with school and her job, as well as Pete's exposure to sadomasochism and BDSM and how it gradually helps him become liberated in his life. NPR sports correspondent Tom Goldman spoke to a pioneering trans researcher who explains why — in most sports — trans women can compete fairly against cisgender women. Behind a recent spate of anti-trans state laws, LGBTQ communities see a new chapter in a familiar story: the culture wars that broke out in America in the 1990s. A new episode of the FX documentary miniseries Pride examines that era. It was directed by Academy-Award nominee Yance Ford, who tells NPR why the culture wars of the 90s are so relevant today. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 79: Yance Ford and Alan Jacobsen Yance Ford's powerful documentary, Strong Island, is about the murder of his brother, William Ford Jr. in 1992. The man who killed William, who is white, claimed self-defense when William, who was black and unarmed, confronted the man over shady car repairs. The decision by an all-white grand jury not to prosecute caused Yance's family even more devastation. The film conveys the personal agony and visceral grief in tight closeups on family, friends and Yance himself. Interestingly, at first Yance had a set of rules for how he wanted the documentary to be shot. Number one: he did not want to be on camera. But cinematographer Alan Jacobsen broke the rules, secretly shooting Yance from a corner one day while he was absorbed in looking at old photographs. They both saw how powerful it was to have Yance take a front-and-center role in the documentary. That intimacy proved to be the most important aspect of Strong Island, but the most difficult part for Yance. A first time director at the time, Yance felt fortunate to have the luxury of working on Strong Island for ten years as a two person team with Alan, and every creative decision of what the film would look and feel like was carefully and deliberately made. Alan used the camera as a tool to maintain the intimacy of the film. He would never pan or tilt, and he kept most shots tightly framed. Every shot was held for at least 60 seconds to hold the intensity and force the audience to watch, even if it became uncomfortable. Strong Island was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018 and also won a Creative Arts Emmy. Long Island or the Deep South? They might have more in common than you think. Angela picks up the true crime baton to join Bob on a sad tale where the attempt at justice barely exists. Yance Ford refuses to led the narrative of his late sibling, William Ford, be controlled by anybody else. When William was shot, unarmed, in a Long Island garage it seemed very clear very quickly that the shooter in this scenario was gonna get slapped on the wrist with a pillow. Long Island courts paint a narrative of William that Yance refuses to accept. A new look at a decades old tragedy. Sad as fuck. We maybe cried in this one. Our mascara really ran. Strong Island chronicles the arc of a family across history, geography and tragedy - from the racial segregation of the Jim Crow South to the promise of New York City; from the presumed safety of middle class suburbs, to the maelstrom of an unexpected, violent death. It is the story of the Ford family: Barbara Dunmore, William Ford and their three children and how their lives were shaped by the enduring shadow of race in America. In April 1992, on Long Island NY, William Jr., the Ford’s eldest child, a black 24 year-old teacher, was killed by Mark Reilly, a white 19 year-old mechanic. Although Ford was unarmed, he became the prime suspect in his own murder. A deeply intimate and meditative film, Strong Island asks what one can do when the grief of loss is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence, which can bind a family in an imitation of life, and a nation with a false sense of justice. Director Yance Ford, who is transgender, is a recipient of the Creative Capital Award, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, a Sundance Documentary Film Program Fellowship, and was among Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2011. For ten years Ford was privileged to work as Series Producer for the PBS showcase POV and where his curatorial work helped garner more than 16 Emmy nominations. Ford is also an architectural welder, and while at Modern Art Foundry he helped assemble the sculpture "Maman" by Louise Bourgeois—the series of three spiders exhibited at Rockefeller Center, and now on permanent display at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Director Yance Ford joins us for a conversation on grief, justice, racism, expectations, and the profound impact this 25-year long saga has had on his family.  For news and updates go to: strongislandfilm.com Opening Friday, September 15 IFC CENTER, NEW YORK IFC Center + Q&A with director Yance Ford - Friday 7:05 PM LAEMMLE MONICA FILM CENTER, SANTA MONICA Laemmle Monica Film Center, Santa Monica | California

This episode of the podcast - produced in association with Club des Femmes and The Barbican - focuses on the recent retrospective and celebration of the American Film Critic, Scholar and Curator B. Ruby Rich (@brrich1) entitled Bring Ruby Rich. The centrepiece of the podcast is a wide ranging interview with Ruby herself covering, among many things, her initial entry into film criticism, her promotion of the cinema as a social space, the legacy of her concept of New Queer Cinema, and the possibility of a political cinema in the digital age. We also interview Sophie Mayer (@tr0ublemayer) and Selina Robertson (@Clubdesfemmes), from Club Des Femmes who organised the event. And there is an in-depth Q&A hosted by Ruby and featuring Yance Ford (@yford) who discusses his first feature, to be released on Netflix in September, entitled Strong Island. An Introduction to B. Ruby Rich - Sophie Mayer - BFI Website "I am draw to the fire" B.Ruby Rich interview by Sophie Mayer - The F Word B Ruby Rich is one of America’s greatest contemporary film critics and academics. Currently working as a professor of Film and Digital Media at the University of California: Santa Cruz, Rich has spent much of her career, both within academia and industry, supporting and celebrating the marginalised voices of moving image. Alongside her academic work, Rich has been International Curator for the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival; has served on juries at the Sundance, Toronto, San Francisco, Oberhausen, Havana, Sydney, and Guadalajara film festivals; and is a member of the advisory board of the Provincetown Film Festival and previously of the Sundance Selection Committee. Rich was also the Director of the Electronic Media and Film Program at the New York State Council on the Arts in charge of supporting non-profit film, video, digital, and radio activities in New York City and throughout New York State in 1981-91. Yance Ford At 19 years old during his sophomore year at Hamilton University, Yance Ford’s life was unequivocally altered by the brutal murder of his older brother, William Ford Jr.  Originally working in photography, the devastating events surrounding his brother’s death and the refusal of a white jury to persecute William’s killer, galvanised Ford into becoming a filmmaker. Ford has spent most of his professional career, as a series producer for the PBS documentary programme P.O.V, deciding which submissions make it on to air.  After working as a producer for several years, Ford was incited by a conversation with a co-worker to start working on the film that would become Strong Island (2017). Strong Island (Yance Ford, 2017) Yance Ford’s debut feature is a deeply moving, complex film about a family murder, memory, injustice and the institutional racism that continues to pervade America’s legal, social and economic systems. Reminiscent of Errol Morris, Ford unforgettably delivers an investigation into resistant black masculinities, cis and trans, and meditations on raw personal grief. Many thanks to The Barbican for their support in the production of this episode.
