April 25, 2021 Morning Service. Faith. It's a word that we tend to toss around a good bit when we talk about our beliefs but when you consider what it means to be a Christian, faith is more than just what we believe. In fact it is much more than that.In this week's sermon, Pastor John Friederich discusses some important attributes of what our faith should look like as disciples of Christ. (Hebrews 11:1-6)
In this episode of The Lead, get to know the lesser-known facets of NTR from the Telugu leader's biographer Ramesh Kandula, who has penned the book, Maverick Messiah: A political biography of N T Rama Rao. L Subramani: A year after actor-politician Ronal Regan became the 40th president of the United States of America, a south Indian star contemplated entering politics. After a little hesitation, he learns the ropes quickly, tours across the state and does what is considered the unthinkable, which is becoming the chief minister of the state in just nine months after forming the political party. But there is a lot more to the character of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who is described as a secularist at heart, a mercurial personality and someone who carried the heft of the opposition against the mighty Congress across the country. We are talking about the life and personality of one of the greatest politicians of India because some weeks ago his biography has come out. Ramesh Kandula, the author, has produced what could be the most definitive account of NTR's life. Ramesh is joining us now in the podcast. Ramesh Kandula: Thank you. Subramani: It is sort of very unfair to restrict NTR's career and life as sort of a template for actors to transcend into politicians. There is something more and expansive about this man and you can, probably, describe us what makes this man great and how this formula cannot be repeated by every actor. Ramesh: There is quite a lot of difference between NTR and other actors who entered politics... To know more about this, tune in to the podcast. Sunday 21st February A beautiful Sunday to you in the name of Jesus. In the past few days, our focus has been on the different shades of love especially as it is in the Greek language. In English language word love is simply love but in the Greek language, there are seven different words that communicate the word Love. In the last few days, we have discussed six of these different expression. Today, we will discuss the last one called Agape. Agape means unconditional love, it is the type of love with no strings attached and it's a very special kind of love. Sometimes people feel that Agape is weak but his is not true. It is because we do not understand what Agape is. This kind of love can be tough. This is the kind of love that God has for us. The Bible says, there is no greater love than this for a man to lay down his life for his friend. The Bible says again that while we are still in sin, Christ died for us. Agape is the Love God has for us and He wants us to have this kind of love for one another. Agape love is the pinnacle of love. It is the summit of love. In Matthew 22 vs 37-39(NIV), the Bible says, 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.' If we check the story of prodigal son in Luke 15 we will see the power of Agape. The son had demanded for his inheritance from his father. Though he got it, he eventually squanders them on wasteful living. He returns to his dad in repentance and was forgiven. His father asked the servants to treat him well, clean him up and gave him the place of honour. His elder brother felt that his dad had not treat him as well as he was treating this “bad son” and was offended. The response he got from his father was astonishing. The father said, the love I have for you is not because of the things you do or the things you do not do. The fact that you are my children, I love you all unconditionally. That is agape! It is an unconditional love. A rich young rule came to Jesus and asked what could I do to inherit eternal life? The guy flaunted his credentials, I have been keeping on the law since I was young he said. The Bible says that Jesus looked at him and loved him. Jesus loved him in spite of his ignorance, he thought God's love and acceptance was by keeping the law. In love, Jesus told him, go and sell all that you have and give it to the poor. The love that we see in action here that made Jesus respond to the arrogant rich young ruler is agape! It is unconditional. It appears impossible humanly. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can practice it. I pray in the name of Jesus that God will help us to experience and express the love in its different shades at the right place at the right time and in the right proportion. I pray that the shades of love will beautiful our lives, families, organization and nations in the name of Jesus. I pray the power of love that never fails will be real for all of us in Jesus name. God to bless you. Enjoy your day.
Saturday 20th February A lovely Saturday to you in the name of Jesus. We thank God for today and we are still talking about the different shades of love. Today we will discuss the fifth and the sixth shades of love - Philautia and Ludas. We talked about Pragma and Storge yesterday and we said Pragma is an enduring love. It is a love that grows over time. Ludas means playful love. The issue with Pragma is that if care is not taken, enduring love it could become endurance of love. God doesn't want us to be in relationships where we are merely enduring ourselves He wants us to enjoy our love relationships especially in marriage, that is why Ludas, the fun and play love is very important. Ludas is they kind of love people in a love relationship mean when they say they have butterflies in their tummy or they talked about their heart racing with excitement or they feel the good chemistry between them. It is the type of love where you are still dating your wife after many years in marriage. It comes with open and public display of affection. You can hold hands, laugh and have fun together. That is what Ludas is about. In Genesis 26:6, the Bible says regarding Isaac and Rebekah, And it comes to pass, when the days have been prolonged to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through the window, and saw and behold, Isaac was playing with his wife Rebekah. Let read same scripture from NKJV version: Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife. The type of love we see here is Ludas. It didn't matter that Isaac and Rebekah had been married for years, they were still able to play together show love for each other publicly. No matter how old your marriage is, do not endure love. Enjoy love in each others company. Philautia on the other hand is love of self that results in a healthy self esteem or self worth. We have discussed how good it is to love other people. However, it is also very important to love yourself. The Bible says in Mark 12 :31 (NLT), “The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these.” It is important to love yourself. Yes you should to love God and your neighbour but don't neglect yourself - love ourselves. You must treat yourself well, have good health and healthy self-esteem. Respect yourself. It is important. Daniel and his friend were taken as captives to Babylon and because they were from the royal lineage he wanted them to be trained in the Babylonian way and serve in his kingdom. He gave his offices instructions to ensure Daniel and his friends ate the same food from the kings table. Daniel knew the food was dedicated to the Babylonians gods before preparing them and they were not as health as the strict diet they followed as Jews, so he decided not to eat the food.. The Bible says that Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself with king's food ( Dan. 1:8) Daniel knew eating the kings food would not help his relationship with God and it wasn't good for his health. It take some self love to live well and eat well and Daniel obviously had this for himself. Part of true love is to truly love self. Some people believe it is wrong to love themselves, no It is not, it is not evil. A healthy and balanced love for yourself is an important aspect of love that you must never forget. God bless you and have a great weekend.
Thursday 18th February A lovely Thursday to you in the name of Jesus. It's a lovely day and we are still talking to you about love. All through this month of February, we've been talking about love and we've been talking about the different aspects of love, the meaning of love, and the person of love. Yesterday, we spoke about the 7 kinds of love that we see in the Greek language and that is also captured in the Bible and today we begin to talk about these different kinds of love again in details. So today we will talk about two of them. We will talk about the “Eros” and “Phileo.” “Eros” is the general love people talk about. It is the romantic love; it is the love that is full of passion, intense sexual desire for someone else. It's that passionate feeling that sometimes, if you don't know how to control it can get you into trouble. This is what Eros is all about. So a lot of times when we hear most of the songs about love, power of love and the show of passion and ecstasy, they are usually talking about Eros but in the English, like we said yesterday, they are all communicated as love. Eros can be a dangerous thing when not kept under control and within the confines of marriage. There is a painful story in the Bible that show how terrible Eros can be when not practice as God intended. 2 Samuel 13: 12 - 15 (NLT) 12 “No, my brother!” she cried. “Don't be foolish! Don't do this to me! Such wicked things aren't done in Israel. 13 Where could I go in my shame? And you would be called one of the greatest fools in Israel. Please, just speak to the king about it, and he will let you marry me.”14 But Amnon wouldn't listen to her, and since he was stronger than she was, he raped her. 15 Then suddenly Amnon's love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. “Get out of here!” he snarled at her. Amnon had spoken to his friend on how much love he had for his sister, Tamar and how he was so much in love and love sick. He devised a plan with his friend pretending he was sick and he asked that his half-sister Tamar would bring food for him. In that process, he raped her and the so called love he had for her was immediately turned to hatred. Why? It wasn't real love; it was just the passion of Eros and Eros like we said is just that sexual desire and once the passion was gone, the love was and it turned to hatred. The other love we want to talk about is “Phileo” and this one is the friendship love; the fondness we feel for people. It's that affection which is devoid of the sexual desire or passion of Eros. It is just that love, that admiration, that desire you have for somebody to do well in life. This was the kind of love we saw between Jonathan and David. Some people that didn't understand the different shades of love have insinuated the possibility of sexual passion but that is absolutely untrue. They just loved themselves and wanted to see each other do well. It was the Phileo kind of love, this was the same kind of love Jesus had for Lazarus. In John 11: 36 (NLT) it say this; 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” Jesus went at the grave of Lazarus and when people saw Him weeping, they said; “see how much he loved him.” The love they were talking about there is “Phileo.” So there is the Phileo and Eros and they are both shades of love. We need to begin to ask ourselves what kind of “love” we are talking about when we talk about love. God bless you. Enjoy the rest of your day!
Friday 19th February Praise God! We thank God for this lovely Friday. I pray it would be a wonderful weekend for every one of us in the name of Jesus. We are still continuing our discussion on the different shades or expressions of love. We spoke about the 7 kinds of love recognised by the Greeks which we also see their instances in the bible, and yesterday we began to look at the different shades of love one by one. Today we will talk about Storge and Pragma. Storge is what we can call familiar or the family love. It is something close to Phieo, but not exactly. Phileo is the love between friends but Storge goes deeper than that. It is the love between family. The love that parents have for their children and the children for their parents. We saw this kind of love when the prodigal son experienced when he met his father. When the prodigal son demanded for his inheritance and messed up his opportunity, his father still took him back because of Storge. We see Storge demonstrated again when Jarius. He was the leader of synagogue and normally he should not be seeing Identifying with Jesus not to talk of bowing to Him publicly. But because of the love he had for his daughter, he humbled himself and met Jesus publicly worshipping Him. It was the love of the parent for his dying child that made him do that. It was Storge the family love. (Mark 5 vs 22-23) The next type of we will talk about love is Pragma. The word pragmatic was derived from the Greek word Pragma. This type of love is enduring or lasting. It is the love that grows over time. It is the love that develops between a husband and wife after many years of marriage. It is not the honeymoon kind of love. It is much deeper than that. This type of love endures because it's been tested over time. Imagine when you have been married for 20 years or you are still able to maintain your love for each other. This kind of love we see expressed between Abraham and Sarah. As they grow older, the love they have for each other made them protect each other. In Genesis chapters 11 and 20 we see how they protect each in the face of threat from King Abimelech and King of Egypt. These kings wanted Abraham's wife. Abraham told Sarah to tell people that she was his sister. It was the pragmatic thing for Abraham and Sarah to act in that way to preserve their lives and love. In Jacob and Leah story, we saw the same thing. Leah wasn't Jacob's wife of love, it was Rachel. But after Rachel's death, the Bible talked about Jacob and Leah keeping themselves in love till the end of their days. After the death of Rachel, he grew to love Leah and they stayed that way till the end of their lives. Pragma is a type of love that grows over time. It is enduring love. What shade of love are you expressing or experiencing? Pragma? Eros? Storge? Or Phileo? God bless you and have a lovely weekend.
Wednesday 17th February 2021 A lovely day to you in the name of Jesus. We thank God for this lovely Wednesday and we pray that it will be a winning Wednesday for you in the name of Jesus. We are still talking about The Different Shades of love and by that we mean the different manifestations or expressions of love. There are different roles we play and in each we relate with people that we need to show love but we cannot love everybody the same way. It is frustration and you're setting yourself up for trouble when you think you can love everybody the same way. But once you know the love demands of different things and you give what each role demands then you are good. Yesterday we discussed “Love” in Greek and in English. We discovered that the English language has just one word for “Love” and that's everything. But in the Greek there are different meanings to love and we want to look at a few of that today. Paul in Ephesians 3: 18 - 19 (NCV) said; “And I pray that you and all God's holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ's love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. Christ's love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.” I pray you will be able to know that love, then you can be filled with the fullness of God. Christ love is expansive; it's bigger than the whole “I love you” we say and the Greeks have different expressions of this word called love. And reading the Bible, we will find out that there are different languages communicating the different kinds of love. The first one we see in the Bible today is the word “Eros” and it simply means romantic, passionate or sexual love. The other one is “philia” (some people call it phileo) and it simply means affectionate love or the love you have for friends. Another one is called “Storge” which simply means familiar love or the love we have in the context of family; the love of parents to children. Another one is “Pragma”. From this word we get the word “pragmatic” and it means enduring love; practical love, love that we develop over time. Another one is “Philautia” which simply means self love, self compassion or self esteem. And the sixth one is “Ludas”. It simply means playful love. The final one we have which is the popular one is “Agape”. We have these seven different kinds of love and we see expressions of them in the Bible. All these kinds of love we can show to the people we relate with. Like we said, God doesn't expect us to have the same expression of love with everybody but if we know the different kinds of love then we know the different kind of expressions we have and then we know the one we need to give to the different expressions. I pray God will give us wisdom that will not muddle things up in the name of Jesus and we will give to every relationship the due love it demands. God bless you. Enjoy the rest of your day!
Tuesday 16th February A lovely Tuesday to you in Jesus name. We are still talking about love and this week our focus is on The Different Shades of Love. Love has shades and what do we mean by that? We means there are different expressions of love and that's because we have different relationships with different people. And there are different expressions of your person. The Bible says different things about the Person of God. For instance, God is love, God is holy and God is a consuming fire but it is the same God. Dr Myles Monroe said "When the purpose or the intent of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable". When we do not know the love commitments or demands that the different relationship needs, then we can get into trouble because we can abuse ourselves or abuse relationships. You need to understand the purpose of each relationship and the love demand that it requires. We must be careful to separate the love demand of the person from the purpose of our relationship with the person. Wisdom is to know the shade of love to express to the relationship with respect to purpose and not person. Another thing we need to understand is the limitations of English language with respect to expressing some words. The New Testament of the Bible was written in Greek and the word “love” in Greek has a number of meanings. An example is in John 21 : 15 - 17 (KJV) 15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. In this passage, Jesus spoke about “love,” Peter responded using the word “love” too, but in the Greek the words used for 'love" are not the same. The word Jesus was using was the word “Agape” which is different from the word Peter was using which was "Phileo", but in English they are both called love. Jesus was talking about love- Agape and Peter was talking about love - Phileo. Peter finally got angry when Jesus decided to use the word “phileo” for him rather the word “agape” He had used earlier because He knew it was a different shade of love. He knew Phileo was a lower shade of love to Agape. In the Greek there are different shades of love and we can see the different shades of this love expressed in the Bible. As we continue this week, we will to look at the different kinds of love the Bible talks about and the commitments required for each. Understand this, God's love for you is the highest kind of love because you and I are the crown of his creation. May the love of God make a difference in our life in Jesus name. God bless you. Enjoy the rest of your day.
