“My name is Lester Burnham. This is my neighborhood; this is my street; this is my life. I am 42 years old; in less than a year I will be dead.” These opening lines set the stage for American Beauty, a turn-of-the-20th-century picture about the beauty…and dysfunction…of suburban American life. As Lester awakens to the changes he needs to make to his everyday life, his wife and daughter follow similar journeys, along with his mysterious next-door neighbor. As Lester's death day looms, the culprits seem to multiply. Part drama, part comedy, and all dysfunctional does American Beauty still deserve to be seen? “It always works out?” “Why?” “I don't know; it's a mystery.” A play-within-a-play, or rather a play-beyond-a-play, Shakespeare in Love tells the fictional tale of the writing of another fictional tale as a young, upstart Shakespeare struggles to create a new comedy all while living a real-life romance/tragedy in the real world. With an all-star 1990s cast, and copious Shakespeare references and Easter eggs, Shakespeare in Love combines the forbidden love with a Finnes brother from English Patient with the star-crossed lovers of Titanic, all mixed with a Victorian setting. Largely seen as a surprise in 1998, has Shakespeare proved to be a show for all time? "I've always thought it was out of character for David to drink anything as corrupt as whiskey.""Out of character for him to be murdered too."Rope tells the story of two friends, Brandon and Phillip, who set out to put a horrific experiment to the test: Is it possible to murder purely for the sake of danger and killing? As the two do away with their friend David, they proceed to then host a party with their mutual friends (and David's family) all while the dead body remains hidden in the room. Filmed in a "single" shot, this Hitchcock experiment ramps the tension to 11 for the full 80-minute runtime. Take a look at this bonus episode to wrap up the year. See you in 2022!
"I've killed women and children. I've killed everything that walks or crawls At one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned." Unforgiven, the Clint Eastwood anti-Western from 1992 tells the tale of William Munny, reformed outlaw who is brought back into the assassin game after learning of an unprovoked attack on a young woman. As Munny (Eastwood) struggles with the choice to return to his old ways, Sheriff Bill Dagget (Gene Hackman) takes whatever steps he can to keep the peace in his town…even if that means getting his hands dirty. A story of conviction and personal codes colliding, this film shows the consequences of two men who feel no need to search for forgiveness…and have none to give. Will the film be worthy of your time? Welcome to a special Cinema Cinemetery Double Episode as we close out the 1980s and begin the 1990s with Driving Miss Daisy and Dances With Wolves. Here we'll be exploring two films which couldn't be more different; one exploring racial differences in the mid 20th century south and the other examing the plight of the Lakota Sioux on the American plains. Nevertheless, both movies combine 80s drama with 90s schmaltz for some interesting conversation.Should these films be a part of your next double-header? “The Emperor has been a prisoner in his own palace since the day that he was crowned, and has remained a prisoner since he abdicated. But now he's growing up, he may wonder why he's the only person in China who may not walk out of his own front door. I think the Emperor is the loneliest boy on Earth.” 1987's The Last Emperor tells the tale of Pu Yi, the eponymous last emperor of China. Following his childhood, abdication, and eventual alignment with Imperial Japan to regain his power, the movie reveals some never-before-seen locations from China's Forbidden City and a narrative as Shakespearean as it is historical. As Harold Abrahams struggles to navigate being Jewish in the early 20th century England, all while training professionally in an age that only respects amateurism, Rev. Eric Liddell debates whether to serve God from the pulpit, or on the track. “I’m not a f’real cowboy, but I’m one helluva stud!” The year is 1969 and movies have changed more in the past decade than 1929-1939. Midnight Cowboy tells the story of two misfits trying to make their way in an unforgiving world. Joe Buck ventures to New York City with the “dream” of making it as a male hustler, but finds himself completely clueless in a world that has long since passed by the ideals of his youth. His best/only companion is a sickly con-man named Rizzo who’s skilled at stealing just enough to keep them alive. A hugely unconventional film, Midnight Cowboy pulls no punches with it’s content as it embraces the gritty “New Hollywood” tone. Does it still deserve a look, or should you keep “walking here!”? “Sol: a needle pulling thread. La: a…uh…note to follow sol.” It’s not always Shakespeare, but The Sound of Music keeps the lyrical tradition going with this 1965 musical. “May God grant me vengeance. I pray you live until I return.” While not the most conventional way to say farewell to an old acquaintance, this remark by Judah Ben Hur to his childhood friend definitely makes sense under the circumstances. Judah Ben Hur must now use all his will and focus to stay alive and not only avenge this wrong, but find his mother and sister. “I hate the British! You are defeated but you have no shame!” Welcome to the River Kwai; as captured British soliders adjust to life in a Japanese prison camp, Lt. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) struggles to maintain British order in a place of chaos. Meanwhile, Japanese Colonel Saito, desperate to get a bridge constructed on schedule, fails miserably to motivate his captive crew. This story of war, duty, perspective, and service both honors and critiques the rigid structure by which officers and soldiers must hold themselves, even in impossible circumstances.
