In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. “BESS FLOWERS & FRANKLYN FARNUM: QUEEN & KING OF THE EXTRAS” - 4/13/2026 (135) Actors BESS FLOWERS and FRANKLYN FARNUM were absolute legends of the “blink and you'll miss them” world. They weren't headliners — in fact, they often were not credited or even noticed, but honestly, that's what makes them so fascinating—their careers quietly stitched together the fabric of classic cinema. They were Extras. Without them and other extras like them, all those iconic movie moments would feel a lot less alive. Their careers spanned decades and thousands of films. They became, in their own way, silent witnesses to the evolution of Hollywood from the silent era through the golden age and into the modern period. So this week, we're going to explore the lives and careers of BESS FLOWERS and FRANKLYN FARNUM, examining not only their astonishing productivity but also their unique roles within the Hollywood system. By looking closely at the films in which they can best be seen, we gain a deeper appreciation for their contributions and the overlooked artistry of background performers. We sat down with Sergeant (Ret.) Bert "Maverick" Gonzalez to discuss his compelling new book, The Real Greatest Show on Earth. After dedicating 37 years to the Miami-Dade Police Department, serving in roles from narcotics to crime scene investigations and training over 25,000 officers, Gonzalez offers an unprecedented look behind the badge.Gonzalez pulls no punches, describing his book as the "nitty-gritty reality" of police work, far removed from TV sensationalism or murder mysteries. The Real Greatest Show on Earth explores the full spectrum of a cop's career:The Terror and Tragedy: He reveals the nightmares and haunting experiences officers face daily, seeing things "no one should ever see."The Humor and Humanity: Gonzalez also shares the rare, humorous, and deeply human moments on the street—those times when officers are genuinely thanked or encounter situations "no genius of a comedic mind could ever imagine."Discover the world through the eyes of a Bronze Medal of Valor recipient and highly respected national police instructor, who shows the "good, the bad, and the ugly" of life under the "circus tent" of law enforcement.Interested in hearing more about Sgt. Today on Mea Culpa, I'm joined by Loren Piretra, political content creator and host of The Loren Piretra Show on YouTube, for a deep dive into Trump's latest power grabs. We break down the millions who took to the streets this weekend for the No Kings Day protests and how Trump and JD Vance tried to distract the nation with a hollow military parade. We also unpack how farmers are getting crushed under Trump's reckless tariffs, the ongoing government shutdown, and the National Guard federalizations that have civil rights advocates sounding the alarm. Welcome back for the conclusion of my interview with Sgt. Bert “Maverick” Gonzalez. Sergeant Maverick served the South Florida community for 37 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department, retiring in 2020. His career included assignments in uniform patrol, narcotics, airport and port security, and crime scene investigations. Following 9/11, he became a national leader in port security operations. A highly respected police instructor, Gonzalez has trained over 25,000 officers in areas such as crisis intervention, active shooter response, major scene management, tactical driving, and crowd control. A recipient of the Bronze Medal of Valor and two Life-Saving Awards, he has earned over 60 commendations throughout his career. Gonzalez is the author of The Real Greatest Show on Earth and hosts Sgt. Maverick–The Podcast, where he discusses policing, politics, and life. Please enjoy the conclusion of my interview with Sgt. Maverick. This week in our Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view we watched one of her best-known films, In a Lonely Place (1950), directed by Nicholas Ray and co-starring Humphrey Bogart, alongside the unpromising Cecil B. DeMille circus drama The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). This may be the only time you find these two movies discussed together with roughly equal enthusiasm. Ray's portrait of a romance doomed by male violence may have psychological perception and stylish writing, but DeMille's Technicolor spectacle has a clown with a dark secret (played by Jimmy Stewart no less), Cornel Wilde shirtless in tight pants, a train wreck, the blood transfusion bonding trope, and of course, a love-crazed Nazi dangling an elephant's foot over Gloria Grahame's face. Unhinged Bogart meets unhinged DeMille, brought together by our Acteur giving restrained performances as wary observers. Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: IN A LONELY PLACE (1950) [dir. In an age where people started to stay home to watch television and listen to the radio, and attendance in movie theatres was waning, big spectacles were the way to get people interested in cinema again. Also, the resurgence of the circus was on the rise. Cecil B. De Mille, known for directing huge extravaganzas, decided to combine the two and make this huge epic film about a story with the big top, and all its glory, as the backdrop. The Greatest Show on Earth was a huge blockbuster. It went on to win the top prize at the Oscars for 1952. Critics and audiences for the most part have felt that time has not been good to this film ... feeling that the spectacle does not compensate for what is lacking in the script. In retrospect, did it really deserve to win the Best Picture Academy Award?Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about The Greatest Show on Earth, as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1952.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHeart RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, BlueSkyShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.com or jackferdman@gmail.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating. Robert takes us back to a moment in market history that looks uncannily like today and explains why we might be heading into another sugar-high moment for stocks. He unpacks the setup behind what he calls the “stimulus wave,” the key signs he's watching to stay ahead of the crowd, and how he's positioning now. Plus, a listener asks whether it's time to take profits on a big winner and Robert breaks down how he thinks about valuation when a stock keeps climbing.
On episode 282 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello as well as AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Jay Ledbetter, Josh Parham, and Karen Peterson to go back 10 years and take a look at the 88th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2015. The team take a trip back to just a decade ago where the Oscars were at a moment of reflection as the #OscarsSoWhite movement rang loudly as the nominations didn't fully show the diverse, talented artists that made the year in film so strong. Chris Rock (whose jokes this night would spark the later controversy for “The Slap” at the 2022 ceremony) hosted the ceremony and highlighted perfectly that the Academy had a long way to go to show the world that they can change and allow everyone the chance to be nominated and win an Oscar. For the telecast, it was a night dominated by Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant in the technical categories, Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning an Oscar, a cool, shocking upset in Best Visual Effects, and Spotlight winning the top prize, along with just Best Original Screenplay, making it the first film since The Greatest Show On Earth to win Best Picture while only winning one other award. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1980, briefly discuss talk about Spotlight as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of eight nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 3h14m. We will be back next week for a review of the new A24 drama, Warfare, as well as talk about some of the best war films of the decade/century so far. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

From deep in the archives, Michael's conversation with Richard Dawkins, author of "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution (A Brief History of the Natural World)." In the New York Times bestselling book, he launches a fierce counterattack against proponents of "Intelligent Design." "Intelligent Design" is being taught in our schools; educators are being asked to "teach the controversy" behind evolutionary theory. There is no controversy. Dawkins sifts through rich layers of scientific evidence—from living examples of natural selection to clues in the fossil record; from natural clocks that mark the vast epochs wherein evolution ran its course to the intricacies of developing embryos; from plate tectonics to molecular genetics—to make the airtight case that "we find ourselves perched on one tiny twig in the midst of a blossoming and flourishing tree of life and it is no accident, but the direct consequence of evolution by non-random selection." Original air date 23 November 2009. The book was published on 22 September 2009.

We often say we're not sure what we just saw but it really applies to Super Bowl win number 3 for Patrick Mahomes and this Chiefs Dynasty Era. Millions of people and most of the players on the field didn't know the overtime rules as the clock was running out and Mahomes was tossing the ball to Mecole Hardman to win the game. It was drama times ten in a game dominated for 3 quarters by the defenses. Then, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan must have thought he was in the regular season by taking the ball after winning the coin toss... handing Mahomes all the fourth downs he may need to kick the Niners tail. And that, he did. What a win, what a moment, let's have a parade. Stan Weber is here to break down the closest of matchups that in the end swung red because of one player.
