Dana and Tom revisit In the Heat of the Night (1967): directed by Norman Jewison, written by Sterling Silliphant, score by Quincy Jones, starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, and Lee Grant.Plot Summary: In the Heat of the Night (1967) is a taut, incisive drama that explores the collision of justice and racial prejudice in the Deep South. Sidney Poitier stars as Virgil Tibbs, a Philadelphia detective who reluctantly teams up with a bigoted small-town sheriff, played by Rod Steiger, to solve a murder in Sparta, Mississippi.Director Norman Jewison builds a gripping procedural around the tension between these two men, each forced to confront his own biases in the face of a shared goal. With its evocative cinematography, unforgettable moments of confrontation, and Quincy Jones' soulful score, In the Heat of the Night transcends the confines of a murder mystery. It is a film of deep moral resonance, one that holds a mirror to America's struggles with race, power, and reconciliation—while delivering a narrative as electrifying as it is humane.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome01:14 Cast and Recognition for In the Heat of the Night03:23 Relationship(s) to In the Heat of the Night07:21 What is In the Heat of the Night About?14:13 Plot Summary for In the Heat of the Night17:06 First Break17:55 Ask Dana Anything18:40 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy22:05 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance25:07 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty34:07 Second Break34:17 In Memoriam35:20 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness41:49 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability44:23 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total46:12 Remaining Questions for In the Heat of the Night48:44 Where the List Stands at the End of Season 552:54 Remaining Thoughts for Season 558:32 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/in-the-heat-of-the-night-1967For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/in-the-heat-of-the-night-1967-revisitFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:In the Heat of the Night, race relations, Sidney Poitier, film analysis, classic films, podcast, movie review, Best Picture, 1967, cultural impactRonny Duncan Studios

This episode is chock-full of experimental goodness and actually feels like the culmination of most of the experiments surrounding "the blob" that came before it! Plus: rockets, flamethrowers, and tesla guns...need we say more?

It is not often that you stumble across the first of anything these days. But through the course of this episode, we learned a fun fact. This race was the first 100k race distance to be held in the state of Alabama. In the Heat of the Night 100k takes place in the Talladega Forest, in Anniston, Alabama. Not only is the first 100k in Alabama, but, as the name implies, what sets this 100k apart from others is that it is run at night. The course is a looped course and runners will complete 4 - 15+ mile loops on a surface of maintained dirt and gravel forest roads. You have 18 hours to complete the 100k, and the elevation gain is a little over 7900 feet. Interested? The Daily Dog is your home for Underdog Fantasy picks. Each day host Britton Hess gives you his favorite Underdog plays for MLB, tennis, UFC, NFL and more! Subscribe for your Daily Dog! Today's show features Underdog Picks for Friday in Major League Baseball and the Stanley Cup Final. First I target the now healthy Trea Turner in the Phillies matchup with the Diamondbacks and struggling starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. The DBacks thrower got back on track vs the White Sox in his last start, but 90+ degrees at 6:40 PM in Philly could be a recipe for disaster, and an opportunity for Trea Turner. Next I cool things down with a pick on the ice. Panthers goalie Sergey Bobrovsky was the people's champ after three games in this series. But in the last two games it has been all Edmonton and Connor McDavid, early AND often. I have a pick on the first period in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Lastly I go to the night cap where Angels starting pitcher, Patrick Sandoval is taking on the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. The lefty has allowed a ton of hits in most of his starts, but this Dodgers lineup does not have righty Mookie Betts. Can the boys in blue do damage without their regular leadoff man vs a pitcher who has allowed 6+ hits in 3 of his last 5 starts? These three plays together yield a 4.86 multiplier. Lets get a winner heading into the weekend! At the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement", named after The New Negro, a 1925 anthology edited by Alain Locke. The movement also included the new African American cultural expressions across the urban areas in the Northeast and Midwest United States affected by a renewed militancy in the general struggle for civil rights, combined with the Great Migration of African American workers fleeing the racist conditions of the Jim Crow Deep South, as Harlem was the final destination of the largest number of those who migrated north. Noel catches up with Anne-Marie Johnson. The actress is perhaps best known for her roles as Nadine in What's Happening Now! and Althea Tibbs in In the Heat of the Night. She was a cast member in the final season of In Living Color. She had the scene-stealing performance as Cherry in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and starred alongside Robert Townsend in Hollywood Shuffle. In 2005, Anne became the first African-American elected vice president of the Screen Actors Guild.

Episode 38: IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT 1967 was a volatile year, and its Best Picture winner, Norman Jewison's In the Heat of the Night was a volatile picture in many ways. Rod Steiger plays a small-town Mississippi police chief who reluctantly accepts the help of a Philadelphia detective played by Sidney Poitier to solve the murder of a local VIP. The detectives clash with each other, but more significantly, clash with the town's deep-seated racism. It dealt with hot-button issues in its day. Join us as we discuss how relevant it still is today. It ranks at number 32 on our Best Picture Countdown.* Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. The Worthy boys are investigating the streets of Sparta, Mississippi to discover who murdered a local wealthy businessman as we're discussing In the Heat of the Night. The racially fueled film stars Sidney Poitier as a Philadelphia Detective stuck outside of his jurisdiction and Rod Steiger as the local racist police chief in charge of the murder case. Tune in to hear us analyze the shocking moments that stunned American audiences of 1967; moments like when our Black protagonist, Detective Tibbs slaps a white man marking a first in Hollywood American cinema! The 1967 Oscars were originally scheduled for April 8th but the awards were postponed to two days later due to the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This travesty would continue to spark debates over the civil rights movement and films like In The Heat of the Night were used as a shining example of how to examine this American issue. This week we're paying tribute to the icon Sidney Poitier, by revisiting one of our favorite episodes. Original Airdate: 9/3/2015 Well, this happened. Keegan-Michael Key showed up like a burst through the comedic heavens and landed in our podcast basement to record the most intense, hilarious, and in depth discussion of the classic Sidney Poitier flick 'In The Heat of The Night.' Key had the knowledge and energy of ten men, which made it impossible to edit a minute of this. I don't think you'll mind. Maybe Black Men Can't Jump in Hollywood, but they did land one of the most dynamic comedic talents of a generation and he truly brought the noise, son! If you're interested in acting, film, history, the craft, the biz, the culture of representing black men on screen, or really just thinking critically about the challenges and triumphs of Mr. Sidney Poitier and the effect he had on actors, well then we got you son.
