We're under a strict “return to office” mandate as we look at two films where the danger is in the workplace: THE TEMP (1993) starring Timothy Hutton and Lara Flynn Boyle trying to make that cheddar in the world of cookies, and DISCLOSURE (1994) where Michael Douglas and Demi Moore deal with Malaysian supply chain issues.

Sean Penn is a powerhouse film performer capable of intensely moving work, who has gone from strength to strength during a colorful film career, and who has drawn much media attention for his stormy private life and political viewpoints. Sean Justin Penn was born in Los Angeles, California, the second son of actress Eileen Ryan (née Annucci) and director, actor, and writer Leo Penn. His brother was actor Chris Penn. His father was from a Lithuanian Jewish/Russian Jewish family, and his mother is of half-Italian and half Irish descent. Penn first appeared in roles as strong-headed or unruly youths such as the military cadet defending his academy against closure in Taps (1981), then as fast-talking surfer stoner Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Fans and critics were enthused about his obvious talent and he next contributed a stellar performance alongside Timothy Hutton in the Cold War spy thriller The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), followed by a teaming with icy Christopher Walken in the chilling At Close Range (1986). The youthful Sean then paired up with his then wife, pop diva Madonna in the woeful, and painful, Shanghai Surprise (1986), which was savaged by the critics, but Sean bounced back with a great job as a hot-headed young cop in Colors (1988), gave another searing performance as a US soldier in Vietnam committing atrocities in Casualties of War (1989) and appeared alongside Robert De Niro in the uneven comedy We're No Angels (1989). However, the 1990s was the decade in which Sean really got noticed by critics as a mature, versatile and accomplished actor, with a string of dynamic performances in first-class films. Almost unrecognisable with frizzy hair and thin rimmed glasses, Penn was simply brilliant as corrupt lawyer David Kleinfeld in the Brian De Palma gangster movie Carlito's Way (1993) and he was still in trouble with authority as a Death Row inmate pleading with a caring nun to save his life in Dead Man Walking (1995), for which he received his first Oscar nomination. Sean then played the brother of wealthy Michael Douglas, involving him in a mind-snapping scheme in The Game (1997) and also landed the lead role of Sgt. Eddie Walsh in the star-studded anti-war film The Thin Red Line (1998), before finishing the 1990s playing an offbeat jazz musician (and scoring another Oscar nomination) in Sweet and Lowdown (1999). The gifted and versatile Sean had also moved into directing, with the quirky but interesting The Indian Runner (1991), about two brothers with vastly opposing views on life, and in 1995 he directed Jack Nicholson in The Crossing Guard (1995). Both films received overall positive reviews from critics. Moving into the new century, Sean remained busy in front of the cameras with even more outstanding work: a mentally disabled father fighting for custody of his seven-year-old daughter (and receiving a third Oscar nomination) for I Am Sam (2001); an anguished father seeking revenge for his daughter's murder in the gut-wrenching Clint Eastwood-directed Mystic River (2003) (for which he won the Oscar as Best Actor); a mortally ill college professor in 21 Grams (2003) and a possessed businessman in The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004). Follow the homies Cam (Cameron Cox) and Dylan (Dylan Hernandez) two former AMC Theater employees as they take a nostalgic trip back in time to rewatch films that mean the most to them! Today we do things a little different and discuss a show! The 2018 Netflix smash hit "The Haunting of Hill House" With Special Guest ANDREW GARCIA!! The Haunting of Hill House is an American supernatural horror drama television miniseries created and directed by Mike Flanagan, produced by Amblin Television and Paramount Television for Netflix, and serves as the first entry in The Haunting anthology series. It is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. The plot alternates between two timelines, following five adult siblings whose paranormal experiences at Hill House continue to haunt them in the present day, and flashbacks depicting events leading up to the eventful night in 1992 when the family fled from the mansion. The ensemble cast features Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the siblings in adulthood, with Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as parents Olivia and Hugh Crain, and Timothy Hutton appearing as an older version of Hugh. Our Political Thriller season continues with writer and actor Jon Millstein joining to discuss the 1985 espionage true story THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN starring Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn. Directed by John Schlesinger, the movie tells the fact-based tale of two disillusioned friends who embark on a dangerous hustle selling United States security secrets to the Soviet Union. With a whip smart script by Steven Zaillian (his first-ever produced) and revelatory performances from Hutton and Penn, THE FALCON AND SNOWMAN received decent reviews upon release, but was only a muted box office success. In recent years, FALCON has yet to catch a second wind, but is due for a critical reappraisal. Listen in on our discussion of this underrated espionage classic that takes diversions into Megalopolis, the Vice Presidential debate, Alfred Tennyson, Skibidi Toilet, Levitated Mass, Boss Baby, the Winter Soldier and much, much more! THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN is currently available to stream for free on Hoopla and PlutoTV.

Honestly, when listener Eric commissioned "Ordinary People," we were worried the episode would be dry, academic and morose. Instead, this 1980 Oscar winner led to uncontrollable laughs. The quality certainly is there: A Robert Redford-directed drama starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton. But you know how it goes when the Shat Boys get rolling. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores Japanese breakfast, whether you can save French toast, "the three lives," and what real therapy looks like. Gene complains that he can't relate to the problems of the rich, and Dick explains why he wants to try everything on the menu. Front Row Classics is taking a look at the 1980 Oscar winner for Best Picture this week. Brandon is joined by Spencer Davis to discuss Robert Redford's Ordinary People. The film, which marked Redford's directorial debut, was a huge hit despite its very complex subject matter. It very sensitively portrays topics such as mental illness , grief and family dysfunction. Brandon and Spencer highlight the remarkable performances of Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, Judd Hirsch and the and Oscar-winning performance by Timothy Hutton. The movie is often remembered as the film that "beat Raging Bull for Best Picture". But, we hope this discussion will inspire you to re-discover this remarkable piece of filmmaking.
Matt & Todd discuss their fondness for the critical and commercial flop Turk 182. Sure this movie has its problems and plot holes, but it's still a fun little film. It has excellent performances by Timothy Hutton and Robert Culp. Also starring Robert Urich, Peter Boyle, and Kim Cattrall. Directed by Bob Clark.
In 1980, legendary actor Robert Redford made his directorial debut with a film that moved so many and gave us great dramatic performances from Donald Sutherland, newcomer Timothy Hutton, and even comedy sitcom star Mary Tyler Moore. The film is of course the moving Ordinary People. It took home four Oscars, including Best Picture. However, after more than 4 decades does it still resonate with us, and in retrospect is it still deserving as the best of 1980? Download and listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on Ordinary People. As a bonus, Jack also shares his choices for who will win all the prizes at the 96th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10th. For the fourth week of our horror film series, we're looking at another collaboration between masters of horror George A. Romero and Stephen King, The Dark Half. This film explores the Jekyll and Hyde story through a seemingly mild-mannered writer and his dark side (Timothy Hutton in a dual role), an unborn twin who takes form to wreak vengeance on those who have tried to silence him. We discuss the excellent screenplay, faithfully adapted by George Romero from Stephen King's novel; Hutton's nuanced portrayal of both Thad and George; Michael Rooker's definitive performance as Sheriff Alan Pangborn; the sparrow swarm special effects; connections to Hitchcock's The Birds; whether Amy Madigan could have single-handedly taken out George Stark; and Stephen King's own alter ego Richard Bachman. Bring your evil twin to our Halloween party and give us a listen!
The boys take it easy today and stop worrying about those pesky themes and structured conversations to just have a chat. They discuss a number of things, which I will now spoil in this description so the episode is more likely to get noticed from online searches.First the boys discuss the fan vote for their CGI Character Bracket, which was completed on Instagram after Episode 22's release. They would be remiss if they didn't bring up the new Arnold Netflix documentary, simply called "Arnold," and then brag about how they knew everything in it already because they're such big Arnold Schwarzenegger fans. Then the hosts decide that the superior Property Brother has been determined, since one of them has now married Zooey Deschanel. But there's also a clear worst Property Brother, their older brother JD who may or may not be a plumber. The boys chat about the Leonard Bernstein documentary and Bradley Cooper's comically large and possibly offensive nose before chastising Penn Badgley for not wanting to do sex scenes out of respect for his wife. Then they talk about Burning Man and the recent chaos going on within it, which Tom would like to be a part of. And finally, they bring up the recent allegations of a toxic work environment at the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, which is probably due to the fact that Jimmy is just too fun of a guy to be a good coworker. Stay off the booze, Jim!They still make time for the opening segment, in which they imagine Arnold playing Timothy Hutton's role in 1980's "Ordinary People," which sounds like a pretty depressing movie all things considered. But due to contractual obligations, the hosts still have to give the film its due diligence for the sake of completing that opening segment.Keep an eye out for a bonus episode of the content that wasn't good enough for this one coming soon! Jeremy Licht has had a hell of a career. He's worked with legends like James Woods, John Ritter, Hal Linden, Timothy Hutton, Sally Field, and Ned Beatty. You probably know him best from projects like Twilight Zone The Movie where he took over the part originally made famous by Bill Mumy in "It's a good life". He was also in a little TV show called Valerie, briefly called Valerie's Family, and later known as The Hogan Family. It's a classic. And this episode is a classic. Enjoy!
We have another serious drama this week with Robert Redford's Ordinary People. It won Best Picture for 1980. Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton star as a dysfunctional wealthy family in the Chicago suburbs. Judd Hirsch plays the psychiatrist helping Hutton's character with his depression. It is #48on our Best Picture Countdown.* Enjoy! *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.
Back to the usual crap this week as the guys talk through the 90s thriller The General's Daughter starring John Travolta. Ah yes, a staple of the 90s: very heavy subject matter combined with "hilarious" quips. The guys also discuss the movie teasing you with a wild Travolta accent, every line in the movie being treated like the most important moment in cinema, the post-ending title cards, one of the lamest villain reveals this side of Scream 2 and much more. Tread Perilously's next Patreon request leads to infernal Los Angeles for an early episode of Lucifer called "Sweet Kicks." Despite the possibility of becoming mortal, Lucifer Morningstar uses his connection to a new case as a means of ingratiating himself with the LAPD and becoming Decker's partner. The case: a woman trampled to death after shots were fired at celebrity shoe designer Benny Choi's latest fashion show (where Lucifer was a guest). Suspects include members of the Latin Kings and Asian Boys street gangs, but Decker's gut and Lucifer's ability to suss out desires make both options less likely. Is it really Choi's old pal, recently released from prison for a crime Choi committed, or someone even closer to the shoemaker? Justin cannot get over the fact the literal Devil is a character on this show. Erik expresses his love for the Lucifer comic book and his reservations about turning it into a Fox cop show. He also confuses Tim Matheson and Timothy Hutton. Justin finds himself tickled by the program's revised premise. The "unreasonably sexy" quotient also helps. Decker gets diagnosed with Skyler White Syndrome. Erik's knowledge about various Devils slips out. Original Tommy's once again get thrown under the bus. Hilarious generic gang names lead to a wild discussion in the weeds and memories of The Warriors video game emerge.

Hilary Brougher writes and directs films which blend the mechanics of original storytelling with gritty development of character. Through incisive dialogue; emotional harbingers of hope followed by inevitable glimpses of realism, Hilary's projects each carry with them a distinct piece of the era in which they were constructed. Growing up in Catskill, NY, she would frequent the cinema every week to catch a taste of the latest auteur to be featured, such as Fellini. Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion were among the filmmakers she admired into the 80's. She made her film debut as writer and director of The Sticky Fingers of Time (Terumi Matthews; Nicole Zaray; James Urbaniak), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. Shot on Super 16 in Williamsburg, the film captured the scent of the 1950's noir genre in unparalleled unique fashion and flair through the vein of time-travel, feeling stuck and reminiscing about the future. Her next feature film, Stephanie Daley, was developed at the Sundance Lab and starred Academy Award Winner Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn in lead roles; the film portrayed themes of trauma, pregnancy and the search for truth fueled by heavy emotions and performances which followed suit. Timothy Hutton, Denis O'Hare, Melissa Leo and Jim Gaffigan support the storyline in masterful and different ways. Hilary won the Waldo Scott Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and Best Director at the Milan International Film Festival; Stephanie Daley was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, while Tamblyn was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her gripping performance as the title character. Hilary then adapted Jane Mendelsohn's novel Innocence into a feature film of the same name, which starred Kelly Reilly, Sophie Lane Curtis, Sarita Choudhury and delved into the teen horror, vampire fiction genre. Her latest film, South Mountain, is a poetic expanse on life, liberty and morality through lens of masterful performances by Talia Balsam, Scott Cohen and Andrus Nichols. She worked with “Sticky Fingers” collaborator, cinematographer and husband, Ethan Mass, on the project, and displayed the craft she has continued to execute with charm throughout her illustrious career. She is Professor of Professional Practice in Film at Columbia University. In our conversation, we discussed shooting on film; practical considerations in distribution; and directing some of the best actors of all time.Opening Credits: Delay 77 - Nothing at All; Closing Credits: HoliznaCC0 - The Dull Blade Of Repetition

She's also a member of one of America's most well-known political families, as the wife of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Cheryl Hines and Alec discuss how Cheryl found her way to acting, what it's like to work with the one-and-only Larry David, and how she's changed since meeting her husband.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.
I'm texting back and forth with my oldest friend Jeff when he says, “We saw a clip yesterday of The Blob. Do you remember us watching that as kids?” Boy, do I! Just the mere mention of the title and all of these emotions come flooding back. I was around 11 when I saw that movie, and it was so terrifying that it has stuck with me to this day. Why can I remember that movie so vividly? I can remember the pictures, what I felt, and even exactly where I was sitting (or hiding) when I watched it. The ability to tell a story that evokes such strong emotions is what makes your story memorable. And my guest today is incredibly skilled at doing just that. Gus Krieger writes, produces, and directs and is here to talk about all the things! What should you not do when describing moments or characters? What do a street vendor and Luke Skywalker have in common? Why do stories have the ability to drive others to action, both small and grand? In this episode, Gus and I discuss and answer these questions, his technique for battling the “blank page blues”, and much more! What you will learn in this episode: How to dramatize true life experience in storytelling How to know if your protagonist is relatable to your audience What insultingly common mistake new storytellers must avoid Who is Gus? Gus Krieger is a producer, director, screenplay writer, and author. His first original screenplay production The Killing Room stars Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton and nominee Chloe Sevigny. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Halo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), it premiered in 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival. Gus also wrote and directed the horror short “Ol' Stan Levid” which premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre for Screamfest. He also carried out rewrites on the feature film Operation Endgame which stars Bob Odenkirk and Zack Galifianakis. He went on to write, produce, and direct The Binding, a feature thriller starring Amy Gumenick (Arrow), Max Adler (Glee, Sully), and Leon Russom (True Grit, The Big Lebowski). My Name is Myeisha, Gus' sophomore feature film, received worldwide acclaim and took home Slamdance, Seattle, and Boston Underground awards, among others. Warner Bros. This military-versus-civilians, young-against-old, leaders-versus-condominiums drama from 1981 introduced the world to Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Timothy Hutton, and the king of wacky screen deaths, Giancarlo Esposito. "Taps" also highlighted what was so great about George C. Scott's portrayal of General George S. Patton, what was so terrible about Junior ROTC, how TikTok could have saved Bunker Hill Academy, and why young Gene Lyons always had a coin up his ass. Hear Judge Ash preside over John Rambo's involuntary manslaughter trial and draw the lines between "Taps" and "Les Miserables." Witness a beloved Gene arguing that "Taps" is basically Shakespeare.
