Starting up a business can very challenging. If you start up a business you need to have a service or a product. Then you need to share that service or product with other people. But finding those people can be challenging. Fortunately when Travis Gardner had an idea, he knew that his buddy Ryan Flanders could help create a unique business. Almost a decade later, I sat down with Travis Gardner and Ryan Flanders both co-owners of Kombustion Motorsports in Salt Lake City, and had the opportunity to learn about the only side by side shop of its kind in the Salt Lake Valley. This shop is the place to visit for all of your side by side needs and desires. If you have a friend that bought a new RZR and put some wheels and tires, a sound system, light bars, bucket seats, and even an Ipad as a command center, you can be assured that if you take your machine to Kombustion, your buddy will be jealous of your ride over his new one.
I have really enjoyed learning more and more about how to be discovered in this digital world. In the beginning I did not believe that I needed social media and that everybody in the world would find my podcast and it would be an overnight success.... That still has not happened. However I came across an ad on Instagram that featured a gentleman that is reaching out to athletes and others that want to grow in their world. Aaron Fraser kindly accepted the offer when I reached out to be a guest on the show. This episode could not have come at a better time. In this episode not only will you learn about Aaron's past, but you will also be introduced to his business. He helps people like myself become "known" or "marketed" in the motorsports industry. He is a professional marketer with a vast knowledge and experience in the sector and he wants to share it with everybody.
When you make plans to have a great vacation with your family only to find out a pandemic has taken that away, you still find a way to interview great people! I recorded over the phone a great interview with Matt and learned about his life growing up and his passion for photography. He has used a lens on a camera for over a decade and is well known in the enduro and extreme moto. Matt is known to get a one a bike from time to time only after he is able to find the time aside from running an event business that has been a big part of Extreme moto. This episode is packed with great lessons and inspiration from an individual that is not afraid to tell you that he may not know the answer, but you can count on him helping and getting the job done.
I have met a good handful of people in my lifetime. There are many that stick out as a majority of the guests I had on the show do. This guest however is different, and I am excited to share his story with you! Josh Knight is the kind of guy that if you needed a shirt, he would take the one off of his back and give it to you. He is that genuine kind and humble individual we all need in our lives. From a humble happy life, Josh shares his passion for the sport and opens a new door to the podcast. Josh is not one to brag about his success but he has achieved multiple wins in multiple races. He loves this sport! He has participated and qualified to race what is known as the Olympics of Enduro called Internation Six Days Enduro. With the team USA Josh has brought home 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. That is a great accomplishment for USA! Finding riders like Josh is always exciting. At young ages, these guys have so much experience and knowledge, which they can share and coach others to be successful. Josh is of course no exception and I am excited to share this episode with you. Enjoy!
One sport within the industry gets mixed attention. A majority of fans in the segment of FMX only get to know big names that compete at events like X Games or Nitro Circus World Games. But FMX is not as popular as Supercross or Motocross. Fan base is smaller and more concentrated. Non the less, this part of the industry is still growing and quite popular among dirt bikers and non dirt bikers alike. FMX is just entertaining. Jesse James Morales reached out to record an episode. I was more than happy to do so. Seeing how he lived in Texas, we would have to record over the phone, which is not the most ideal way to record podcast episodes. We were finally able to pick a date and time, then began our session. I was taken away with the value Jesse brings to the table as a professional rider. In this episode, you will find that there is more training than just regular physical. Jesse desires to break a world record and he tells us that it is a mental game that needs to be thought out thoroughly or things could go very wrong. Enjoy this episode as Jesse breaks down the mechanics of how to break a world record.
When we are going into adulthood, we tend to think we need to have it all figured out. Arguably we are told that we should have it figured out by influencers and sometimes even our own parents. This can be very frustrating especially if we do not know what we want to do, or who we want to be. Ryan grew up on a dirt bike like so many other great athletes. However his career on a bike came to a stop after a divorce between his parents. He then picked up BMX biking with some friends and crushed it at the park. The thing is about a dirt bike though, you cannot escape the feeling you get twisting the throttle and sending it down a trail, through a whoop section, up and over a rock, or up a gnarly sand mountain. That feeling cannot be replaced, and such was the case for Ryan. After getting back on a bike, riding and racing, Ryan found himself working at a shop helping others fix up their own bikes or prepping them for races. After so many individuals requesting his help personally to prepare for their races, Ryan decided to give training sessions a try. That was when he fell in love with serving others and creating a business around training others to succeed.
Basically when you meet somebody that you can respect for the way that they have achieved success, you can't help to think "Maybe I can do that too"! Meeting Kate was very inspiring. She is crushing it in her industry and helping so many athletes and professionals achieve their goals and dreams. This episode is no different from the rest in the respect that the value that comes from the interviewee is beyond what I expected.
This episode I decided to give live streaming a shot. So while I was recording a live stream on Facebook, I hooked up the mic and recorded an episode as well for those that missed it! This pandemic of Covid-19 is kicking butt in not such a good way for so many people. It is causing so many people to lose jobs or work from home (the working from home part isn't so bad). But jobs are being lost due to shut downs of facilities, food providers have to shorten their staff, grocery stores are being emptied of supplies like TP (bizarre) and so much more. My heart goes out to all of those affected in such a negative way during this time. There have been 5 topics on my mind in the recent weeks. These topics come from 5 of my guests that I have been graciously privileged to have on my show. The 5 episodes that you should check out are #23 with Skyler Adams, #11 Rich Larsen, #19 Sarah & Bridget Burgess, #6 Keith Bailey, and #20 Zak Collings. Check them out!
A fairly new sport has been created just over 10 years ago. UTV racing is still in its infancy but it is gaining traction as more people go to dealerships and purchase new side by sides. Chris Gilmore of Gilmore Racing changed from racing dirt bikes to racing RZRs a few years back which opened huge opportunities and sponsorship to help him win races. In this episode I sat down with Chris and he helped me understand what it was like to be sponsored by Polaris and the advantages given to him through their support. 3 things that I took away from this episode: #1 When you are wanting sponsorships or you already have sponsorships, alway be on your best behaviour because you are the face of that company. #2 Experience pays off. The more seat time you get, the better you become. #3 Be confident. Chris is very confident in his knowledge of racing and in his machine. He explained like so many others that you have to know your machine and be confident in its abilities so you can push them to their limits for success.
This episode took me by complete surprise. Each time I sit down with a guest I am grateful that the message and information that they share is so valuable! Skyler grew up racing at a young age and is now racing as a professional in Arenacross and motocross. His passion from a young age has served him well and he shares how we can become sponsored, just in a way we may not have considered before.
When you finally get to meet a member of a group that you have always dreamed about meeting finally happened!! I sat down with DJ after a few weeks of getting both of our schedules to finally cooperate. I first met DJ at the Utah Snowmobile Expo in October and heard about his awesome business guiding others in the back country on snowmobiles and dirt bikes. He has gained special permission from the Government and received more passes each operating year to guide many amazing adventures with people from all around the world. Way to go! DJ is more well known in his role with the Nitro Circus crew. He has been featured on a few episodes and in the movie. He is well known for his great video editing abilities which have landed him great opportunities and even the introduction to the Nitro crew. If you get a chance, you can watch some of his older content when he would stunt ride his motorcycle at the Larry H Miller Complex now known at Utah Motorsports Campus. Enjoy this episode!
"Don't give up!" That is the theme of Sam Oldham's life. At a young age Sam always wanted a dirt bike. Fast forward 20 plus years and he is making that dream a reality. Creating content that will help the future of the industry, Sam is at the front breaking down the barrier between gas motors and electric bikes. While he is hustling in the industry, he also works on other business, each one that helps him grow every single day. As we chase our dreams, we are reminded that we live in a time where instant gratification is the norm. Unfortunately out of the less than 1% that become over night superstars, the rest of us will have to hustle for years to reach our dreams. The struggle is real! But with help and tips from professionals like Sam, we can find success in our lives, no matter how small they may seem. Let's all be like Sam and strive to live our dreams!
I've personally known Zak for over a decade. He is one of those guys that is naturally talented on a bike or a sled and honestly whatever sport he tries, he has the ability to excel quickly. It took about a year to get out schedules to line up but I was finally able to sit down and record an episode with him. If you are unfamiliar with Boondockers Film, the videos are of the previous snowmobile season and are filled with big cliff drops, big kickers (jumps), and as the title states, boondocking. Each member of the film has a different set of skills. But they all are driven to be as successful as possible in the backcountry. These guys work hard so they can play hard!
A new lesson was learned in this episode. Motorsports does not only encompass street bikes, dirt bikes, utv, atv, snowmobiles, or jet skis. It encompasses all motor racing. In fact Oxford dictionary states: "[Motorsports] A sport involving the racing of motor vehicles, especially cars and motorcycles." Sitting down with these two female racers was an incredible experience. Both bring so much value to the industry. Sarah started out with a different dream but when those dreams did not realize, she moved into motorsports, and we are glad she did! She raised her now 18 year old daughter in the industry and now they compete head to head in Off-Road Trucks! If you are trying to figure out how to get into the industry and race, find sponsors, or just listen to the fun stories from these talented women, you will thoroughly enjoy this episode.
Fresh eyes in the industry can be really good or really bad. It all depends on what the eyes see. Jody comes from a very different but not so different industry and brings great ideas with her fresh eyes into the Motorsport industry. With a golf background, Jody has helped so many others enjoy the golf industry from introductions and never forget experiences to supporting and coaching athletes. What Jody has learned in the golf industry, she is now implementing into the Motorsport industry, and she is changing the total experience for all participants.
I sat down with two beginner motocross racers and their friend/coach to learn more about what it is like coming into the industry at a young age. I found that the industry is still changing but still has room for improvement. Take a look at Jaxon and Jordan grow into their dreams and how Corey is still in the industry but his dreams were shattered along with multiple bones.

Coaching other people doesn't come easy. It takes time, dedication, and practice to help others succeed. If you are not practicing what you preach, then how can you effectively coach others? Alex has taken his two decades of riding and racing sport bikes and turned his passion into helping others. With time and dedication he has helped hundreds of other riders perform better on the track and on the street.
Have you ever been frustrated when you have to take your glove off while out riding, especially when you are wanting to record your best friend hitting the perfect line then bail into the trees, but you couldn't because you that frozen zipper would not open fast enough, and now you are stuck with just a memory? Sounds too familiar? Eric Vaughn had an idea. He took a perfectly good pair of snowboarding gloves which he cut a C shape from one side of the wrist to the other so he could pull his hand out and to get his camera and phone from his pocket then put his hand back into the glove without compromising the sealed part around your wrist. VO Gloves have been around for almost 2 decades and most people that have older versions, still use them to this day and love them! Follow Eric as he brings ideas to life with the gloves. You will be left wondering "why didn't I think of that?"
What does dedication in the industry look like? Time, money, passion, drive, and tons of hard work. Brandan Leith spent much of his younger years with one goal in mind, make it to the big leagues in Motocross. With a strong dedication and help from his father, then his girlfriend, Brandan made those goals happen. With the support of his family Brandan traveled to California often and even lived there so he could focus on his career. As he progressed in the Motocross world, he eventually was able to transition into Supercross and bring his skills with him. With 19 years of racing, Brandan learned how to manage his life and find success helping others. After a great career, Brandan is transitioning into a different career, taking on the family business to support his future family. Follow Brandan and his journey as he continues to learn and grow. It takes time, talent, and persistence to make it in the big leagues. The Supercross big leagues I mean. Landen Powell has been making main events racing with big names like Eli Tomac, Cooper Webb, Justin Barcia, and Blake Baggett. At a level like this, one can assume an amazing sponsorships and future success. Landen lays it all out about how he put in the work and became so successful. But sometimes life takes a tragic turn and we are left wondering "what happened?". When you do not plan for a "plan B" you end up falling into a lifestyle of hurt not knowing what to do or how to cope. When this happened to Landen, he tried to figure out what to do next, and it did not happen overnight. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Landen found that his talents that he developed in the Supercross world transferred into the real-estate industry and he is now crushing it helping others find their dream homes. Go check him out! How many times have you headed back to the truck because the sun went down too fast? Honestly the sun seems to speed up when ever we are out riding. So frustrating! However, Oxbow Gear came up with a solution! They have been providing the industry with helmet lights for a few years, and each year they improve their products. This year you can pick a new helmet light up for under $100 and stay out riding longer. Do not hesitate. Go get yourself one and get ready to ride further longer. https://www.oxbowgear.com/
The motorsports industry is a great place to grow and learn. Success comes easy to some because they are in the right place at the right time or they were raised racing and got sponsorships at a young age. For the other 98% people in the industry, they have to figure it out on their own which can take years! Rich Larsen fell into that 98% but has risen and is now in the lower percent class of riders! In this episode Rich explains that even though we are not raised in the industry with parents that race, you can still find success and sponsorships plus there is lots of room for growth! Follow Rich as he continues to chase his dreams and helps others along the way! https://www.instagram.com/richlarsen511/ https://www.facebook.com/rich.larsen.370
When I first saw the name VO Gloves I thought 'hhmmmm 'voh' gloves", which quickly found out it's pronounced 'V' 'O' Gloves. Vaughn Original Gloves have been in the industry for over a decade but mostly in the other snow sports communities. Now they are coming to life in the sledding and snowbike communities. When we see something that makes absolutely total sense, and we wonder "how did I live without this?" we know the product is that good. Check the gloves out, you will wonder the same. https://vogloves.com/ https://www.instagram.com/vogloves/ https://www.facebook.com/VOgloves527/
There are times when we just "know" what we want in life from a very young age. JT figured out by the time he was 4 years old that he wanted to be on a dirtbike riding from sunrise to sunset. From that time on JT has been in and out of the industry but never lost the love of riding. From FMX to local circuit racing and now to snowbike, JT is showing the industry that anything is possible if you have the desire, and reach out to others for guidance. Listen to the episode but be ready to jot down some notes. JT is now an Ambassador for Timbersled which helps him do what he loves, RIDE! He also manages to find time to help others find their way to success through his business Relentless Riding Clinics. Problem solution products are always welcomed in the industry. Keep Smiling Powersports came up with a solution that effects so many UTV riders. The Easy-Cool Door Latch! Made from lightweight material, this 3.5" latch removes the hot stagnant air in the cab. The UTV enthusiasts over at KSP saw a problem and with good engineering they created a solution that cannot be overlooked when riding down the trails. From a young age and you are introduced to riding motorcycles, it is likely you will grow up riding them as an adult. Kellen Birch is no exception! Though not a seasoned professional, Kellen still manages to show great potential in his class of racing, and takes home medals to prove it. When searching for a product to purchase, sometimes it takes a few hours of screen time to find the perfect product. The DRC GyroStand may have taken a few hours to find, but it ended up being worth the effort. This stand is unique because it folds up to a great compact size, but is strong and sturdy enough to hold heavy wheels. With this stand I was able to static balance a few wheels and also test wheel bearings. The technique will take a few minutes to figure out, but once you do, you will be able to balance or true your wheel. Check out the website at http://drcproducts.com/tool/wheel/d36-52-110/index.html to learn more about the stand and then check out your local WPS dealer to purchase one for yourself.

When you have a drive, anything is possible. I tell you how I started my own business just to buy a dirt bike to my return from a mission in Portugal for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and making my way back to Utah from MMI in Florida to start up a mobile mechanic business and then becoming the host of this podcast. When you grow up on a large farm, you are exposed to the motorsports industry at a young age. This is the case for Pro Hill Climber Keith Bailey. Growing up on the farm gave Keith the opportunity at a young age to ride ATVs, Snowmobiles, and Dirt Bikes. His story starts at a young age, but his life as a pro does not happen till later in life. Growing up with a hardworking father that had a passion for riding sleds and doing whatever he could to squeeze out more power and offset the power to weight ratio, Keith was exposed to great possibilities that would assist in his future riding career. Keith shares how he takes his business skills he learns running a business with his father and applies them to his hill climb racing. He explains how the average rider can become sponsored, a professional, and make it to the top of the hill. In his own words “just try it”, you very may well enjoy it, and will soon be racing side by side with Keith. Taking your bike, quad, sled, or side by side to the shop is not always easy. You wonder what is going on behind the doors where your toy resides for a day, a week or even a month! Adrenaline Moto came up with a new concept.... a community shop! Instead of paying an individual to work on your machine, being concerned if that individual is treating it with the respect and love you expect, you do all of the work yourself using specialty tools that may just be out of your budget for that year! Jason Clark (owner), Jake Hardee (co-owner/shop manager), and Alex Zinaich (teacher/coach/mechanic) come together to open and operate this one of a kind community shop. All three of these guys have years of experience helping others with their own bikes in the street bike racing industry. In this episode they guide the listener through their idea of how a community shop is ran and how they spend their days helping others learn more about their own machines. This idea may not be new to some but it is precedent in Utah and is making a difference with the community. These guys are focused on the industry. They are down to earth guys keeping their passion alive. WARNING: This episode does have explicit language throughout the episode. Listener beware if sensitive to this kind of language. How often do you come across a YouTube channel that puts out content that pulls you in, making you feel like YOU are operating the dirt bike? Kyle Brothersen has done just that with his YouTube channel Dirt Bike Channel. Kyle invited me to his home and we sat in his office next to his computer where he makes it all happen. Kyle was born to ride, but he just did not know it until he was a little bit older. He guides us through his childhood and how he was first introduced to four wheelers which at the time he considered the rival dirt bike not quite a fitting machine for himself. As he grew and was introduced through friends to the 2 wheeled dirt machines, Kyle has proven to himself that he belongs in the industry and has taken the role of helping others seek their passion in the industry. Kyle does not only make YouTube videos, but he also teaches courses on riding, gives gear away, rides amazing off-road country, and GIVES DIRT BIKES AWAY! I could not have asked for a better opportunity to learn about how to follow a passion, dream, and career than with sitting down with Kyle and listening to his story, and I know you will enjoy it to! In this episode, we are talking to none other than David McClure pro hill climber for team Arctic Cat. Dave is a member of the Black Cat factory team backcountry riders. We get to know Dave and how he began his career as a pro hill climber and also what he does to keep in shape for riding. He also explains that his summer schedule keeps him very busy as he owns and runs his own business and talks about how he broke his back which leaves him at a big decision to go back to racing at the hill climb competitions or become a full time backcountry rider.
