This conversation took place on August 25, 2024. Venues visited: The Japanese Hall on the 400 block of Alexander Street is still the Vancouver Japanese Language School, a cultural centre. Today's show features a story of trauma that is really difficult to hear. This might be the most intensely emotional episode of this show so far, and it's one that many listeners might find difficult and disturbing. It is a story about a young boy who was sexually abused by a Catholic priest and the devastating effects that it had on the boy and his family. If these topics might be difficult for you, or you have a strong attachment to the Catholic church, this might not be the episode for you. This story came to light in a powerful new song and video by Madison Violet (madisonviolet.com) Brenley MacEachern's brother Stevie. On September 22, 2021, Brenley posted on social media: Fifteen years ago today, my brother Stevie was strangled to death in a stairwell, between the 12th and 14th floor of an apartment building on Alexander Street in Toronto. Of course, that was just a small part of the string of bad luck following Stevie around; unlucky 13 on the last day of his life just summed it all up, I suppose. … It's been so hard and anxiety-inducing to decide to share Stevie's story. This video has only been out in the world for a day so far. Already the support and the stories messaged to us have strengthened my conviction that telling the truth and ending the stigmas around abuse, can help set us free. The effect that the abuse had on Stevie led to his life unravelling and spiralling out of control, and leading to his murder. Although Stevie is the one who suffered through the abuse, his loving family members suffered a different kind of trauma, watching a beloved family member struggle so visibly. Rightly, Brenly is emotional telling this story. She also carries and conveys a lot of anger towards the perpetrator and an organization that seems rife with such stories. Again, this episode, especially the second half, may not be for everyone. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, there are many mental health professionals that may be able to help. There are links to many great organizations on the Mental Health Resources page of flywithyourshadow.com. music credits and more info: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-7R

Guilt & Company Live | Vancouver's live music venue in Gastown.
Praised for his warm, lyrical tone, trumpeter Malcolm Aiken weaves together influences of jazz, world and pop music. His bold new album “New Futures” showcases sounds forged during his four year residency at Guilt & Company, Vancouver’s celebrated live music mecca. The sound is dub-soaked jazz with a splash of soul, down-tempo grooves, and vintage synths that set the mood for his velvet trumpet tone and sinewy improvisations. With his band a synergy emanates that recalls the sounds of Bob James and electric-era Miles Davis, with modern beats inspired by J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Robert Glasper. It’s been called “a west coast take on Nordic nu-jazz. Long, languid horn lines drift over hip beats and chill atmospheres in a collection of sparkling instrumentals. Based on the west coast, Malcolm is an international touring and recording artist who has performed with an impressive array of musical icons including Latin jazz legend Chucho Valdez, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, R&B Hall of Fame singer Dutch Robinson, Polaris-prize winning band Patrick Watson and salsa superstar Jimmy Bosch. He’s played for global audiences at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and for world figures including the Dalai Lama, Reverend Desmond Tutu and Shirin Ebadi. As both a player and producer, Malcolm maintains a diverse and dynamic schedule performing in clubs, festivals and concert halls across Canada and abroad, while working with artists and collaborators in the US, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Cuba. As an educator, Malcolm is an in-demand music adjudicator and clinician. From 2005-15, he served as director of brass with the award-winning West Vancouver Youth Band. He is currently acting Artist in Residence at the Vancouver School Board and sits on faculty at the Sun Peaks and Whistler Music Festivals. He holds a Master’s degree in ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia, and has published articles exploring topics on brass pedagogy and Latin jazz. He is a frequent panelist for the Juno Awards, FACTOR and the Canada Council for the Arts. This horn forward and percussion rich six piece band features some of Vancouver’s heaviest players playing the music of composer and baritone saxophone player Tim Sars. Tim’s music combines latin, funk, balkan brass, and chamber jazz, mixed with poetic lyrics. Sars’ friends Kevin Tang on trombone and Jocelyn Waugh on trumpet fill out the rest of the horn section. These three friends have been playing music together for many years, touring though BC with their Afrobeat band “Camaro 67”, and even opening the Vancouver Jazz Festival with the “Tim Sars Sextet” in 2017. The Burying Ground is an upbeat blues string band that brings the fire of punk to the technical prowess and distinct sound of such early blues, country and jazz masters as Blind Blake, Bessie Smith, Gary Davis, Memphis Minnie, Big Bill Broonzy, and Jimmie Rodgers. The core duo of Devora Laye (washboard, vocal and saw) and Woody Forster (guitar and vocals) are known for songwriting that illuminates the human experience, and reflects the modern day by touching on mental health, the trauma of war, social justice and good old-fashioned lost and found love. It is today’s commentary on a framework of vintage music. All three albums have hit the radio charts - Big City Blues (2015); Country Blues & Rags (2017); and The Burying Ground (2017). A rotating cast of masterful backing musicians accompanies Woody and Devora. Born and raised in the Philippines, Audrey Rose moved to British Columbia with her family at the age of 13. Growing up in the influences of 80's music icons like Guns N Roses, Scorpions and The Cure, she embraced a peculiar genre; a twist and blend of rock, jazz, soul and blues. Audrey Rose continued to live her passion, performing as a solo artist but eventually set this aside to pursue audio engineering in the live realm. After working with, and constantly getting inspired by many talented musicians behind the board, her passion to perform rekindled and is ready to take on the stage once again with both old and new music. This episode of the Guilt & Company podcasts features two of our favourite Vancouver based instrumentalists, Jonny Tobin and Nate Drobner. Jonny Tobin has, in record time, become one of the top call keys players in Vancouver since graduating from Capilano college merely a few years ago. He plays with absolutely everyone in town and abroad and it’s clear to see why. Nate Drobner, who is an outstanding bass player and multi instrumentalists, has been behind some of the most impressive R&B, hip hop, and jazz fusion to come out of Vancouver in the last 5 to 7 years. He also produces beats under the name Astrological and has an absolutely incredible catalog of music to his name. Jonny and Nate grabbed guitarist Tristan Paxton and drummer Sean Mitchell to form the quartet that performed as the Jonny Tobin/Nate Drobner quartet. Tristan and Sean are definitely two of Vancouver’s most prized instrumentalists as well. Here’s why. Katie Kuffel is a composer and musician based in Seattle, Washington. Her first full-length album, Pearls, was released in October of 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Her first EP, Animal Pragmatist, was released in 2013. Katie’s songwriting is both innovative and thoughtful, with a contemporary sound that draws from blues, jazz, and folk music as well as her training in classical cello and jazz piano. An openly queer artist, she explores concepts of sexuality and femininity throughout her works. Katie has been featured as the musical act in popular podcast Welcome to Nightvale, and in PopMatters as one of the ‘best musical hopes to break out on 2016.' In the words of author Adam Finley: Pearls sounds like alternate-reality Regina Spektor, heavily steeped in the Pacific Northwest with bright piano and a gorgeous voice gliding, rich and effortless, through craftily constructed songs that balance whimsy and self-awareness. Pearls is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp, and Katie can be found performing at venues throughout Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest. Their blends of old soul, fresh pop and infectious beats has landed them on lineups such as Pemberton Music Festival 2015 and JUNOfest 2016. The Road Ahead? Patron-Driven Acquisition Might Become... Library patrons make use of many forms of content: journals, ebooks, videos, audio tracks, archival documents, musical scores, etc. Each of these content types is amenable to PDA and the technology certainly exists to deliver each of these content types in PDA. So what stands in the way? We consider the prospects for a future-state of PDA that is multimedia, universal in its publisher/provider inclusion and delivered in an "e-commerce," if you will, environment where the content providers and the library can engage in negotiated agreement on item subscription charges and the trigger to purchase, rather than these being set by the aggregator. In this panel we explore three trends propelling us toward this future state and three trends hindering this future state, and will solicit feedback from participants as to other trends we may have missed. Propelling: 1. Continually tightening library budgets 2. Gradual emergence of affordable, patron-driven models like ReadCube 3. Decreasing demonstrable value of "commodity collections," especially in print and especially in research libraries, moving us towards digitization of rare and unique collections for consumption on demand Hindering: 1. The emergence of a standard for a platform 2. Flexible terms on triggers and prices 3. Strong culture of "institutional ownership" and collection building in libraries Rick Anderson Associate Dean for Collections & Scholarly Communication University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Rick Anderson is Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources & Collections in the J.
