EP 331 | Trans Canada Christmas Vol. 1

It's our first-ever Trans Canada Christmas - starring the Trans Canada Highwaymen. Steven Page - BNLadies and Steven Page Trio Moe Berg - Pursuit of Happiness Craig Northey - Odds and Steven Page Trio Chris Murphy - Sloan   They are great friends, each with his band and career. What they have in common is a sense of the music they grew up with and a welcome sense of humour.   These Christmas sessions began in the '70s at CBC Vancouver with Producer Susan Englebert: Shari Ulrich, Valdy, Terry Frewer, Roy Forbes, and several guests. 5-6 years of gathering around a series of microphones, playing Christmas songs and telling Christmas stories. Such fun. Sadly, we lost our friend Susan to cancer and the Christmas show to time itself. The concept returned at Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver in 2015 and we enjoyed three years of Christmas in the Round with Barney Bentall and his assorted friends. We've played all three years on past Christmas Stews.     Now comes CKUA's turn to host the same tradition. Each Highwayman brings a Christmas song and stories of past Christmas tales. 5 songs in total. Craig Northey's was co-written with Brent Butt of Corner Gas. Steven's is about cheese logs. Chris's is about kids coming home and Moe's is the Christmas Classic Mistletoe and Holly.  They finish with Do they know it's Christmas.   Thank you to Arianne, Duke, Jasmine, and Bren for their production skills in bringing this show to air. Amazing work. And to Corey Wood for his skills and friendship in the edit and graphic studio here on Vancouver Island.

'What's starting to interest me is stories of resilience for a post carbon world. What are we going to need for our emotional well-being? It's going to be a different world not long from now. If we do this, and we must do this, this transition has to happen and there's going to be a sense of loss and sacrifice and challenge, not just with what's happening externally from a climate point of view, but in how we're going to have to make changes to our lives and reorient our energies in terms of our advocacy. I feel like there's an opportunity for artists - I'm more connected to the film and television sector and the documentary community - throughout the system, to be able to provide realistic and yet reassuring narratives about what the upside of all this might be.'Tracey Friesen, Vancouver, November 2021I first met Tracey on September 21, 2021 at a Processing the federal election during a climate emergency Zoom event organized by the Climate Emergency Unit. Since then, we have kept in touch through our participation in SCALE (the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency network). Our 30-minute conversation covered a lot of ground, however, we only touched the surface of Tracey's vast experience and network of collaborators in the cultural industries, so I hope that another conversation is in order down the road!Tracey has over 30 years' experience in Canada's cultural sector. She spent more than a decade at the National Film Board in Vancouver, where she earned producer or executive credits on dozens of documentary film, animation and digital projects. She's also held contracts with organizations like Inspirit Foundation, Mindset Foundation, DOC, Roundhouse Radio, and the David Suzuki Foundation. Tracey is author and founder of Story Money Impact, the charitable society that brought us Good Pitch Vancouver and Story to Action, plus other initiatives to advance education around media impact. In 2013 she was named ‘Woman of the Year' by Women in Film & TV Vancouver. She is currently Managing Vice-President, BC Branch, at the Canadian Media Producers Association, where she passionately represents and supports BC-based independent film and television producers.  I was touched by this quote from Tracey near the end of the conversation:I'm mindful that with the climate emergency, it's so existential that it's captured my attention perhaps most strongly because I really hope that in the kind of complicated dynamic of the wonderful, wild world that we're in right now, that it's one thing that will impact all of us. Not the same way, certainly, there are those of us living in different parts of the world that will be affected in different ways, but it's such a global community, it has to come together in all the ways that they can. So, we do need the scientists and we do need all of the work being done across all of the important social issues that are happening right now. And we really do need the storytellers to validate that their story driven, narrative driven, emotionally driven pieces of work will help to touch people now to change their behaviour or will help to soothe or reassure or be with them in the world post transition.Tracey mentioned the following links during our conversation:Being CaribouCanadian Media Producers Association (CMPA)Climate Emergency UnitGood Pitch VancouverReel GreenShamelessStory Money Impact *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. What on earth is going on with American politics? Fake news? Eric Merkley demystifies our instincts to develop bias, how they are targeted by politics, and how to overcome them to make our political discourse more productive, civil and factual. Eric Merkley is a Ph.D. candidate at UBC's Department of Political Science and a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Scholar. His research focuses on how citizens make judgments on public policy in the context of limited information and motivation. His recent ongoing projects explore why American voters polarized on climate change, and more broadly on the conditions under which public preferences may diverge from expert opinion, such as on free trade, and genetically modified foods. Eric has provided expert commentary on U.S. elections, polling and public opinion, and campaign strategy for outlets such as the CBC, Breakfast Television, Roundhouse Radio, and News 1130. He has also recently worked as a Research Associate at the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, specializing in agriculture policy. Eric holds a Master of Arts degree in Political Science and Social Statistics from McGill University. Writer and director Sammy Paul (@ICOEPR) brings in some of his favourite cassette tapes for us to improvise! You can listen LIVE and be a part of the show by sending us your tapes to improvise, every Sunday at 4pm on Roundhouse Radio: http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/radio/player/ Played Up is the improvised archive show where the tapes don’t exist yet! Each week a special guest shares their collection of cassette tapes, which are then brought to life by The RH Experience. www.youtube.com/therhexperience www.twitter.com/therhexperience www.facebook.com/rhexperience
