Mark joins the show to chat about his new album, Smiling. Joining the show is Olivia Cuttill as a guest host. Saxophonist and composer Mark Lockheart first came to prominence in the mid 1980s with the influential big band Loose Tubes. In 1992 Mark formed the eclectic co-led quartet Perfect Houseplants, a group that released six albums and collaborated with classical artists such as the Orlando Consort, Andrew Manze and Pamela Thorby. The mid-90s saw Mark recording and performing with many jazz, folk and pop artists, including Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, June Tabor, Stereolab, Jah Wobble, Robert Wyatt, Prefab Sprout, Don Um Romao, Thomas Dolby and Radiohead. In 2003 Mark joined Seb Rochford's Polar Bear, which over a period of 12 years recorded six ground-breaking albums. The band's second album, Held On The Tips Of Fingers, was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Award and later appeared in Jazzwise's 100 Albums That Shook the World. The band's fifth album, In Each And Every Way, was also nominated for a Mercury Award in 2013. In 2007 Mark was a featured soloist (along with John Pattitucci and Gwilym Simcock) in Mark Anthony Turnage's About Water, which premiered on the Southbank in June 2007. Mark collaborated several times more with Turnage, performing his A Man Descending with the Southbank Sinfonia in 2008 and more recently as one of the featured musicians in Turnage's opera Anna Nicole, which premiered at the Royal Opera House in London in 2011. In 2009 Mark's quintet album In Deep was released to critical acclaim. The following year saw the release of Mark's first big band album Days Like These with the Hamburg-based NDR big band. That same year Mark was awarded APPJC Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year 2010. In 2013 Mark released Ellington In Anticipation, a radical reworking of Ellington melodies with an all-star line up including Seb Rochford and Liam Noble. The album received numerous four and five-star reviews and was MOJO magazine's Jazz Album of 2013 and nominated as Best Jazz CD of 2013 by the APPJC at the 2014 Parliamentary Awards.  An invitation to perform at the New York Rochester Jazz Festival in 2014 led to the formation of Mark's trio, Malija, with bassist Jasper Hoiby and pianist Liam Noble. Malija's debut album The Day I Had Everything was released in December 2015 to critical acclaim. The group's second album Instinct was released in 2017 followed by a 21-date tour.  In 2016 Mark was awarded Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year and also nominated for the British Composer Awards for his composition With One Voice. A few years later saw the birth of two very contrasting projects , the jazz/orchestral work titled Days On Earth for jazz sextet and 30-piece orchestra, released on Edition Records in January 2019 and a set of English Renaissance music ‘Salvator Mundi' recorded at Temple church in London with organist Roger Sayer.mosaic: Exploring Jewish Issuesmosaic is Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County's news magazine show, exploring Jewish...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

Delano's Top of the Week returned today after a bank holiday break last week. Joining Tom on the show was Cordula Schnuer who came in to talk about the review to Luxembourg's national energy and climate plan which the government will be presenting this afternoon (Monday 17th April). All EU countries had to submit such a plan to the European Commission in 2019. They set out how they will achieve the EU's goal to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050. That also includes targets to increase the share of renewable energies from 11% in 2020 to 25% by 2030 and to increase energy efficiency resulting in a reduction of demand between 40 to 44%, for example by improving insulation of homes. It's mandatory under the EU strategy for each member country to submit an updated version of the plan by 30 June this year. That is meant to give countries an opportunity to set more ambitious targets, take into account the latest research and findings, for example from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC). Later this afternoon the prime minister together with the ministers for the economy, energy, and environment, climate and sustainability will present the draft update. That should already include input, for example from the citizens' climate council that was convened last year and where a group of 100 people developed proposals and recommendations for the government on how to tackle the climate crisis. But the document as a whole must also be opened for public consultation so that NGOs or institutional players like industry and business federations can submit their opinions. But also any regular citizen can comment and leave their remarks. For the first version, it was 328 people and 30 NGOs and other groups who gave their feedback. Cordula started her event recommendations by reminding listeners that today is the last day for foreign nationals living in Luxembourg to register to vote in the upcoming municipal elections. She also recommends: Wednesday 19 April: Django Bates' Belovèd. Django Bates in a British jazz pianist who teams up with a double bass and drums for his jazz trip Belovèd. They are playing at the Philharmonie from 7.30pm with an artists talk just before the performance from 7pm. Saturday 22 April: Open day of Luxembourg's institutions. You can visit parliament, different ministries, the state council, the central bank. It's an opportunity to look inside some beautiful and historic buildings in Luxembourg that aren't otherwise accessible to the public. It's also an opportunity to meet with lawmakers and public officials. Also on 22 April at 4pm: Lecture by Juliet Jacques, a writer and filmmaker based in London on transgender lives and representation at Mudam. Hosted in the framework of an exhibition by US transgender artist Tourmaline. There's no extra fee for the lecture but you have to pay entrance to the museum. Her personal pick was a book: The Brutish Museums - The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution.

Nishat Khan is one of India's finest musicians; born into a dynasty of famous sitar players, he first went on stage with his father and uncle when he was only seven. Since that first appearance in Calcutta in the 1970s, he has performed worldwide, collaborated with all kinds of musicians, from Philip Glass to Gregorian choirs to Django Bates, and composed both for the BBC Proms and for Bollywood films. He's here in Britain to appear at the Aldeburgh Festival this June, fresh from recording the soundtrack to a Bollywood movie. In Private Passions he talks to Michael Berkeley about the musical family he grew up in - he started playing the sitar before he could even walk. He explores too the spiritual meaning of music within this tradition and its power to reveal the voice of God. And he shares his excitement at discovering Western classical music, still very much a minority taste in India. Nishat Khan's choices include Bach's B Minor Mass; Bruckner's 8th Symphony; Mozart, Manuel de Falla; Britten's "Sea Interludes"; and sitar music played by his father and uncle. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.
