Canadian singer-songwriter and actress
POPULARITY
She's a musician whose artistic vision and songwriting are every bit as distinctive and expressive as that spectacular voice of hers. Frazey Ford's trademark tremulous croon first became well-known as part of the vocal blend for globally-renowned Vancouver folk music mainstays The Be Good Tanyas. While that band's aesthetic leaned toward the folky and jazzy, Frazey's own instincts have always been strongly inclined toward a classic soul music feel. Her 2010 debut album Obadiah began to chart her own unique artistic course, which she further developed with 2014's Indian Ocean, and 2020's U Kin B the Sun. In this free-wheeling conversation, we'll learn about the rather stunning experiments in creativity that led to her beautiful latest release; as well as the nearly stranger-than-fiction story behind Indian Ocean, which turned 10 years old in October of 2024. Those sessions took place in Memphis, in the studio where many of her all-time favourite soul songs were recorded in the 1970s – with the very musicians who helped to craft them. And as a special bonus treat (and a meta experience of sorts) – we conclude this episode of Hidden Track with an actual hidden track! One that appears at the end of the streaming version of Indian Ocean. This is a Hidden Track Story from a dressing room at the Arden Theatre with the wonderful Frazey Ford. Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Graphics: Craig Taffs | Music: Doug Hoyer The Hidden Track Podcast is a CKUA production made possible by the generosity of our donor community. Welcome Friends and thank you for connecting with us for another wonderful episode of CWC!In today's episode, Donna and Paula caught up with the talented singer - songwriter - entertainer May Davis. We talked about her latest video release, "Black Widow." The video is dedicated to May's sister Emily who was a badass!May Davis is an emerging singer-songwriter who relocated from Revelstoke, British Columbia to the beautiful Ottawa Valley. Her unique and unforgettable sound pulls from blues, Americana and old-time country western with smokey vocals that echo vintage crooners like Bobbie Gentry and Janis Joplin, but the unforgettable stories and songs she brings to the stage are all her own. In 2021, Davis released her first full-length album which she showcased on her fruitful May in July summer tour in 2022. With the support of CreativeBC she released three new singles and a deadly music video for her bluesy murder ballad, Black Widow in 2023. Davis recently supported notable bands including Frazey Ford, Elliot Brood, and Shred Kelly while headlining Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival, Blue Heron, Summer Sounds, and Tiny Lights. Sam Parton (The Be Good Tanyas) "The Littlest Birds Sing The Prettiest Songs" Episode SummaryIn this episode Kate speaks with Sam Parton, founding member of the wildly popular Canadian Alt Folk band The Be Good Tanyas. Their debut album Blue Horse was named 2002's top 50 releases by Q Magazine (UK) and the band would go on to release more albums cherished by fans all over the world. Their albums Chinatown and Hello Love were met with glowing reviews including four stars from Rolling Stone Magazine and the band sold out concert halls across North America and Europe. Sam tells us about how trauma from her early childhood ultimately set her on a journey that would see her not only find her musical voice and people, but create what I think is one of the greatest Canadian bands of all time The Be Good Tanyas. She tells us what she thinks creativity is and what it wants from us, how she found her bandmates, the joy and challenges of collaboration, and how lyrics come to her - including the story of how one of my very favourite songs of all time by any band was written, The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs (hear an excerpt of this song in the episode) Things Sam and I talk about-Her ideas on how creativity and creative intelligence are often part of a lineage and the yearning that can create within us -How being a twin made her into a great collaborator-Finding her long lost father and how that separation fed her desire to become a musician-Growing up in the shadow of a sibling born with extraordinary musical talent, and in a home with tormented, abusive adults feeling that she had to do her music in secret and how the grief from those things ultimately drove her to find and express her own creative gifts-The magic that can happen when we know how to approach creativity from a place of truly not knowing, beginner's mind. -What is inspiration and why do we feel like we have to wait for it? What if it is waiting for us? -How she met Frazey Ford, co-founding member of the be Good Tanyas-The joys and challenges of creative collaboration-How the words and melody for The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs came to her and what the song means to herBuy her music on Bandcamp!Episode NotesIn this episode Kate speaks with Sam Parton, founding member of the wildly popular, Canadian Alt Folk band The Be Good Tanyas. She tells us what she thinks creativity is and what it wants from us, how she found her bandmates, the joy and challenges of collaboration, and how lyrics come to her - including the story of how one of my very favourite songs of all time by any band was written, The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs (hear an excerpt of this song in the episode) So many of us KNOW from a young age what we love to do, but so often it is overshadowed by our life circumstances, whether it's childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, unsupportive parents or simply not having anyone in our lives to see us and cheer us on, or as in Sam's case being so different from the people in her childhood home, that she grew up feeling like an alien in her own home. Sam's drive to find her father, to fill in the gaping hole his departure from her life left, would eventually take her on a winding adventure that would give rise to a deeply fulfilling musical career and the ability to fulfill the calling of her musical gifts. And thank goodness for all this because the music and lyrics that Sam has been able to allow to come through her have woven themselves into the tapestry of my own (and I am sure millions of others) lives. She had a strong drive to follow the lineage of creativity, to find out how the people who created music that spoke so strongly to her like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, were able to create those things.Sam was a founding member of the band The Be Good Tanyas whose debut album Blue Horse quickly earned them cult status as a beloved Alt Folk Band, it was named among 2002's top 50 releases by Q Magazine (UK) and the band would go on to release more albums cherished by fans all over the world. Their albums Chinatown and Hello Love were met with glowing more reviews including four stars from Rolling Stone. The band toured sold out concert halls across North America and Europe. Their music was featured in tv shows like Breaking Bad and The L word. My excitement was because here I was sitting down in real life, with the person who had brought music and lyrics into the world that had been on the soundtrack to many of the important moments of my life for the better part of 20 years from weddings and births of my children to lazy sunday brunches and sunny sunday afternoons cleaning the house, in some way Sam had been with me through it all and here she was sitting down with me to tell me the stories of how it all came to be. One of my favourite moments in the episode is when Sam tells the story of how the lyrics and melody for The Littlest Birds Sing the Prettiest Songs came to her. This is one of my very favourite songs of all time (not just from the Be Good Tanyas repertoire) we got permission to share some of the song with you which you'll hear when we get to that part of the conversation. It was a chance encounter at the Vancouver Public library that brought us together way back in October when I was just starting the show. Like any adoring fan I may have gushed a bit and bravely asked her to join me in conversation on the show, hers was an immediate generous, warm and full-hearted YES. It took us a few months to line our schedules up and I am so pleased to be able to share this conversation and her music with you today. Here is my conversation with Sam Parton. In the weeks after this interview was recorded, Sam and I went on a walk through the sun dappled forest near my home. We talked more about life, creativity, and how much music industry has changed, with streaming services making it more difficult than ever before for musicians to make a living with their music. I wanted share some ways you can support Sam and her music. You can find those in the show notes on KateShepherdCreative.com To me Sam's story is a beautiful love story, the love of a little girl for her natural born gift, the love of a daughter for her long lost father, and the love of an artist for creativity itself. Sam gave me so many things to think about, I really appreciated what she said about putting down the projections of how we see others as being so much more prolific or professional than which can help us to be brave enough to take the risk of looking like we don't know what we are doing - because from that place of lighthearted silliness magic usually happens. And as usual the word I pulled for today's show was perfectly perfect. It was inspiration. I got the truthbumps when she started talking about inspiration. Friends, I think she might be right. What if it IS the other way around? What if inspiration is waiting for us? What would be available to you if you were to approach your creative practice as though inspiration was already right there waiting for you, and to allow yourself to approach creating from a place of truly not knowing anything and waiting to be shown?Special Thanks to Sam Parton and Birthday Cake Media for permission to use The Littlest Birds Sing The Prettiest Songs in this episodeKate Shepherd: art | website | instagramMorning Moon Nature Jewelry | website | instagramCreative Genius Podcast | website | instagramSam Parton: website | instagram | bandcampResources discussed in this episode:Bob DylanNeil YoungDolly PartonJudy GarlandPlease share the show with a friend and if you are moved to make a financial contribution to the production of this podcast, THANK YOU here is the link for our Patreon

It's a power hour of tremendous ladies (sorry to be so gendered about it, not everyone on the playlist identifies that way!). Let's call it a celebration of a higher vocal range? Listen in to hear Neko Case take on a Sparks song, Julie Doiron reunite in the 00's with Eric's Trip, recall the nights Basia Bulat and Martha Wainwright came to Meaford Hall and Fiver played the golden town's Home + Home Fest. Revisit a classic by Doctor of Fine Arts and Summerfolk alumni Buffy Ste. Marie, check in with local songstress Brianna McGowan, regret the time I missed seeing Weather Station (and Neko for that matter) at the Avening Community Centre. Get in the groove with Frazey Ford, and hear some gems from Elecric Eclectics alumni Jennifer Castle, Mary Margaret O'Hara and U.S. Girls. As if I could fit in more: Rae Spoon's ode to the Great Lakes and a brand new track that came into the Georgian Bay Roots inbox from Carmen Braden. Carving by Fran Bouwman

Frazey Ford. In a music business filled to the brim with coulda, shoulda and woulda's – Frazey Ford is the real deal. Her latest album is U kin B the Sun Behind a singular voice..as comfortable on a folk festival stage in Calgary as a jazz festival stage in London (2 nights) ..she is a joy to hear and behold. Frazey has overcome. Family dynamics, bullying and abuse, the recent loss of 2 family members, and a male-dominated music business. The first of four outstanding podcasts – we begin this journey with Frazey Ford. Next week William Prince

There are a few times in the course of creating shows over the path of a year that create themselves. This is one of those shows and it was perfect for the podcast. Intimacy and sexuality is the soil that gives rise to creativity, pleasure and regeneration of new life. As mainstream understandings of sex, marriage, and family shift, Dr. Kim TallBear highlights how the colonial project of nation-building disrupted the vitality of Indigenous kinship by imposing heteronormative monogamous marriage and the nuclear family structure. How have these constraints bred hyper-sexualized, paradoxical and fetishized beliefs that degrade relationships, wellbeing of communities and the land? Bringing enlivening perceptions that echo from the personal to collective, Kim TallBear is Associate Professor, Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta, and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Technoscience & Environment. By unraveling the doctrines of scarcity and separation, we are challenged to shatter pervasive beliefs of boundaries, binaries, and scarcity within our relations. Music by M83, Frazey Ford & FRASE. Frazey Ford's last album, Indian Ocean, brought her worldwide attention -- something that hit the BC singer-songwriter while playing a show in New Zealand last November. "There was a whole row of women in front who flew in from some other island. And they knew the words to every song," she tells Terry David Mulligan on this week's podcast. "It was just so sweet. It's a wild thing." Now working with a new label and with another album set to be finished later this year, Ford gives a peek at her personal approach to songwriter. And he shares some info on her plans this summer, which include a stop off at Lethbridge's Wide Skies Music Festival. Songs featured on this podcast include "Indian Ocean," "Done," and "September Fields" from Frazey's 2014 album Indian Ocean.

Music heard during this segment was: "Firecracker" by Frazey Ford, "Kallaloe" by Blue Dot Sessions, "Down By The Bank" by Blue Dot Sessions, and "Coast of Daylight" by Gilman Mom. This week's featured live act is Burnaby folk singer-songwriter Luca Fogale. Luca takes a confessional approach to songwriting, spinning stories from his own rumination on life and identity. Between rapturous applause that punctuate the songs you’ll hear in this week’s set, you could almost hear a pin drop in the Alix Goolden Hall as Luca plays – with just his guitar and his voice. Since beginning his journey into the business, Luca has shared stages with the likes of Frazey Ford, Jay Malinowski, and Dan Mangan. This past summer, he flew to Eau Clair, Wisconsin to begin work on his debut album. The Burnaby native found himself at Justin Vernon’s April Base Studios. S. Carey and and Bon Iver recording engineer Brian Joseph were behind the board for those recordings. It was an experience Luca described as “life-changing”.
Billy Conway, who played drums in my parents’ band, and the rock band Morphine, took me aside one night and asked me when I was going to start writing my own songs. I thought that was a pretty good question.” So Reed got to work, and in his late teens. After a move to Colorado, Reed’s clear tenor, emotional songwriting, and undeniable charisma as a front man launched Acoustic Junction in 1989, which developed a cult following in the jam- band era of the 90s. The band released six albums, a collaboration with Graham Nash, and was signed to Capricorn Records and later Mercury Records. Reed found a new kind of success in short trips once or twice a year to Los Angeles, New York and Nashville that earned him placements on the silver screen, television, and commercials. Heput what money he could from the royalties to make three solo records: Spark (2004), Stoned Beautiful (2007), and Once an Ocean (2009) Country legend Lee Ann Womack’s September 2014 release leads with his song “Fly.”Lost in the West is a soundtrack for the invisible cinema of the mind. It features seven songs combining Reed’s powerful lyrics and vocal performance set against wide-open landscapes painted with Stratocaster and Wurlitzer. A deeply talented and accomplished cast joins Reed as producers, performers, and co-writers on this record. John also delivers a masterful performance on percussion, and Jefferson’s varied guitar work shines throughout the record. Anaïs Mitchel sings on “Rags and Bones” and “Four Lanes.” Frazey Ford appears on “Caroline” and “Steal Away.” Reed co-wrote “Caroline” with Esmé Patterson, founding member of Paper Bird, and he teamed with Gregory Alan Isakov to write “Rodeo Clown.”The choices Reed has made earned him the respect of his industry peers on one hand, and his loved-ones on the other.
