Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are joined by a very special guest this week for Episode 551 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Tracii Guns tells us about his favorite pedals, plugins, and pajamas! Please be aware this episode contains infrequent swearing and drug references - not suitable for minors! This week the guys are pretty stoked to have one of Brian's all-time guitar heroes on the show. Tracii Guns is a legendary LA based guitarist, super talented player, and happens to be the founding member of a couple of huge bands you may have heard of. He also has a vast amount of stories and anecdotes to recount...and they are seriously funny. Brian drills straight into the culture of the Sunset Strip scene of the 1980s as the guys take a "behind the scenes" peek into the LA rock scene of that era. Tracii talks about some of the legendary bands he played alongside when LA Guns first made it, including Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, WASP, and a whole bunch more. Richard looks at the differences between the English and the US Music scene of that period and Tracii has some great insights and a mutual love of some classic British bands.Blake asks about the early days of Grunge and how that changed the direction of rock and Tracii gives us a candid and hilarious take on how that played out and what it meant for the musicians of the time. Tracii then tells us how Brian helped him through an existential rig crisis and you might be surprised by the fixes they came up with.http://www.lagunsmusic.com/ The Nigels, The Rock Sock, Kid Creole, Steve Vai, Rockman stories...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 6: Multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and producer Bobby Easton. Steeped in funk (especially P-Funk) and global music, among other styles, artists he has worked with include Sergio Mendes, Janelle Monae, Van Halen, Beck, George Clinton and many members of Parliament-Funkadelic, Ozomatli, the Big Ol' Nasty Getdown, members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trulio Disgracias, Dennis Coffey, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Fred Wesley, Onyi, Moforro, capoeira music albums, and many more. In 2009, he founded the Long Beach Funk Fest, and for 25 years has served as a music educator. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. In his first memoir, beloved comedian and national treasure Bill Bailey shares stories of his life - and the animals he's met along the way. Bill Bailey has always had dogs, including a Patterdale terrier called Rocky who would travel with him in the van to his first shows and occasionally join him on stage. Fast forward a few decades and Bill has shared his home with a variety of birds, dogs, frogs, chameleons and an armadillo called Tommy. 'We even had a giant chicken, a huge Malay cockerel called Kid Creole. After a few stand-offs he took against me. He had to go in the end, I was being stalked in my own back garden.' That chicken apart, animals have always been at the heart of an extraordinary life as one of the nation's favourite comedians, actors, musicians and (thanks to Strictly) dancers: from terriers to the orangutans of Sumatra and the parrots that share his breakfast every morning in west London. Full of the leftfield humour, wit and wisdom that has made Bill Bailey such a beloved performer around the world, My Animals and Other Animals is the story of Bill's life; but more than that, it's the story of how all of our lives are enriched by the animals who accompany us on that journey.

What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the mutant disco/no wave album “A Christmas Record!” From ZE Records, it was a triumph of experimental Christmas music.Founded in 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, ZE was one of the most popular rated labels, capturing the emerging New York sound of the period. They gained exposure through a distribution deal with Island Records. In fact, before long they had signed such acts as Kid Creole, the Waitresses, Was (Not Was), Cristina, and James White. Called “the best independent record label in the world” and “the world's most fashionable label,” they closed their doors in ‘84.In 1981, ZE released a Christmas compilation album as a lark. Of course the album is noted for standout alternative tracks “Christmas Wrapping” and “Christmas on Riverside Drive.” Davitt Sigerson's “It's a Big Country” is a folksy little ditty that plays as a newsletter of sorts, tucked into a Christmas card. Unfortunately, some of the songs don't quite hit as hard. Suicide's “Hey, Lord” is a depressing number and Alan Vega's “No More Christmas Blues” feels like just the opposite.Synthesizer? Yep. Funk rhythms? Got ‘em. Bummer Christmas songs? For sure! So grab your record player, put “A Christmas Record,” and listen to this episode!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! Chuck found time over the USA July 4th break to dig into his big bag of promotional tracks mailed in by some of the best musical tastemakers in the world.Meanwhile, in a conversation with his friend Sean Brennan about their shared love of Balearic music, Chuck realized that much of this recent 2023 music promo he received was just right to create a presentation of fresh Balearic cuts, with that style of music dominating pretty much the first half of the show. And it's appropriate music for this episode which was presented live at the sunny pool at Charlie's Beach Club and Poolside Lounge in Santa Monica, California.Listen for fresh and hot Ibiza type stunners from Birds of Rhythm, North of the Island, Lanowa, Hot Toddy, Fuga Ronto, Danilo Braca, BROLORIZO, TEO and more. Plus special digs into August Darnell's (of Kid Creole & The Coconuts) unreleased catalog, and Prince jams from his non-single, album tracks.Tune into new broadcasts of FSQ, Thursday from 3 - 6 PM EST / 8 - 11 PM GMT.For more info visit: https://thefaceradio.com/fsq///Dig this show? Host Chuck Da Fonk is back at the poolside lounge in Santa Monica but the California sun doesn't seem to want to come out, so he warms up the space with a show open that includes 125 bpm house bangers which are remixes of the late 1980s works by the recently departed Queen of Rock N Roll Tina Turner. The digs continue into rare funk via shares of previously unreleased tracks from Kid Creole & The Coconuts and Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns. New records from Chaz Jankel and Tigerbalm are still being celebrated here with more tracks from those releases up in the mix this week. Plus the third hour of this episode carries burning hot new jams from Magic Source, Jitwam x Kraak & Smaak, Alex Kassian, Raven Maize x David Penn, and 79.5 x FSQ. It was 1976, and Disco was hot. While Donna Summer, Barry White, Gloria Gaynor, and the Salsoul Orchestra churned out the genre's early standards, there were also your usual oddities in the shelves, from the overtly sexy to the downright novelty. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was neither, and in fact, they weren't even Disco. However, their carefree lyrics and tight danceable musicianship fit beautifully with the times.Co-founded by brothers August Darnell (aka Kid Creole) and Stony Browder Jr., Dr. Buzzard's drew influences from the big-band and swing eras, as well as Soul, Latin, Jazz, and African sounds, and came up with a fresh and lush fusion that was ready for the funky feet.At its very core was the sensual, silky and exuberant voice of Cory Daye, who was more than happy to stay in the background and let the men call the shots. That was, of course, until they buckled under pressure and Cory had no choice but to step out front, give life to August's lyrics of the “tragic mulatto” and Stony's dazzling arrangements, and in the process, create one of the most enchanting postcards of the early Disco years.Note: In the episode we mention that Stony Browder Jr. passed on in 1991. He actually passed on in 2001. With 12 episodes in the till, there ain't no stopping us now, and you can't change that! We started out with big dreams of making it, but not in terms of gold, only in terms of good times. As we explored the boogie wonderland, we found songs that made us want to dance the night away. Songs that reached out to the heart, as if they were pleading, I want you to want me. We heard music that made us feel like being in love with a beautiful woman. There were times we wanted to just go up on the roof and stare at the shadows in the moonlight, pondering the existence of a truly logical song. In this episode we will do a minute by minute examination of the songs from the Billboard Chart of July 14, 1979. Now let's get on with the main event! As broadcast August 12, 2021 with extra coconut for you podcast creole speakers. Tonight we open the show celebrating the 71st birthday of Kid Creole, aka August Darnell, born on this date in The Bronx in 1950. The founder of both Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and The Coconuts, a true mischievous creative titan of the game. After the opener, we had nothing but new tunes beyond that in our first hour, with new joints from MF Robots, Paul & The Tall Trees, Brian Jackson, and so many other highly worthy candidates and friends of the program. For our 2nd hour, there was lots of good in the rock world this week, but very notable huge swings & misses by Guns n Roses, Tom Morello, and Maneskin that are such car crashes we could not help but listen to the wreckage on air. Great tunes otherwise from the likes of Dan Andriano & The Bygones, Jail Socks, and Slothrust as well to even out the palette.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Kid Creole & The Coconuts – EndicottMF Robots – Brand New DayMoses Patrou & The Soul Tune Allstars – Who's Gonna Save Me (From Myself)Sola Rosa – You Don't Know (Dizz1 remix)Paul & The Tall Trees – Love Doesn't Need To Be HeavyQuantic feat Nidia Gongora – Macumba de MareaPart II (34:22)El Michels Affair & Liam Bailey – FadedArjuna Oakes & Serebii – Satellites Brian Jackson & Jazz Is Dead – Bain de MinuitLittle Dragon – Water (FJK remix)Brandon Markell Holmes – Garden (Rouge Vogue remix)Fat Freddy's Drop – Bones (WAIRUNGA) Part III (65:01)Fake Names – It Will Take a LifetimeGuns n Roses – ABSURDTom Morello, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder – Highway to HellManeskin, Iggy Pop – I Wanna Be Your SlaveSlothrust – The Next Curse (ft Lzzy Hale)Part IV (95:04)Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – Go Get a Tattoo (ft Lynks)Dan Andriano and the Bygones – Sea LevelThe Last Gang – Noise Noise NoiseThe Vaccines – Alone StarJail Socks – Peace of MindThe Jaded Hearts Club – Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)
Content warning: This episode contains discussion of domestic abuse and violence against women (33:50–37:42). In this episode, we talk to the amazing Adele Bertei about her career as a singer, songwriter and the author of two terrific books, Peter & the Wolves & the new Why Labelle Matters. Starting with her wild life as a gay teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, we hear about her friend & mentor Peter Laughner, founder member of Pere Ubu and a tragically self-destructive troubadour who died back in 1977.Adele then talks us through her move to New York's East Village and her participation in the city's No Wave punk-funk scene as a member of James White & the Contortions — and as the leader of the all-girl Bloods. This leads on to discussion of ZE Records & August "Kid Creole" Darnell, audio clips of whom we hear in a 2016 conversation with Larry Jaffee... which in turn takes us on to Adele's hymn of love for Labelle, the trailblazing trio who morphed from '60s girl group into '70s Afrofuturists. RBP's co-hosts ask Adele about the group's manager Vicki Wickham (hear Vicki's own RBP podcast episode) and about Laura Nyro, Bobby Womack's Poet II, and female power & resistance in the decades before #MeToo.Finally, after noting the passing of Sally Grossman — widow of Bob Dylan's manager Albert & the "lady in red" on the cover of Bob's Bringing It All Back Home — Mark rounds up the highlights of his recent additions to the RBP Library, including Richard Goldstein's review of The Band's Big Pink, Philip Elwood's prescient 1970 appreciation of a young Bruce Springsteen playing live in San Francisco & the recently-recruited Maureen O'Grady interviewing new Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Jasper takes us out with thoughts on pieces about white appropriation of Black soul, plus an underwhelming 2000 "chart battle" between (insert polite cough) Westlife & Spice Girls...Many thanks to special guest Adele Bertei. Why Labelle Matters is published by UT Press and Peter & the Wolves by Smog Veil.Pieces discussed: Nona Hendryx, Labelle, Bobby Womack, August Darnell audio, Sally Grossman, Woodstock, Pere Ubu/Devo, Kid Creole, Chris Farlowe, The Monkees, The Band, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Love's Alone Again Or, Mick Taylor, Steel Mill, Ian Dury, Keith Levene, Millie Jackson, Screaming Lord Sutch, Westlife vs. Spice Girls, Le Tigre and Lily Allen/Joss Stone/Amy Winehouse.
