Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Legendary drummer Michael Shrieve announces the much-anticipated release of his album, “Drums of Compassion,” set to drop on May 24, 2024 on Trey Gunn's innovative label, 7D Media. This album is a testament to Shrieve's artistic journey, encapsulating over fifty years of musical exploration and collaboration with some of the most revered names in the industry. “Drums of Compassion” is not merely an album; it's an odyssey that began two decades ago inspired by the Dalai Lama's call for a Time of Compassion. The album boasts an ensemble of musical virtuosos, and their collective genius creates a tapestry of rhythmic brilliance that transcends conventional music boundaries, offering listeners an immersive sonic experience. Shrieve's collaboration with Soundmaster Jeff Greinke lays the foundation of the album with ambient, space-evoking melodies that serve as a backdrop to the dynamic percussive elements. Officially released on May 24, 2024. An as a very wise man once said … "MUSIC PROMPTS US TO RESPOND WITH OPEN-HEARTEDNESS INSTEAD OF JUDGMENT. (May 2021) Gil is a world renowned drummer who shares his deep passion and knowledge for Reggae drumming in this great episode. He takes us through all the sub genres such as ska, rocksteady, dub, and dancehall. Plus he teaches us about the legends in Reggae drumming such as Lloyd Knibb and Carlton Barrett and the gear that these Jamaican drummers would use when playing with icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry and many more. Here is some more info on Gil: Los Angeles native, Gil Sharone, is highly regarded as one of the most versatile session and touring drummers in the world, who is known for his creativity, authenticity and strong pocket. He is a multiple-time industry award winner as a drummer, but will often wear other hats as a co-writer, producer, and an educator/clinician. Gil came to notoriety in the rock world as a former member of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Puscifer, Marilyn Manson, Stolen Babies and Team Sleep. However, he is widely known as an expert in other genres. Reggae, ska and rocksteady were part of his earliest influences along with jazz, funk, hip hop and fusion. Gil has established himself in the Jamaican drumming styles, authoring an award winning DVD and book entitled Wicked Beats, after playing with legends Eek-A-Mouse, HR of Bad Brains, Dave Wakeling of The English Beat, Fishbone, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and more recently with Slightly Stoopid, Morgan Heritage, and his current reggae/dub outfit, Gil, Migs and Rog. Gil is also an active member of a genre bending music collective, Saudade, where you can hear his jazz fusion collaborations with jazz greats John Medeski, David Torn, Robert Thomas Jr., Dr. Know and Chuck Doom. Gil's work further extends into the film/television world, working with composers Tyler Bates and Paul Haslinger. His work can be heard in Deadpool 2, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, all three John Wick movies, The Punisher (Netflix), Kingdom and Stumptown. He has also contributed both as a player and co-writer on the DC Comics: Dark Nights Metal Soundtrack, and his most recent work can be heard in the musical score for the live action Cirque du Soleil show, R.U.N.

Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Starting the episode with some odd calls from the HOG-LINE HOTLINE*, move on to discuss the philosophy of object definement as a prerequisite to worship. What is Jesse's Object of worship? I think we landed on it's the act of worshipping an object. And then the universe turned inside out and how we're all bubbles floating in the ether of a parallel dimension. Pretty cool. Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. I have said two things all season long. The first is that we're going to be exploring a single topic for ten episodes, and that topic is fusion. But the second thing I've been saying is that what I'm talking about when I say the word fusion isn't a style or a genre, but a state of mind. It's not what you play, it's how you approach music-making.In previous episodes, we've talked about what people typically think of as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that more or less starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and branches out to include Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report. But my version of that continuum also includes early Seventies Santana, it includes the Fania All Stars collaborating with Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham, it includes adventurous funk and R&B fusion, like P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players and Slave, and it includes jazz-funk acts like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and George Duke.Vernon Reid is a guitarist who was born in England but grew up in New York. He's best known as the leader of Living Colour, and one of the co-founders of the Black Rock Coalition along with the late writer Greg Tate, but he's got a long and varied discography that encompasses solo material, duo and trio work with other guitarists like Bill Frisell, David Torn and Elliot Sharp, and guest appearances with a ton of groups from Public Enemy to the Rollins Band, Mick Jagger, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Santana, and many, many more. His solo album Mistaken Identity from 1996 is the only album to carry co-producer credits from Prince Paul and Teo Macero. Back in 2012, he made an album with a group called Spectrum Road which featured John Medeski on keyboards, Jack Bruce on bass, and Cindy Blackman Santana on drums — it was conceptually a tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime, but it's very much its own thing as well, so definitely check that out.Reid got his start, though, with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's band the Decoding Society. He played guitar, banjo, and guitar synth with that group, which had two bassists: Melvin Gibbs, who was on this podcast a couple of years ago, and Reverend Bruce Johnson, and then some horn players, mostly Zane Massey on saxophones and Henry Scott on trumpet. It's high-energy music that's also really melodic in a kind of post-Prime Time way — jazz, funk, rock, Texas blues and West African music all swirled together and thrown straight at your face at a hundred miles an hour. Their albums Nasty, Street Priest, Mandance, Barbeque Dog, Montreux Jazz Festival and Earned Dreams are all incredible. They're all out of print right now, too, but some of them are on streaming services, so dig up whatever you can. Reid has a new record out with the group Free Form Funky Freqs, a trio with bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who's also been on this podcast before, and drummer Calvin Weston, and as he explains in this conversation, it's full-on improv, starting from zero every time they play together, and because it's so limited – no rehearsals, no soundchecks with all three members – they know exactly how many times they've played together. The album represents their 73rd encounter. It's called Hymn Of The 3rd Galaxy, sort of a tribute to Return To Forever there, who had an album called Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, and you'll hear a little bit of the music late in the podcast. I think you'll really enjoy this episode. I've been a fan of Vernon Reid's music for about 35 years. The first Living Colour album came out when I was in high school, and I saw them play on the first Lollapalooza festival in the summer of 1991. And I interviewed him once before, about 10 years ago, when he was doing a multimedia presentation called Artificial Africa. So in this conversation, we talk about his work with the Decoding Society, about the Free Form Funky Freqs, about the whole wave of guitarists who came up at the same time he did, including Michael Gregory Jackson and Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly and Brandon Ross, as well as older players like James "Blood" Ulmer and Pete Cosey and Sonny Sharrock… we talk about a lot of things, and I'm just gonna end this introduction here, so you can dive in.MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE:Living Colour, “WTFF” (from Stain)Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society, “Iola” (from Mandance)Vernon Reid & Bill Frisell, “Size 10 1/2 Sneaks” (from Smash & Scatteration)Free Form Funky Freqs, “Outer Arm” (from Hymn of the 3rd Galaxy)
It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens.

I've been a synth-head for a very long time. As a result, I have these little personal dropping-off points of favorite bits of gear: Ensoniq ESQ-1, Roland JD-800, E-mu Proteus and Morpheus. So imagine my surprise when a recent parcel of Facebook paraded all of my favorite synths. And it was put out there by today's guest – Drew Schlesinger – who was deeply involved in sound design for synth preset for all these devices! Starting with the Casio CZ-101, making patch sheets and patch carts, Drew ended up as a working sound designer throughout the digital MIDI synth golden years. In our discussion, we talk about how he got started, the kind of machines that he found himself working on, highlights and lowlights of sound design, and how he moved on from there. We also talk a bit about his work with David Torn in a little apartment studio. You can follow the discussion/history on Facebook by following Drew on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/drewschlesinger1), and you can also hear the Torn album (Summer Synthesis 1978) here: https://drewschlesinger-davidtorn.bandcamp.com/releases Enjoy! Gil is a world renowned drummer who shares his deep passion and knowledge for Reggae drumming in this great episode.

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter I first heard Tim Berne on a John Zorn album – Spy Vs. Spy, from 1989, where the two of them, plus Mark Dresser on bass and Joey Baron and Michael Vatcher on drums, play 17 Ornette Coleman tunes in 40 minutes. It’s one of the most intense records you’ll ever hear in your life. They play almost all the tunes at hardcore punk speed, and the two drummers are delivering blast beats like they’re auditioning for Napalm Death. Some people love it, and some people fucking hate it. I'm in the former category. Anyway, Berne’s own music doesn’t always have that same punk rock aggression, but it’s definitely intense and can get very loud. He’s originally from upstate New York, but has been based in Brooklyn for basically his entire professional career, which started in the 1970s when he was studying with Julius Hemphill. Hemphill is Berne’s single biggest influence, as you’ll hear in this interview. Berne is very independent; he’s started two different independent labels to put out his own music – first Empire, which he used to make five albums in the late 70s, and later Screwgun, which continues to this day. He was signed to Columbia for a couple of years, though, and has made a bunch of records for ECM with his current primary band, Snakeoil. They’ve been together for about a decade. Berne’s bands tend to have great names – he’s led Hard Cell, Caos Totale, Science Friction, Bloodcount, and Big Satan, among others. He’s also currently a member of Broken Shadows, a quartet with Chris Speed on tenor sax, Reid Anderson on bass, and Dave King on drums. They play the music of Ornette Coleman, Julius Hemphill, Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden, and they have a couple of live albums you can get on Bandcamp and a studio LP that’s only available as part of a ridiculously expensive subscription box set from the Newvelle label. This interview was recorded last Thursday, November 5, which is why I mention obsessively refreshing Twitter at the beginning – we were both waiting for election results along with everything else. Anyway, we talk about a lot of subjects – Berne has been a really influential composer, particularly among 21st century jazz players from Brooklyn, so we discuss that, but we also talk about Julius Hemphill, about his various bands and his creative relationships with Matt Mitchell and David Torn, about his approach to composing and about the depth of his catalog, and much more. I had a really good time talking to him, and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to our conversation. For just $5 a month, you can help keep this show and Burning Ambulance as a whole active and thriving. Thanks! The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast strikes again. In this time of global pandemic, shutdowns of performing venues, and isolation of gigging professionals, it is both surprising and heartening to see that new music is still getting made. The past several shows have been a way to promote some of that new music in the hope of keeping progressive rock going and connecting artists with listeners. This time around, I have new music from German band Sproingg. In addition, I have quite a bit of music from prog's distant past. There's the usual Sound Chaser mix of styles. The Symphonic Zone goes over the top with two Norwegian epics. All that plus news of shows and releases on this edition of Sound Chaser. Playlist 1.

Junto a Joey Calderazzo (piano), Eric Revis (contrabajo) y Justin Faulkner (batería), Marsalis firma "The secret between the shadow and the soul". Ric Hordinski - “The rarest kind of virtuoso”For years, musicians in the know have recognized Ric Hordinski as the “guitarists’ guitarist.” For fans of acoustic music. Ric’s function as musical director (and producer) for artists like Phil Keaggy, David Wilcox, Over The Rhine and others has sometimes elevated him to a kind of underground mythic status.Ric has appeared on records with Jim James (my Morning Jacket) Bootsy Collins, Phil Keaggy, John Mayer, David Wilcox, Ben Harper, Richard Thompson, Tony Levin, Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Victor Wooten, Victoria Williams. Robbie Fulks and many others. As a live performer he’s shared the stage with a dizzying array of musicians: Johnny Cash, Moby, Bob Dylan, My Morning Jacket, Indigo Girls, and many others. He’s produced award-winning records for a host of folks including Over The Rhine, Wilcox and Phil Keaggy. On his own, hiding behind the Monk moniker, he released six independent records that featured alternately the songwriting craft he honed during his eight years in OTR, the ambient guitar that garnered demand as a studio musician and the ear for songcraft that makes him an excellent producer. He seems to be one of the few musicians able to straddle comfortably the distance between ground-breaking avant-garde explorations (witness his association with people like David Torn) and truly beautiful pop music. Paste Music has called him ” the rarest kind of virtuoso, the kind who knows when not to play” this penchant for understatement has it’s rewards: ric received a Grammy nomination in 2003.

¡Felices vacaciones!

Legendary Drummer, Michael Shrieve spends time with On The Scene SF/O for a 2-Part conversation. Shrieve is often hailed as one of the highlights for his fiery drum solo during Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice”, as captured in the 1969 Festival’s film, Woodstock. He seeks out interesting people, and artists to embolden his creative output. Considered a music experimentalist, the drummer, percussionist, producer, and composer, has been involved in a wide array of innovative projects since his tenure in Santana, ranging from electronic music, to fusion, jazz, improvised music, and appeared on notable commercial outings, such as the Rolling Stones’ Emotional Rescue (on percussion) in 1980, and later on Mick Jagger’s “She’s the Boss” album. To illustrate the type of forward thinking musicians he associates with, collaborations include Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood, Al Di Meola, Klaus Schulze, David Beal, Andy Summers, Steve Roach, David Torn, Jonas Hellborg, Bill Frisell, Mark Isham, Jeff Beal, Wayne Horvitz, Zakir Hussain, Airto, and Jack DeJohnette. We begin by speaking about the new release, Santana IV, featuring the remaining members of the original Woodstock era of the band, with- Guitarist, Carlos Santana, Guitarist, Neal Schon, Vocalist and Keyboardist, Gregg Rolie, Percussionist, Mike Carabello, with newer Santana collaborators, percussionist, Karl Perazzo, Bassist, Benny Rietveld, and guest vocalist, Ronald Isley. With such a storied career, it is inevitable that there is much to mine in these conversations. In Part 1, you will get to hear some of the inside scoop on Santana IV, encounters with Bassist, Jaco Pastorius, while residing in New York, his forthcoming recording with Jack DeJohnette, Zakir Hussain, and others, as well as Shrieve’s experience meeting the classic John Coltrane Quartet, and his longtime friendship with Drummer, Elvin Jones. Tracks Featured throughout Episode #008 Part 1 of 2: Darkside – Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder Yambu – Santana IV Renewal – Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder Pop Raladrao – Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder Fillmore East – Santana IV Crossing The Line – Go (Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve) You and Me - Go Too (Stomu Yamashta)
We continue on with Part 2 of our discussion with original Santana drummer, Michael Shrieve. As we discussed in Part 1, Shrieve is documented on the studio album, Santana IV, released in March of 2016, featuring members of the original Santana band from that Woodstock era group- Guitarist, Carlos Santana, Guitarist, Neal Schon, Vocalist and Keyboardist, Gregg Rolie, Percussionist, Mike Carabello, with newer Santana collaborators, percussionist, Karl Perazzo, Bassist, Benny Rietveld, and guest vocalist, Ronald Isley. Earlier in the year Michael also released his latest recording of latin, rock and funk inspired fusion with his group Spellbinder. We will speak more about this group and its future plans. It is in Part 2 that we get to hear about important collaborations with Klaus Schulze, David Beal, Andy Summers, Steve Roach, David Torn, Jonas Hellborg, Bill Frisell, Mark Isham, Wayne Horvitz, and Marty Fogel. The resultant recordings of which outline an extremely productive and important output of creative music inspired by electronic music developments, jazz, film, and a return to his roots. Tracks Featured throughout Episode #008 Part 2 of 2: Communique: Approach Spiral – Michael Shrieve, Transfer Station Blue (With Klaus Schulze and Kevin Shrieve) Izibongo – Michael Shrieve and David Beal, The Big Picture Tribes – Michael Shrieve and Steve Roach, The Leaving Time Four Winds – Michael Shrieve, Stiletto Las Vegas Tango – Michael Shrieve, Stiletto Stiletto – Michael Shrieve, Stiletto Unlikely Beast Slayer – Marty Fogel, Many Bobbing Heads at Last Flamingos – Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder, Live at Tost Trilloni – Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder
Ronin electric guitars are instantly recognizable thanks to their unmistakable Foilbucker and Stratofoil pickups. Dig a little bit deeper and you'll also discover that these guitars have another unique characteristic – they're all made out of reclaimed old growth redwood. On today's podcast, we talk with John Reed of Ronin about their creations, why they're using redwood for their guitar bodies and how those distinctive pickups came to be. We also hear from guitarist Dan Phelps on what it's like to play these guitars in a variety of settings. Ronins may be best known as the guitar of choice for audio experimenter David Torn but, as you'll hear, they can be used in a wide variety of settings. All told, it's a fun chat about woods, guitarmaking, the magic behind goldfoil pickups and more. www.fretboardjournal.comhttp://roninguitars.com
A slowly developing amalgamation of mixed-genre madness, fusing ambient, experimental & jazz soundscapes into a mixture of quiet deconstruction. "Slow Decay" is a collaborative mix from Low Light Mixes & Ambient Landscape. We've each done mixes for each other but we thought it would be cool make a mix in which we both contributed alternating sections. Gene(ambient landscape) came up with the title and I started things off with a couple of cuts. I sent it to Gene, he added a few more, sent it back to me, I added more tracks and so on and so on. Until we had a fascinating 1 hour & 16 minute journey. I love how things turned out. The combination of ecm-style jazz and ambient and experimental music worked perfectly.

Here's an interview from the early days of The Jazz Session with guitarist David Torn. This is what I had to say about him back then: He’s a film composer whose music you’ve heard in Friday Night Lights, Believe In Me, and The Order. He’s also contributed tones and textures to films like this year’s Best Picture winner, The Departed, and the 2000 hit Traffic. Before his film days, he was known for daring musical collaborations on albums such as Cloud About Mercury (ECM, 1987). And he’s worked as a guitarist and/or producer for everyone from David Bowie and David Sylvian to John Legend and Tori Amos. David Torn has returned to ECM after two decades for prezens (ECM, 2007), an adventurous record that features Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey. Learn more at DavidTorn.net.
