(First aired on WUTC 2/10/24)The Mason Jennings History:Mason Jennings was born on the Island of Hawaii, but at an early age his family moved to the opposite of tropical, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At 13, he started playing guitar and writing songs. Mason later dropped out of high school and decided to move to Minneapolis to pursue his musical career. Jennings made this decision after a friend of his father's sent him cassette tapes of the Replacements, Jayhawks, and Prince. After non-stop listening he felt like it would be a great home for his music.Jennings produced his self-titled debut album in 1997 on a Tascam analog four-track in the living room of a rented home, playing all instruments himself. In October 1998, he began a weekly gig at Minneapolis' 400 Bar. The two-week gig ended up lasting four months. Birds Flying Away, Mason's second record, revealed his penchant for singing first-person narratives of imaginary rustic characters. In 2002, Jennings released a studio album, Century Spring, and a "fans only" collection of acoustic songs, Simple Life. Mason released all three albums (and re-released his earlier albums) on his own record label, Architect Records. In June of 2005, Jennings signed with Glacial Pace, a subsidiary of Sony's Epic Records headed by Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. Minnesota's Star Tribune credited Brock with convincing Mason to sign after he opened for several Modest Mouse shows in 2004. Jennings had long avoided the major labels, citing desires to maintain creative control and dodge big-label politics. In early 2008, Mason signed with Jack Johnson's record label, Brushfire Records. Jennings released In the Ever in May 2008. Blood of Man soon followed and received a coveted 4-Star review in Rolling Stone, who also cited, “What makes Mason Jennings one of the best singer songwriters you've never heard of is his ragged intimate voice and his simple ruminations on God, war, hope and gratitude.”With many more albums and projects in between, we fast forward to the release of Wild Dark Metal in 2016. He got divorced and after taking some time off to focus on painting, to recover from depression and to heal from agoraphobia, he began touring again. He remarried in 2018 and released an album of love songs inspired by his new relationship, Songs From When We Met, available now.Mason Jennings Tracklist:ButterflyChemical CarKeepin' It RealNothingSomething About Your LoveUnited States Global EmpireThe Light, Part IIDrinking as Religion Darkness Between the FirefliesCursive PrayersOther Artists Tracklist:Bob Dylan – “Tangled Up in Blue”Mötley Crue – “Dr. Feelgood”Mötley Crue – “Kickstart My Heart”The Beatles – “Get Back”Hank Williams – “I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive”Gordon Lightfoot – “Only Love Would Know” Hosted on Acast. WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with folk-pop singer/songwriter Mason Jennings, who performs live Sunday at City Winery in Washington D.C. They discuss his 25-year music career from "Lemon Grove Avenue" to "Be Here Now." (Royalty-Free Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
Kailon Johnson-Loud, known professionally as Kaj Loud, is an African-American recording artist and entertainer who was born in Vallejo, CA. He attributes his musical ability in part to his father as well as his 3 biggest musical inspirations: Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Logic. He also cites long term friend, Tunez, as the reason he decided to take music seriously. Destined to bring his own unique flavor into the game. Pepe also plays Piano, he looked for many years in lots of different skips but to no avail, so he had to buy one. Influenced by Mason Jennings, Lemon Jelly and the Flaming Lips he produces and writes catchy songs that are easy on the ear, with good strong meaningful lyrics.
Mason Jennings has the most interesting songwriting process I've come across. Since he was around 13 years old, the Minneapolis songwriter has had songs just come to him while randomly playing guitar and singing. He gets in touch with his subconscious and discovers his songs there very naturally. He also never writes the songs down. That's right, he commits each song to memory and only writes them down for liner notes. Born in Honolulu and raised in Pittsburgh, he chose Minneapolis to settle into his music career. There, he found lots of success and managed to avoid the ever-tempting major label record contracts, which were being offered as high as $1 million. Wanting to remain in control of his creativity, he opted to stay independent until he signed with Glacial Pace, a subsidiary of Sony's Epic Records headed by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. He released Boneclouds in 2006 and gained much acclaim. An album with Jack Johnson's label and an appearance on the soundtrack to Todd Haynes Bob Dylan film I'm Not There, solidified his presence in the folk mainstream.Fast forward to his latest album (his 14th studio record), Real Heart, co-produced by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, is an ode to the acoustic guitar and a love letter to songwriting. Lately, Mason's been working on himself through therapy and self-reflection. In the last few years, he's been working on conquering and controlling depression, agoraphobia and living a sober life. He's also gotten married again to Josie Jennings and the couple just recently welcomed their son Western in March 2022. A lot of these themes appear on Real Heart. We dig into those as well as his painting, the lake he lives on and Painted Shield, his synth-based rock and roll band with Stone Gossard and Matt Matt Chamberlain. Mason's a very special person and I'm grateful for this conversation!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about the second Painted Shield album, which finds Mason Jennings, Brittany Davis, and Matt Chamberlain further exploring their sonic palette. The guitarist discusses developing Painted Shield into a multiple vocalist group, as well as releasing the song “4th of July” while the world is on the brink of war. Stone also addresses the comparisons to his other offshoot project, Brad. On that subject, we're told that there is another Brad album in the works that will be using demos and lost vocal takes from the late Shawn Smith, which could come out later this year. From there, the attention is turned to Pearl Jam, who recently announced their rescheduled Gigaton tour dates (get tickets here!). Gossard tells us about relearning tracks from the band's latest LP for a third time, the possibility of a Lost Dogs Pt. 2, and wanting to make looser records at a quicker pace. To that point, he confirms that, yes, Pearl Jam have started working on their next album. "We've recorded some songs. We're on our way," he says. "We're making music." Take a listen to Stone Gossard discuss new music from Pearl Jam, Painted Shield, and Brad now. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mason Jennings over Zoom video! Minneapolis songwriter Mason Jennings has shared his new LP "Real Heart". Jennings calls it "the unabashed folk record that I have been wanting to make for years," pointing to the project's warm mix of acoustic guitar, unforced vocals, and autobiographical lyrics. At the same time, Real Heart also reaches beyond the genre's boundaries, making room for nuanced layers of horns, strings, and piano. The result is a record that both reclaims and redefines Mason Jennings' role as a leading light in the folk community, with production from Malfunkshun's Regan Hagar and Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard.Jennings and Gossard are ongoing collaborators in the supergroup Painted Shield, who released their 2021 debut album on Loosegroove, the influential indie label that Gossard founded back in 1994 issued records from acts such as Critters Buggin, Malfunkshun, Weapon of Choice and Devilhead, and was the launching point for Queens of the Stone Age's debut album in 1998. Real Heart is the sound of a musician easing back into his own skin and marking art not only on his own terms, but on his own turf, too. Jennings began recording the album at his lake house outside St. Paul, Minnesota, strumming each song while staring at the water outside. We want to hear from you! Jesse and Anna use Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 and Isaiah 43:1-7 to explore what being “claimed” by God might mean or look like. Is it possession and ownership or might it be something deeper or more nuanced? Is it one-sided or mutual? These scriptures clearly bring up the theme of baptism, but both Anna and Jesse find the idea of claiming or being claimed by God ties to the end of life and memorials. Anna brings up a scene from the movie “Dont Look Up” (*spoiler alert!*) and how it relates for her. Jesse recommends a song “How deep is that river” by Mason Jennings that resonates with the passages from today. Anna Hoesly is a Co-Pastor and Organizer at Storyline Community in Milwaukie, Oregon. Jesse Christopherson is a Pastor at Milwaukie Lutheran Church in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and singer-songwriter Mason Jennings have teamed up as Painted Shield and sit down with Kyle Meredith to talk about their self-titled debut album. Together, they discuss how they teamed up and recruited Matt Chamberlain, Brittany Davis, and John Congletan. Gossard tells us of opening his vault of demos for the music while Jennings describes working in a band for the first time and writing lyrics about time as escapism. Gossard’s Loosegroove Records was also resurrected for the project, and Gossard details plans for the label to release a final Brad album and a previously unreleased 1982 Duff McKagan record. On the Pearl Jam side, Gossard discusses what it’s been like to release Gigaton without touring, the anxiety dreams he’s having with this being the longest he’s ever gone without playing Pearl Jam music, how the band is slowing down, plans for No Code and Yield box sets, and recording more PJ music. In this week's jam-packed episode, the guys first welcome their doctoral advisor, mentor, and friend, the President of Chicago Theological Seminary, the Rev. Dr. Stephen G. Ray, to talk about the impending election and what happens next in the eventuality of one candidate or another winning the Presidency. In the second segment, the guys make some predictions for Tuesday's election and talk a little bit about the efforts to suppress the vote in swing-states. Of course in between the two segments the guys will bless some hearts (and Jamie will continue his ongoing battle against Jerry Falwell, Jr). The show will close out with Marc and Jamie doing some Front Porch Musing about the work of Heather Cox Richardson and the music of Mason Jennings. Go vote!
Stone Gossard is a founding member and guitarist in Pearl Jam. While the pandemic put Pearl Jam's tour plans on hold, Stone went back to a project he started 6 years ago, Painted Shield. It includes singer-songwriter Mason Jennings, former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain, and keyboardist/singer Brittany Davis. Stone describes the sound of the band ('messy American rock'), the impact of John Lennon, whether artists should speak up politically and who he says started the Seattle scene. You might be surprised by the answer.
The sonic territory covered in the latest RFUS is pretty remarkable, as we could only do with Melanie Shrawder who worked for the Songlines radio promo company for 14 years & prior to that KUT in Austin, TX and WYEP in her native Pittsburgh. We started out talking Pirates & Steelers & Penguins, went straight into her love of Phil Collins & Genesis, touched on her youthful appreciation of everything from Journey to Juice Newton (bolstered by the Columbia House & BMG Record Clubs). We talked about her tenure booking acts like Spoon & Gary Clark Jr. for their 1st radio sessions, booking Blackalicious for a live session (which they graciously kept FCC clean!), great SXSW memories (including the late, great Rock Hall of Famer Ian McLagan) and then moving on to the promo world, helping the likes of Arcade Fire, The Avett Brothers, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, Chance The Rapper and yes, Spoon, reach bigger national audiences through the radio airwaves. There of course was mention of her all-time favorite Stevie Wonder, and we talked about the diversity challenges the AAA format faces. We also discussed our mutual long-term appreciation of Pearl Jam & it all comes full circle with a new PJ side project that features Stone Gossard & acclaimed singer/songwriter Mason Jennings, who spent much of his youth in Pittsburgh. Plus a couple other new things Melanie has been digging lately at the end (full songs in Anchor version only). And earmuff alert: there is some strong language sprinkled in, but hey it's a podcast!
In this episode John and Alan are joined by longtime singer/songwriter Dan Navarro who, with his former songwriting partner Eric Lowen, has written songs for The Bangles, Jackson Browne, Dionne Warwick and many others including the #1 smash hit "We Belong" made popular by Pat Benatar. In addition Dan is a voice actor in Los Angeles and works on movies and shows like The Lorax, The Book Of Life, Family Guy, and American Dad. We are also joined by a common friend, Twin Cities drummer Noah Levy, originally from his own Minneapolis band The Honeydogs. Noah has played with Peter Frampton, BoDeans, Five for Fighting, Mason Jennings, Martin Zellar, and others. He currently plays drums for Brian Setzer in both the Orchestra and the Rockabilly Riot. We discuss everything from Shakeys Pizza to the interpersonal difficulties between songwriters. Dan talks about being a buyer for Tower Records and working as an assistant to the manager of the Moody Blues. Noah talks about what it takes to do something impromptu on television when dealing with a 17 piece horn section of music readers. Dan takes us through the entire process of writing "We Belong" and he shares some stories about his cousin Dave. Noah talks about building a studio with his son Issac and his current escapades in the Minneapolis scene and much much more. We close with "on the road" Trivia. Enjoy. Meet Scot Chisholm, CEO & co-founder of Classy - A social enterprise fundraising software focused on helping non-profits grow their revenue. Classy was named while he and his friends were first brainstorming the concept of Classy while watching Anchor Man - Stay Classy San Diego. Classy is now a 200+ employee SaaS startup that has now processed over $1 billion in funds for non-profits through its platform. Scot grew up in Massachusetts and went to UMass Amherst where he spent only one semester as a computer science major before switching to engineering. He was drawn to San Diego when his college friends had moved out here while he was finishing college. When he graduated he convinced his dad and brother to drive cross-country with him and he landed in Ocean Beach. The day he got here he saw a pizza shop that advertised ‘Boston-style pizza’. He was curious and stopped in. As it so happens, this was the first day the shop was open and he asked if he could be their first employee. And he was hit by the entrepreneurship bug. If you’re curious to know which pizza place this is (it’s still around!), listen to the full episode. While serving pizzas he talked to a lot of customers, one of whom worked at Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) which is how Scot ended up at his job there. During his time at BAH he started Classy as a side project. It came to be that he and his friends had all been affected by cancer in some way and they wanted to volunteer with the American Cancer Society (ACS). Unfortunately, it was hard to get involved and their only option was the Walk For The Cure. Being in their mid-20’s, Scot and his friends all agreed that there had to be a different way to help than walking for 24 hours. They decided to do a pub crawl around Pacific Beach to raise money. You’d think it’d be really easy to GIVE an organization like the ACS monetary donations. Turns out, it’s not. He was told he’d have to attend the Walk For The Cure and donate the money through that event. The same event they wanted to avoid. And Classy was born. Classy didn’t start as a tech company. It started as an organization that held events to engage with the people who would donate, so they knew what exactly they were donating to. And these were no small events - they held a music festival and were able to get headliners like Matisyahu, Bassnectar, Mason Jennings and attracted more than 5,000 people. Their tangled system of payment software soon wasn’t able to support them anymore and only then did they set out to become a tech company to create a solution that would work for them. This was around 2009-2010 and was first a way for people to purchase tickets and donate money to their specific events. Once the organizations learned about Classy they started approaching Scot asking if they could use the platform to collect donations that weren’t tied to a certain event. Lightbulb moment. Fast-forward and Classy was now in the UCSD Springboard program, CONNECT. Getting investors and support was a challenge since they were an events company trying to pivot to SaaS. It’s hard to imagine that these same people are questioning their judgment now that Classy just hit 1 billion dollars in collected donations! Listen to the full episode to hear how he and Classy went full circle with the ACS which includes what could have been a very awkward conversation with their CFO. Scot describes the San Diego tech scene as being a 2.0 version and he’s proud to be one of the leaders in this stage. During 1.0, Scot looked up to companies like Active. For 2.0, he’s looking to non-San Francisco based companies who are integrating and developing their cities as they grow, companies like HubSpot and MailChimp Hear Scot talk more about their path to funding and San Diego’s interest in mission-driven companies, Classy’s growth in Downtown San Diego, and what he thinks the future of e-commerce philanthropy will be. Check out Scot’s favorites: Tacos - Ortiz’s Taco Shop in Point Loma and Colima's Mexican Food in North Park. Coffee - Pappalecco, more recently it’s Peets who ‘has the best espresso’. Beer - Sculpin. Alpine Brewing is also a new favorite. Jacob and Ryan kick off the show with more inane conversation. Ryan talks about his hate of Celine Dion, while Jacob complains about Two Princes by Spin Doctors. They couldn't help but talk about the latest rumors about Star Wars: Episode VII. Ryan is still making excuses as to why he hasn't yet watched Jacob's movie. And speaking of Jacob's movie - you can go order it through our sponsor, Amazon.com. The movie is called Death By VHS. Jacob directed the segment called Lepus which he co-wrote with his Gorram Nerd Hour co-host Brian Smith, with camera work by Atomic Fallout Society's own David Sabal. It is an Abnormal Entertainment family affair. Inspired by songwriter Mason Jennings' tune "I Love You and Buddha Too," Rev. Ken Beldon says whatever we believe, love is the main thing. Our lives have one common destiny. But he knows love is often met with fundamentalism or violence. How do we love then? Rev. Ken expands on words from Thoreau, Dan Gottlieb, Alice Walker, and Humberto Maturana, who said, "Love...is the only emotion that expands intelligence."
