In this episode of "In the Trenches with Dave Lapham," former NFL offensive lineman and Bengals analyst Dave Lapham delivers an in-depth breakdown of the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason plans, focusing on free agency, roster construction, and the team's approach to managing the salary cap. Lapham dives into the Bengals' strategy, emphasizing their focus on versatility, responsible spending, and avoiding the pitfalls of dead money. Lapham begins by highlighting the Bengals' key re-signings, including Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, and Cody Ford. He emphasizes these players' versatility, noting that they can play multiple positions and contribute in various ways on the field. Lapham points out that re-signing these players allows the Bengals to maintain continuity and familiarity within their system. The discussion then shifts to the Bengals' approach to free agency, with Lapham analyzing the team's signings and releases. He notes that the Bengals have been active in retaining their own players and adding depth to their roster. He also discusses the challenges of managing the salary cap, particularly when it comes to signing high-profile players like Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson, in addition to Joe Burrow's existing contract. Lapham delves into the intricacies of contract structures, explaining how the Bengals prioritize upfront payment to players and structuring contracts to avoid dead money. He contrasts this approach with that of other teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, which have struggled with salary cap issues due to large contracts with significant dead money implications. The episode also explores the Bengals' needs on both sides of the ball. Lapham discusses the importance of strengthening the defensive line and finding a replacement for Alex Cappa at the guard position. He mentions several potential free agent targets and discusses the team's options for filling these needs. Lapham emphasizes that the Bengals are committed to building a competitive team while being fiscally responsible. He highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy salary cap and avoiding the boom-and-bust cycles that can plague teams that overspend or mismanage their finances. The discussion concludes with Lapham discussing the importance of team chemistry and the desire of players like Mike Gesicki to play alongside Joe Burrow and the Bengals' talented receiving corps. He notes that the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl and be part of a winning culture can be a significant factor in players' decisions, even if it means taking a slightly smaller contract. This episode provides valuable insights into the Bengals' off-season strategy and approach to building a sustainable, competitive team. Dave Lapham's expertise and analysis offer fans a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Bengals as they navigate the complexities of NFL free agency and roster construction. Watch Off the Bench Presented by UDF with Chatterbox Sports Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. LIVE on the Chatterbox Sports YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE to the channel to ensure you never miss a thing. As of March 10, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals have kicked off the NFL free agency period with a strategic focus on retaining key contributors and bolstering their roster for the upcoming season. With the new league year set to begin on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET, the Bengals are navigating a pivotal offseason, balancing the retention of core players with the need to address defensive and offensive line weaknesses. Here's a look at their moves so far and the context surrounding them. One of the Bengals' earliest confirmed moves was re-signing tight end Mike Gesicki to a three-year contract extension, announced on March 10. Gesicki, who had a standout 2024 season with the most receptions by a Bengals tight end in 43 years, provides quarterback Joe Burrow with a reliable target. This move underscores Cincinnati's intent to maintain offensive continuity, especially with wide receiver Tee Higgins on the franchise tag ($26.17 million for 2025) and Ja'Marr Chase poised for a massive extension that could make him the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback. The Gesicki signing ensures depth at a position that lacked stability last season. On the offensive line, the Bengals extended guard/tackle Cody Ford with a two-year deal on March 10. Ford, who signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract in 2024, offers versatility and depth. With the release of veteran guard Alex Cappa on March 3, freeing up cap space, Cincinnati is clearly prioritizing flexibility along the line. The team's projected $53.1 million in cap space (ninth-most in the NFL) gives them room to pursue additional linemen, potentially targeting free agents like Kevin Zeitler or Morgan Moses to protect Burrow. Defensively, the Bengals made a splash by signing former Packers defensive tackle T.J. Slaton to a two-year, $15.1 million deal. Slaton, known for his run-stopping prowess (third in run stop win rate in 2024 per NFL Next Gen Stats), addresses a glaring need after Cincinnati ranked fourth-worst in expected points added against the run last season. With defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins released on February 21 and Trey Hendrickson seeking a trade, Slaton's addition is a step toward rebuilding the interior line. The Bengals also re-signed defensive tackle B.J. Hill to a three-year, $33 million deal, signaling a commitment to continuity despite his age (30 in April). With $40-53 million in cap space, the Bengals are poised for more moves. Potential targets include edge rushers or linebackers to replace Hendrickson or Germaine Pratt (who requested a trade), ensuring a defense that faltered in 2024 doesn't sink their playoff hopes again. Free agency is just beginning, and Cincinnati's proactive start suggests a busy offseason ahead.
Maxx Crosby signs a 3-year, $106.5 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders. Raiders sign former Bengals guard Alex Cappa to a two-year, $11.2 million deal that includes $5.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. Former UNLV QB and current voice of the Rebels, Caleb Herring joins Cofield & Company to detail the UNLV players' results from the NFL Combine, review the criticism towards Shedeur Sanders following the combine, and give his thoughts on Maxx Crosby's 3-year extension with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Head coach of San Jose State men's basketball, Tim Miles joins Cofield & Company to recap the Spartans' 83-56 loss to Colorado State, detail the impressive performance of UNLV in the last stretch of the regular season, review which players should receive the player of the year in the Mountain West Conference, and share how he became one of the only coaches to be kicked out of an NCAA game. Las Vegas Review Journal sports columnist, Adam Hill joins Cofield & Co. to discuss Maxx Crosby's 3-year contract extension with the Las Vegas Raiders, review the Las Vegas Raiders signing of offensive lineman Alex Cappa, and give his thoughts on the reports that Shedeur Sanders was brash and arrogant during his team interviews at the NFL Combine.

While members of the Cincinnati Bengals have been doing some offseason work on their own, this week, the real work begins as players come together for some basic workouts as a team. For Bengals right guard Alex Cappa, the thrill of returning to Cincinnati and the prospect of working with new right tackle Trent Brown is invigorating. His commitment to his role in propelling the Bengals towards another Super Bowl, and his aspiration to secure a Super Bowl ring for all the Bengals offensive linemen, is truly inspiring. Cappa jumped In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss some of his new teammates, getting ready for another NFL season, and more.

Dave Lapham joined Dave Berk following another big win by the Cincinnati Bengals, who are now 5-3 on the season following their 24-18 victory over the Buffalo Bills in front of 66,965 highly energized fans dressed in orange and black. Lapham talks about the rise of the Bengals' tight ends after many fans screamed for the Bengals' front office to make a move before the trade deadline. Tanner Hudson, who was moved to the active roster instead of making a trade, pulled in four Joe Burrow passes for 45 yards. At the same time, Drew Sample showed he can do more than a blocker at the line of scrimmage with three receptions for 30 yards, including a touchdown, and first-year tight end Irv Smith Jr. enjoyed his best game as a member of the Bengals with three receptions for 26 yards and a score. While Joe Mixon may not have had the kind of day many hoped for running the ball, he did have a touchdown on 14 carries for 37 yards while also adding five receptions for 31 yards/ The offensive line flexed their muscles with double teams between center Ted Karras and guards Alex Cappa and Cordell Volson, while left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. showed off his athletic ability by pulling and opening holes. But while it was easy to talk about Burrow and the offense, the play of Lou Anarumo's defense came up big again, with Cam Taylor-Britt adding another interception and linebacker Germaine Pratt teamed with safety Nick Scott to punch the ball out of the hands of Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid to end a drive early in the fourth quarter. Lap also discusses where he feels the Bengals are at after their tough start but huge recovery with the Houston Texans coming up Sunday afternoon in Paycor Stadium before a short turnaround to play AFC North rival the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, then followed the following weekend with another rival the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack returned to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss the offensive line's play during the early parts of training camp and their first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Pollack and Lapham discuss the finer details of building a successful offensive line in the NFL while also discussing the Bengals projected starting five, Orlando Brown Jr., Cordell Volson, Ted Karras, Alex Cappa, and Jonah Williams, along with players fighting for backup roles who played against the Packers, Max Scharping, Jackson Kirkland, Trey Hill, Ben Brown, and Nate Gilliam. As Pollack told Lapham, there is no secret sauce when mastering the mundane of offensive line play.

This episode of In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, was taped before Brown signed his contract and was not part of the conversation. Cincinnati Bengals center Ted Karras returns to In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss the Bengals 2022 season that ended in the AFC Championship Game. In his first season with the Bengals, Karras provided outstanding leadership along the offensive line as the Bengals, after a slow start, ran off a 10-game winning streak before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. In his return to In The Trenches, Karras talks about the season and the growth of the offensive line, including the loss of La'el Collins, Alex Cappa, and Jonha Williams to injury and the job Jackson Carman, Hakeem Adeniji, and Max Scharping did in their place and the overall performance of rookie Cordell Volson. Learn more about the comparison between Tom Brady, who Karras played with and was part of two Super Bowl Championships while with the New England Patriots, and his new teammate Joe Burrow. Karras also talks about spending some of his spring helping his father, Ted Karras Jr., at his new job as head football coach of Marian University and his successful off-the-field project in helping The Village of Merici with The Cincy Hat project. It's always exciting when two former NFL offensive linemen talk about life In The Trenches. All Bengals fans will want to watch this episode of In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, as we welcome back Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack. Coach Pollack had the luxury of having his main five offensive linemen for 15 games this season before, one-by-one-by-one, he lost La'el Collins, Alex Cappa, and Jonah Williams in each of the last three games played. Pollack knows no one will feel sorry for him or the Bengals when they take the field Sunday afternoon in Buffalo to take on the Bills in AFC Divisional Playoff action. However, he's stressed all season to Jackson Carman, Hakeem Adeniji, Max Scharping, D'Ante Smith, and Isaiah Prince; they were one play away from starting and a significant role in the team's overall success this season. Pollack and Lap talk about the win over the Ravens. How their AFC North rival's defense is a lot like their upcoming opponent, along with some of the players the offensive line will have to account for to protect quarterback Joe Burrow and open running lanes for Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine as Bills Ed Oliver, Greg Rousseau, and Tremaine Edmunds will look to keep the Bengals from advancing to the AFC Championship Game the following weekend.
Jonah Williams suffered another kneecap dislocation and along with Alex Cappa is considered week-to-week, so Jackson Carman may be in line to take over at left tackle. We break down that obstacle for this offense to overcome, which includes the need for Bengals skill players not named Ja'Marr Chase to step up. Plus, defensive line depth is showing real signs of growth and Zac Taylor seems to be the right fit for the Bengals in the big moments.Find and follow Locked On Bengals on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-bengals-daily-podcast-on-the-cincinnati-bengals/id1159723162Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AObc0lh0WmQl5fJVgtajsStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-bengalsGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vbG9ja2Vkb25iZW5nYWxz?sa=X&ved=0CAYQrrcFahcKEwio_sXtj8nuAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAgJames Rapien and Jake Liscow take you inside the Bengals with the latest news, unique analysis, and insight on your favorite team, every day on Locked On Bengals. Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan jumps back In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss what happened against the Buffalo Bills and updated status of safety Damar Hamlin and how the Bengals moved past what happened to return to the Paycor Stadium turf to beat the Baltimore Ravens and leave no doubt, the Bengals are back-to-back AFC North Champions. Callahan talks about the Bengals' win over their divisional rival this past Sunday, only to turn around and start his prep work for a third match-up t his season. Covered during our informative conversation is the loss of right guard Alex Cappa to injury, leaving the Bengals without two of their season-long starters along the revamped offensive line in back-to-back games as La'el Collins went down against the Patriots and Cappa the Ravens. What is expected of replacements Hakeem Adeniji at right tackle and Max Sharping at right guard? Callahan talks about both players and more as we start working towards a primetime match-up between the Ravens and Bengals on Sunday night, with the winner advancing to the next round of the AFC Playoffs.
The Cincinnati Bengals (12-4) beat the Baltimore Ravens (10-7) to leave no doubt about who the real AFC North champs are. Now they face their rivals again in the playoffs. The final week of the NFL regular season is now over, with the Cincinnati Bengals on an eight-game winning streak after beating the Baltimore Ravens 27-16 at Paycor Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals finished with the No. 3 seed and will welcome back John Harbaugh and the Ravens for their Wild Card game on Sunday night at 8:15 pm on NBC and the First Star Logistics Bengals Radio Network. Joe Burrow and the offense were not sharp, only posting 257 total yards of offense as Burrow went 25 of 42 for 215 yards and one touchdown to Ja'Marr Chase. Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine combined for 17 carries for 45 yards and a Mixon touchdown. The Bengals' defense gave up 386 yards but posted four sacks and two interceptions while also recovering two fumbles, including a Joseph Ossai touchdown after Trey Hendrickson stripped Ravens quarterback Anthony Brown. One primary concern is the injury to Bengals right guard Alex Cappa who might be out for the rest of the season. Adding Cappa to the loss of La'el Collins a few weeks ago means the Bengals will need another player to step forward and fill the need. Dave Lapham was on the call for the game and jumped In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss the win, season, and upcoming rematch in the Wild Card round against the Ravens.
After a rough start to the season, the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line had come together, becoming the group offensive line coach Frank Pollack expected when he stressed he was looking for an offensive line full of "Glass Eaters" after the signing of center Ted Karras, right guard Alex Cappa, and right tackle La'el Collins in free agency and the drafting of rookie left guard of Cordell Volson when teamed with left tackle Jonah Williams. The Bengals are currently on a five-game winning streak, and while several players have stepped forward during the streak to help secure wins, the play of the offensive line can be credited to giving quarterback Joe Burrow more time to scan the field and find open receivers and for opening running lanes for Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon to have big games. Next for the Bengals is the 6-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming off an unimpressive 35-7 beatdown by the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. With most of the talk centered on the match-up of Burrow and Tom Brady, In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, understands the game will be decided in the trenches, especially the play of the Bengals offensive line against an excellent Buccaneers defense.
We've had NFL analyst Chris Simms on In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics several times. Each time we talk with the former quarterback, he gets more excited about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Now, after the Bengals' impressive 27-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, Simms is ecstatic about the Bengals signal caller and has moved him up his board of the top NFL quarterbacks playing today. Simms and Lap talk all about how amazing Burrow was on Sunday, along with how the Bengals are not a one-pony show with a solid roster on both sides of the ball and players like Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to go with an ever-improving offensive line with new additions Alex Cappa, Ted Karras, La'el Collins, and Cordell Volson and a defense led by coordinator Lou Anarumo who is getting the most out of D.J. Reader, Sam Hubbard and the rest of the Bengals outstanding defense to make them the team on the rise as we near the end of the regular season. You won't want to miss out on the latest visit with Chris Simms.
It's the “Best Day Of My Life” edition of the Bengals Booth Podcast as Joe Mixon sets a franchise record with five touchdowns in a 42-21 win over the Carolina Panthers. On this episode you'll hear radio replays, 1-on-1 locker room interviews, and analysis from Dave Lapham. Then, in this week's “Fun Facts” segment, you'll get to know Bengals offensive lineman Alex Cappa.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
