CINCINNATI -- The Bengals addressed their need to sustain production with the extensions of Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Mike Gesicki on offense and BJ Hill on defense. They addressed their holes on the interior of the offensive line and linebacker in the draft. But have they done enough at defensive edge and safety? There are reasons to like their approach to a point but Alex Frank of CLNSCincy.com joins Trags to break down where it could be better. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dive deep into the Cincinnati Bengals' philosophy and strategy heading into the crucial 2025 NFL Draft. As April arrives, so does the anticipation for how the Bengals will build upon their foundation. This video explores the enduring principle established by team founder Paul Brown: Draft, Develop, Retain. This core tenet remains the bedrock of the Bengals' approach to team building, aiming for sustained success rather than quick fixes. We examine recent proof of this philosophy in action, highlighting the extensions and mega-deals for cornerstone players like Joe Burrow (2020 1st pick), Tee Higgins (2020 2nd round pick), and Ja'Marr Chase (2021 1st pick). These moves underscore the commitment to identifying talent in the draft, nurturing its growth within the Bengals' system, and ultimately securing those players for the long term. The discussion extends to the Bengals' recent free agency moves, where 13 out of 17 initial signings were their own players they opted to retain. This further emphasizes their dedication to keeping homegrown talent like Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, Tanner Hudson, Joseph Ossai, and Cam Sample while strategically adding external pieces. This strategy has not only built continuity but also contributed to making Cincinnati an increasingly attractive destination for free agents seeking a successful and stable environment. A significant portion of the video delves into the unique structure of the Bengals' draft evaluation process, another legacy of Paul Brown. Learn how the coaching staff is deeply integrated, acting as extensions of the scouting department. Position coaches meticulously break down film and study tape, project players' fits into the Bengals' specific offensive and defensive schemes, and actively participate in interviews and visits. Discover the potential "secret weapon" the Bengals possess this year with Defensive Coordinator Al Golden. His recent experience coaching at Notre Dame provides invaluable insight into Fighting Irish prospects like Howard Cross, Jack Kiser, Xavier Watts, and Benjamin Morrison. Beyond just Notre Dame players, Golden's recent immersion in the college game means he's prepared defensive game plans against a wide array of top college offenses and prospects nationwide, giving the Bengals an extra layer of evaluation depth. This insight, combined with the college coaching backgrounds of other staff members (OL, DL, LB coaches), creates a robust evaluation team. The video emphasizes why this draft aligns perfectly with the Bengals' pressing needs. Experts widely regard the 2025 draft class as exceptionally deep along the interior offensive and defensive lines – precisely where Cincinnati needs reinforcement to compete effectively, especially within the physical AFC North. We identify and analyze several potential draft targets who could bolster the trenches: Offensive Line: Names like Kelvin Banks (Texas), Will Campbell (LSU), Josh Conerly (Oregon), Marcus Minor (Purdue), Jonah Savaiinaea (Arizona), and Gray Zabel (NDSU) are discussed, with a strong emphasis on the crucial trait of position versatility. The ability of a lineman to play both tackle and guard or multiple interior spots is highly valued in today's NFL. Defensive Line: Explore prospects suited for the interior, like Notre Dame's Howard Cross, Michigan's powerful duo of Mason Graham and the exceptionally athletic Kenneth Grant, Oklahoma's long-armed Derek Harmon, Kentucky's massive Deone Walker, and Ohio State's Tyleik Williams. The need for stout run defenders and interior pass rush is paramount. Edge Rushers: This section briefly touches upon high-upside edge players like Abdul Carter (Penn State), James Pearce Jr. (Tennessee), and Shemar Stewart (Texas A&M), acknowledging the Bengals' potential interest if top talent slides. Ultimately, the Bengals' draft strategy involves identifying the best available athlete who fits their culture and scheme, particularly when top talent unexpectedly falls. While needs on the offensive and defensive lines are clear, the Bengals won't hesitate to add value at other positions. This draft presents a massive opportunity to solidify the lines, protect Joe Burrow, improve the run defense, and maximize their championship window by adhering to their time-tested "Draft, Develop, Retain" philosophy. Get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Cincinnati Bengals' roster-building strategy with Mike Potts, a key Bengals' personnel and scouting department member. In this insightful interview, Mike pulls back the curtain on the chaotic yet crucial off-season processes that shape the future of an NFL franchise. The off-season in the National Football League is a whirlwind of activity, and Mike Potts navigates through it all. His area of focus is college scouting, a vital ingredient in the modern NFL, where roster turnover is constant. No roster is the same from one year to the next, and the draft and college free agency are often the lifeblood of franchises looking to rebuild or maintain their competitive edge. Mike begins by vividly describing the current landscape, describing it as a "crazy time of the year" due to the simultaneous whirlwind of free agency, the NFL Combine, and the looming draft. He emphasizes that maintaining a consistent dialogue between the personnel staff, coaching staff, and ownership is crucial for aligning player evaluations and setting clear team goals. He dives into the Bengals' free agency strategy, highlighting the team's priority of re-signing their own players. He underlines the importance of understanding "scheme fit" and "culture fit," ensuring players align with the Bengals' values and locker room dynamics. While acknowledging the large sums of money thrown around in free agency, he stresses the importance of cap management. The Bengals are known for remaining responsible with their cap, and he discusses how the team balances retaining key players with adding talent from other organizations. The interview transitions into discussing the "secondary market" of free agency and finding opportunities beyond the initial bidding frenzy. Mike acknowledges that some players overshot the market, and being patient for the price to come down can present an opportunity. Samaje Perine is discussed, as is his importance to the Bengals organization. Sam Hubbard's departure from the team after an impressive career is also discussed. The discussion moves to the college draft, a central theme of Mike Potts' expertise. He emphasizes the value of players with positional versatility, as NFL rosters are limited in size, and players who can contribute in multiple roles are particularly valuable. He highlights BJ Hill, Mike Gesicki, and Cody Ford as players who can perform at numerous positions. Potts explains why his team is so important to him and the direction of the team. According to him, the team's job is to scout each player and understand everything from their college careers to more personal details. Transitioning to the upcoming NFL Draft, Potts assesses the overall depth and quality of the available talent. He explains that there may not be any first-ballot hall of farmers, but there is still a good amount of depth at various positions. As the interview wraps up, Potts emphasizes the ongoing nature of roster evaluation and improvement. He notes that the Bengals will continue to monitor the free-agent market, assess draft prospects, and identify players who can contribute to the team's success. In this episode of "In the Trenches with Dave Lapham," former NFL offensive lineman and Bengals analyst Dave Lapham delivers an in-depth breakdown of the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason plans, focusing on free agency, roster construction, and the team's approach to managing the salary cap. Lapham dives into the Bengals' strategy, emphasizing their focus on versatility, responsible spending, and avoiding the pitfalls of dead money. Lapham begins by highlighting the Bengals' key re-signings, including Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, and Cody Ford. He emphasizes these players' versatility, noting that they can play multiple positions and contribute in various ways on the field. Lapham points out that re-signing these players allows the Bengals to maintain continuity and familiarity within their system. The discussion then shifts to the Bengals' approach to free agency, with Lapham analyzing the team's signings and releases. He notes that the Bengals have been active in retaining their own players and adding depth to their roster. He also discusses the challenges of managing the salary cap, particularly when it comes to signing high-profile players like Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson, in addition to Joe Burrow's existing contract. Lapham delves into the intricacies of contract structures, explaining how the Bengals prioritize upfront payment to players and structuring contracts to avoid dead money. He contrasts this approach with that of other teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, which have struggled with salary cap issues due to large contracts with significant dead money implications. The episode also explores the Bengals' needs on both sides of the ball. Lapham discusses the importance of strengthening the defensive line and finding a replacement for Alex Cappa at the guard position. He mentions several potential free agent targets and discusses the team's options for filling these needs. Lapham emphasizes that the Bengals are committed to building a competitive team while being fiscally responsible. He highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy salary cap and avoiding the boom-and-bust cycles that can plague teams that overspend or mismanage their finances. The discussion concludes with Lapham discussing the importance of team chemistry and the desire of players like Mike Gesicki to play alongside Joe Burrow and the Bengals' talented receiving corps. He notes that the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl and be part of a winning culture can be a significant factor in players' decisions, even if it means taking a slightly smaller contract. This episode provides valuable insights into the Bengals' off-season strategy and approach to building a sustainable, competitive team. Dave Lapham's expertise and analysis offer fans a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Bengals as they navigate the complexities of NFL free agency and roster construction. In The Trenches with Dave Lapham is presented by First Star Logistics.

Former Cincinnati Bengal and NBC broadcaster Cris Collinsworth joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengals win over the New York Giants and how the Bengals can still turn their 2024 season around. Cris of course called the game on Sunday night and it was a surprising outcome. It was a low-scoring, defensive game which is the exact opposite of the Bengal's past four games. It was a frustrating game for Joe Burrow and the offense but Burrow played well enough in the big moments to pull out the win. The highlight of the game was the defense, playing their best game of the 2024 season. BJ Hill and Trey Hendrickson were huge standouts, giving the Giants problems all game. The secondary also played great coming up with huge plays, especially on two crucial 4th downs. The Bengals have another must-win game this Sunday as they travel to Cleveland to face a division rival. Joe Burrow has struggled against the Browns in his career but the Browns have had a horrible start to their season. Cincinnati Bengals DT BJ Hill joins Solomon Wilcots to discuss the recent success for the team
Cincinnati Bengals defense coordinator Lou Anarumo joins us today on In the Trenches with Dave Lapham to discuss the Bengals' impressive Week 6 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The Bengal's defense had their most impressive performance of the season so far giving up only 14 points, recording four sacks, and forcing two turnovers. Cam Taylor Britt made one of the biggest plays of the game for the second straight week with an interception of Geno Smith in the third quarter. Trey Hendrickson and Sam Hubbard closed the game out with two huge red zone stops in the fourth quarter and Lou rewarded the whole starting defensive line; Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, DJ Reader, and BJ Hill with the "game brick" for the win something the defense does after every win. With the offense struggling in the second half Lou's defense needed a stellar performance for the Bengals to pull out the win and that's exactly what they did. The Cincinnati Bengals defense, led by clutch plays and red zone stands, led the Bengals to a win heading into their bye week, a chance for the team to get healthy and find answers on offense. Joe Burrow and the offense started the game on fire with two straight touchdown drives before derailing entirely and floundering the rest of the way. Luckily, Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, BJ Hill, DJ Reader, Cam Taylor-Britt, Cam Sample, Dax Hill, and the rest of the defense stepped up big time to clutch out the W.Join the Locked On Bengals Subtext Community! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonbengalsFind and follow Locked On Bengals on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-bengals-daily-podcast-on-the-cincinnati-bengals/id1159723162Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AObc0lh0WmQl5fJVgtajsGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vbG9ja2Vkb25iZW5nYWxz?sa=X&ved=0CAYQrrcFahcKEwio_sXtj8nuAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAgStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-bengalsJames Rapien and Jake Liscow take you inside the Bengals with the latest news, unique analysis, and insight on your favorite team, every day on Locked On Bengals. Luckily, Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, BJ Hill, DJ Reader, Cam Taylor-Britt, Cam Sample, Dax Hill, and the rest of the defense stepped up big time to clutch out the W. We had the pleasure of interviewing Johnny Day over Zoom video.Johnny Day, a former oilfield worker turned full-time entertainer, recently released his new single, "Every Beer Every Bar" feat. Zack Dyer! Written by Dyer (Tim McGraw), Morgan Evans ("Kiss Somebody") and Lindsay Rimes (Kane Brown), "Every Beer Every Bar" raises a toast to getting over a relationship. Johnny Day is an American talent whose skillful singing, songwriting, and guitaring has catapulted him into a promising country music career. Born in Kersey, Colo., Day became intrigued by and studied the works of Brad Paisley. In high school, he taught himself how to play guitar like Paisley and even started working in the oilfield as a means of purchasing his own 64' vintage tele and Paisley's custom Dr. Z Wreck amp. Day's artistry was also inspired by the like of Keith Urban, Brent Mason and Shania Twain, all of whom influenced him to pursue music as a career. This pursuit would ultimately lead him to pack his bags and relocate his family to the mecca of country music, Nashville, Tenn., all while continuing to travel back to Colorado to work in the oilfield. His commitment to his family and to his career is made evident in the lyrics and chords of his music. Day is a seasoned entertainer who has performed at numerous premier venues and events across the country including Bluebird Café, Key West Songwriters Festival, and the Rocky Mountain Country music Awards where he was nominated for New Country Artist and Performer of the Year. On today's episode, we recap a red-hot start to the free agency period for the Cincinnati Bengals. First, we discuss the news that hit our desks right before recording, that CJ Uzomah would depart for the New York Jets, plus who could replace him in 2022. Then, we dive into the great news that Alex Cappa (4 years, $40 million) and Ted Karras (3 years, $18 million) will join the Bengals interior offensive line in 2022. We discuss the excitement around the move, plus the willingness by the Bengals to spend on the guard position. After discussing that line, we evaluate the new deal for BJ Hill (3 years, $30 million) and the departure of Larry Ogunjobi. Finally, we make our predictions for the Bengals next move and look at who else made some noise in the AFC North.
Jake and I discuss what a great day this has been as we retool and upgrade the Offensive Line by adding Cappa and Karras on Day 1 of the legal tampering period as well as resigning BJ Hill for the D Line!! #WhoDey #Bengals #RuleTheJungle #RuleTheNorth #RuleItAll #NFLFreeAgency #SeizeTheDey #NewDey

The NFL coaching carousel for head coaches stopped spinning, but the cycle continues for position coaches. Analyst Nick Jacobs and host Tod Palmer go through the Kansas City Chiefs' coaching changes and also dissect the free-agent class of defensive ends and tackles with an offseason overhaul of the pass rush expected. On today's episode, we discuss what still feels kind of impossible: the Cincinnati Bengals won in Arrowhead Stadium and are going to Super Bowl LVI. We break down the epic comeback win over the Kansas City Chiefs, starting with Eli Apple's incredible tackle of Tyreek Hill to keep the game manageable at the half. Then, we talk about the players who stepped up down the stretch, including BJ Hill, Jessie Bates III, Sam Hubbard, and Trey Hendrickson on defense, plus Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Joe Mixon on offense. Later, we scoff at the "Chiefs blew it" narrative and set our sights on the Rams in Super Bowl 56.

It's the “Black and Yellow” edition of the #Bengals Booth Podcast as the Bengals look for a road win against the dreaded, hated, but always respected Pittsburgh Steelers. Guests include Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated on Joe Burrow's comeback and the Bengals' prospects for success in 2021. My 1-on-1 player conversation this week is actually 1-on-2 as I talk to former NC State roommates Germaine Pratt and BJ Hill about being reunited in Cincinnati. Dave Lapham joins me to discuss the latest Bengals news and share some keys to beating Pittsburgh. And finally, it's our Know the Foe segment as we discuss the Steelers with a guy who has covered the team for more than 30 years – Ed Bouchette.
On this week's Victory Monday episode, the guys recap a thrilling, overtime victory to start the Cincinnati Bengals 2021 season, 27-24 over the Minnesota Vikings. They open with discussion about two impressive returns-to-the-field for Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon, who helped out out a statement start from the offense. Then, they talk about a reckoning delivered from Larry Ogunjobi, BJ Hill, Larry Ogunjobi, and the rest of the Bengals defensive line. Of course, they spent time talking about some rodeo play-calling from Zac Taylor that almost cost the team the game. Plus, their thoughts on a 101 yard, 5 catch, 1 touchdown and NO DROP debut Ja'Marr Chase… and MORE!

Adam and Andy are back talking all things New York Football Giants! This was not the dress rehearsal Giants fans hoped for. The guys discuss the surprising start of Nate Solder at right tackle and what that means, if anything, for Matt Pearts future. Andrew Thomas all struggled bringing Adam dangerously close to the edge on Dave Gettleman's roster construction. Daniel Jones gave Giants fans exactly what we wanted: high completion percentage, mobility outside the pocket and down field accuracy on a 23 yard touchdown to Kaden Smith. He also through an interception on the goal line, just to keep us on our toes. Beyond the concerns, BJ Hill did not play in the finale making Andy wonder what that could indicate for the 53 man roster. David Sills and CJ Board have earned their roster spots, but what will become of Pettis and Ross? And could Adam have been right all along that Gary Brightwell can make the opening day roster? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/onegiantpodcast/message
