Get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Cincinnati Bengals' roster-building strategy with Mike Potts, a key Bengals' personnel and scouting department member. In this insightful interview, Mike pulls back the curtain on the chaotic yet crucial off-season processes that shape the future of an NFL franchise. The off-season in the National Football League is a whirlwind of activity, and Mike Potts navigates through it all. His area of focus is college scouting, a vital ingredient in the modern NFL, where roster turnover is constant. No roster is the same from one year to the next, and the draft and college free agency are often the lifeblood of franchises looking to rebuild or maintain their competitive edge. Mike begins by vividly describing the current landscape, describing it as a "crazy time of the year" due to the simultaneous whirlwind of free agency, the NFL Combine, and the looming draft. He emphasizes that maintaining a consistent dialogue between the personnel staff, coaching staff, and ownership is crucial for aligning player evaluations and setting clear team goals. He dives into the Bengals' free agency strategy, highlighting the team's priority of re-signing their own players. He underlines the importance of understanding "scheme fit" and "culture fit," ensuring players align with the Bengals' values and locker room dynamics. While acknowledging the large sums of money thrown around in free agency, he stresses the importance of cap management. The Bengals are known for remaining responsible with their cap, and he discusses how the team balances retaining key players with adding talent from other organizations. The interview transitions into discussing the "secondary market" of free agency and finding opportunities beyond the initial bidding frenzy. Mike acknowledges that some players overshot the market, and being patient for the price to come down can present an opportunity. Samaje Perine is discussed, as is his importance to the Bengals organization. Sam Hubbard's departure from the team after an impressive career is also discussed. The discussion moves to the college draft, a central theme of Mike Potts' expertise. He emphasizes the value of players with positional versatility, as NFL rosters are limited in size, and players who can contribute in multiple roles are particularly valuable. He highlights BJ Hill, Mike Gesicki, and Cody Ford as players who can perform at numerous positions. Potts explains why his team is so important to him and the direction of the team. According to him, the team's job is to scout each player and understand everything from their college careers to more personal details. Transitioning to the upcoming NFL Draft, Potts assesses the overall depth and quality of the available talent. He explains that there may not be any first-ballot hall of farmers, but there is still a good amount of depth at various positions. As the interview wraps up, Potts emphasizes the ongoing nature of roster evaluation and improvement. He notes that the Bengals will continue to monitor the free-agent market, assess draft prospects, and identify players who can contribute to the team's success. It's another edition of The Podbag on today's Talking Buffalo and Patrick Moran is responding to a bunch of outstanding questions and comments from listeners, including elaborating on why Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has done a much better job at drafting since 2018 than a lot of critics give credit for.As with any general manager in sports, it's low hanging fruit to point out every draft miss that GM has made. Beane's certainly had some noticeable misses in the early rounds, including Kaiir Elam, Boogie Basham and Cody Ford to name a few, not to mention some rookies from last year who appear to have a long way to go. That said Patrick not only goes over several of Beane's best hits but goes deeper, revealing who the next prospect picked by another team in the draft was at the same position. It's insane to think what kind of shape the Bills would be in if Beane took the same positional player after guys likes Terrel Bernard, Khalil Shakir, Christian Benford, Spencer Brown and others. Also, there's pertinent questions submitted regarding the importance of James Cook and also how critical is for Keon Coleman to take a huge step in year two—or is it actually?Plus, reaction to Stefon Diggs going to New England, a move Patrick would love to see the Bills make before Week one and the high profile Stevie Johnson vs Darrelle Revis Twitter feud brewing. That plus a few hockey topics, Patrick discusses his favorite new TV show and much more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. As of March 12, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals are entering the free agency period with a focus on bolstering their roster following a 2024 season that left them eager to improve both offensively and defensively. With the new NFL league year officially starting today at 4 p.m. ET, the Bengals have already made strategic moves in prior years and are poised to target key free agents to address lingering needs. The team currently has approximately $46 million in salary cap space, providing flexibility to pursue impactful additions while managing extensions for stars like Ja'Marr Chase and decisions regarding Tee Higgins, who has been franchise-tagged for the second consecutive year at $26.2 million. Looking back at last year's free agency as a reference point, the Bengals added players like safety Geno Stone from Baltimore, running back Zack Moss from Indianapolis, tight end Mike Gesicki from New England, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins from Houston, and safety Vonn Bell from Carolina. They also retained key depth pieces such as tight end Drew Sample, offensive lineman Cody Ford, and linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither. These moves showcased a balanced approach, enhancing the offense around Joe Burrow while reinforcing a defense under new coordinator Al Golden. For 2025, the Bengals appear to be continuing this strategy, with an emphasis on fortifying the defensive line and secondary, areas that struggled in 2024. Posts on X and web sources suggest the Bengals have interest in several free agents this offseason. On the offensive line, names like Will Hernandez, Pat Mekari, Teven Jenkins, and Mekhi Becton have surfaced as potential targets to protect Burrow and improve the run game. Defensively, edge rushers such as Azeez Ojulari, Dre'Mont Jones, and Levi Onwuzurike are on the radar to complement or replace Trey Hendrickson, who has requested a trade. Veteran Calais Campbell could provide leadership and depth. With 23 pending free agents, including stars like Higgins, B.J. Hill, and Mike Hilton, the Bengals must balance re-signings with external additions. Their draft position (17th overall) and six picks offer further flexibility, but free agency will be critical in setting the tone for 2025. Expect Cincinnati to target versatile, high-impact players to elevate their contention window.
In this episode of "In the Trenches with Dave Lapham," former NFL offensive lineman and Bengals analyst Dave Lapham delivers an in-depth breakdown of the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason plans, focusing on free agency, roster construction, and the team's approach to managing the salary cap. Lapham dives into the Bengals' strategy, emphasizing their focus on versatility, responsible spending, and avoiding the pitfalls of dead money. Lapham begins by highlighting the Bengals' key re-signings, including Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill, and Cody Ford. He emphasizes these players' versatility, noting that they can play multiple positions and contribute in various ways on the field. Lapham points out that re-signing these players allows the Bengals to maintain continuity and familiarity within their system. The discussion then shifts to the Bengals' approach to free agency, with Lapham analyzing the team's signings and releases. He notes that the Bengals have been active in retaining their own players and adding depth to their roster. He also discusses the challenges of managing the salary cap, particularly when it comes to signing high-profile players like Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson, in addition to Joe Burrow's existing contract. Lapham delves into the intricacies of contract structures, explaining how the Bengals prioritize upfront payment to players and structuring contracts to avoid dead money. He contrasts this approach with that of other teams, such as the Cleveland Browns, which have struggled with salary cap issues due to large contracts with significant dead money implications. The episode also explores the Bengals' needs on both sides of the ball. Lapham discusses the importance of strengthening the defensive line and finding a replacement for Alex Cappa at the guard position. He mentions several potential free agent targets and discusses the team's options for filling these needs. Lapham emphasizes that the Bengals are committed to building a competitive team while being fiscally responsible. He highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy salary cap and avoiding the boom-and-bust cycles that can plague teams that overspend or mismanage their finances. The discussion concludes with Lapham discussing the importance of team chemistry and the desire of players like Mike Gesicki to play alongside Joe Burrow and the Bengals' talented receiving corps. He notes that the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl and be part of a winning culture can be a significant factor in players' decisions, even if it means taking a slightly smaller contract. This episode provides valuable insights into the Bengals' off-season strategy and approach to building a sustainable, competitive team. Dave Lapham's expertise and analysis offer fans a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the Bengals as they navigate the complexities of NFL free agency and roster construction. Watch Off the Bench Presented by UDF with Chatterbox Sports Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. LIVE on the Chatterbox Sports YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE to the channel to ensure you never miss a thing. As of March 10, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals have kicked off the NFL free agency period with a strategic focus on retaining key contributors and bolstering their roster for the upcoming season. With the new league year set to begin on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET, the Bengals are navigating a pivotal offseason, balancing the retention of core players with the need to address defensive and offensive line weaknesses. Here's a look at their moves so far and the context surrounding them. One of the Bengals' earliest confirmed moves was re-signing tight end Mike Gesicki to a three-year contract extension, announced on March 10. Gesicki, who had a standout 2024 season with the most receptions by a Bengals tight end in 43 years, provides quarterback Joe Burrow with a reliable target. This move underscores Cincinnati's intent to maintain offensive continuity, especially with wide receiver Tee Higgins on the franchise tag ($26.17 million for 2025) and Ja'Marr Chase poised for a massive extension that could make him the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback. The Gesicki signing ensures depth at a position that lacked stability last season. On the offensive line, the Bengals extended guard/tackle Cody Ford with a two-year deal on March 10. Ford, who signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract in 2024, offers versatility and depth. With the release of veteran guard Alex Cappa on March 3, freeing up cap space, Cincinnati is clearly prioritizing flexibility along the line. The team's projected $53.1 million in cap space (ninth-most in the NFL) gives them room to pursue additional linemen, potentially targeting free agents like Kevin Zeitler or Morgan Moses to protect Burrow. Defensively, the Bengals made a splash by signing former Packers defensive tackle T.J. Slaton to a two-year, $15.1 million deal. Slaton, known for his run-stopping prowess (third in run stop win rate in 2024 per NFL Next Gen Stats), addresses a glaring need after Cincinnati ranked fourth-worst in expected points added against the run last season. With defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins released on February 21 and Trey Hendrickson seeking a trade, Slaton's addition is a step toward rebuilding the interior line. The Bengals also re-signed defensive tackle B.J. Hill to a three-year, $33 million deal, signaling a commitment to continuity despite his age (30 in April). With $40-53 million in cap space, the Bengals are poised for more moves. Potential targets include edge rushers or linebackers to replace Hendrickson or Germaine Pratt (who requested a trade), ensuring a defense that faltered in 2024 doesn't sink their playoff hopes again. Free agency is just beginning, and Cincinnati's proactive start suggests a busy offseason ahead.
CINCINNATI -- One of the most crucial offseason weeks begins for the Bengals, with fans hoping the team can finalize contract extensions of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins while the Trey Hendrickson trade situation continues to evolve. How do the signings of their own free agents like Mike Gesicki, BJ Hill and Cody Ford impact the team's roster-building this offseason? Paul Dehner Jr. of the Athletic joins Trags to discuss. NFL Draft talk is heating up as the annual selection process is only a couple of weeks away. The Buffalo Bills go into the draft with six picks, including the number 27 overall. But will the team select players who will have an impact this season? After hitting a home run with the selection of quarterback Josh Allen, fan have been begun to look at the players selected by GM Brandon Bean with a critical eye. With questionable selections like defensive ends A.J. Epinesa and Boogie Basham who have struggled to get playing time, and trades that have cost extra draft picks, like the one for Cody Ford, there's clearly some room for improvement. Hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton discuss the strategies they believe the Bills should take into account in order to make the 2023 NFL Draft a success. For example, they answer questions about positional value, trading back, and addressing positions of need, such as middle linebacker. For Cincinnati Bengals fans, the early stages of NFL free agency had many scratching their heads and wondering what the Bengals were thinking as multiple players on both sides of the ball left for other teams. However, soon afterward, Duke Tobin and the Bengals' front office went to work, making a significant splash in signing left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to add more protection for quarterback Joe Burrow. More recently, the Bengals added another offensive lineman, Cody Ford, to go with safety Nick Scott, cornerback Sidney Jones IV, and tight end Irv Smith Jr., leaving Bengals fans excited about the team's direction as we count down the days to the 2023 NFL Draft. Dave Lapham was in the First Star Logistics studio and looks at the newest members of the Cincinnati Bengals signed during free agency.
A deep-dive into the Bengals plunge into free agency - Orlando Brown Jr, Nick Scott, Cody Ford, the re-signings, the players that left, free agents from other teams that got away, the list of our own unsigned free agents, a wish list of players still out there, what our divisional rivals have done, and much, much more.I also give my true opinions on the Jonah Williams trade request, and the unfounded social media criticism of Mr. Tobin. The scintillating Monika emcee's, and Evan McPherson lends his support to the show.Through it all, I promise you that no one breaks down Bengals free agency quite like The Unofficial Bengals Podcast!!
