Welcome to another riveting episode of Hearts of Oak, where we delve deep into the stories that shape our world. Today, we're honored to host a distinguished guest, a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist with a background in maternal fetal medicine, whose journey through the medical field has been nothing short of extraordinary. In this episode, our guest shares insights from a career marked by a relentless pursuit of truth, especially in light of the tumultuous events surrounding public health strategies during recent global crises. We'll explore how personal experiences, influenced by historical figures like Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, have shaped his approach to medicine, emphasizing the importance of standing firm against mainstream narratives when patient safety is at stake. Our discussion will take a critical look at how health policies, driven by a complex web of government, pharmaceutical, and medical organizations, have impacted the most vulnerable among us. We'll tackle the uncomfortable truths about medical ethics, the silence of influential societal groups, and the personal sacrifices made by those who speak out against the status quo. This episode promises to be a beacon of awareness, urging us all to question, to learn, and to remember the importance of integrity in the face of systemic challenges. So, join us as we navigate through the ethical dilemmas of our time, inspired by a physician's commitment to never compromise patient care for profit or popularity. Artist and podcaster Carly Monardo returns to us for the third time and this time we've got a doozy. We're talking about Bloc Party's debut album Silent Alarm (2005). We talked a lot about being twenty. It's very much about being twenty and working in Urban Outfitters, and discovering things for yourself. We also took a slight detour to deliver a pep talk about following your dreams and making that thing. This is a good one, you'll like it. Carly is @whirringblender. She stars in Rude Tales Of Magic and Oh These, Those Stars Of Space which are both extremely worth your time. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Her newsletter is at griffnotes.ghost.io Thank you to Dee McDonnell for our artwork. We have a Patreon! You can get bonus episodes including our fortnightly show Started/Finished where we talk about the pop culture we've started and finished recently. We also have some free lil bits of merch. Kele Okereke had been working on his band for quite some time before landing on a dedicated 4 piece line-up. After a year and a half of road testing their songs at clubs and pubs across London, it was a chance meeting at a Franz Ferdinand gig that Kele was able to hand over a demo CD of his band's material to a couple of the Franz members, as well as influential British radio DJ Steve Lamacq. From there, radio play and single releases commenced. Finally "Bloc Party" launched onto the scene in 2005 with their debut album "Silent Alarm", a blistering, energy filled piece of genius. Since then they have not stopped touring and releasing new music, albeit with a number of line-up changes, and a brief hiatus.Join Jay and Jesse as they discuss the history and creatives approaches of London's "Bloc Party"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
Dairy owners wanting a subsidised smoke cannon to ward off would be robbers now have another option on the table. Entrepreneur Sir Ray Avery is offering dairy owners in the Auckland suburb of Sandringham, a free trial of a so-called wearable silent alarm. Shopkeepers under threat can hit the alarm on the watch, and it calls directly through to police despatch. Sir Ray Avery talks to Lisa Owen.
One of the biggest British post-punk revival bands Bloc Party returned this year with Alpha Games, their sixth album. Frontman, Kele Okereke discusses how new band members, drummer Louise Bartle and bassist Justin Harris (replacing Matt Tong and Gordon Moakes who left in 2013 and 2015 respectively) finally had the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a Bloc Party album. Much to the delight of fans, the album's sonics harks back to their critically-acclaimed debut, Silent Alarm. Usually, one to eschew nostalgia and weary of looking to the past for inspiration, Kele and longtime guitarist, Russell Lissack, gave in to a tour, belatedly celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut. Find out why? And how this affected the writing of the new album. Many thanks for making this possible — Kele, for an illuminating chat. And apologies for keeping your husband up late. To Colin Roberts at Big Life Management. Thank you to BMG US for permission to use Master Recordings and Sony Music for Publishing. Also to Jen Appel and Juliette Kost at The Oriel Co for constant support.Songs Featured: "Rough Justice," "Helicopter," "Day Four," "The Love Within," "If We Get Caught," "Traps," "Callum Is A Snake," "The Peace Offering" and "Of Things Yet To Come."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com Or leave a voice message here. It's time for WASTOIDS With…Laura Jane Grace. She's created some of the most strident punk music of the last couple of decades, both as a solo artist and leader of Against Me! She's currently embarked on the Carousel Tour, playing collaborative sets with Anthony Green of Circa Survive and Tim Kasher of Cursive, along with special guests Mikey Erg, Home Is Where, and Oceanator on select dates. Here in AZ, we're psyched to catch the show at the Crescent Ballroom on May 20.Laura kept real busy during the pandemic, and was a frequent DJ on Vans Channel 66, where she exclusively played music released post-2020. She also put out a killer EP, At War With The Silverfish, and was recently elected as a governor of the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy—that's the GRAMMYs. Laura sat down with Brandon Michel to chat about the challenges of touring in 2022, the 15th anniversary of Against Me!'s landmark album New Wave, what she's been listening to, and get into her habits, which include running, drinking absurd amounts of coffee, and dominating foosball tables nationwide. Revisiting the "technicolour" classic, Bloc Party's debut album Silent Alarm. Picking up where their early EPs left off, Silent Alarm reinvigorated modern guitar rock, with its post-punk energy wrapped in electronic pop sensibilities. Despite the relative simplicity of the music, Bloc Party's dedication to carefully crafted rhythm and intelligent lyricism on politics, intimacy and more, is what establishes the group's legacy alongside heavyweights The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand. All these years later, Silent Alarm sounds as fresh as ever. TRACKS PLAYED: 'Like Eating Glass' 'Helicopter' 'Positive Tension' 'Banquet' 'Blue Light' 'She's Hearing Voices' 'This Modern Love' 'Pioneers' 'Price Of Gasoline' 'So Here We Are' 'Luno' 'Plans' 'Compliments'. Bloc Party are one of Britain's most enduring but curious indie rock successes.
The Holy Spirit presents Himself in our life in many ways. He will constantly prompt our conscience to remind us of the dangers of our sins and our rebellion. Everyday it is our choice if we heed to His warnings of protection and buckle up, or if we want to ride life with no protection until we have a head-on collision with the destruction of our sins. With enough rejection of His protection, the alarm that seemed so audible at one stage of our life, will one day become a silent alarm.
Dipl. This week, I see the future of music videos in Usher and Nas' new anti-police brutality protest anthem, which uses your computer's webcam to force you to not look away from the victims of such injustices. We also discover that Billie Joe Armstrong of 90's pop-punk rabble-rousers Green Day has a teenage son (!) whose real name is Jakob Danger (!!) and the kid can write some pretty decent tunes (!!!). Lastly, I profess my undying love for Bloc Party's 2005 debut album Silent Alarm (and try to keep it as objective as possible).
