Si si 4 Fraen aus verschiddenen Ecker vun der Welt, déi sech zu London zesummefonnt hu fir ganz eklekteschen a psychedelesche Rock ze maachen. Rieds geet vu Los Bitchos, déi dëse Weekend um Out of The Crowd spillen. D'Claire Barthelemy huet mat der Lead-Gittaristin geschwat.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two women from different parts of the planet who share a common heritage and creative outlook: Serra Petale and Gaye Su Akyol. Petale is the guitarist for the multinational band Los Bitchos, which has been creating tough-to-pigeonhole instrumental music for the past seven years. The band's membership and sound are both truly worldly: Petale is from Western Australia, and her bandmates are from Uruguay, Sweden, and the UK. As you'll hear, they came together in London after Petale chased her musical dreams there, and they've made some incredibly fun music since, mixing sounds from Argentina, Turkey, and a sort of psychedelic surf-rock. Their first album, produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, came with the incredible title Let The Festivities Begin!, and they just followed it with another album, the fully delightful Talkie Talkie. Check out that album's “La Bomba” right here. The other half of today's conversation joins us from her home base in Turkey. Gaye Su Akyol has been making music—not to mention painting—for the past decade, gaining a worldwide following for records that take the flavors of her country and expand them in a dozen directions. She's been politically and artistically outspoken throughout her time in the spotlight, and you can tell that won't be changing anytime soon. The title of her latest album translates to Anatolian Dragon, and here's a song whose title I won't butcher, but that translates roughly to, “I want to, but there's no hurry.” Even if you don't understand the words, it's easy to catch its groove. I mentioned that these two share a background: Gaye grew up in Turkey, as did Serra's grandparents—as it turns out pretty close to each other. So they chat a bit about that, and occasionally drop in some Turkish words as well. They chat about how women need to go the extra mile to get their art into the world, and about manifesting your dreams rather than waiting around. If that sounds a little rah-rah, Gaye actually says, jokingly, that they sound like a Nike commercial at one point. I found it fun and inspiring, and I hope you do too. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Serra Petale and Gaye Su Akyol for chatting. My guest this week is 5 time MPG mastering engineer of the year Katie Tavini, who's work includes Rudimental, Bloc Party, Ash, We Are Scientists, Nadine Shah, Arlo Parks, Los Bitchos and many more. Since starting in 2014, Katie has grown to become one of the mostin-demand mastering engineers in the UK, who's at home with everything from the heaviest metal to the lushest orchestral works and everything in between. Katie is also a founding member of Weird Jungle, a collective of independent mastering engineers in the UK dedicated to helping bands, artists and labels release the best possible version of their work. During our interview Katie talked about becoming a mastering engineer, how mastering has changed in the last few years, things that mixers sometimes overlook, starting Weird Jungle, and so much more. I spoke with Katie via zoom from her studio in Liverpool. On the intro we look at how mainstream success isn't as big as it used to be, and in honor of Fathers Day, ultimate Dad Rock bands.

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1968 was a ground breaking year for horror movies, well, as far as the big hitter films are concerned anyways. The highs are really high & the lows are few & far between. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1968? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 4 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. PopaHALLics #114 "Avoid These Shows!"You want some turkey? We take out the knives to carve up "Obliterated," "The Buccaneers," and "Monarch: A Legacy of Monsters." But we also make two recommendations for holiday viewing—including one not traditionally thought of as a "Christmas" movie.Streaming:"Obliterated," Netflix. An elite special forces team drunk and stoned from partying must find a nuclear bomb before Las Vegas is, well, obliterated. Steve says this violent, sexual dramedy is a comedy dud."The Buccaneers," Apple+. A group of American girls go to England in search of rich husbands in this period drama with modern touches—think a cross between "Bridgerton" and "The Gilded Age." Kate kept falling asleep."Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," Apple+. This action drama comes alive when Godzilla and other monsters are onscreen. Unfortunately, most of it's about the humans. Kurt Russell and son Wyatt play the same character at different ages."Falling for Christmas," Netflix. In this holiday rom-com, pampered heiress Lindsay Lohan gets amnesia and is taken in by handsome widower with super-cute young daughter. Stop us if you can see where this is going."Moonstruck," streaming and rental. Cher won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a widowed woman who falls in love with her fiance's estranged, hot-tempered younger brother (Nicolas Cage) in this 1987 romantic comedy drama."For All Mankind," Apple +. This speculative sci-fi series depicts an escalating space race after the Russians put a man on the moon first. Books:"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," by Barbara Robinson. This bestselliing holiday classic follows the shenanigans of "the worst kids in the history of the world" when they get involved with a church Christmas pageant. "In the Lives of Puppets," by T.J. Klune. Set in the future after robots have taken over, this novel is a charming PInocchio-inspired fable about what makes us human and the families we choose.Music:PopaHALLics #114 Playlist features our favorite songs from our PopaHALLics playlists this year, from Los Bitchos to Beyonce, from Leonard Cohen to Talking Heads. Kate also discusses a very weird dating prompt.Streaming:"RRR," Netflix. This alternative history finds two real-life Indian revolutionaries becoming best friends and taking on the English colonial government in the 1920s. The hyper-reality (reality-enhanced?) action and dance sequences will blow your mind."The Last of Us," HBO Max. The video game that sold 20 million copies becomes a promising post-apocalyptic TV series. Joel (Pedro Pascal) develops a surrogate father/daughter relationship with teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey)—maybe the secret to mankind's survival—on a dangerous cross-country journey beset by human killers and zombies. "Emily in Paris," Netflix. Kate re-examines her feelings on the light, frothy series about the Chicago marketing executive (Lily Collins) who struggles with her job in fashion and romance in France. Was she too harsh?"Confess, Fletch," Showtime and rental. Chevy Chase played the reporter/sleuth with a penchant for goofy disguises in two 1980s movies. Now Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") takes on the role with considerable charm but a less jokey, more low-key approach in a lighthearted mystery about a murder, an art theft, and a kidnapping.Books:"Hell Bent," by Leigh Bardugo. In this worthy sequel to "Ninth House," Yale's Alex Stern, who can see ghosts, is determined to steal a soul out of Hell. But she's dealing with forces beyond her control. Kate loves it."The Last Flight," by Julie Clark. In this can't-put-it-down thriller, two women desperate to escape their troubled lives exchange identities at the airport. Things quickly go south."The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West," by David McCullough. The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian rediscovers the story of the settlement of the immense Northwest Territory (the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin). Steve's entranced because it details the taming of the "howling wilderness" not far from where he grew up.Music:Let's vibe! Kate's enjoying the music of Los Bitchos, "four gals from the underground realms of London, tripping out on Tequila and Cumbia" (their website), and possibly defunct Six Parts Seven.

Abraxas is a psych/rock/tropicalia duo of Uruguayan-born/UK-based Carolina Faruolo (ex-Los Bitchos) and Danny Lee Blackwell (Night Beats). They're releasing their debut LP Monte Carlo on October 28 on Seattle-based label Suicide Squeeze. In this episode Joe catches up with Danny on the road in France with his band Night Beats and Carolina at her home in Manchester. Danny and Carolina share the process of making the Monte Carlo, and how ease and telepathy translated directly to the final recording. They also discuss how the diverse mixture of influences, the name Abraxas and record title Monte Carlo melded over long distances to make a humid, lush and dreamy listening experience. We hear how the video functioned as their first gig and we hear a couple brand new tunes. https://abraxasintl.bandcamp.com/album/monte-carlohttps://suicidesqueeze.net/2022/09/abraxas-release-new-single-video-manana/https://suicidesqueeze.net/https://lnk.to/AMC Tour Stories is sponsored by Izotope. It's a new music explosion! This week we highlight recent releases from Ozomatli, Omar Apollo, Los Bitchos, Fito Paez, Pahua, Los Autenticos Decadentes, Wiplash and more.
Let's be honest, we're all keenly aware that the world is a dumpster fire. Arguably, we're overly aware of that, which is why when a band like Los Bitchos comes around; there's an intense need for celebration. They're an all-girl band based in London that has one goal: to make you have a great time. That attitude is expressed strikingly so across their debut album, Let The Festivities Begin! (which is out now). To further hit this point home, the band has been on a non-stop run of shows throughout the world, both to headline shows and support acts like Belle and Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand. I caught up with guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Agustina Ruiz after their recent US tour to discuss how the band came to be and her favourite experiences from recording one of the best albums of 2022. Los Bitchos are currently wrapping up a European tour and will be touring the UK starting on September 20th in Bedford. They'll also be supporting Franz Ferdinand again throughout October, with a massive show at London's Ally Pally on October 20th. Be sure to visit their website here for more tour dates.
The last two years have given us plenty of reasons to seek a jaunty, joyous listening experience in our music. And one of the best finds around is https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/los-bitchos (Los Bitchos)—the all-female, internationally assembled outfit consisting of Australia-born Serra Petale (guitar), Sweden's Josefine Jonsson (bass), Uruguay's Agustina Ruiz (keytar), and South Londoner Nic Crawshaw (drums). Los Bitchos' bubbly instrumental psychedelia cocktail mixes their collective musical ingredients (Argentinian cumbia, Peruvian chicha, Turkish Anatolian rhythms, and classic American surf rock), creating a devilishly delicious concoction that's refreshing as a mojito, hits like a negroni, and is as tropical as a mai tai. The good-time gals socked the world with their 2022 debut, Let the Festivities Begin!, showcasing their superpower of rump-shaking revelry. Before Los Bitchos' Nashville opening slot in support of Belle and Sebastian, PG was invited to the historic Ryman Auditorium for a quick and loose gear chat. We covered their streamlined setups that include a favored, fast Italian ride (not a Ducati) that made the trip from the U.K., learned why Petale is “Miss Chorus” and loves the effect's “sad sounds,” and was schooled on why Jonsson just needs a J bass and an Ampeg amp to make the room twist and shout. https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings).
