Since then, he's shown amazing versatility in dozens of great movies including “Hurly Burly”, “The Usual Suspects”, “Diabolique”, “Mulholland Falls”, “The Perez Family”, “One Eyed King”, “Poolhall Junkies”, “Running Scared”, “Once More With Feeling”, and of course, “Bullets Over Broadway” for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Chicago Film Critics Association Award and an American Comedy Award for Best Supporting Actor – and he WON the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. On television, he's appeared on many shows and TV movies including “Glory Years”, “Peter Gunn”, “Excellent Cadavers”, “Boss of Bosses”, and “Unorganized Crime”, which he also co-wrote, and which won 11 major film festival awards. This week we are looking at musical episodes of tv from the 2000s. All three of these episodes have been listed as some of the best musical episodes in television history. All of them speak to themes of unspoken feelings. The adage, "When you can't say it, sing it!" applies here.We are looking at the Scrubs episode Season 6 Episode 6 "My Musical." In this episode, the doctors of Scrubs are treating a patient who perceives everyone to be singing. She has an aneurism that must be corrected. Meanwhile, we are treated to expository songs from the doctors, about the diagnostic value of still, bromance, a new mother who wants to return to work but feels like she'd be judged, and Dr. Elliot's dilemma -- whether to let JD move in with her to her new house, or to be honest about wanting her own place.Next we reviewed Buffy's musical episode, Season 6 Episode Episode 7, "Once More With Feeling." In this episode, a demon is summoned that makes everyone in town sing their feelings, even when they intend to withhold them. Despite the danger that if they don't stop this, people will implode, the characters are motivated to end this so they don't continue to reveal what they had been hiding -- Buffy is resentful that her friends resurrected her unknowingly pulling her out of heaven, Spike loves Buffy but is struggling with feeling used, Anya and Xander are looking forward to their marriage but also terrified that things will change. This episode is high effort and high production, and it's often the very top of the list for musical episodes.Lastly we have an episode of Futurama, Season 5 Episode 16, "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings." In this episode, main character Fry wants to woo his coworker Lela, but he doesn't believe he has the talent to make the meaningful music she inspires in his mind real. He's learning an instrument and is struggling. He makes a deal with a devil robot that he will swap his hands for a random set of more talented hands. He lucks out and randomly gets the devils hands. The devil wants them back and will engage in chicanery to do it. But in the mean time, Fry becomes a famous musician and is able to put on the show he means to for Lela.

In Once More With Feeling (S6 E7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Sunnydale bursts into song, Spike and Buffy are drawn together, and Dawn is once again in peril in the Buffy musical episode. Along with the recap, this podcast episode focuses on: (1) how a tight plot structure, including subplots, gives Once More With Feeling emotional power; (2) escalating conflict that keeps the story moving; (3) whether misdirects about Xander and Dawn play fair with the audience; (4) why it might not matter who summoned the demon; and (5) why subverting expectations works so well here. This week, Aled Thomas and Vivian Asimos chat about the famous musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “Once More With Feeling”. We chat about the Christian influence on the ideas of Heaven and Hell in the Buffy verse, and how Spike is one of the best vampires. We also chat about the overall themes of communication, of speaking one's heart, and it's impact on the formation and relationship of society and culture, and the ever-present argument between free will and determinism in all of Buffy's episodes - but most notably in the musical episode. Hopefully you'll say you're happy with this episode, once more with feeling.Check out Vivian's video essay on Buffy's episode “Hush” hereFollow Aled on twitterFollow Vivian on Twitter or Instagram, or her blog Incidental Mythology.Follow the pod on twitter, or shoot us an email at: religionpopculturepod@gmail.com

First up this week, we're getting high with Walter and listening to him work out his issue through noir steampunk narrative. Brown Betty is a beautiful and fun episode, but in terms of plot and character development nothing much changes. We discuss once again the specialty episode gold standard that is Once More With Feeling. Next, Peter solos a case with Martha Plimpton, basically spewing is crazy all over her and then accidentally solving it. Most importantly, though, we meet Mr. Secretary: Walternate.

Our guest is singer Steven Maglio whose sound is reminiscent of the great Frank Sinatra. THE NEW YORK TIMES said of Steve, “Steven Maglio does not have blue eyes, but with his smooth croon & Rat Pack swagger, listeners just might imagine they were at the Copa Room at the Sands in 1963.” While Steven Maglio is a singer of standards. Although he is especially appreciated for his renditions of songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, he is NOT an impersonator. https://www.stevenmaglio.com/home THE BEGINNING I was born in East Harlem, N.Y. on December 25, 1958. In 1966, we moved to the Bronx, and being the new kid on the block, I walked back and forth to school alone for the first few weeks. I heard Frank Sinatra singing “My Kind Of Town,” and to pass the time on my new daily trek, I would sing the song to myself over and over. After a few days, I decided I needed another song and began to explore the only Sinatra album we owned at the time, “A Man And His Music.” This was the beginning of my addiction, not only to Sinatra, but to that whole world of standard songs and singers. It wasn't until age 43, after eight years of secretly taking voice lessons and one year of cruising the New Jersey karaoke circuit, that I made my professional debut at New York City's “Tavern On The Green,” as male vocalist with Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in June, 2002. Since then I've performed from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, from Cape Cod to Nashville, from Palm Beach to Beverly Hills, and from Brazil to Ecuador to Italy. In 2004, I started performing Frank Sinatra tribute shows at The Carnegie Club in New York, and I'm still singing there every Saturday evening. I've had the pleasure of entertaining President & Mrs. Donald Trump, Lisa Lampanelli, Vic Damone, Connie Francis, Jackie Mason, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, William Shatner, Brad Garrett, Dennis Farina, The Kennedy Family, and most of the cast of “The Sopranos,” just to name a few. As well as multiple sports figures, politicians, business moguls, and members of the press. I've had the honor of sharing the stage with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Frankie Valli, Wayne Newton, Dionne Warwick, Deana Martin, Tony Danza, Danny Aiello, Steve Tyrell, Joe Piscopo, Bucky Pizzarelli, Pat Cooper, Norm Crosby, Larry King, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Spinners, and on a few occasions with Frank Sinatra's former pianist/conductor, Vincent Falcone, among others. I've appeared in the movies, “Frank & Alice,” “Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn,” “Once More With Feeling,” and in the music video, “For One More Day.” I've also sung “The Tender Trap” on the soundtrack of “My Best Friend's Girl.” In the Off-Broadway play, “Playing Sinatra,” my recordings of 11 popular Sinatra songs were used to replace the originals. I've released three CDs, “You Belong To Me & other songs Sinatra never recorded,” “Songs For Sinatra Lovers,” and “Sinatra en Bossa Nova.” Special highlights in my career were being the co-writer and official singer of “The Danny DeVito Limoncello Song,” used to promote the lemon flavored liquore that bore Danny DeVito's signature. Joining the all-star cast of The Cannolis television show. Becoming a member of the most prestigious organization in show business, The Friars Club. It's been a wild ride, and I'm far from being finished. The most common compliment paid to me is, “If Frank Sinatra heard the way you sing his songs …. he'd be proud.” AND I HOPE THAT'S TRUE ….. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support

Don't you love it when you just burst into song out of nowhere? J and Brian give you something to sing about in Once More With Feeling.
Eric Weinberger's "Once More With Feeling" is a story of fidelity and infidelity set in the world of guided tourism. The story's protagonist Adam steers his tour groups around locales emblematic of diplomacy and international negotiation as he encounters one couple who seem to manage a diplomatic menage of their own. The narrative follows him as he studies these two and contemplates a crisis in his own relationship.
