On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children's presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn't realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche. Ghostwatch, a drama produced for the BBC anthology series Screen One, is a British reality–horror/pseudo-documentary television film, broadcast on BBC1 on Halloween night, 1992. Written by Stephen Volk, and directed by Lesley Manning. Despite having been recorded weeks in advance, the narrative was presented as live television. During and following its first and only UK television broadcast, the show attracted a considerable furore, resulting in an estimated 1,000,000 phone call enquiries to the BBC switchboard on the night of broadcast, comprising a mixture of complaints and praise for the programme's unique presentation, these calls included a call from Michael Parkinson's own concerned mother and a very nervous 15 year old Ross.Ghostwatch has never been repeated on UK television. The story, based on the tale of the Enfield Poltergeist, was put into production months before and was complete fiction. The presentation contained realistic elements which suggested to a casual viewer that it was an actual documentary. The studio scenes were recorded in Studio D, BBC Elstree Studios, Clarendon Road. The scenes at the house and the street were all shot on location around 5–6 weeks before the recording of the studio scenes. The recorded scenes in the house and street were then played into the studio, where Michael Parkinson, Mike Smith, and "Doctor Pascoe" had to interact with them.It earned the dubious honour of being the first TV programme to be cited in the British Medical Journal as having caused Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in children. As featured in his collection Dark Corners, screenwriter Stephen Volk wrote a short story entitled 31/10, which is effectively a sequel to Ghostwatch. The piece was later selected for "The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 2007".The Apparition PhaseWill Macleanhttps://www.penguin.co.uk/books/1119138/the-apparition-phase/9781786091017.htmlNo one Gets out Alivehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY2TLiK27g4$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Aaaand here's another spooktobery new episode of It IS The Same Log (because these days we are *all* Heather in the woods sobbing "It's not the same log!" over and over again but... I gotta tell ya... it *is*) and once again I (Jack) am joined by Elliot Chapman and George Daniel Lea. This time we tackle the legendary and infamous Ghostwatch, created and aired by the BBC in 1992 much to their own horror. Written by Stephen Volk, directed by Lesley Manning. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostwatch I would probably call this one of my very favourite pieces of uncanny media, brilliantly crafted, genuinely scary, and a veritable bottomless pit of implications. I don't find much disagreement from my co-hosts and, once again, our enthusiasm runs riot. We cover many topics from the BBC internal reaction, the public furore, media 'realism', gothic marxism, etc. We were even plagued during recording by terrifyingly appropriate technical glitches. Skype got media hauntological on our asses. Once again, my backers got days of advance access. We talk to Stephen Volk - Screenwriter and Novelist who created the landmark TV drama Ghostwatch. What was you doing on Halloween night back in 1992? I was sat at my friend's house watching the BBC and a show that would have us all screaming at the screen. We knew all along it was a Drama and not real life even though it was presented by Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith and Craig Charles - of course we did.... didn't we? Almost thirty years later, 'Pipes' is still as terrifying to this very day (just that name alone send chills - 'Pipes'). It was a pleasure to chat to the show's creator all about his career and this landmark TV event that had 11 million viewers on it's broadcast and received thousands of phone calls - many of which were complaints! Never to be repeated and hidden by the BBC, it truly was and is, a one of a kind event and it was amazing to chat to Stephen all about it as we approach Halloween! This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee.https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

Stephen Volk wrote Ghostwatch, the 1992 TV play which rated so highly on Kirsty, Stella and Dan's list of Movies That Scared Us The Most last year. And Ghostwatch is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Stephen's diverse array of horror output in a variety of media, including prose fiction: his new collection of stories featuring a teaming of the legendary literary detectives C Auguste Dupin and Sherlock Holmes, has just been released by PS Publishing. In this lengthy interview, Stephen discusses these new and old triumphs, and many things that came between them in his remarkable career, including times spent in Hollywood, his work with directors Ken Russell and William Freidkin, and what he thought of Inside Number 9's Ghostwatch tribute episode from 2018. Ian, Stella, Kirsty and Dan were just thrilled to be able to speak to him, as will probably be apparent to the listener. Elsewhere, Howard calls in to chat about how life is treating him in lockdown, what he's been watching on TV lately, and to pluck another surprise horror film from The Bag of Death. Getting to talk to the man that has heavily influenced my own writing was a real honour. Ghostwatch was a 1992 BBC Halloween TV show that, as a child, shook me to the very core. It opened my mind to just what was possible with horror and this interview revealed so many nuggets of Ghostwatch GOLD, I wasnt sure if I could truly call myself a fan anymore as I had no idea how many layers this onion really had. We speak about alternative casting (Sarah Greene was not first choice!) We speak about potential sequels to GHOSTWATCH and we discuss the show's influence on horror as a whole. In my mind, Stephen is a complete genius but I will never forgive him for making me afraid to go into the corner of my bedroom for the last two decades. Hope you enjoy and you can find out more about Stephen at his website http://www.stephenvolk.net/ and on twitter https://twitter.com/Stevevolkwriter. You can find me on twitter https://twitter.com/Jedshepherd Next week I speak to an amazing actress and director about her new Netflix film, so see you then!
