Twenty years since their debut, Maxïmo Park's A Certain Trigger announces itself with angular guitars, driving rhythms, and Paul Smith's earnest, impassioned vocals that give the songs both urgency and heart. Tracks like “Apply Some Pressure” and “Graffiti” capture the restless energy of youth, the album skillfully marries wiry indie-rock grit with pop immediacy. The band carved out their own voice amid a crowded scene that included the likes of The Futureheads, Bloc Party, The Kaiser Chiefs, and more post-Britpop bands with tight arrangements and inspired studio choices with a variety of keyboard sounds. As the awesome Christian metal band once stated...."can't stop us...can't stop us...can't stop us NOWWWWWWWWWWW"
Famed for starting a Doors covers band to supplement income performing their own music, Field Music's David Brewis says it shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite sharing rehearsal spaces with 2000's mainstream indie bands The Futureheads and Maximo Park, the Brewis brothers had no interest in pleasing anyone else; only making music for themselves. Coming up to 20 years since their debut album, the Sunderland trio have nearly always done everything in-house, from self producing albums to driving themselves on tour. David has put his high level maths ability to good use on tour balance sheets while his brother Peter took what he learned working at youth centres to task in their band life. They play in London, Leeds and Sunderland to celebrate their anniversary in November, find more info and tickets at https://field-music.co.uk/ Get yourself some top class Shure microphone gear: https://shu.re/3YhV7p2 DistroKid makes music distribution fun and easy with unlimited uploads and artists keeping the ENTIRETY of their revenue. RATE BUSH! What are your most favorite and least-loved songs on Kate Bush's Hounds of Love? Three months before strange things catapulted Miss Bush into a new generation's consciousness, Sam had us sit down to dissect an album that most purists wouldn't dare break into separate parts. While Adam went overboard (groan) researching the second side's epic Ninth Wave song story, newbies Dan and Jim obliviously took it in like men with children in their eyes...or something. Guest rankers include keyboard guru and Abbey Road expert Brian Kehew (Moog Cookbook, The Who, Prince and more) and San Diego Music Award winner Marie Haddad from the world's greatest coverband, Baby Bushka. Hear it at WeWillRankYouPod.com, Apple, Spotify and your running shoe outlet. ***This episode was recorded in February of 2022, a few months before Stranger Things made Kate Bush a hero to a whole new generation and eight months before we finally edited and released it. Three years later, we received notice that we had to remove music from a dozen episodes of ours. Because we're a music podcast, we're allowed to play clips under music criticism laws so they let us keep the episodes intact. We recently noticed that this episode had disappeared though. Can't get a straight answer about why this one wasn't spared so we're re-uploading it without Kate's music. If you want to hear it in all of its original unedited glory, drop us a note on social media and we'll send it to you. We're not making a dime on this, unless you Venmo us (ahem) at WeWillRankYouPod. In fact, we buy every single song you hear on the show. We love you, Kate. It's still a fun listen without the tunes. Enjoy episode one of my conversation with The Futureheads? Look, I know this podcast thing is a one way conversation, but I'm going to presume that you did given that you appear to have come back for more. Yes, what follows is the rest of my conversation with The Futureheads' Barry Hyde and Ross Millard, and it includes, among other things, some titbits about what the Sunderland band might do next. Just a reminder that this podcast is going on a break for a little bit, but it won't be long and when it returns it'll be shiner that it has been in the two hundred episodes to date. But first things first, here's Barry and Ross, and just to remind you of where we're at, we're talking about Shakin' Stevens. Enjoy the episode! I can't believe it took 199 episodes but I finally got, not just one of my favourite bands, but a group I grew up with – an outfit that I've known and championed for my entire career as a music journalist – on an episode of the podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, all who fall in between, on this episode I'm speaking to Ross Millard and Barry Hyde from Sunderland new wave punk pop art rock sensations, The Futureheads. I first met The Futureheads when I was just eighteen years old. They were even younger. They used to play my club night, Boyeater, all the time. Over the years we've shared all sorts of adventures together. Some of them in music spaces, many of them outside of music, and on this episode we revisit some of our shared memories, but also look to the future - no pun intended. I'm splitting this conversation over two episodes, with part two, episode 200, following tomorrow, after which I'm going to be taking another break from the podcast. The difference this time is that I know I'll be coming back - but coming back with some aesthetic changes. Stick around, you'll dig it!But for now... it's The Futureheads! Marty Ryan of Limerick band Anna's Anchor joins us as we dive into the sweaty indie night in 2006 to talk about landfill indie. All the greats are mentioned, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats. We also try to figure out what makes a landfill indie band and take some time to mention the bands that get lumped into that genre that we still actually like quite a lot like The Futureheads and Maximo Park. Marty is the frontman of Anna's Anchor. Their new album The Merries is out now on Strange Brew. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Andrea @AndreaCleary_. For the last ten years, Pop Recs Ltd – initially a publicity stunt, then a record shop, then a venue, now so much more - has been at the heart of the music community in Sunderland, the place that I, for a time, called my home. Founded by Frankie & The Heartstrings duo Michael McKnight and the late Dave Harper, now aided and abetted by my old friend and punk pizza supremo Dan Shannon, Pop Recs is on its third incarnation, now being based at the bottom end of Sunderland's High Street West. If you're in town, make sure you swing by for a coffee and a bop, won't you? Pop Recs celebrated this decade of struggle and triumph last Saturday with two instore performances by local heroes The Futureheads, and while I couldn't attend, it's heartening to see that the culture within a city I care about greatly continues to thrive thanks to the DIY spirit that's produced so much great music this last twenty plus years. What follows is a feel-good conversation about the past, the future, the forever missed Dave Harper, and a bit of inside baseball lols that might only make sense if you were part of the Sunderland indie rock scene circa the turn of the millennium. Happy birthday Pop Recs! Here's to many more happy returns! IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Lineup: Crows, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Stooges, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Heavy Lungs, Spiritualized, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Fuck Buttons, BAMBARA, Parquet Courts, Preoccupations, Gilla Band, Death Grips, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, Ginuwine, Velcro Hooks, Turbowolf, Pulled Apart By Horses, Cold War Kids, LIFE, Death From Above 1979, Foals, The Futureheads, Archie Bronson Outfit, Spring King, Fontaines D.C., Metz, The Walkmen, LICE, SOFT PLAY, A Place To Bury Strangers, Beak, Death In Vegas, Arab Strap, SUUNS, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Spectres, Mogwai, Q Lazzarus, IDLES, Fugazi, DEN, Future Islands, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Cure, The National, Einstürzende Neubauten, To Rococo Rot

RATE BUSH! What are your most favorite and least-loved songs on Kate Bush's Hounds of Love? Three months before some very strange things catapulted Miss Bush into a new generation's consciousness, Sam had us sit down to dissect an album that most purists wouldn't dare break into separate parts. While Adam went overboard (groan) researching the second side's epic Ninth Wave song story, newbies Dan and Jim obliviously took it in like men with children in their eyes...or something. Dutch Uncles are an indie pop band from Manchester, UK. They have released five albums, toured with bands such as Paramore, The FutureHeads, and Bombay Bicycle Club, and played an array of UK and European tours, including a slot at Glastonbury 2017, on the back of their fifth record, ‘Big Balloon'. In this episode, I chat to frontman Duncan Wallis, about the band's history from college, choosing their sound/style away from typical Oasis/Roses Manchester vibes, touring with Paramore, challenges faced in terms of logistics, radio airplay and songwriting, finally playing Glastonbury in 2017, themes of their work, and their ‘Chips Of Chorlton' podcast, based in Manchester, UK. Excellent insight into the journey of a band. Thank you, Duncan! Dutch Uncles are available on all streaming platforms, and their website ‘DutchUncles.co.uk', and if you enjoyed, you can find out more about ComebaCK at @thecomebackwithck on Instagram. Want to accelerate growth and increase your recruitment business profits? According to Nathan Callaghan, it's about hiring the right people and creating a culture where they can thrive. Nathan is Managing Director at Futureheads Recruitment - an award winning recruitment company based in London with a team of 30. They have been awarded Great Place to Work multiple times as well as listed on the London Stock Exchange's 1000 companies to inspire Britain several years in a row. I asked Nathan about the factors that contributed to Futureheads being ranked by Recruiter Magazine as one of their Hot 100 companies, based on GP/employee. Some of the success factors he shared include niche market specialization, clear company values, a culture of collaboration and a career path that allows people to play to their strengths. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:20] Two pointers to keep in mind to thrive while specializing in your niche. [4:55] Managing the client journey - Nathan shares how they make it easy to engage with clients. [10:39] Getting the balance in giving your team freedom of creativity while upholding company standards. [14:50] Key lessons in 2020 that shaped Futureheads decision making in 2021. [22:55] The non-negotiable values that were upheld during the challenging times of the pandemic. [35:00] Great approach to capture massive opportunities in the current market while establishing a career path for your team. [45:30] How to assign your team to their area of focus to establish fluidity and coherence. [52:08] Attributes that are more important than experience - what to look for when hiring. The Benefit of Being Niche Market Specialists I asked Nathan about their approach to niche specialization. Futureheads has a deep and genuine commitment to being experts who focus on a handful of digital specializations rather than “tackling a bit of everything.” I am a big believer of niche specialization so it was interesting hearing Nathan lay out how and why they do it this way. Nathan shared insights on how to increase your success while specializing in your niche: You must balance the rigour of good recruitment practice alongside genuine interest in the space. As you scale, it is really important to put a strong client management process around that niche focus. Is the 360 Model Outdated? Futureheads Wants their Recruitment Consultants to Play to their Strengths One positive impact of the pandemic for Futureheads was redesigning their business model and adopting a more collaborative approach. Nathan explained that the management team started questioning, “why are we asking people to conform to the 360 model?” He elaborated: “If we want our people to really thrive and reach their peak performance, let's stop pushing people to do things where the enjoyment and engagement isn't there. Let's create career paths where they can play to their strengths and focus on the component of the job that makes sense to them, whether that's client acquisition, process management, candidate engagement. Giving people control back is really working for us.” According to Nathan, some people can perform well as 360 degree Consultants, but the majority of people truly excel at either the client side or candidate side, not both. He believes they'll get the most out of people and have a happier, more engaged team if everyone plays to their strengths. At futureheads, Consultants can choose whether they want to focus on client acquisition, candidate generation or process management. The Consultants then partner with each other and collaborate to complete projects and make placements. Interestingly the job titles and career paths are the same for both sides of the desk, so Consultants who are excellent at candidate generation and engagement have the same opportunities for promotion as the business developers who open new accounts. What Attributes Make a Successful Recruitment Consultant? Futureheads were recognized by the Recruiter Magazine's Hot 100 List which is the most successful recruitment companies in the UK based on GP per employee. They are now looking for future growth. Nathan mentioned they are hiring and focus more on people who have the right attributes, rather than necessarily having recruitment experience. So I asked him “what are the top attributes you look for more than the experience? Here are the takeaways: Genuinely caring about what you do The ability to maintain a level head during the best and worst of times Strong work ethic, which for Nathan doesn't mean unnecessary long hours, but rather “output you deliver while you're at work.” Our Sponsors This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro®. i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Reportaż o młodej artystce z Lublina, która podbija Stany Zjednoczone. Katarzyna Kapri Dąbrowska jest laureatką prestiżowej nagrody Hollywood Music in Media Awards 2020 za tekst do utworu „Dolar Song”. Jak wygląda ścieżka kariery z Lublina do Hollywood? Wśród nominowanych do nagrody byli tacy muzycy jak: Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Sia. Jak lubelinianka znalazła się wśród takich sław? Kapri to wokalistka, autorka tekstów i performerka. W rodzinnym Lublinie występowała wielokrotnie, między innymi w 2008 roku supportując rockowy zespół The Futureheads. Oprócz muzyki kocha konie, ale wypadek uniemożliwił jej trenowanie jeździectwa. Obecnie mieszka w Hollywood w Kalifornii i pracuje z liczącymi się w branży producentami i artystami. Fot. Episode 62 of Radical Research challenges the notions of identity, probes at both the masks and the faces themselves. What biology occurs when the firstborn cleaves to the breast of another? This conversation claws at the God-playing reconstructions of Type O Negative, Ulver, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, and Gorgoroth, among others. To do or to undo? That is the question. Note I: Correction: Jeff quotes a line from A Perfect Circle/Failure's “The Nurse Who Loved Me” as “say hello to the floor's topography.” Obviously it's “the rug's topography.” We couldn't be more embarrassed, because that is one of the greatest lyrics in rock history and it deserves better than us. Oops. Note II: Big Dumb Skulls is mentioned in this episode, by way of talking about our pal Matt Johnsen. If you're uninitiated and curious about the ridiculous project Jeff dreamed up with Matt, check it out here: www.bigdumbskulls.com Note III: This is the fourth Radical Research episode to feature something about Norway's mighty Ulver. For the record, the other three are episodes 1, 16 and 33. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.
It can't be too long before we find a fifth excuse… Note IV: We encourage anyone who 1) listens to Radical Research, and 2) wears clothes, to head over to https://www.earthinsound.org/store and buy their Confessor, Disharmonic Orchestra, Ras Algethi and Old Lady Drivers shirts!! The Futureheads burst onto the indie music scene in 2004 with their distinctive vocal harmonies and art-punk influences. They've released six studio albums featuring a whole host of hit singles, including Decent Days and Nights, Meantime, Skip to the End, The Beginning of the Twist and perhaps the greatest cover of all time, Hounds of Love. Guitarist and vocalist Ross Millard tells The Boys in the Band Podcast how that Kate Bush cover came about and also discusses how the Sunderland four-piece boomed in the 2000s, took their experimental approach to new levels in 2012 and why, after a long hiatus, they made their comeback in 2019. Plus there's a really interesting discussion about mental health in the music business, from the challenges bands face when they're on the road to the support they receive. The Futureheads fan? This week the mod world is full up with cool sounds both new and old. New from The Futureheads and Ocean Colour Scene, and old from the likes of The Doors and Pimlico. It's a good show, I guarantee it. If you've been perusing past shows and find some that aren't currently available just leave me a comment and I'll put them back online. Storage and bandwidth cost money, so some of the older shows aren't available anymore. That's why I do the From The Vaults shows where I dust off old modcasts and repost them. Be sure to head over to the show page at mistersuave.com for a complete track listing, bonus videos, links to band sites, and more.
