On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children's presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn't realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche. It's episode 295…and what big eyes you have, what big hands you have. Ghostwatch (1992) was broadcast ‘as live' on BBC 1, on Halloween night in 1992, and saw TV stalwarts Michael Parkinson and Sarah Greene trying to prove the existence of the paranormal by taking a camera crew to ‘the most haunted house in Britain'. While the show documented the Early family's suffering at the hands of Mr Pipes, the poltergeist, the real story began after the show's broadcast, where tens of thousands felt duped by its immaculate recreation of 1990s live broadcasting tropes. We break down an underrated shout for the most influential horror movie of all time, discuss a directorial tour-de-force that left a nation unable to trust some of its most beloved presenters, ponder the various reasons for the furore that followed its broadcast and wonder whether Ghostwatch could ever be made today. All of which leads to one question: How would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: the studio's...completely dark. Just... just blackness. Next time on the main feed, we're watching Censor (2021), while on the Patreon we're looking at cult classic Possession (1981).

This time, we listened to and read Ringing the Changes by Robert Aickman. Robert Fordyce Aickman was an English conservationist and writer. As a conservationist, he played a key role in preserving and restoring England's inland canal system. As a writer, he is best known for his supernatural fiction, which he described as "strange stories."On his mother's side, Aickman was the grandson of the prolific Victorian novelist Richard Marsh. Marsh is known for his occult thriller The Beetle, a book as popular in its time as Bram Stoker's Dracula. Aickman is best known for his 48 "strange stories," published across eight volumes.Podcast favorite Jeremy Dyson has adapted Aickman's work in various forms. Listen to episode 8 for our most in-depth look at Jeremy's work. A musical version of Aickman's short story The Same Dog, co-written by Dyson and Joby Talbot, premiered in 2000 at the Barbican Concert Hall.In 2000, Dyson, along with his League of Gentlemen collaborator Mark Gatiss, adapted Ringing the Changes into a BBC Radio Four play, airing exactly twenty years after the CBC adaptation. This adaptation was intended to start a tradition of 'An Aickman Story for Halloween,' but unfortunately, it did not continue. Dyson also directed a 2002 short film based on Aickman's story The Cicerones, with Gatiss as the principal actor. It is this Dyson/Gatiss adaptation that we listened to for this episode. (Thanks to ‘Mysterious Magpie' for putting this up on YouTube so we could listen to it)The cast includes George Baker as Gerald. Baker is known for his roles in The Dam Busters as Flight Lieutenant D. J. H. Maltby, Tiberius in I, Claudius, D.C.I. Wexford in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Decider Logrin in the Doctor Who story Full Circle, and appearances in two James Bond films. Fiona Allen plays Phrynne. Allen is an actress and writer known for 24 Hour Party People, Smack the Pony, and Poirot. She has been married to Michael Parkinson since April 2001. This surprised Ross when writing this until he discovered it wasn't ‘That' Michael Parkinson (see episode 18 of this podcast for more about him). Instead, it's the patronymic son of the chat show legend, whom she met while he was working as a location manager on Smack the Pony. Confused? I am! Friend of the show Mark Gatiss appears as the Narrator and Mr. Pascoe, the landlord. Commandant Shortcroft is played by Michael Cochrane, known for his role in 280 episodes of The Archers, Arnold (Private Godfrey) Ridley in We're Doomed! The Dad's Army Story, and for playing three different characters in three different episodes of Heartbeat.Barbara Shelley plays Mrs. Pascoe. Known to our podcast listeners for her portrayal of Barbara Judd in the Hammer version of Quatermass and the Pit (reviewed in episode 34), she also starred in The Village of the Damned (which we need to review soon), Dracula: Prince of Darkness (one of the Dracula films we still need to cover), Rasputin: The Mad Monk, The Gorgon, and the 1958 Hammer wannabe Blood of the Vampire, written by Jimmy Sangster. She also appeared in both Blake's 7 and Doctor Who— as I'm sure James is dying to know, we can tell you she played Sorasta in Planet of Fire and was considered for the role of Tanha in Snakedance… but that's enough Doctor Who for now… Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. ‘Ghostwatch', a Halloween drama in the style of a documentary, reached 11 million viewers on its first and only UK broadcast on BBC 1, on 31st October, 1992. It starred Sarah Greene, Craig Charles, Mike Smith, and - in a stroke of genius - trusted veteran broadcaster Michael Parkinson, who became possessed by the voice of ‘Pipes' as the programme reached its terrifying climax.  The show caused outrage for its disturbing content and the way it blurred the line between fact and fiction. Most of the 30,000 complainants didn't believe the events portrayed were real; they were simply distressed that the BBC would make a horror drama that borrowed the visual language of current affairs television. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the entire cast and crew were holed up in a Chiswick sailing club during the transmission; consider how the show's pioneering style influenced the likes of Derek Acorah and ‘Most Haunted'; and document the astonishing effect the show allegedly had on young viewers…  Further Reading: • ‘Ghostwatch is 30: "It got a reputation as something subversive"' (Radio Times, 2022): https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/ghostwatch-oral-history-rt-rewind/ • ‘30 years on, Ghostwatch is still as haunting as ever' (Little White Lies, 2022): https://lwlies.com/articles/30-years-on-ghostwatch-is-still-a-haunting-watch/ • ‘Ghostwatch' (BBC, 1992): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JkEbGMEXVs Love the show? He gives an update on inconsiderate travelers, foods that he ate on the trip (he wants credit for eating seafood), and some incidents that led him to believe he is now traveling while old. Daniel gave us a running update that included plans for RunDisney Springtime Surprise, talked about his new maid, gave a hybrid work update, chatted about Electric Vehicles, and compared commercials on Fox News network to those on MSNBC. We also had a contact segment, a call out to some celebrity deaths in our Celebrity Death Phone segment, including Michael Parkinson, and went over a few things in history that happened on this day. Sir Michael Parkinson was a journalist, broadcaster, and arguably Britain's greatest television chat show host. During a TV career than spanned six decades, Parky interviewed hundreds of the world's most famous stars. Sir Michael died on 16th August 2023. For Last Word, John Wilson talks to Sir Michael's son Mike about his father's life and career. Starting with his upbringing in a council house in Cudworth, near Barnsley, discussing his relationship with his parents, and later with his wife Mary. In this revealing special edition, Mike says his father was "constantly questioning himself" after joining the mainstream media and "didn't have as much self-confidence as he appears". He also tells of how despite going on to success at both Granada Television and ITV, Sir Michael harboured "an innate distrust of the establishment. It's A-level results day and the message from the Education Secretary is to urge students not to worry too much about the results, that no-one will ask about them in 10 years' time. The PM has also said that there are plenty of other options available to those who didn't get the grades they need. But is this really the message for ministers to send to kids who have been studying for these things for years? And would they be saying the same to their own kids? The A-Z of Q - Part One! Writer & podcaster Adam Leslie joins Tyler for the first of a two-parter, examining Spike Milligan's Q series on BBC Television, from Q5 in 1969 to Q9 in 1980 (there was also There's A Lot of It About in 1982 but we don't really talk about that). It was heralded as a massively influential show, particularly upon the group which would shortly after the transmission of Q5 come together to create Monty Python's Flying Circus, yet by the end, while it was still extremely funny in places, it was showing its age with some of Spike's comedy stylings seeming creaky when compared to those hip and happenin' young comedy turks behind Not The Nine O'Clock News. Adam & Tyler run through Q from A-N this week, taking in such topics as David Lodge's greatest film, Jehovah's Burglars, bosoms & battleaxes, raspberries, Michael Parkinson with a Black & Decker and much much more! There's also some background to the creation of Q5 and a salute to the many stalwart regulars, including the aforementioned Lodge, Bob Todd and, of course, John Bluthal. Next week: O-Z!

Today, Tuesday 28th February 2023, our beloved and esteemed colleague, Henry McDonald will has been laid to rest. This episode is a tribute to Henry, with excerpts of a small selection of some of his excellent interviews for Constructive Voices. Additionally, a few guests and colleagues pay tribute to him. Henry was a talented, prolific, versatile and empathetic journalist, author and broadcaster. He was also a very special, kind human being. He was invited to become part of the team at Constructive Voices by our producer, Jackie De Burca, who had previously interviewed Henry McDonald. There was serendipity in this connection as Henry suggested to Jackie to interview some of the team at Changing Streams. Constructive Voices had always intended to make a positive difference in the industry. He spoke to Dr. Wendy Jones, the Scientific Lead and Climate Adviser firstly to tee up the hard facts behind the organisation. Then Henry spoke to Neal Maxwell, who set up Changing Streams after a life changing moment on a trip to the Artic. Neal had worked for thirty years in construction. Neal speaks to Jackie about Henry. If you knew Henry McDonald, you knew very well how much he loved football. And Everton and Cliftonville were his teams. He had already covered the story about the then proposed Everton football stadium with the renowned Liverpool expert, Prof. Michael Parkinson. Professor Michael Parkinson C.B.E. also pays tribute to Henry. Henry McDonald often talked to Jackie after his interviews and was almost always delighted with the guests he or we had chose for him to interview. Moving on to an episode that he was especially delighted with was Episode 13 about How Women Can Help Create Sustainable Change. This featured two wonderful women, Emma Nicholso
