OK, so this may not be a title that rings familiar to a lot of folks. But hear us out! The Last One To See wasn't conceived with the idea that everyone everyone has seen each of the selections, and Sarah very much understood the assignment (and Alan willingly agreed to go along with it) with the selection of BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER - a queer classic and rare entry in the lesbian teen movie genre that saw a 20th anniversary re-release in 2020. As mentioned, Alan and Sarah are our guests this week and you may know their work from the fantastic Juvenalia podcast. We were delighted to host a live CETA Digital March meeting in front of a terrific and engaged online audience. Featuring Laura Cahill of Comlamh, Dave Gibney of Mandate, Natasha Ariff of XR, Jennifer Whitmore of the Soc Dems, Lynn Boylan of Sinn Féin and Independent Senator Alice Mary Higgins. It has been a tumultuous few days for the Green Party. CETA (Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement) has caused a rift and with the party leadership seemingly intent on ratifying a deal they strenuously opposed only a few months ago, we were joined by Green Party MEP, Ciarán Cuffe to talk all about it. We discuss the deal, the way it has been handled and his own feelings on it. We talk about the Greens in government and the price of power. We also discuss the flawed Climate Action Bill, the Green New Deal for Europe and an upbeat Ciarán shares his views on the EU in 2020 and what he wants to see achieved in 2021. Speaking of 2021, we want to continue you to bring you these conversations, but we need your help to do so. Please go to: patreon.com/tortoiseshack and see if there's something that you can get behind. Artwork by @Ciaraioch see ciaraioch.com Music by Alan Maguire and David O'Doherty! Get well soon, Martin.

We were delighted to be joined by writer and journalist, Séamus Malekafzali, to take a deep-dive into this tiny country that is too often a strategic chess piece in the games of bigger powers. Today we are joined by Peace Commissioner and Experience Legal Executive, Roman Shortall, who spoke to #Liveline earlier in the week highlighting how he and his family were targeted at Dublin airport by SIU officers from An Garda Siochana and the Department of Social Protection. Roman's account has unearthed a scandal that is forcing the new government in to all sorts of twists and turns and which now encompasses ICCL, the DPC, FLAC and the opposition. The Oireachtas is the only body with the power to create legislation and yet it appears that the Department has taken it upon itself to firstly, overrule existing legislation, and secondly, create its own legislation. This looks set to end up in a High Noon showdown. Music written by Alan Maguire, performed by David O'Doherty, no really. Hit podcast Juvenalia specialises in taking their guests on a nostalgic journey through their formative years with abundant wit, grace and warmth. Longtime listeners of Be Grand (all six of them), on the other hand, are more accustomed to listening to what might as well be a drunken uncle with a JJ72 fetish who’s just been handed a microphone as he rants in the corner of the living room on Christmas Day. So, in a long-overdue act of self-improvement, Andy this week seeks advice from Juvenalia host and Not The RTÉ Guide creator Mr. Alan Maguire. Alan talks about what he’s learned in his time chatting to people about the idiosyncrasies of pop culture’s past and what are the common themes that surface when we look back with fondness. There’s also a profound discussion on the subtle art of nicknaming a teacher and how the smallest decisions you make in your school years can change your life in ways you’d never imagine. https://twitter.com/alan_maguire https://twitter.com/juvenalia_pod
Freelance journalist/podcast producer Ciara O'Connor Walsh, freelance journalist Naomi O'Leary and comedian Alan Maguire, talk about podcasting at the Autumn 2018 Freelance Forum, followed by Q&A. Session chaired by freelance journalist Margaret Ward.

What came first, the music or the misery? We invite podcaster Alan Maguire on to talk about Nick Hornby's classic High Fidelity, discussing relationships, break-ups, Jack Black's animal magnetism, performing your relationship for other people, the world of record shops, the biting insight that still makes us cringe in recognition, and whether we can cancel Rob in good faith when he's trying so hard to be less objectively awful. This week the two lads are joined by a very special guest, Alan Maguire of the Juvenalia podcast. In what is a jovial chat, filled with laughs and fuelled by pints the lads chat about a variety of topics. Eoin wanted to know if we'd rather be a dog or a ghost which unsurprisingly saw us regale tales of Casper, Homeward Bound and discuss the sexual capacity of a paranormal being., DJ always being on hand to lower the tone. We then delve into nostalgia, a concept at the core of Juvenalia. We chat about Beyoncé and her influence on the youth of today, we chat Marvel and it's slow acceptance of female and minority characters. We also get stuck into shows that we loved then but nearly loathe now. Finally, for some reason unbeknownst to anyone with a functioning adult brain Eoin decided he wanted to chat about the price of a haircut. All while having some tasty pints in Grady's Yard. Christmas is a time for overindulgence, so this week we present you with not one but two dumb guests, some bad crackers (mostly Alex's) and a few vagina jokes just for Christmas seasoning. Alan Maguire of Roast Chestnuts and Juvenalia podcast fame talks to Caroline about made-for-TV Christmas movies and why they're having a resurgence this year, Hannah finds out the frankly heartwarming story behind Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Alex gifts us a special Christmas poem and forces us to play games together (but it's Christmas bingo, so it's fine). Dr Jane Frail is also on hand with some useful advice about dealing with difficult family members when you're in close proximity with them, and finally trend reporter Lucy Vine joins us to tell us what we should be looking out for this winter. Your ex – the one who doesn’t like you as much as you like them and knows it – sends a “you up?” text at 11.32pm. Should you not pick up the phone… or, instead of replying, why not practice your Irish on Duolingo instead? The popularity of Duolingo’s Irish course flies in the face of critics of the language and has been a huge encouragement to those involved in the promotion of Irish. How can we capitalise on this interest? In this week’s episode, Darach and Peadar are joined by Alan Maguire and Ellen Tannam from Headstuff’s Juvenalia Podcast. Alan and Ellen have agreed to give Duolingo’s Irish course a go and report back on what they’ve learnt. It’s a tale of cats on turtles, inappropriate koalas, owlsplaining, film references and more crabs than you can shake a stick at. There are chats about new words and gender identity in anthromorphic creatures too! We had a scheduling mix-up so Alan and Ellen sat down and had a chat about the thing that they’d pick if they were a Juvenalia guest, The Simpsons. This is not a rigorous history of The Simpsons, we jump around a lot and probably get things wrong but this is OUR Simpsons so let us have it. Happy New Year. Comedian and podcaster Erin McGathy of This Feels Terrible, HarmonQuest and many other things joins Alan & Ellen to talk about Jim Henson’s 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. Rebecca Keane is a standup comedian, writer, and excellent Twitter person. She joined us to talk about the colossus of 90s Saturday evening entertainment, Stars In Their Eyes. We covered all the important topics like the niceness of Matthew Kelly and the bleakness of the intro videos. We brainstormed who we’d be if we ever got the chance to be on it and we managed to shoehorn in an impressive number of Drag Race references. Hope you like it! Well we did it. We did a live show at the Dublin Podcast Festival. We did a quiz that went on slightly longer than planned and then we talked to singer and actor Maria Doyle Kennedy of The Commitments, Orphan Black, The Tudors, Dexter, Father Ted, and loads more about The Wizard Of Oz with some detours along the way to talk about mermaids, ghosts, Billie Holiday, and Maria’s directorial debut A Different Kind Of Day, before we finished with a song from Maria and her husband Kieran (who is a lovely man) from Maria’s self-titled new album which is available now. As you can hear from the episode we were delighted to meet Maria and do a live episode so thanks to everyone who came and thanks to HeadStuff and Aiken for organising a podcast festival and letting us be a part of it. Thank you also to everyone at The Workman’s Club who made it happen and to Sarah Garvey for looking after us. Moone Boy and Nowhere Fast‘s Clare Monnelly joins us to talk about Animaniacs. We love Animaniacs a whole lot so it was an extreme pleasure to geek out about it for fifty minutes with our new best friend Clare. We talked about getting meta jokes as a child, the hidden filthy jokes, Pinky And The Brain, Good Idea Bad Idea, Chicken Boo, Slappy Squirrel, Hello Nurse, and all the gang. We also talked about just how impressive Rob Paulsen’s rendition of Yakko’s World is, being scared of Ren & Stimpy, renting games from Xtra-Vision, and the Commodore 64. Ciara Knight is a comedian and writer for Joe.co.uk. She’s very funny and we’re big fans of her and you should be too. She came into the dilapidated bunker where we record Juvenalia to talk about Sabrina, The Teenage Witch with Alan and Ellen. We talk about family secrets, terrible food museums, mitosis, Harvey, Salem, Violent Femmes, Sabrina’s best best friend, Britney guest spots, Daniel Bedingfield, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, celebrity noses, Paul Feig, and other things. It’s a fun time you guys. Follow Juvenalia on Twitter Juvenalia original artwork by Dee McDonnell This episode was produced by Alan Maguire
Lisa Coen is one half of Tramp Press. We’re big fans of Tramp Press here at Juvenalia so we were delighted when Lisa took a break from the world of high literature to talk to us about her love of Stephen King. As you might imagine, it took us a while to get through it all. Lisa knows so, so much about Stephen King, it was a joy to listen to her for nearly two hours. Sarah went into the episode not caring about Stephen King and came out a convert, clutching a copy of IT. You probably will too. We’ll leave you to it. If you like Juvenalia, maybe subscribe to us on your podcast app of choice and maybe, maybe, maybe leave a nice review? Thanks anyway if you don’t. Alan and Ellen were joined by comedian Liam Nugent and Fr. Declan Quigg of the Film Palz podcast to talk about The Exorcist. Things went awry. Truths were revealed. We all learned a lot about ourselves and each other. It’s kind of about The Exorcist and kind of about trendy loolas and kind of about The Godfather and kind of about Liam’s mam. We hope you like it. You can hear more from Fr. Quigg and occasionally Liam Nugent on the Sunday Sermon podcast. Liam Nugent performs regularly at his local community centre and tries out jokes on twitter Special thanks to Giles Brody and Peter McGann for putting us in touch with Quigg and Nugent. Roe McDermott is the Sex & Sexuality columnist for The Dublin Inquirer, a film critic for Hot Press, and a Fulbright scholar. Somehow, we convinced her to come on our podcast to talk about Wolfgang Petersen’s 1984 children’s fantasy classic The NeverEnding Story. Roe joined Sarah and Alan to talk youth, Trump, depression, feminism, rockbiters, safe spaces, Pantigate, and luck dragons, and we address the most important question of our time: Is Twitter actually Fantasia? The hour just flew by. Hello if you’re joining us for the first time because of a list you may have seen us on. Hopefully you’ll stick around. If you like us maybe consider subscribing and leaving a review? Also, Sarah’s AMAZING novel Spare And Found Parts is out now so you should buy it and enjoy it as much as I did. Sinéad Gleeson is a broadcaster, writer, editor of three short story anthologies, host of The Book Show on Radio One, half of The Anti-Room, and all round enviable sound person. She very kindly joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Top of the Pops and related matters. We were a little in awe of her because she’s very cool and interviews important authors and musicians all the time and we’re two plucky ragamuffins just trying our best. We plied her with donuts until she liked us and we had a good old chat. As well as TOTP, we talked about where the young people get their music from these days, hearing songs properly in big clubs, Buster Bloodvessel related accidents, interviewing Kate Bush and loads of other little bits. Juvenalia is eighteen episodes old! We can legally drink now. We wouldn’t do that though because drinking is immoral. Playwright Peter Dunne joins Alan & Ellen to talk about Jack Clayton’s extremely terrifying 1961 horror film The Innocents starring Deborah Kerr. We talked about all kinds of stuff: watching inappropriate things when you’re young which is basically the theme of Juvenalia, creepy children, Salem, Amityville, local mythology, whether any of us actually believe in the supernatural (spoiler: some of us do), Ouija boards, demonic possession, fear, nature v nurture, and loads more. Peter was great, we loved him. Obviously it would have been nice to get this episode out in time for Halloween but that’s not how we roll here and in fact, late November could be a perfect time to watch The Innocents for the first time. Who knows? Peter’s audio horror walking experience Eerie is in Smock Alley until November 30th so get your skates on and Peter’s extreme immersive horror club Morb could be happening anywhere, maybe even behind you right now. Probably not though, probably somewhere scary. Follow Juvenalia on Twitter Juvenalia original artwork by Dee McDonnell This episode was produced by Alan Bennett and Alan Maguire.
2FM DJ and writer Louise McSharry joins Alan Maguire and Sarah Maria Griffin to talk about 80s CLASSIC Dirty Dancing. We brought a wide range of Dirty Dancing experience to the episode. Louise has seen Dirty Dancing many, many times. Alan saw it once when he was like eight or nine. Sarah watched it for the first time that morning. Did she like it? Have a listen and find out. What else did we talk about? Good question. We talked: a lot about how dreamy Patrick Swayze is. A lot. A whole lot. About being too young to watch Dirty Dancing, about our respective weddings and the kinds of dancing we got up to, about plastic surgery, about fictional summer camps, about music, about The Fountainhead, and many other things. Welcome to the first of the Juvenalia minisodes. In this minisode, Alan Maguire and Ellen Tannam do a dramatic reading of chapter one of R.L. Stine’s Point Horror classic, Beach Party. More chapters will follow in future minisodes. Alan and Ellen have never read Beach Party and are excited to see where this all leads. Not much more to say about this one really. Enjoy. Alan Maguire and Ellen Tannam talk to writer Sarah Maria Griffin about a film that was important to her as a teenager, The Fifth Element. Questions asked and answered in this episode include: Is The Fifth Element a noir? Who would we cast in a gender-swapped The Fifth Element? Is Ruby Rhod a queer icon? Is Bruce Willis a hot dad? Could The Fifth Element be made today? Is it weird and cool that Ellen and Sarah had never met before this episode but have something very important in common? How did Sarah turn some of the issues with being a Woman Who Likes Sci-Fi on their head while writing her first novel Spare And Found Parts? Is there really any need to watch Breaking Bad or True Detective? How strong are Alan’s keratin levels? Also, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bruce Willis’s Disney Sex Thriller, Zelda, Twin Peaks, home cinemas built by dads, CAPITALISM, and loads more. We had a Very Good Chat as they call it in formal chat circles. That’s the official term for it. I checked. This is the first episode of Juvenalia. If you enjoyed it then why not subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher or similar? We’ve got some very cool, interesting people coming in to talk about pop culture that was important to them when they were young in upcoming episodes including Damon Blake, Jeanne Sutton, Sinéad Burke, Giles Brody, Emer McLysaght, Louise Bruton, and lots of other people that Alan follows on Twitter and wanted an excuse to hang out with briefly in real life. Ok, thanks for listening. bye for now, see you soon. Juvenalia original artwork by Dee McDonnell Mixed and edited by Alan Bennett
