Matthew and Riki dive into Severance Season 2, exploring the philosophical questions raised about identity, consciousness, and corporate culture while examining where the show succeeds and falls short in its sophomore season. Is Season 2 Living Up to the Promise of Season 1?Both hosts acknowledge feeling somewhat let down by Season 2, with Riki noting it "asks more questions than it answers" in typical mystery box fashion. While the first season brilliantly established the premise of people separating their work and personal consciousness, the second season prioritizes expanding the mysterious corporate lore rather than fully exploring the ethical questions at its core. What Makes Someone a "Real" Person? The most compelling aspect of Severance remains its exploration of what constitutes personhood. The show presents characters whose consciousness is split between "innies" (work selves) and "outies" (outside selves), raising profound questions about which version is the "real" person and whether eliminating one version constitutes a form of death. The hosts particularly praise Dylan's storyline, where his innie falls in love with his outie's wife, creating a fascinating ethical dilemma about identity and relationships.Does the Show Fall Into Problematic Tropes?Riki points out how the season finale's romantic choice falls into troubling tropes, with Mark S choosing Helly over his wife Gemma. The hosts discuss the racial implications of this storyline, noting how it perpetuates patterns where Asian women are portrayed as "damsels in distress" rather than equal romantic partners. This choice undermines the more profound philosophical questions about identity by reducing them to a conventional love triangle.Other Topics CoveredThe show's "mystery box" approach and whether it delivers satisfying answersOffice culture representation and corporate cults as commentary on modern tech companiesCharacter development for Harmony Cobel and the mysterious Miss WongThe metaphorical significance of severance in our own compartmentalized livesComparison to shows like Dollhouse that explore similar themes of identityThe cinematography and standout episodes from Season 2The hosts conclude that while Severance Season 2 has moments of brilliance, particularly in episodes like Harmony Cobel's hometown visit, it ultimately prioritizes expanding its mysterious lore over answering the profound ethical questions that made the first season so compelling. Though both hosts express disappointment with certain aspects of the season, they remain intrigued enough to continue following the series and its exploration of identity, corporate culture, and consciousness. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. The Ghouls dissect Severance Season 2's brilliant dual commentary: the fight for innie personhood alongside corporate America's modern "Sunken Place" for Black professionals. From Helly's rebellion to Milchick's blackface paintings, Apple TV's workplace thriller mirrors our reality of eroding worker rights, modern company towns, and the dehumanizing effects of capitalism. Jessica Lee Gagné: Pushing Boundaries in Severance Season 2

The Cinematography Podcast

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 308: Jessica Lee Gagné Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné is an essential creative force behind Severance on Apple TV+. She has an expanded role in the show's second season with a producer credit and directs the pivotal episode 207, “Chikhai Bardo.” The series' unique look and world-building is meticulously crafted through extensive testing and close collaboration between her and showrunner Ben Stiller, who also directs the majority of episodes. For Severance Season 2, Jessica embraced a darker aesthetic, intentionally tweaking the look from the previous season. Even within the artificial office environment of Lumon, she pursues a blend of natural realism and heightened visuals, favoring practical, in-camera effects whenever possible. Location shooting for the episodes “Woe's Hollow” and “Sweet Vitriol” required flexibility due to changing weather conditions. Unexpected foggy weather worked in the crew's favor while shooting “Woe's Hollow” and enhanced the spooky atmosphere of Irving's nightmare sequence. Inside the Lumon offices, lighting is pre-planned as part of the production design, with lights built into the ceiling and the set. Season 2 introduces more complex and colorful lighting cues compared to the first season, especially in the finale. Vibrant green and blue lighting creates a feeling of chaos during the “Choreography and Merriment” marching band performance, and intense red emergency lighting strobes down the halls as Mark and Helly attempt their escape. “Red is a color that we don't use in the show in general,” notes Jessica. “You have this association with love, passion, intensity with the color red. And then in the final shot, we land in this deep red moment with them, that was transferred onto film in the end and rescanned to give it an actual authentic feel.” Jessica decided she wanted to direct for the first time on season two, despite feeling nervous about it. She chose episode 207 “Chikhai Bardo,” which explores Gemma and Mark's past and depicts how Gemma is tormented at Lumon in different severed tests. “This was something that I really deeply wanted,” she explains. “I realized that on this show with the crew that knew me, the cast that knew me, with Ben (Stiller) supporting me and the producers as well, that this opportunity would never come up for me again in my life. I really needed to just go for it and give it my all.” Jessica also was director of photography for the episode, since she felt so familiar with creating the show's look. However, the dual role was challenging. “That was harder,” she admits. “And then working with myself was weird. I realized on set that everything was going so fast.” There was no pausing for a separate director-cinematographer discussion after takes, which meant turning to others for validation and support. Directing the cast was a rewarding experience and they welcomed her leadership. Jessica had extensive conversations with actress Dichen Lachman (Gemma) beforehand to explore her character's emotional state and shifting personalities within the episode. A significant element of episode 207's visual language involves sequences depicting Mark and Gemma's past, which were captured on film. While Severance primarily uses digital cameras, Jessica opted for both 35mm and 16mm film for the flashback moments. Borrowing a Bolex camera from the gaffer, she and director Ben Stiller shot some of these intimate sequences between Mark and Gemma on the fly. Jessica is currently in the process of directing her first feature. She will always have a deep appreciation for cinematography. “I feel like I have so much respect for that craft," she says. "After being in it for 15 years, I know what goes into it. I know how you have to be such a giving person to do that. And I really do love it so much.” You can see Severance on Apple TV+ Hear our previous interview with Jessica Lee Gagné about Severance Season 1.

If you want to find out more about this network and its efforts to connect Christian business leaders so that they can more effectively help their businesses and shape culture, visit businessmakers.network. Again, that’s businessmakers.network. Why is the soundtrack Epic which is about Homer’s Odyssey, suddenly so popular? Our writer Clarissa Alexandria created an article about this, and we can see that there are a few different reasons that could explain Epic's success, varying from the soundtrack’s content to its audience. For example, the music itself is good and fits the story, but that’s not the only thing. It also seems like the soundtrack has become popular for both what it is saying and to whom it is saying those things to. Epic centers around the story of the Odyssey, which deals with story themes that easily resonate in our world, as our writer Clarissa Alexandria points out: "It follows themes of exile, temptation, descent, and eventual renewal that should feel familiar to anyone who has studied the Scriptures or consumed a good story of any variety in their life." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/an-epic-alternative-to-woke-hollywood) Our broken culture relates to these themes because they understand the journey of Odysseus. His character lives through their own problems and experience, so people gravitate towards his story. For example, they understand his longing for home, because so many people feel the lack of real, good homes in our world. And yet while this cultural tie is strong, Epic also contains themes that are found in the Bible, which is also why these stories are so effective. After all, they align with how God designed the world. Meanwhile, on a different note, our reporter Justin Chartray wrote about how the State of Washington is having trouble trying to figure out how to deal with its taxes because while the liberals want to raise taxes, they are meeting opposition from the governor, even though he’s also a liberal. So, what’s going on in Washington State? Well, we can see that it has been very liberal recently in respect to their recent recognition of Muslim holidays, their attack on gun rights, and their unlawful orders against parental rights, but, as I just mentioned, its government can’t decide what to do with taxes yet. One of the reasons this tax issue is important is because Washington State needs a $12-15 billion deficit in order to uphold its current programs and bureaucracy. In order to pay for all this, Republicans want the state to withdraw from areas that the government should not concern itself with, such as education and immigration. Unsurprisingly, the democrats don’t want to lower the budget this way, though. Instead, they would prefer increasing everyone’s taxes, specifically targeting property taxes and rich people. With these property taxes, Washington State's government would want to keep changing the amount of taxes in order to match the growth of society and other outside conditions. But there’s a problem here. If the amount of taxes changes continually because it is dependent on variables that frequently change, then there is no truly objective wall or limit that could stop its government from demanding very heavy taxes. Nevertheless, these increased taxes would seem to meet the $15 billion budget deficit, but it would be through taxing people uninvolved with that deficit. However, while most of the liberals in power seem eager to adopt this strategy, the newest governor of Washington, Bob Ferguson, has rejected this plan. It appears that he doesn’t want to raise taxes to make the money they need. Despite his previous liberal actions, such as trying to sue the presidency of Trump almost a hundred times during Trump’s first time in office, Governor Ferguson is actually making a more Republican decision right now by rejecting these increased taxes. Did he change political parties? Our journalist Justin Chartray doesn’t think so: "No, Bob Ferguson has not become a conservative overnight. What he may represent is a rare callback to the previous generation of liberals; socially progressive but fiscally conservative. A dinosaur. A relic. A man woefully out of step with his progressive comrades and now, a fly in the ointment for their unending lust of the rich man’s gold." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/division-at-the-top) So, even though Ferguson isn’t a Republican or Conservative, he is still making a solid leadership move that serves the citizens of Washington State, who now have the opportunity to fight back against these unjust laws. We should pray that he continues this. If you want to find out more about this network and its efforts to connect Christian business leaders so that they can more effectively help their businesses and shape culture, visit businessmakers.network. Again, that’s businessmakers.network. We’ve talked about how Washington State has increased its gun laws and restrictions in previous episodes, so now it's time that we also talk about how to battle these unconstitutional fences around guns. So, how do we preserve the second amendment? Our journalist Justin Chartray wrote an article about this and reported that even though liberals may have the money, numbers, and votes, we can fight back their influence by helping the citizens of Washington State understand the true nature of a firearm. People need to know more about guns than just what popular media tells them. Jeremy Ball, a Washington State citizen who owns "Sharp Shooting Indoor Range and Gun Club", thinks that this is the best course of action to take because even though liberal influence has had a negative impact on guns, we also need to realize that many of us have not done our duty in teaching our kids how to handle guns properly. This blame also falls onto the gun industry itself. "We have not pushed back as an industry to get kids involved. We have failed to provide a positive outlook for them, and a positive outlet for teaching them safe firearm ownership and teaching them some of the things they get to do with guns." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/a-bright-future-in-sight) Not many people are raised properly around guns anymore, so when the left says that guns are evil, there’s no pushback because guns aren’t a part of our daily life or thought. This allows the left to control the narrative. This allows them to criminalize guns. So, the first step is that we need to get guns back into people’s hands, but we still need to do it in safe contexts. For example, one of the best ways to do this is through creating trap teams in schools that competitively shoot clay pigeons. We can fight back the broad and false narrative about guns by giving people, as Jeremy Ball says, a positive way to think about firearms. While it’s hard to make changes in liberal government and legislation, we need to realize that if we want long term effects, we need to focus on how parents and families understand firearms. We need to shape how the next generation will handle their responsibility of guns in a safe way that still honors everyone's second amendment rights. Jeremy Ball wants to preserve these rights, and he knows it will be hard. However, it’s not impossible: "It probably can be done. But it’s going to take parent(s) who are motivated to do it and to start pushing the issue. They expect gun store owners to lead the charge...but I can’t do it by myself. The approach needs to happen in the community, and if you make enough noise people will listen." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/a-bright-future-in-sight) Meanwhile, President Trump just issued a presidential memorandum yesterday about the security of the Southern Border. This memorandum will give the military more power to protect the Southern Border from external threats. As seen on the White House's website, President Trump, "assigned the Armed Forces of the United States the military missions of repelling the invasion and sealing the United States southern border from unlawful entry to maintain the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of the United States." (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/military-mission-for-sealing-the-southern-border-of-the-united-states-and-repelling-invasions/) President Trump wants our southern border to be stronger, so hopefully this memorandum will help accomplish that goal. Recorded: March 24th, 2025 Will Compton and Taylor Lewan are back with a heater of an episode featuring none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. But not only are The Boys back, but their bus is back to the OG paint job. We kick things off with some heavy March Madness talk, including behind-the-scenes stories from streaming the games with Delanie Walker and Clay Matthews. Will then celebrates his midwestern roots with a little NCAA College Wrestling Championships talk. In other news, Bussin’ merch drop is this THURSDAY. Will Compton reminds Tier 1's to make sure to check out BWTB.com and sign up for some early bird savings. To close the intro Will Compton finishes with some Severance Season 2 finale talk for all the Milchick Army sickos out there. Then, Dale Jr. hops on the bus, and things go full throttle. From stories about his early days rocking Budweiser colors to hilarious behind-the-scenes moments like having to poop mid-race. Dale talks about pre-race nerves, mental hurdles, and what it really takes to get a car into the Daytona 500. He also dives into what it feels like to carry the Earnhardt name, the NASCAR rule he’d change, and his thoughts on free agency in racing (yeah, it’s a thing). We also get the lighter side of Dale—from his biggest purchase regrets to his obsession with EA's College Football 25 and being a high-key gamer. Add in a little Bud Light talk, a passionate breakdown of being a Commanders fan, and some last-minute March Madness bets, and you’ve got a full-blown classic Bussin' episode on your hands.
