Dive into Friends Like Us as host Marina Franklin talks with veteran comedians Ralph Harris, Keith Robinson, and Charles Walden. They share stories, laughs, and insights on what keeps them thriving in the industry.  Keith Robinson: Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Keith Robinson, is considered a comic's comic. He has captivated audiences around the world with his straightforward humor. He was a regular on Comedy Central's Tough Crowd; and the co-host of The Wanda Sykes Show (Fox), His first hour special; 2014's Kevin Hart Presents: Back of the Bus Funny can still be streamed on Amazon Prime, Peacock and Tubi. Keith has been featured in films such as Trainwreck and King of Staten Island. After two strokes, and an extended hospital stay, during COVID, Keith marched right back to the stage to create his latest and most personal work yet, Different Strokes; his second hour special, picked up and to be released in 2024 by Netflix. Keith is currently working on several projects, including, feature films, television and tours. Charles Walden: Celebrity standup comedian and actor Charles Walden has been doing what he loves for over 30 years and that's entertaining his audience. Stricken by Cerebral Palsy from birth Charles doesn't allow his condition to limit or stop him from living his best life. Between gigs Charles has been employed by the State of Philadelphia for over fifteen (15) years. He enjoys traveling the world making people laugh.  Charles Walden was raised in the rough and tough inner city of Philadelphia and had to struggle and survive like any other kid in the inner city. He got No breaks just because he had Cerebral Palsy. He was not babied at all by family, friends, or the community. He had to put his pants on one leg at a time like every other boy or man. He had to overcome many obstacles. There was a lot of mental and physical pain he endured from living and growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia. The death of his mother crushed him, but he kept going. She was his rock. Many years have passed since her death and the pain never goes away but he keeps going. Charles' greatest pleasure is when he's on stage performing as he gives his audiences the most inspirational laughing good time they've had in a long while.  Charles Walden is not embarrassed or ashamed of his Cerebral Palsy and has incorporated his condition in a unique way into his standup comedy show.  Charles is proud to say stand up comedy has giving him the opportunity to perform on some iconic TV shows and stages such as BETs Comic View, Martin Lawrence 1st Amendment and even Def Comedy Jam's All-Star Season, to name a few.  Charles is a requested favorite to perform at  colleges, universities, comedy clubs, churches and military bases across the Country. Ralph Harris - From humble beginnings in North Philadelphia to the bright lights of Hollywood, Ralph Harris has been living the dream as a successful comedian and actor, in a career that spans over thirty-five years, and remains in full swing. Labeled by his peers as one of today's legendary comedic talents, with a resume that includes notable acting experience. Harris also served as host of the Culinary Competition, My Momma Throws Down on the TVOne network. He also made his feature film debut in the Golden Globe hit DREAMGIRLS, starring one of his comedy idols Eddie Murphy, Beyonce´, Jamie Foxx and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Harris kicks off the movie as the Detroit MC that helps Jamie hook up with the Dreamettes. Not one to slow down, Harris continued his film career momentum, immediately landing his second feature role in the film Evan Almighty starring Steve Carell and Wanda Sykes. Harris' jump to the big screen comes after years of successful television work, including appearances on Seinfeld, The Parent ‘Hood, Nick Freno, Living Single and In Living Color. No stranger to late night TV, Harris has been featured on The Tonight Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and Arsenio. Harris, is best known for his starring role in the ABC sitcom On Our Own which aired during the immensely popular TGIF block on Friday nights, the show has also aired in syndication on TVOne. You can catch Harris on TV and the Web, in either of his previously recorded specials – Comedy Central Presents and the widely popular HBO Comedy Half-Hour, also on all major streaming music platforms, on his previously recorded album titled HICKEY HEAD. When he's not filming, Harris continues to tour the world and the sea, literally! Performing to sold-out audiences as a comedian, his first career and love. Harris' comedy is character driven, a throwback to many of the greats including his other comedy idols Pryor, Cosby, Redd Foxx, Jonathan Winters and the list goes on. Born and raised in Philadelphia… Ralph spends what little time he's not on the road performing, at home in Los Angeles. Always hosted by Marina Franklin - One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female ( Amazon Prime, CW Network), TBS's The Last O.G, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Hysterical on FX, The Movie Trainwreck, Louie Season V, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, HBO's Crashing, and The Breaks with Michelle Wolf. We discuss the entire saga; from Ivan Reitman's classic original, the Real Ghostbusters cartoon that refined the series as entertainment for kids, the disappointing 1989 sequel, the 2016 all-female reboot that became a flashpoint for culture warriors online, and the recent legacy sequels guided by Jason Reitman, which have recast this saga as some form of modern American myth about a family legacy instead of just being high-concept comedies about New York schlubs who become entrepreneurs (aka the winning formula for success) We praise the Bobby Brown theme for Ghostbusters II, commend Dan Aykroyd for his fully-committed performance in the latest film (a stark contrast to Bill Murray's clear disinterest in his continuing involvement), and dig into how these new films meant for “the true fans” of the series continually get wrong what the actual legacy of these films is, as Columbia Pictures continues to struggle to make a real cinematic universe out of this IP, forever hoping lightning will strike twice. It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom this week with her review of Single Carrot Theatre's production of Every Brilliant Thing, a solo show being performed outdoors in multiple neighborhood venues with a rotating cast of three SCT actors. Co-written in 2016 by British playwright Duncan MacMillan with Irish actor Jonny Donahoe, Every Brilliant Thing explores the lengths to which we'll go for those we love. Within the play's life-affirming and joyful storyline, audiences are asked to help tell a moving story of a young child's hopefulness and resilience, despite contending with an emotionally unstable mother. Co-directed by SCT's Paul Diem and ensemble co-founder and artistic director Genevieve De Mahy, the play features rotating performances by SCT ensemble members Matthew Shea, Lauren Erica Jackson and Meghan Stanton. SCT's fifteen performances of Every Brilliant Thing run through September 26th, during Suicide Prevention Month. To spotlight the issue and provide resources for those seeking assistance, SCT has partnered with three mental-health support organizations: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, On Our Own of Maryland and B'more Clubhouse. Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett, the respective creator-showrunner and star of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” have plenty of insights into maximizing creativity and trust on set. “You gotta have an environment in which the ‘captain’ has created a level of safety, a level for you to fail big,” says Jurnee. “We’re going towards the same goal, which is the truth of this character,” adds Misha. “And we’re both fearless in that.” Before “Lovecraft Country,” the supernatural horror drama adapted from novelist Matt Ruff’s riff on H. P. Lovecraft, Misha and Jurnee worked together on the hit WGN thriller “Underground.” As a writer-director-producer, Misha is also the creative force behind “Helix” and the upcoming “Cleopatra Jones” and “Tomb Raider 2.” For more insight into her craft, check out Misha’s Meet the Maker feature: https://bit.ly/3hSEXiE Jurnee began her career as a child actor, on “On Our Own” and “Full House,” then broke out in “Eve’s Bayou,” “The Great Debaters,” “Friday Night Lights,” and last year’s “Birds of Prey.” For her work as Leti on “Lovecraft Country,” Jurnee earned a Critics Choice Super Award and an ensemble SAG Award nomination. The Toronto Blue Jays just keep on rolling. They've won 15 of their last 22 games, powered by a resurgent offense and a bullpen that is just barely chugging along. Mark, Bryson and Jacob unpack Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s three-game home run streak, Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s six-hit series and Marcus Semien's turnaround season. We also discuss the bullpen: Are we reaching the point where it implodes? How much longer can the relievers survive? Lastly, the crew discusses playing games in Dunedin and whether the Blue Jays should play a yearly exhibition game in Buffalo to commemorate their former home. Today’s Patreon-fueled shout-out is for me to say… "Early voting is underway for all registered voters. Vote in-person or request a ballot by mail. Register to vote by October 13. Visit elections.virginia.gov/registration/voter-forms"The Virginia Department of Health reports another 509 cases this morning, and the seven-day average for positive tests is at 4.8 percent. In the Blue Ridge Health District (soon to be formerly known by a different name) there are another nine new cases. Both counts are down sharply from recent trends. The state count is below the seven-day average of 774 new cases a day. Albemarle’s seven-day average for new cases is 12 a day, and Charlottesville’s number is 20. The statewide seven-day average for positive tests is at 4.8 percent. The Blue Ridge Health District is at 5.7 percent today, an increase over 4.3 percent last Wednesday. The UVA COVID-19 tracker lists 224 active cases as of Monday, with 200 of them students. Twenty-two percent of quarantine rooms were in use, as were eight percent of isolation rooms. *The Building Goodness Foundation has unveiled the first recipients of work that will come from their new C’Ville Builds Initiative. Jack Horn of the firm Martin Horn is the president of the Board of Directors. “C’Ville Builds Supports construction repair and restoration areas in the Charlottesville area, specifically for nonprofit organizations that are working towards racial equity, low-income homeowners and small businesses that are struggling as a result.”In the first phase, five projects are set to begin soon thanks to the funds that have been raised so far. They include work to create a outdoor patio at Pearl Island in the Jefferson School Center, Culinary Concepts AB, St. John’s Family Life and Fitness Center, outdoor meeting space for On Our Own, and work at a private homeowner in Esmont. Horn said this is an extension of the foundation’s original mission.  “The Building Goodness Foundation was founded in 1999 on the simple idea [that] when individuals join together and each of us brings our unique talents, skills, and passions, we can effectively build equitable communities for all people,” Horn said. Horn added that the pandemic as well as systemic racism has made the Foundation’s mission more important than ever and has focused them to look within the community. They have paused most of their international building projects. Sober Pierre is the owner of Pearl Island, a Caribbean-inspired food establishment. He said the pandemic hit his business hard. The Cville Builds project will create more shelving inside and a place for people outside. “For the shelving, it’s really just a way to create space, more storage space, be more organized and work more efficiently,” Pierre said. “For the outdoor patio, it’s an opportunity to in addition to the delicious food we are creating, to give them a nice space outside both for existing customers and new ones. As a small business in Charlottesville, our mission is to reach the community.” In all, the group is seeking to raise $300,000 to raise to complete 25 projects. Learn more on their website. *Albemarle County has opened up a second round of support grants for local nonprofits. The Lift Grant offers an opportunity for qualifying nonprofits to apply for up to $50,000 towards lost revenues. The funding comes from the county’s CARES Act allocation. To apply, would-be recipients must fill out an inquiry form by October 19. “Applications will be considered based on the extent of COVID-19’s impact to the organization and by how the grant funds would be used to serve Albemarle County residents,” reads a news release for the grant. *The Community Investment Collaborative has been working with Albemarle County to help sift through applications for various economic development grants. Stephen Davis is CIC’s executive director.“It’s been an interesting and challenging year for business owners, just like for the broader community with the pandemic and even if the business hasn’t been affected financially, it’s still that stress of running a business during all of this is incredibly challenging so we’ve been doing our best to adapt and to respond to business owner needs and partner with a lot of others in the community to help address some of those needs,” Davis.Davis made his comments during an interview with Mary Davis Hamlin as part of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence’s Hope and Resilience series. The full audio will be posted later today in the next installment of the Charlottesville Quarantine Report and on the CNE website. *Today in meetings, the Albemarle Board of Supervisors has a doozy. They will vote on the Climate Action Plan, hear a report on how to increase the amount of housing in the county, get updates on transportation projects, and will hear a rezoning for the Albemarle Business Campus. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. and is live-streamed. Let me know if you have any questions. (agenda) If you’re interested in more on climate issues, I wrote up the Supervisor’s last discussion in June. Can lightning strike in the same place twice? We'll let you decide. But first, we have a quick game of name that tune or as Ken knows it, continued reminders that he might have been adopted. Answers to the name that tune will appear at the bottom of the show notes after a spoiler disclaimer. Kenny confesses that he just doesn't care for R&B. Bradley isn't opposed. Justin and Mark are definitely fans. Bradley is hosting this round-robin episode and we start out talking about our first exposure to Batman. The 1960s classic starring Adam West. Keith Robinson is the quintessential comedian’s comedian, admired by his fellow artists – his great art of inherently subverting his audience, shaking them out of their cozy assumptions to fresh perspectives sustains his comedic prominence. His commanding stage presence has gained him appearances on MTV, VH1, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, TBS’s family comedy series Are We There Yet, The Chelsea Lately Show on E! and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. In his teens, Keith began cultivating his wit with his "back of the bus funny," subsequently working the comedy circuit in his hometown Philadelphia and securing a spot as one of the finalists on Ed McMahon’s Star Search. He did not take home the $100,000 prize, but his career as a comic and actor mushroomed. He now merits a coveted comedic and acting career on the stage, screen, and television. Keith’s impressive record of accomplishments include his self-titled special on Comedy Central, a standout regular on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, writer and central performer on The Wanda Sykes Show and writer for the Chappelle Show. He was seen in Kevin Hart's record-breaking movie, "Laugh at My Pain.” Most recently he can be seen in Judd Apatow’s movie “The King of Staten Island.” One of New York Comedy Cellar’s elite, where he frequently hosts, Keith Robinson has a reputation, best described by Cringe Humor for "being the best at impromptu zingers and one-liners that annihilate his colleagues." His first hour special, recorded live in New York at The Gramercy Theater: Kevin Hart presents Keith Robinson in Back of the Bus Funny, is now released on iTunes, Hulu, Amazon, and Google Play. Zainab Johnson, a stand-up comedian, actress, and writer is quickly being propelled as one of the most unique and engaging performers on stage and screen.  Zainab was named one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics To Watch in 2019, she hosted one of the host for Netflix's new show "100 Humans", she can be seen as a series regular on the new upcoming series from Greg Daniels a half hour comedy titled “Upload” an Amazon original series premiering May 1st, and she made her first late night stand up appearance on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers.  Zainab had a breakout appearance on HBO’s All Def Comedy (2017) and has made appearances on NBC’s Last Comic Standing (2014), Arsenio (2014), BET’s Comic View (2014), AXSTV’s Gotham Comedy Live! and just recently starred in a new web series titled Avant-Guardians.  She is a regular at the Improv Comedy Club in LA and the Comedy Cellar in NY.  Zainab has performed in the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival as one of the 2014 New Faces of Comedy and returned numerous times since.  She also had a breakout performance at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2018. Ralph Harris is one of today’s hottest comedic and acting talents! He made his feature film debut in "Dreamgirls," a film that has struck gold (of the Golden Globe variety). Ralph’s jump to the big screen comes after years of successful television work, including appearances on "Seinfeld," "Parenthood," "Nick Freno," "Living Single" and "In Living Color." No stranger to late night, Ralph has been featured on "The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O’Brien." However Ralph is probably best known for his starring role in the ABC-TV sitcom “On Our Own,” which aired during the immensely popular TGIF block on Friday nights, and which currently airs in syndication on TV One. You can also catch Ralph on TV in airings of his two previously recorded Cable TV specials – "Comedy Central Presents" and the "HBO Half-Hour Comedy Special." He also served as the Host of the Culinary Competition, “My Momma Throws Down” on the TVOne network. When he’s not filming, Ralph continues to tour the country and perform to sold-out audiences as a stand-up comedian, his first career and love. Always hosted by Marina Franklin - One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female ( Amazon Prime, CW Network), Trainwreck, Louie Season V, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, HBO's Crashing, and The Breaks with Michelle Wolf

It's time for the first Strong Songs listener Q&A of 2020, so let's get into it! Kirk answers listener questions on topics like Zeppelin and Cake counting, the decline (and rise) of the saxophone, Muse's approach to vocal processing, whether piano is an "easy" instrument, Bruno Mars's musical magpieism, and in a first, a listener's request that Strong Songs help him solve a mystery. Update 2/25/20: Mystery solved! Fabian's mystery song is "Me, Myself, I" by Joan Armatrading. Thanks to everyone who wrote in with the answer, and thanks as well to Fabian, who did a pretty great job re-creating it from memory. The video for Bobby Brown’s “On Our Own” is a textbook case of how music videos from films sometimes use the slimmest of connections in order to sell a movie. Watching the video, it seems like the director shot two different ideas for the song — one for the song before it was attached to the film, and the other afterward — and then stitched them together as best he could.
