Amanda Taylor drops by to discuss her campaign to represent District 103 in the Missouri House of Representatives. The House currently has a Republican "super-majority," so Amanda, running as a Democrat, has her work cut out for her. We discuss her main campaign issues, what she hopes to accomplish as a state legislator, and the current state of politics in Missouri and the rest of the nation. The day's issues may seem epic and impossible, but we break them down over this hour-long podcast, providing interesting discussion sprinkled with a bit of humor. What happens when the things we hold dear start to crumble? Join us as our first storyteller faces a heartbreaking choice: let go of her family legacy or fight for a piece of the past while making a discovery about nonperminance in herself. And facing loss isn’t just about places, our next storyteller defies death itself, a therapist grapples with a hidden truth while our final storyteller navigates an unlikely love friendship running out on the trails. In this episode of the Tell Us Something podcast, four storytellers share their true personal story on the theme “Close to the Edge”. Our stories today were recorded live in person in front of a packed house on March 26, 2024, at The George and Jane Dennison Theatre. Our first storyteller is Kathleen Kennedy. Kathleen's cherished family cabin, a symbol of precious memories, faces the relentless grip of time and erosion. A cancer diagnosis adds another layer of urgency, forcing a confrontation with impermanence. We call her story “Lessons in Letting Go”. Kathleen Kennedy grew up in Oakland, CA, and is a science teacher at Big Sky High School, with 24 years teaching experience. She has won a variety of prestigious teaching awards. She won the EcoDaredevil award in 2009, and in 2011 she was a Fulbright Japan-US Teacher in the Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development. She was an Adult Participant in American Youth Leadership Program’s Trip to Thailand in 2015 and continues to be passionate about her students and teaching. When she’s not busy saving the world and working towards a sustainable future, you might find her enjoying the beauty Missoula has to offer, rocking out to Pearl Jam, or dancing along to her favorite Dave Matthews song. In our next story, Susan Waters' peaceful bike ride takes a horrifying turn. A brutal crash leaves her fighting for life. A mysterious voice asks a question her answer and the resulting outcomes will leave you breathless in a story Susan calls “Fade to White”. While growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, Susan Waters longed for the days her family would camp and hike in the mountains and swoosh down the slopes of Colorado. She played keyboards in a rock band, worked her way through university as a metal sculptor, then spent 15 years as a film and video writer, producer and director. In 1997, Susan chucked a successful career and beautiful home, packed her two dogs, two cats, and all her worldly belongings into a U-Haul and followed the call of the mountains to Missoula, Montana, where she knew not a soul and had nowhere to live. She quickly settled in and started Northern Lights Communications, where she continues to write, produce and consult. Inspired by the alternative health modalities that helped her heal from a near fatal accident, Susan formally studied, trained, then started Water Wellness, where she is a holistic bodyworker and Reiki Master, individual wellness coach, and group instructor. Susan volunteers in the community and takes full advantage of the outdoors with her human and animal tribe, explores the arts, and thrives in the wonderfully progressive and laid-back vibe of Missoula. Learn more at SusanWatersWellness.com. In our next story, Annabelle Winnie, a successful therapist and mother, grapples with a lifelong sense of dissonance. Despite outward competence, she’s navigated years of therapy, seeking answers for a struggle she couldn’t quite grasp. Annabelle calls her story “Belonging.” Or…”Another Way to See.” Or “Another Way to Be.” Annabelle Winnie has lived in Missoula since 2011. You might find her walking or biking around town, acting as chauffeur for one of her 2 kids, or taming the wild raspberry patch in her backyard. Rounding out this episode of the Tell Us Something podcast is Amanda Taylor, who learns that the path to love isn’t always smooth, and Amanda and Heather learn that the most powerful relationships can exist outside the box. Amanda calls her story “Heather”. Thanks, Amanda. Amanda Taylor is a lover of laughter and of love. After sharing a story at Tell Us Something one year ago, she finally followed her dream of trying stand-up comedy. Now she is a local stand-up comedian, even though she feels like an imposter saying that. Amanda is on a lifelong journey of living in alignment with herself and is forever grateful to each person who has loved and continues to love her along the way.
Imagine stepping out to your mailbox one morning, only to discover an envelope addressed to you from a notorious serial killer who has been locked away since the 80s. Inside the envelope, you're relieved not to find any grisly mementos; but instead find a birthday card for your infant child along with a handwritten message complimenting you on your beautiful family. Some might argue that such a message would be just as horrifying as receiving a severed finger or lock of hair. Either way, for most people, receiving anything in the mail from a serial killer would be abnormal. A little late but here they are! Amanda & Taylor's ins & outs for 2024, esthetician edition!
säje, the vocal group made up of singers Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage won their first Grammy on Sunday for their arrangement of “In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning”. They recorded it with one of the most admired musical minds today, Jacob Collier. And like much of what has happened with so far, that recording was both unintended and totally right, somewhere between the reward for the hard work of talented artists, and magic. The story plays like a dream. One day Jacob Collier stopped by the LA recording studio (Lucy's Meat Market), where was working on their debut album. One thing led to another and he ended up playing a few free form takes of “In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning.” There's footage of it online and you can see him improvising his arrangement. You can also see his childlike enthusiasm, his playful energy, his request to do just one more take, because he was having so much fun. After Jacob left, the singers in säje built their vocal arrangement around what he had played. It's a beautiful marriage of improvisation and arrangement, and the result ends up sounding completely inevitable. They contextualized Collier's spontaneous approach, brought it fully into their world, built a frame for his impressionistic gestures, and then filled in the landscape. This was not their first experience with serendipity. Before was , back when it was just an idea floated by Sara Gazarek in 2018 to put some kind of vocal group together, the four women gathered at a rental house in Palm Springs, California to get to know one another and discuss the possibility of doing something together. They came out of that weekend with a song “Desert Song”, a sound, and the makings of a story. The members of don't live in the same place (Sara and Erin live in Los Angeles, Johnaye and Amanda live in Seattle), but they started to work as a group, and eventually recorded “Desert Song”. They submitted the song to the Grammy's - their first song! - and it was nominated in 2020. Eventually released their debut album in 2023. It featured guest appearances by Ambrose Akinmusire, Michael Mayo, Terri Lynn Carrington, and of course Jacob Collier, among others. But at the core of the album was the signature silky sound which is a little hard to define, but very easy to identify. It's technically challenging to execute - suspended chords and interweaving lines - and very satisfying to experience. They like to say that they ascend beyond their training, and into artistry. We met at a photo studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn late last year and had a beautiful talk about their formation, their journey - from that first weekend retreat in Palm Springs to the release of their first full length album and its subsequent Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement Instruments and Vocals with Jacob Collier for “In The Wee Small Hour of the Morning”, collective lyric writing, managing logistics and juggling four schedules, the emotional space that feminine energy allows, and discovering who they are in public. www.third-story.comwww.substack.leosidran.com

Co-Authors, Counselor Mandy and Chris Saade, are thrilled to announce the launch of their new book “Tears are the Source of Your Passion: The Power of Authenticity and Grief.” Season 4 of Finding Hope is meant to serve as a companion to the book by offering episodes that focus on the book's content, bringing it to life with engaging conversations and stories from people who have used the 7-steps as a guide in their grief journey. You can order the book on Amazon at: https://amzn.to/3sb5FGB. Section Two of the book covers the “7 Steps Toward the Power of Grief and Hope,” a heart-centered, self-coaching model designed to support individuals through the creativity of the journey of grief. In this episode I am discussing Step 3: Initiation with entrepreneur/writer and mother Amanda Taylor. After tragically losing her high school sweetheart and military pilot husband, Neal, in 2012, Amanda found herself suddenly raising their four beautiful girls alone. Speaking about Step 3 she says “Initiation was the threshold from who I WAS, to who I was now going to be. I can look back, after 10 years have passed, and am proud of where I am today.” When talking about Step 3 both Mandy and Amanda concur that we don't get Initiated to “learn lessons” – but instead they are life events that allow us to transform into more of our authentic selves. Amanda Taylor is an entrepreneur, writer, and yoga teacher, and the mother of, now five, amazing daughters. She believes that her grief transformed her and uncovered her life's calling. Amanda has traveled the world with her daughters, and blogs about their adventures at mommyadventurer.com. She also writes both fiction and non-fiction books and articles. Amanda has undergraduate degrees in both English and psychological neuroscience, and a master's degree in creative non-fiction writing. She is also a certified yoga teacher and loves teaching deep stretch and restorative yoga. Amanda recently enrolled in the Clemson New Farmer's program, and she has a vision for transforming backyards into food gardens all over the state. In S2:Episode1 - Carla looks into the harrowing account of Virginia native Amanda Taylor- dubbed The Selfie Killer. As she struggled to process the suicide of her husband Rex, her grief quickly became poisoned and twisted into bitter vengeance... With her father-in-law firmly in her sights as the one responsible for the death of her partner- and the one who should suffer. All the more perverse is the open satisfaction she took in her eventual crimes, broadcasting her proud acts across social media, and speaking remorselessly about her motivations in interviews that followed. Phil continues his keeness to bring you some of the biggest homicide cases in a particular country's history- this time looking towards Pakistan and the heinous actions of child killer/molester Javed Iqbal. The blend of his mother's death and a grievance with Lahore Police were very much the twisted driving force behind his countless murders, in little over the space of a year. His choice of victim was troubling too, seemingly focusing on vulnerable runaway boys from 6 to 16, and subjecting them to further unimaginable horrors. #theunspeakableisspoken

In Nancy Gong's installation for RIT's Innovation Center, titled, In Art, Science and Life, What is the Question?, a wide range of complex topics are referenced, ranging from RIT's nine colleges to everything from the binary system to the black hole. A grand representative of her body of work in glass, the commission was heavily inspired by the marriage of science, technology and art. An accomplished glass artist with world-wide recognition in contemporary architectural glass art, Gong's focus is on large and small commissioned work including installations, fine art designs, sculpture, donor walls, gifts and awards. Her designs embrace traditional techniques of stained glass craftsmen and stone carvers, combined with new materials, fusing, laminating and other new and emerging technologies. Developing skills in laminating and fusing glass has allowed Gong to display her colored glass art outdoors. Fused glass techniques enabled the artist to create impressionistic designs with soft edges, moving her art more towards abstraction. Having mastered her own style of creating texture and painting, Gong depicts various levels of contrast using striking color, motion and spontaneity. As the ever-changing light plays against her integrated design elements, a unique living, breathing work of art is created, beckoning the viewer to see and experience something new and fresh with every passing look. American born of Chinese descent, her free-flowing modern designs echo the spirit, energy and beauty of all living things. Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder and Phillip Stark to name a few, Gong studied at the Naples Mills School of Arts and Crafts, the Allofus Art Workshop, SUNY Empire State College, Corning Museum of Glass, the prestigious School of American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology, Narcissus Quagliata design workshop, Norm Dobbins stained glass workshops, the famed Orsoni Smalti Veneziani in Italy, the Glass Art Society, and the American Glass Guild. She continues to hone her skills in workshops instructed by contemporary masters such as Quagliata, Kenneth von Roenn Jr., Martin Rosol, Tim Carey, Kathy Jordan, Deborah Coombs, Amanda Taylor and others. As owner/principal designer of Gong Glass Works since 1979, Gong designs and fabricates commissioned architectural and fine art glass projects for residential, commercial, institutional and public clients. Her commercial and public clients include The Akron Civic Theater, The City of Rochester, ARTWalk of Rochester Inc., Beckoning Path, Corning Tropel, Duke University, LiDestri Foods, Rochester Museum and Science Center, State of Vermont, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, and Virgin Travel/Vacations. Her sculptures and fine art glass designs are acquired for private collections throughout the world, and are often presented as special gifts. For her achievements in the world of glass art, Gong has been recognized by PBS – WXXI Arts in Focus, Who's Who in Contemporary Glass Art, The World's Who's Who of Women, and 2,000 Notable American Women. She and her works have been profiled in over 20 professional publications, including: Interiors & Sources, China Daily News, The Design Journal of Korea, Stained Glass Quarterly, Professional Stained Glass Magazine, Builder/Architect Magazine, AmericanStyle Magazine, Beautiful Glass Magazine, Glass Now, ARTform, SOFA Chicago, and Guild Sourcebook of Architectural & Interior Art and Architects + Artisans. Professional memberships include the Glass Art Society, the Stained Glass Association of America, the American Glass Guild, AIA Rochester and New York, and the Society of American Mosaic Artists Gong states: “My focus is to design artwork that speaks to the ages. If it's good design, it will endure. My main goal is for artwork to bring peace and joy to the spaces through an experience. I want to feed the souls of people who are utilizing the space.”

Amanda is a social work academic in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, at Queen's University Belfast. She is interested in the intersection of social work and digital technologies and is particularly well known for development of creative teaching methodologies, and experiential approaches in social work education. One of these methods is Social Work Book Group - a synchronous and asynchronous teaching method, that uses fiction to explore the human condition. @SWBookGroup (https://wke.lt/w/s/yhxNQ) began with just three students in UCLan library. and now has a following of over 6,500 thousand. Social Work Virtual Pal is another of Dr Taylor-Beswick's innovations - where she and a colleague in America have essentially digitized the original 'Pen pal' method. You can find out more about it on the Social Work Virtual Pal website or on the @SWVirtualPalTwitter feed. Dr Taylor-Beswick has recently advised on the BASW/SCIE Digital Capabilities for Social Work Project 2020 in England and has a few EdTech awards to her name: JISC50 2016; UK GOV Women Tech Leader 2018; EdTech50 2020.
