Getting people to visit your website is one thing, but convincing them to take the next step and actually buy something is a whole different challenge. Sometimes the problem isn't traffic—it's clarity, trust, or making the decision easy for them. If visitors are leaving without buying, it could be because they're confused, unconvinced, or unsure of what to do next. The key is making their experience as smooth and compelling as possible so that clicking “buy” feels like the obvious choice. The title of this episode says it all. Episode 8 of Omaha REIA Radio is proud to feature Satyam Mistry as he speaks about his experience in Real Estate where he had to quickly learn about hotel management after being tasked with running a hotel investment. This ultimately brought him to Omaha where he dabbled in the investment space at first purchasing 4 rental properties but quickly realized that he wanted more. After selling the hotel in 2019, he quickly scaled his investment company from 4 to 13 doors in his first year doing it full time... Mind you, he self manages all his properties all while running a very successful e-commerce website. Recently he's decided to expand his horizon to the multifamily space in his continued pursuit of growth and development (pun intended). We won't give away anymore about the interview but know that Satyam has given more golden nuggets in this episode than Owen or Ted could fit in their pockets. Okay, e-commerce website owners, it's your turn to discover how to better protect your business. In the last episode, I discussed how to protect your website. I talked about the three most common policies you'll find on most websites: website terms, a privacy policy, and a disclaimer. If you have a website with an e-commerce component attached to it, you'll need those policies and more (which can also depend on the type of business you have). In today's episode, I talk a bit more about the specifics for protecting your e-commerce business website with your policies. I dive quickly into the revisions to any existing policies needed. In addition, I go into another policy for purchases and break it down into the different types of purchases to cover. These product areas include even more policy and term considerations to help protect yourself. You'll hear about shipping for physical products (and questions to ask yourself); refunds, returns, and cancellations for non-physical products; providing community or support for courses and memberships; and protecting your intellectual property rights. Please subscribe if you haven't already. And if you like the show, I'd love it if you'd give it a review wherever you listen to podcasts! In this episode: [02:16] - E-commerce website owners may want to include these updates in their website terms and privacy policy. [02:39] - Danielle discusses what she calls “purchase policies.” These can assist with some of the most common customer service inquiries. [03:20] - Breaking it down by product type, Danielle starts with websites selling physical products. [04:34] - Make sure to include any special shipping policies and discuss these two big reasons for customer complaints. [04:59] - Danielle reviews eight questions to consider as you build this part of your policy. [06:42] - Tip: be flexible when things fall outside of your stated policies. Danielle gives a recent example of why. [07:16] - Next up, Danielle discusses websites selling digital products like ebooks and templates. [07:48] - What do you include in a purchase policy for digital product websites? [08:56] - Protecting your intellectual property is extremely important for digital products. [10:06] - Courses are similar to digital products, but sometimes they have different terms you want to emphasize. [11:05] - Set clear terms for your course money-back guarantee. Is it conditional or good at any time for any reason? [13:13] - If you include any community or support with your course, you'll need to include these kinds of terms regarding participation. [13:46] - Lastly, Danielle covers membership sites and the three major areas to consider. [15:00] - What about when someone wants to cancel their membership? Get clear on the way you'll handle them on your site. [16:26] - Have rules in place to deal with potential bad behavior and conflicts among community members. [17:21] - To wrap up, Danielle gives you action steps to take for this episode. Links & Resources: Businessese Businessese on Facebook Businessese on Instagram Liss Legal Liss Legal on Instagram
Host: Jeremy Cherny interviews Lori McDonald, President and CEO of Brilliance Business Solutions “I started my career at NASA Johnson Space Center as a flight controller for the space shuttle program where I met my husband. He went on to work for Rockwell Automation and got a promotion that brought us to Milwaukee. I was trying to figure out what was as cool as space and decided the internet looked like a cool place to be. So I started Brilliance Business Solutions, a web development company with a niche in helping manufacturers and distributors implement digital commerce solutions, in 1998. Just this year we made the Inc. 5000 list.” Why is security so important and how does that show up in your business? We help companies to sell products online. So the solutions we build have to be secure. For customers to choose to work with us, they have to have confidence that we're helping them to build secure solutions. We have to give good advice to customers about how they go about the process of doing that, and by providing secure digital solutions, our clients give their end customers the confidence to do business with them online. So for us, it's really just a necessity in the work we do out. How do you guys stay on top of all the latest security threats? It is something that you constantly have to work to stay on top of. So in terms of e-commerce security, one aspect is something called PCI compliance, or the payment card industry. They have a set of standards that you have to meet in order to be able to accept credit cards. It has a series of steps that you have to take in terms of scanning sites, ensuring that your sites are meeting and passing those scans. Those processes end up being very educational. The reality is the threats are constantly changing, and you have to stay on top of aligning yourselves with other vendors in the market-software platforms that are actively working to keep their platforms secure and minimize the vulnerabilities that may exist. So training on what those platforms are doing. We are also clients of Gartner research. So we attend events that talk about best practices with respect to what's happening in digital commerce and security. What is something people can do to protect their websites from being attacked? One of the things that you want to ensure that you're doing is to stay on the latest version of whatever software you're running and to ensure you're applying any patches that may be available from a security perspective. A lot of companies we work with don't always stay on the latest version, it might not be feasible. But to be aware of how long it's been since your last upgrade, and what vulnerabilities exist in the application to be keeping a really close eye on that - it will depend on what platform you're on - but that's one of the most likely ways that people get hacked. Just ensuring that attention is being paid is a huge thing. When you allow your platform to be out of date, especially if it's no longer supported, that's where you can really get into trouble. What do you see as the future of information security, especially for e-commerce websites? Personal data privacy is growing in importance. I've been talking a lot about credit card data, but personal data is extremely important. We work with a fair amount of customers who are doing business globally. GDPR is something that comes up which stands for general data protection regulation. It's a European standard that is required to meet for EU citizens, which we can have EU citizens in the US as well, and maintains rules around how we need to enable people to ask for what data that we have on file for them, ask people to be able to remove their data and give them choices about how their data is being used. California has its guideline around data privacy as well. And I think we're going to be seeing more rules, requirements and regulations around data privacy, especially, as we all gain awareness of how our data is being used.

We recently attended the 2019 NYS Tourism Conference in Buffalo, New York and interviewed presenters, conference attendees, and Tourism Excellence Award winners. My interviews focused on the conference themes of inclusion, fostering community engagement, and "tourism is everybody's business", as well as key takeaways from the conference. This episode focuses on some of the award winners, and I hope you find these conversations informative and inspiring. In this final episode of the series, I share my conversations with: Kelly Blazosky, President of Oneida County Tourism Patrick Kaler, President and CEO of Visit Buffalo Niagara Rebekah LaMoreaux, President and CEO of Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce and Ronald Roney, Director of Watkins Glen State Park What You Will Learn in This Episode: How seven different counties partnered for Oneida County Tourism’s “Bike Thru History” program, intended to highlight Revolutionary War destinations for visiting cyclists and to bring new cycling enthusiasts to the region How a character named the Unexpected Buffalo was featured in a wide-ranging marketing campaign across many forms of digital media, showcasing the numerous experiences and destinations on offer in Buffalo How a unique partnership between a state agency and a local chamber of commerce led to the construction of a brand new Welcome Center at Watkins Glen State Park, showcasing not only the park but the other events and destinations in the community Oneida County Tourism Kelly Blazosky from Oneida County Tourism discusses their award-winning "Bike Thru History" program, developed in partnership between Oneida County and six other counties. She shares how the program was developed as a way to engage biking enthusiasts and give them an opportunity to bicycle to important historical sites from the Revolutionary War throughout the region. Kelly explores how they engaged cycling professionals to help determine how to interconnect looping bike paths of varying challenge levels that would also connect with the historical sites. She shares how they developed thirty new routes for cyclists, using the Erie Canalway corridor as the main branch from which the paths would extend. She also discusses how they created a website to showcase the newly looping routes, and how they connected with a cycling route and GPS app to include the routes. Kelly explains how coordination between the various groups and assets and keeping clear communication were key to the program's success. She shares her pride in winning an Excellence Award and her gratitude toward all of the partners involved. Visit Buffalo Niagara Patrick Kaler from Visit Buffalo Niagara discusses their "Unexpected Buffalo" marketing campaign featuring the character of the same name and his journeys through the destinations and experiences available in Buffalo. He explains how the campaign was launched across 30-second TV spots, print ads, newspapers and magazines, transit advertising, and across social media. He discusses how the target markets for the campaign included Toronto, Rochester, Erie, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Patrick shares how the Unexpected Buffalo character is a fully-realized and interactive creation with his own social media presence. He also discusses how the Unexpected Buffalo campaign generated more than $108 million in its first year alone, for a return on investment of $84 for every $1 spent. He shares how the idea for the Unexpected Buffalo campaign was developed almost exclusively in-house and why taking risks and being bold were important to the success of the campaign. He discusses how being recognized by the state and peers is a great thing to take back to stakeholders. Watkins Glen State Park and Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce Ron Roney from Watkins Glen State Park discusses renovations to the park and the inclusion of a welcome center located at the main entrance of the park, done in collaboration with the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce, and he shares how it has made a major impact on the community. Rebekah LaMoreaux from the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce shares how the Chamber partnered with the Park as an opportunity to share with visitors the many other opportunities Watkins Glen has on offer. Ron shares how his biggest takeaway from the project was that the collaboration between a state agency such as the Park and the local tourism services can offer powerful benefits to both parties. Rebekah shares how she learned that promoting tourism is everyone in the community's job. Ron talks about the honor he felt at being recognized for their work, and he shares the pride he feels at contributing toward the positive impact the collaboration is making to the entire region. Rebekah shares her surprise and joy that the state agency gave the project their stamp of approval in the first year, and she discusses the potential of future partnerships. On this month’s episode of Get Away to Grafton, we prepare for a summer of outdoor food and drink with local experts. We’ll hear about the second ever Beer on the Bridge in Grafton, Grafton’s brand-new Traveling Food Truck Tour, and from the owners of local food truck, That Taco Guy. Let’s get started! To begin, beer connoisseur and Grafton cheerleader Paul Alexander returns to Get Away to Grafton to talk about the second annual Beer on the Bridge tasting event. Paul, owner of 024 taproom in the Grafton Arts Mill, has always felt that Grafton is a city full of beer-lovers with no beer events. Last year, Paul organized the first ever Beer on the Bridge which was an enormous success. This year, Beer on the Bridge will take place Saturday, June 8th. General admission begins at 1pm until the festival closes at 5pm (VIP attendees can enter at 12pm). Like the name of the event suggests, the event takes place on the Bridge St. Bridge, just north of the Grafton Arts Mill. Paul’s event will boast nearly 100 beers from 35 breweries, live music from the Maple Blues Road Band, and food trucks. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets in advance, you can visit the Chamber of Commerce Website, or pick them up in person at the 024 Taproom or the Bottle Shop of Grafton. General admission tickets cost $50 and designated drivers get in free, but if you’re feeling adventurous you can upgrade to a VIP ticket that allows early entrance to the event and access to a VIP area featuring three rare barrels to sample. All tickets include a 5oz sampling glass and unlimited sampling of all beers for the duration of the event. The inspiration for the event came from Grafton’s festival-friendly layout and the unique location of a waterfall-spanning bridge. Back again this year is Beer on the Bridge’s Homebrewing Competition! For a small fee, contestants can bring two samples of their homebrewed beer rated by local judges. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to brew their recipe in the Fermentorium’s brewing system! Next, Andrew Swafford of the Traveling Food Truck Series sits down with us to give us a sneak-peak of what to expect at Graton’s Traveling Food Truck Series. Nearly four years ago, Andrew began his food truck journey while organizing the Rockin’ Food Truck tour in Franklin. The event was so successful, the organizers approached the city of Oak Creek about organizing a similar event the following year. The support was outstanding, which lead to the concept of a traveling food truck tour that visits cities around south-east Wisconsin. Andrew says the tour has grown every year and will include an expanded tap-list for this years tour with unique taps and cans from local breweries. Live music, games, and activities for children will be featured in Grafton’s leg of the tour. You can follow the event at travelingfootrucktour.com, which will release a list of all the vendors closer to the event. The Traveling Food Truck Tour will stop at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Grafton on the following dates: June 25th, 2019 July 30th, 2019 August 27th, 2019 September 24th, 2019 Finally, Eli and Andrea Acosta join us to talk about the history of the “That Taco Guy” food truck, which will be featured during the Grafton Traveling Food Truck Tour. The venture began as a fun idea to stay busy during the weekend and make some extra money. The business was intended to be part-time gig based out of tents, but a great opportunity came up to purchase a food truck and it was full speed ahead. After the first event, it was clear that people loved the tacos. Eli and Andrea say they didn’t tell anyone the truck was opening or utilize any sort of advertising or promotion, which made the success so surprising. They attribute part of the truck’s success to the unique name, which was derived from the idea that hungry bar-goers wouldn’t remember the name of where they got food the night before, just that they got some delicious food from “that taco guy”. Eli runs us through some of his unique recipes and some of his favorite ingredients, including the popular candied jalapenos. Many of the recipes have traditional influence, as well as twists inspired by south-east Asian cuisine. If you want to try some of That Taco Guy’s delectable cuisine, visit their website at ThatTacoGuy.com or find them at the Grafton Traveling Food Truck Series on the last Tuesday of each month at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
