There's an exciting gig coming to Wellington this week – especially if your heydey was in the 70s. 10cc is returning to the capital on Friday night to play a gig at the Opera House, performing classic hits like The Things We Do For Love, Dreadlock Holiday and I'm Not In Love. 10cc was formed in 1972 - after frontman and songwriter Graham Gouldman had begun his career writing hits for The Hollies and Herman's Hermits. The band has had twelve songs reach the UK Top 40 - including three number-one hits. It wasn't a given that Deni Hines would pursue a career a music. Despite her mother, Marcia Hines, being one of the most recognisable pop stars in Australia, Deni had other interests and suffered from performance anxiety in her younger years. But her vocal talent soon got her snapped up as a backing singer for artists like Wa Wa Nee, Peter Blakeley and Kylie Minogue. It was her voice that also saw her hired as the latest frontperson for funk/dance band Rockmelons. In a frank and unflinching interview, Deni shares exactly what she thought of their collaboration and the hits that ensued. She also recalls guesting on "Not Enough Time" by INXS and what Michael Hutchence was like to work with in the studio. Then, after a solo deal in the US fell apart for reasons beyond her control, Deni landed at Mushroom Records and scored a top 5 hit with "It's Alright". She describes the process of putting together her debut album, Imagination, in London and follow-up singles like "I'm Not In Love" and "Delicious", a duet with Don-E that was added to the UK version of the album (retitled Pay Attention). Born on 10 May 1946 in Manchester, Graham was given his first guitar at the age of 11 and started playing with local bands at 15. He received early encouragement to develop his musical talent from his mother Betty and father Hymie, who also contributed with suggested lyrics and song titles. Graham played with various Manchester bands before forming The Mockingbirds in 1965 (with Kevin Godley on drums), and when the record label Columbia rejected Graham's first single composition for the band, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The song, For Your Love, became a huge hit for The Yardbirds. Working by day in a men's outfitters shop and playing by night with his semi-professional band, Graham went on to write a string of hits, such as Pamela, Pamela for Wayne Fontana, For Your Love, Evil Hearted You and Heart Full of Soul (The Yardbirds), Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window (The Hollies), No Milk Today and Listen People (Herman's Hermits), and Tallyman for Jeff Beck. In 1972, along with Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, he formed 10cc and enjoyed a string of Top 10 hits, including three No 1s – Rubber Bullets, I'm Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday – along with Donna (No 2), Art For Art's Sake and Good Morning Judge (both reaching No 5), The Things We Do For Love and I'm Mandy Fly Me (6), and The Wall Street Shuffle (10). It's the enduring popularity of these tracks, along with others such as Bridge To Your Heart from Graham's time in Wax with the late Andrew Gold and songs from film soundtracks including Animalympics, that led to the formation of Heart Full of Songs. Needless to say, the band also features tracks from Graham's acclaimed solo albums, And Another Thing, Love And Work, Play Nicely And Share and 2020's Modesty Forbids.

这期节目里，有三首“中国”歌曲。 Fatima Al Qadiri 出生在科威特，现居美国纽约，并没有到过中国。但是在2014年的专辑中，她尽可能地描绘了通过西方媒体了解到的“那个中国”。所以也并不奇怪我们在其中听到种种支离破碎的“中国元素”，前言不搭后语的“中文”。而她的那张专辑名字不叫“中国”，而叫 "Asiatitsch", 德语中的“亚洲”。封面的黄种人女孩身着红袍，自内至外透着微妙的错位。 这张专辑的开篇曲叫做 "Shanzhai". “山寨”，一种从电子行业的仿冒开始，最初被人诟病，但随着时间推移却慢慢地生长出独特原创性的行为。而 Fatima 的手法也很有趣，音乐录影带里，中国模特缓慢、专注地对口型表演着这首歌；客串人声的宠物同谋主唱冯海宁，貌似深情，实则空洞地翻唱 Sinead O'Connor 的 "Nothing Compares 2 U", 一首本身也是翻唱自 Prince 的名曲。 而新加坡的华人音乐人 Dick Lee（李迪文）的尝试，则带有强烈的“寻根”色彩。1992年的专辑 "Year of the Monkey" 之中，他用一首双拼单曲 "The Heart of the Motherland" 翻唱了《虹彩妹妹》和《达坂城的姑娘》两首在中国北方广为流传的民谣，但却搭配了当时最时尚的欧陆电子舞曲节拍。在这张专辑中，他还将菲律宾、马来西亚、日本等地的传统歌谣吸纳进创作，比对探讨他心中的 "Modern Asia". 至于结果，专辑的同名片尾曲其实很耐人寻味。 2021年初，shanghai qiutian 这支上海乐队带来了新专辑《家：革命》。发起这支乐队的两位音乐人，Eñaut 来自西班牙巴斯克地区，Florian 来自比利时（他们的中文名字分别叫王毅和鲁非言）。但是他们的创作，却甚至比很多本土音乐人都要接地气。从上海图书馆到崇明海岸，从 P.K.14 到 Carsick Cars, 他们坚持用有限的中文进行创作。虽然同样隔着这层语言的窗户纸，作为二代华人移民的 Dick Lee, 作为语言学习和表达者的 shanghai qiutian, 抱着解构角度运用中文的 Fatima 和 冯海宁，带来的是表面相似，实则十分不同的表达。 当然，在这期节目中，你依然可以欣赏到 Scott Walker 和 Chet Baker 强烈的“古典”美学，This Mortal Coil 的 4AD 经典，还有 Kelsey Lu 翻唱 10cc 的经典老歌 "I'm Not In Love".
