We've been very fortunate to make it this long without needing an overnight hospital stay for any of our kids . . . until this month. Baby had some super nasty croupy breathing and we were grateful to get him the care he needed. It took some firm conversations to follow my momma instinct to leave the hospital when we did and although not in need of breathing treatments, baby was still plenty sick and could have easily taken a turn for the worse. I did everything I could to support his recovery at home and thankfully he was down to just some lingering congestion within a couple of days. Please note I am NOT a medical professional, just a mom who hates having sick kids! I've been fascinated with finding everything I can do to mitigate sickness and here are some of my favorites! Most of us have grown up with the idea that milk does a body good and that animal protein is the best source of protein for our bodies and our brains. But a large body of research that doesn't get the media attention it deserves shows us that the opposite is true. That the saturated fat in animal foods is the primary driver of heart disease, and plant foods work to clear out the arteries and reverse it. Doug Richards is one of many who have discovered and experienced this boost to his health and I excited to share his experiences with you today.

More and more evidence is emerging on the link between our food choices and our mental health. While mental health is a complex multifaceted issue, many people are finding that the foundation of good nutrition is far more effective than medication and other approaches they have tried. Having struggled with major depressive episodes for more than a decade Danae Dayley and her family decided to try 10 days on a whole food plant-based diet. By day five she still loved meat, but knew she wasn't going back. She's doing great without antidepressants and enjoying a long list of other benefits as well. Most grocery store remedies provide temporary symptom relief but rarely do much to get at the root of the issue. I love discovering a variety of ways to get at the root of the problem, and herbal remedies are a great way to do that. When we start turning to other options, it can feel overwhelming to know who and what to trust, what's safe, effective and worth your time and money. I invited herbalist Jordan Gundersen to come on the podcast and teach us about where we can begin to use herbs as part of our healing journey both safely and effectively. Jordan compares using herbs for healing as similar to replacing whole plant foods for processed ones--when we use the herb we are getting the whole plant and all of its phytochemicals to work in concert rather than extracting a few chemicals as is often the case with both processed foods and pharmaceuticals. As always this is intended for informational purposes and is not intended to replace medical advice. As you'll hear, some herbs can react negatively with prescription drugs and so you would definitely want to work with a qualified medical professional to make adjustments in that area. But I hope this gives you a good overview and understanding of how we can learn about and start to experience the benefits of herbs. Perhaps my favorite benefit of eating plants is how they boost mental and emotional health. Today, we dig into the research to understand why that is, what you can do to increase your own sense of well-being. I do want to acknowledge that mental illness, depression and anxiety are complex and are the sum of many factors. Food choices are certainly not the only one, however, they are easily overlooked and have tremendous potential for bringing about lasting improvement. Show Notes: MyPlantStrongFamily.com/39

It was a fun day last year when my second grader came home from school to tell me about what had happened during lunch that day. He'd been eating red lentil nuggets (like chicken nuggets only made with lentils) for lunch that day and his teacher asked about them. He told her we eat mostly plants and she shared she was working on eating plant-based too. He was so excited to have a fellow plant-eater and that she wanted to know more about what he was doing. Kiana Benson was 25 when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Finding that the medication she was given to manage it made her very sick, she decided to see what she could do with diet and lifestyle.
