Bad Company hit the scene in 1974 in a big way. Signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label and managed by Peter Grant, the supergroup composed of Paul Rodgers (Free), Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople), Boz Burrell (King Crimson) and Simon Kirke (Free) had a huge success with their self-titled debut which would go on to sell 5 million in the US. Many bands struggle to follow up a big debut with an equally good second effort but Bad Company weren't rookies and had made over a dozen albums individually. The question was how would the songwriting partnership of Ralphs and Rodgers develop and would any of them as individuals emerge as the lead songwriter. While not many will tell you Straight Shooter is as good or better than the debut, it is a solid rock record. Chart hits Feel Like Makin' Love and Good Lovin' Gone Bad got them all over the airwaves and Rodgers Shooting Star would go onto become a classic rock radio staple. They even showed their tender side with Simon Kirke's Weep No More (accompanied by strings) and Anna. Heavy riffs from Deal With The Preacher and the innuendo of Wild Fire Woman help round the album into an album that showed Bad Company had staying power and could deliver the goods. Released March 28, 1975, it would go on to sell 3 million in the US. Do you think Bad Company deserves to be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? We do!!! For MCoBeauty CMO Meridith Rojas, the ability to democratize the beauty industry lies in the power of dupes. “We're in this moment, in this cultural zeitgeist, where people don't want to have to spend $1,000 on a face of beauty and don't want to be left out of the trends,” said Rojas. “We really want to create luxury for everyone. And of course, we have amazing dupes, but we also have some homegrown innovation. The combination has been really magnetic, and our community is growing in the U.S. so fast. We have a very exciting year ahead of us.” Dupes, the colloquial term for a lower-priced product inspired by a luxury category leader, makes up about half of MCo's offering. Unlike counterfeits or copies, which are often associated with unsafe formulas and flagrant IP violations, dupes are in their own category and are incredibly popular globally. MCoBeauty sells recognizable dupes for popular products from brands like Charlotte Tilbury, Drunk Elephant, Sol de Janeiro and Laneige for around a third of the price. For example, MCo Beauty's best-selling Flawless Glow Foundation retails for $14.99, and its Miracle Flawless Pressed Powder goes for $9.99. Similar products from Charlotte Tilbury retail for $49 and $28, respectively. It also offers non-dupes, like its best-selling XtendLash tubing mascara, which sells for $13.99. MCoBeauty was launched in Australia in 2016 by founder Shelley Sullivan, a former modeling agency owner. It is currently the top-selling color cosmetics brand in Australia and New Zealand, according to Greg Barker, MCoBeauty's evp of North America. As previously reported by Glossy in December, MCoBeauty launched its U.S. expansion at the end of 2024 with entry into 1,700 Kroger stores, which include regional grocery stores like Smiths, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Frys, Ralphs and more. The expansion also includes DTC sales via MCoBeauty's site and Amazon. This week, MCo Beauty also launched into 1,300 Target doors and on Target.com. Rojas joined The Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss MCoBeauty's U.S. expansion and the marketing strategy supporting it. She shared anecdotes about the company's OOH and digital marketing successes, including advice on building a digital community, connecting with influencers early in their careers, getting the best community UGC and hiring digitally-minded celebrities to lead social-first campaigns.

The Rent is Too Damn High: More than 63% of Los Angeles residents rent their homes. Unfortunately, this year, many of them are facing significant rent increases. This scenario is playing out for millions of tenants across the city and county of Los Angeles. Letters are being sent to renters, notifying them of upcoming rent hikes. In Los Angeles, rent-controlled properties have a maximum rent increase cap of 4%. Landlords can add an additional 2% if they cover gas and electricity for tenants. For non-rent-controlled properties, rent hikes can soar as high as 8.9%. Ralph's Sues: A Ralphs grocery store in Pacific Palisades is suing seven of the food vendors who have set up on the streets and sidewalks outside their store. The grocery market is suing the street vendors, alleging trespass, public nuisance, and negligence, saying the trucks and their clients illegally park and “obstruct the view of traffic" for Ralphs customers and employees, “obstruct pedestrian walkways,” draw crowds “that physically attack each other,” and “litter in Ralphs lot." Send us a textThis week we dig into the 1973 self-titled debut by Bad Company. Coming off of the success of Free, Paul Rodgers hooked up with Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and along with former Free drummer Simon Kirk, and King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell, formed what may be the most American-sounding British band ever: Bad Company. Rodgers soulful and powerful voice and Ralphs crunchy guitars punctuate songs about the old west, ballads about sea birds, and tunes about physical love that don't take much work to interpret. Bad Company was a monster hit, topping the charts in US and reaching # 3 in the UK. It is not an album full deep thought and self reflection, but that doesn't matter because it is and album of catchy licks and high octane fun that helped define the radio-freindy heavy rock of the 1970's.Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

On May 24, 1974, the world were introduced to new "supergroup" on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song record label with the self-titled debut of Bad Company. Sporting a world-class lineup of Paul Rodgers (Free) on vocals, Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) on guitar, Boz Burrell (King Crimson) on bass and Simon Kirke (Free) on drums, Bad Company were seasoned veterans of the studio and the road. After becoming disenchanted with their previous bands, the guys got together to form a straight ahead hard rock act that was built for American rock radio and to play live. And while the record went gold in their home of the UK, Bad Company (1974) is 5x platinum in the US. Paul Rodgers provides can go from singing with raw power on Rock Steady to the sweet Seagull to the soulful lament in Ready For Your Love. Ralphs big guitar riffs would help define what 70s hard rock was and the rhythm section of Burrell and Kirke were steady and creative. Though only two songs were released as official singles (Can't Get Enough & Movin' On), US rock radio fans have become familiar with the entire album thanks to DJs digging into this record for half a century. Ten years ago, few believed that an upstart brand could revolutionize the sleepy category of cottage cheese, and, by extension, dairy-based foods as a whole. Good Culture co-founder Jesse Merrill was part of that small cohort, and his steadfast belief that consumers want better-for-you and better tasting options in the dairy case defines his company, one some have described as “the next Chobani.” Launched in 2015, Good Culture markets a variety of cultured dairy products, including its flagship line of certified organic, pasture-raised, stabilizer and additive-free cottage cheese, along with sour cream, cream cheese and milk. A certified B Corporation and partner of 1% for the Planet, Good Culture products are sold nationally at Whole Foods, Target, Ralphs, Walmart, Sprouts and Kroger. In 2022, the company completed a $64 Million Series C funding round led by mission-driven private equity firm Manna Tree which also included investment from actress Kristen Bell. At the time, Good Culture was generating $70 million in annual retail sales and targeting $100 million in sales for the fiscal year. In this episode, Jesse spoke about how Good Culture aligns mission and values with business fundamentals, why proof of concept and velocity are keys to its growth strategy, being maniacal about delivering on the products' key attributes and how the best advice he ever received has benefited the company. Show notes: 0:43: Interview: Jesse Merrill, Co-Founder & CEO, Good Culture – Jesse spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif amid Manna Tree's Leadership Summit in Vail, Colorado and discussed his transition from the beverage industry into food, how he addressed early naysayers of Good Culture, holding ground on mission and values with retail partners and investors and why timing is critical when saying “yes” or “no.” He also explained why non-promotional “velocity is the number brand health metric,” why the company waited until it had established enough equity with its core business before innovating in other categories, how he views realistic versus ambitious goals and how both the worst and best advice he ever received impacted Good Culture's development. I've had the privilege of coaching thousands of people just like you, and I've seen them not just survive but thrive in their gluten-free living. It's not about it being magically easy, but it is about being intentional, doable, and healing for your body and soul. Imagine the strength it takes to resist the allure of a decadent chocolate cake at a party – that's the kind of willpower you're cultivating. Today, I want to share three actionable steps you can take, starting today, that will make a world of difference. Be sure to listen to the entire episode, because I go into detail as to how to do these 3 things most efficiently! 1. Create Your Gluten-Free Menu: Make a list of three breakfast options, three lunch ideas, three dinner recipes, three snack choices, and three desserts. Having these go-to options will make meal planning and grocery shopping much simpler. 2. Organize Your Kitchen: Create a designated a shelf or space in your fridge, freezer, and pantry for gluten-free items. Having a safe shelf ensures your food won't cross-contaminate, giving you peace of mind. 3. Find Your Gluten-Free Resources: Discover stores near you that offer a variety of gluten-free products. While it's tempting to buy everything labeled "gluten-free," it's not necessary. Some packaged foods might not be suitable for your taste or budget. Look for gluten-free options at places like Walmart (Walmart Pick Up Discount on first order) Costco Thrive Market (You get 40% off your first order, All orders get free shipping over $49) and local stores like Smiths, Kroger, or Ralphs. Remember, I've got your back. I have a comprehensive gluten-free guide available on my website. It's packed with valuable information to make your journey smoother. And if you want to spread the knowledge, I've created free "I am gluten-free" and "I have celiac disease" printables you can share with others. Fo more resources visit my website HERE! We've mentioned this time and time again that there are layers and layers of history when it comes to certain parts of California but what if those layers had a Walmart or a supermarket built in its place? Let's sit down and talk about a Walmart that was a department store where a horrific accident took place and a Ralphs supermarket that was built over a former sanatorium. There are so many haunted places and isles to cover so let's get grab some groceries and let's get Hollyweird.
Catching blue marlin off the coast of South Florida is a lost sport. Years ago the marlin fishery here in south Florida was nothing less than spectacular. Today it is a resource that is untapped as the sport fishermen have lowered the bar to a level where most do not even think of catching one of these magnificent creatures. Our friend TJ Ralph did just the opposite and got rewarded justly catching his first blue marlin with the ones he loves. Captain Norm could hardly keep his poise as his heart grew with pride and hope for the modern day fisherman . I hope you enjoy this episode of the Reel Guy Podcast Learn more about your ad choices.
