#STRongerTogether Meet the Scholar Podcast offers the opportunity for our community to get to know a prominent Strategic Management scholar through a candid conversation. Sessions will begin with an interview by moderators asking scholars a wide range of questions, including: where did they grow up, what made them pursue a career in academia, how have their research interests evolved, what were some challenges and triumphs along the way, what advice would they give to new scholars, what unanswered questions do they think we should pursue, who is their favorite author, and more! Each interview will be followed by discussion and Q&A between session participants and our guest scholar. Our goal is to build our community, share wisdom, be inspired, have some good laughs, and get to know our colleagues a little better.
The STR Division takes great pride in congratulating Professor David Collis for his distinguished contribution! The Outstanding Educator Award (created in 1987) recognizes a scholar who has demonstrated a long term commitment to and expertise in educating Strategy students. The award alternates each year between Ph.D./doctoral education and MBA/executive education. In even years like this one, STR evaluates nominees with respect to their contributions to MBA/executive education in strategic management, including evidence of outstanding teaching capabilities, an important impact on teaching pedagogy, and/or a deep passion about the subject. The STR Division takes great pride in congratulating Professor David Teece for his distinguished contribution! Criteria for Award: The STR Distinguished Scholarship Award shall be awarded biannually for a discovery of major importance in strategic management. The award recognizes an individual or individuals that have either made a specific theoretical or empirical discovery or have developed a core set of ideas that fundamentally advanced research and understanding in the field of strategic management. Thus, priority is given to the discovery's importance to the field, with secondary priority weighted toward more recent discoveries, rather than the accumulation of disparate body of work. Individuals who are or have been active participants of the division are eligible. In choosing among the nominees, the Awards Committee will assess how the development of the field would have differed if it did not have the benefit of the contribution (i.e., was it a next logical step in the scientific progress or did the individual(s) do something that was really unexpected Process of Nomination and Selection: Nominations for the STR Distinguished Scholarship Award will be sought from the STR Division membership, as well as from the STR Award Committee, prior winners of the Award, STR Executive Committee and Officers, and prior STR Chairs. The STR community should nominate individuals who meet the criteria for the award and highlight what is the discovery of major importance in strategic management. No self-nominations are accepted. This virtual research symposium will facilitate discussions and provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for scholars interested in publishing their research using non-US data in top-tier management journals. While some scholars encounter challenges in theorizing and justifying the use of non-US data, others emphasize that robust theories should apply to any context, be it the US or non-US. The primary focus of the discussion is to address these issues and explore ways in which scholars may overcome the "outsidership" and develop an optimal distinct approach for publishing with non-US data. You will hear from leading scholars Pursey Heugens (Erasmus University), Elena Kulchina (North Carolina State University), and Kevin Zhou (University of Hong Kong), all renowned for their substantial experience in publishing with non-US data. In the past few years, the research on ecosystems and related concepts has burgeoned. In this virtual symposium we gather a panel of renowned scholars to discuss how the ecosystem framework can help us address some of the core strategy issues: How do ecosystems differ from other forms of organization, such as value chains, markets, alliances? How are the intertwined value creation and value capture processes affecting the way firms achieve competitive advantage in ecosystems? How does the ecosystem lens affect the way we think about firms' boundaries? The goal of the symposium is to highlight what is different about the topics of competitive advantage and theory of the firm in ecosystems, and how studying these topics in ecosystems might benefit the broader strategy field. Panelists: Olivier Chatain (HEC), Rahul Kapoor (Wharton ), PK Toh (University of Texas at Austin), Brian Wu (Michigan Ross) Discussant: Marvin Lieberman (UCLA Anderson) Organizers: Cameron Miller (Syracuse University) and Elena Plaksenkova (Ohio State University). This Oxford/Cambridge style debate on whether we need a new theory of the 'international' firm", given all the major changes we are going through in the world. What would a new theory of the international firm look like? What are the boundary conditions and shift parameters that such a new theory would entail? For theory testing, what would general models look like for such a new theory? Do we need a new approach that integrates strategic management and theories of the international firm, so we can better explain the changing nature of contexts, organizational forms, incentives, motivations, frictions, and stakeholders? This panel debates whether a new approach that integrates strategic management and theories of the international firm help explain the changing nature of contexts, organizational forms, incentives, motivations, frictions, and stakeholders. The original charge is: "There is no need for a new theory of the 'international' firm." "For" side: Peter Buckley and Alain Verbeke, debating the current theories are adequate, "Against" side: David Teece and Jay Barney, debating that there is a need for a new approach. #STRongerTogether Virtual Symposium When do market versus non-market strategies help firms? Please join us in an exciting Ox-Bridge style debate on whether non-market (versus market) strategies are critical for firms' competitive advantages. The initial charge is set as: "Non-market strategies are critical to overall competitive strategy." Moderated by Ilgaz Arikan (Kent State University) the two teams will be discussing and at times debating "for" and "against" the initial charge. The For team, Helena Barnard (University of Pretoria) and Jonathan Doh (Villanova University) will argue that non-market strategies are necessary and sufficient conditions for competitive advantage. The Against team, Elizabeth Maitland (University of Liverpool) and Christos Pitelis (The University of Leeds) will argue that any firm can outperform their rivals in any location if they strictly apply market mechanisms. There is much to debate. Some of the interesting tensions around this broad charge are listed as a non-exhaustive list below, to spark audience participation following the debate. For instance: Do the firms' nationality drive firms to take market versus non-market action to dampen the negative sentiments in some countries? Does the degree of a firm's nationalistic inclination impact the use of market versus non-market strategies? Do all markets require some sort of non-market adjustments? Wouldn't value creation and capture motives override the negative national sentiments and steer firms to adhere to strict market-based strategies? Do non-market strategies work the same way in factor and product markets? When would market versus non-market strategies influence firms' competitive actions? Would history impact non-market versus market strategies differently, and at times in conflicting ways? How do these strategies impact firm performance, given historical tensions?
