Imagine having a virtual clone of yourself to assist your students whenever they need help and would track where students are struggling. In this episode, Joshua Gans joins us to discuss an attempt at creating an AI platform that accomplishes this. Joshua is a Professor of Strategic Management and Jeffrey S. Skill Chair of Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management with a joint appointment in the Department of Economics. His work focuses on the economics of innovation, entrepreneurship, and artificial intelligence. He has authored numerous scholarly articles on the economic impact of generative AI and, with Ajay Agrawal and Avi Goldfarb, of Prediction Machines and Power and Prediction, two books that have helped shape public understanding of the economic implications of AI. Joshua has been thinking deeply about what generative AI means for higher education: how it can support teaching and learning, how colleges should prepare students for AI-augmented careers, and how AI may reshape labor market opportunities for today's students. At the University of Toronto, he and Kevin Bryan developed an AI teaching assistant, All Day TA, which has been used to provide students with support outside traditional class hours. Yan "Anthea" Zhang, the Fayez Sarofim Vanguard Chair of Strategic Management at Rice Business, has spent more than two decades researching the decisions that make or break organizations: CEO succession, corporate governance, and the gender dynamics shaping who rises to the top.On this special live episode, Zhang joins host Maya Pomroy '22 to share what her research reveals about the leap from functional roles to the C-suite, and why taking risks is non-negotiable for career advancement (especially for women). She also opens up about her origin story — from being part of the first-ever cohort at Nanjing University's business school to building a life and career in Houston — and why, after 25 years, Rice still feels like home.Plus: her latest research on AI-powered customer service, advice from her "Last Lecture" and how Rice Business Executive Education's Executive Leadership for Women program is giving women the tools and community to rise.Episode Guide:00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro03:19 Professor Zhang's Origin Story05:09 Hong Kong and USC07:46 Why Rice Feels Different12:32 CEO Succession Insights17:45 Executive Leadership for Women Program19:04 Challenges Women Still Face24:54 Teaching Global Strategy30:06 Managing Uncertainty & Frameworks For Risk36:25 How AI is Transforming Online Sales38:47 Advice to Students The Owl Have You Know Podcast is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:On creating a safe space for women to grow in the workplace19:58: For people who want to move up the career ladder, we need mentors. But a lot of times, people in more senior positions are still men, right? So, that's why both male and female mentors are all important. Because there are still so few women in senior leadership positions, right? That's why if you only rely on more senior female leaders to champion for you, to mentor you, that's not sufficient. You really need mentoring from both male and female leaders. So, I think that is why one benefit of our program is that we really target women who already have some leadership experiences. We create a safe space for them to share their concerns, challenges, and also allow them to share best practices with each other in a safe space. So, we really needed that. Why asking is important for women17:15: [Anthea Zhang] Dare to ask, dare to take risks, dare to get into areas, functions you are not comfortable with, you are not familiar with, which are those factors that are really key. And you have to show your track record instead of saying, "I want to," having a plan or having ambition is not sufficient. You have to show the track record.Higher leadership role means greater responsibility14:35: For people who already made it to top management team positions but still focus on more function-based roles, if you want to make it to the overall leadership role like a CEO, you have to take profit and loss responsibility. You have to expand the responsibility of your position. You know, of course, we see some people transition from CFO to CEO, but what is required for a CEO position is way more, it is way broader than, like, the CFO or chief marketing officer. Singapore is introducing a three-month, 13% fare revenue support scheme to stabilise school bus and care transport operators amid rising fuel costs driven by geopolitical tensions. While the move is expected to keep fares stable in the near term, questions remain over whether such short-term subsidies address underlying cost pressures or merely delay inevitable adjustments. On The Big Story, Debbie Yong speaks to Terence Fan, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship at the Singapore Management University, to examine whether this policy offers meaningful relief or simply defers deeper structural challenges within the sector.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Can a tethered drone flying 400 feet in the air really replace traditional wind turbines?Rob Creighton, Founder and CEO of Windlift, brings an unconventional background to clean energy innovation. After mapping the human genome as a lab technician, his concerns about peak oil led him to Miles Lloyd's revolutionary 1980 paper on airborne wind energy. "Cut off the tip of a wind turbine blade, attach it to a tether and generate the same electricity with 95% less material," Rob explains. Windlift's tethered drones fly at 400 feet, generating power without towers or massive infrastructure. Can this technology scale beyond defense applications? Rob shares why he's willing to risk everything for climate solutions that protect the Minnesota wilderness where his nephew can no longer play pond hockey.Rob Creighton is the Founder and CEO of Windlift, which he established in 2006 after discovering Miles Lloyd's pioneering research on airborne wind energy. With a BS in Genetics and an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rob worked as a biologist on the Human Genome Project before pivoting to clean energy innovation. Based in Durham, North Carolina, he has secured over $30 million in contracts with the Naval Research Laboratory and Pentagon, developing tethered autonomous drones that generate electricity with 95% less material than traditional turbines, serving both military and commercial applications. In This Episode: (00:00) Rob Creighton - from mapping human genome to airborne wind(02:45) Windlift's technology explained, tethered drones generating power at altitude(05:28) Peak oil concerns and discovery of Miles Lloyd's groundbreaking paper(10:07) Challenges of airborne wind energy, learning from Makani's failure(15:06) Defense market strategy and working with Pentagon operational energy(19:39) Personal commitment to climate action and wilderness preservationShare with someone who would enjoy this topic, like and subscribe to hear all of our future episodes, send us your comments and guest suggestions!About the show: The Age of Adoption podcast explores the monumental transition from a period of social, economic, and environmental research and exploration – an Age of Innovation – to today's world in which companies across the economy are furiously deploying sustainable solutions – the Age of Adoption. I've always thought of myself as a practitioner. In the startups I was part of, the only “strategy” were my marketing tactics on how to make the VP of Sales the richest person in the company. After I retired, I created Customer Development and co-created the Lean Startup as a simple methodology which codified founders best practices – in a language and process that was easy to understand and implement. All from a practitioner's point of view.

Adam Wowak is a Professor of Management & Organization in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame where he teaches strategic management to MBA and Ph.D. students. Adam's research focuses on strategic leadership and corporate governance. His work has appeared in top-tier academic journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science. His research has also been profiled in media outlets such as The Atlantic, Financial Times, Forbes, NBC News, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, among others. Adam received both his bachelor's degree and Ph.D. from Penn State University. In this episode we discuss the following: When Adam graduated college, he had a prestigious job as an investment banker. It paid well. It was intellectually challenging. He liked the people he was working with. But he wasn't excited to work every day. He didn't have autonomy. And he didn't have creative outlets. So he thought about the tradeoffs he was making by staying. He then considered the tradeoffs he would make by leaving. By thinking about tradeoffs, Adam gained clarity on what mattered most to him. He ultimately chose to leave banking and found his way to academia, which has its own set of tradeoffs, but ones that Adam is happier with. As Adam tells his students, there are three types of careers people can have. One they love. One they hate. And one they're okay with, in the murky middle. And it's this third kind of career that people need to watch out for so that they don't drift, and wake up 20 years later realizing they should have thought more carefully about the tradeoffs they were making. Remember to think about the tradeoffs we're making, both when we stick with the status quo and when we decide to change. It's been a minute since we had an in person episode. And today's episode has an interesting back story, that I'm really excited to dive into. On New Years Eve I was scrolling social media and saw this individual posting about his daily life in college. I like following trends and seeing what's working, and it was clear that this was. Then I realized he had 25,000 followers on IG. Then I realized he was a student at Wash U here in St. Louis. So I reached out to him, letting him know that I was enjoying his content and would love to interview him on the podcast. To be honest, I expected crickets. Or a massively delayed response. The next morning he reached out to me (while traveling) and said he would love to. A few weeks ago we had coffee and met up to chat further, and now we are here for the episode. My guest today is Anthony Gross. Anthony's Bio:Anthony Gross is a college student, social media influencer, content creator, and host of the ‘Gross Potential' podcast. He is a senior at Washington University in St. Louis where he studies Marketing and Organization and Strategic Management. Anthony has built a following on social of over 50K+ sharing his college lifestyle, tips on self-improvement, fitness, and a dash of entertainment. Anthony also runs a podcast where he dives deep into one of his strongest passions, personal development, while interviewing some of the most successful Gen Z personalities across the country.Social Media Handlesanthonygross_ (Instagram)_anthonygross_ (TikTok)anthony-gross (YouTube)Gross Potential (Spotify)Builders of Authority:FREE Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/7685392924809322 BOA Mastermind: https://buildauthority.co/order-form-mastermind GoHighLevel Extended 30-day Free Trial w/TONS of Personal Branding Bonuses: http://gohighlevel.com/adammcchesney

Exploring fire risk mitigation in the face of lithium-ion challenges.Battery and energy storage-related fires are still relatively rare, but when they do occur, they are challenging to manage due to the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries. So how is the industry working to mitigate these risks? To find out, David is joined by Kelly Sarber, CEO of Strategic Management and Vice Chair of NY-BEST, a battery industry trade group in New York. Kelly advocates for educating communities with planned energy storage projects, especially around risk management. A recent survey revealed that 42% of these communities expressed safety concerns, primarily due to fears of fires. The conversation emphasises the importance of involving local communities and first responders early in the planning process to build trust and transparency.Lithium-ion battery fires can be particularly difficult to suppress due to the risk of thermal runaway, which can cause the fire to reignite even after being extinguished. Anthony Natale, Director of Risk at the Fire & Risk Alliance, works on identifying and managing risks in utility and battery storage. Anthony and Kelly discuss the complexities of controlling these fires and stress the need for better containment and isolation strategies during incidents. They also explore necessary design changes in battery energy storage systems (BESS), such as direct injection of suppression agents, to improve fire response.
